If you have never used Turnitin before, as an instructor you will need to request access to turnitin.com (ONLY IF YOU ARE NOT USING THE MOODLE INTEGRATION). We will set up a user for you and send you information on how to access and proceed. To request access please email:

Turnitin/Moodle Integration
There is also a module that works with turnitin.com that is built directly into Moodle. So if you are having your class submit an assignment and wish for them to submit to turnitin and get a plagiarism report as well, this is a great option. You can add the module the same way you add a regular moodle assignment, but instead of choosing Assignment in the menu, you will have to choose External Tool. Once this is added, you can configure which external tool you are using by specifying Turnitin from a drop-down menu in the settings of this module.

What file types can you submit via Turnitin?
You can set Turnitin to accept any file type in Settings > Optional Settings.
However, please be aware that the different file types have limitations with Turnitin functionality.
Limitations of Turnitin
Turnitin is billed as a plagiarism tool. This means it is a tool that can aid in detecting plagiarism by detecting text matches in documents accessed in the student repository, as well as other sources. When a text match is found, it is highlighted in the document and provides data to the file they believe the information is from. Keep in mind, it is up to you as the instructor to evaluate these matches and determine if they have quoted and referenced the material properly or if the match is actually a misuse of the text.
What is an acceptable similarity report percentage?
Again, this is up to you as an instructor. No rule states that plagiarism is acceptable if the similarity report scores are below a certain percentage.
You, as the instructor, must evaluate each case. Turnitin makes the process easier by identifying text matches for you.
Can Turnitin detect all aspects of a document?
No, Turnitin cannot detect, display or process hidden content, linked documents or documents that contain multiple files, such as PDF portfolios.
