Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education

Majors: Music/Music Education

This is what a music career sounds like.

Become a music specialist in the classroom by combining your love of music and teaching with the highly specialized BMus focusing on performance, history, theory and conducting.

This combined program takes five years to complete and you graduate with two degrees. Your BMus (Music) degree covers the subject you want to teach and the Education degree (BEd) consists of three professional semesters providing practical experience through supervised placements in schools. This stream provides the strongest background in music, which allows you to build expertise in the music field and enables you to take the reins of secondary-level music education.

A studio audition is required for admission into this program. See below for details about the process and to submit your audition application.

What you need to know as a current student in this program

The Faculties of Fine Arts and Education jointly offer a 50-course (150.0 credit hour) Combined Degrees program leading to the degrees Bachelor of Music (BMus) and Bachelor of Education (BEd). Upon successful completion of the Combined Degrees program, you receive the BMus degree from the Faculty of Fine Arts and the BEd degree from the Faculty of Education.

The Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education stream offers a more specialized background in music that allows you to build expertise in the field, and enables you to take the reins of secondary-level music education.

For the BMus (Music) program there are some must-take courses that provide a great foundation for your majors, but you'll also have flexibility on choosing a number of courses for the path of specialization and creative study you wish to take. Refer to your Program Planning Guide in your calendar year for the courses you'll need to take and choose from within the Music lists, Music Studio lists, Music Ensemble Activity lists and as Music Electives.

Faculty of Fine Arts Requirements for the 50-Course BMus/BEd:
  • at least 32 courses (96.0 credit hours) with cumulative and graduation grade point averages of at least 2.00;
  • a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 on all Music and/or Music Studio courses;
  • at least 12 Music and/or Music Studio courses (36.0 credit hours) at the 3000/4000 level;
  • Completion of the Liberal Education List Requirement.
