Clavis Publishing - Key Colors Illustrator Competition
Clavis Publishing launches Key Colors, the two-yearly national contest for illustrators of children鈥檚 books. Only a children鈥檚 book, intended for children from 2 to 7 years old, can qualify for the award. A professional jury will judge the artistic, literary, and child-oriented qualities of the works.
DEADLINE鉂桱uly 1st, 2026
The winner receives $ 8000 and the winning work will be published by Clavis Publishing.
Apart from the winner, other entries may also be considered for publication by Clavis. The award and the resulting picture books will be largely discussed in the press and at book fairs abroad. For many illustrators, this unique award is the start of a successful international career.
More information, as well as the submission form, can be found on our website .
We would love to invite new illustration talent to participate in the competition.
Good to know:
- Participation in the competition is entirely voluntary.
- Participation is not limited to students; anyone of any experience level and background may submit their work.
- The competition is open to anyone residing in the US or Canada.
- Only original content that has not been published before is eligible for competition.
- Any submitted work will remain the property of the artist 鈥 we will not have any rights to it as a publisher and will not use it without the artist鈥檚 consent.
- Group submissions (collaborations between authors and illustrators) are allowed.
- Artists may submit an unlimited number of works.
- Artists are free to use any technique(s) they want, whether analog or digital.
- It is not necessary to submit a full picture book; three completed pages or spreads are enough for the jury, in addition to sketches of the other pages. A cover design is not necessary. However, artists are free to submit completed works if they wish to do so.
- Any usage of generative artificial intelligence in any part of the creative process will disqualify the submission from competition 鈥 we are looking for real work, by real artists, for real young readers.
This is a unique opportunity for art professionals and students to get their work published as a children鈥檚 book.
