Summer Instructor FAQs

Destination Exploration isn’t your typical summer camp job. While you’ll still go outside to play games, swim in the pool and work with kids, as an instructor you will gain experience in public speaking, classroom management, educational lesson planning, and valuable teamwork and communication soft skills that will help you after the summer is over. DE camps work with a variety of technology used in K-12 education that you will be taught how to use effectively such as Spheros, Ozobots, Makey Makey, Micro:bit, TinkerCAD and 3D printing. Who doesn’t want to make explosions and work with robots all summer.

Yes! For those instructors that have school obligations, we allow them to work part-time until May 1st. School comes first. We’ll set a training schedule that works for everyone.

No. Our instructors always have a variety of degree paths. We do ask that you have experience in a type of science (bio, chem, physics, kinesiology), engineering, computer science or are working towards an education degree.

TLC stands for Traveling Lab Coats. Our TLC workshops are a collection of pre-made 1-hour workshops that align with the Alberta Curriculum for Grades K – 8 and are designed to engage students in STEM through hands-on projects. Teachers and other community groups book these workshops in advance and DE Instructors travel to schools with all the necessary materials to teach the lesson.

While having access to a vehicle is not a requirement, it may be a deciding factor during the hiring process. Our instructors travel in teams therefore there is a minimum number of successful applicants that must hold an unrestricted Class 5 license and have access to a vehicle.

InSTEM stands for Indigenous STEM. As an InSTEM instructor, you will act as a mentor for Indigenous youth while you lead and participate in programs designed to connect Traditional Knowledge with Western Science. This includes two weeks of Land Camp during May, an InSTEM camp week on-campus and programming in-community at libraries or community centers. InSTEM instructors are a team within the larger DE instructor team.

You will first be taught the collection of TLC workshops and other skills during April. Through May and June, you and another instructor may be travelling to schools across southern Alberta delivering these workshops or in the office working to develop your own summer camp activities and schedule.

No. During camp you will always be working with another instructor and may have a high school intern and/or volunteer.

Most of our camps have 24 spots available except for our Codemakers and Code+ camps which are limited to 15.

DE is all about having fun with STEM. That includes you too. There are a variety of camp week themes set, but we give our instructors the opportunity to plan and develop activities that they find interesting. Don’t worry, we have lots of examples and past activity guides to help you get started. For a full list of camp themes, visit
