Department of History & Religion
Welcome to the Department of History and Religion
We acknowledge that we live and work in the traditional territory of the Siksikaitsitapii (Blackfoot people).
We also acknowledge the role the discipline of History has played in the dispossession and genocide of Indigenous peoples, here and around the world.
The Department of History and Religion brings together scholars interested in exploring the human condition across time and cultures.
History is the study of what people did and thought in the past, and how that has -- and has not -- changed over time. The History department offers courses focusing on many different time periods and geographic regions, from the ancient world to the twentieth century, from North America to Asia. We also offer a number of thematically-focused courses including Witchcraft, Slavery & Abolition, War & Peace, and the History of Childhood.
Religion has played significant role in human history and remains vitally important to peoples and cultures the world over. The scholarly study of religion is therefore an indispensable component of liberal education. We offer introductory courses on a wide array of religious traditions and upper-level seminars on such fascinating topics as Religion and Science Fiction Film; Islamic Art, Architecture and Music; Women in Early Christianity; and Hindu Goddesses.
Together, the Department of History and Religion offers students the scholarly apparatus to delve into the beliefs, institutions, and broader social, political, and cultural forces shaping the human experience.
