Discussions Across Disciplines: Coding

Dr. Jan Newberry (Assoc. Prof. Anthropology), Dr. Caroline Hodes (Asst. Prof. WGST) and PhD Candidate Jonathan Jarrett (Evolution & Behaviour)

What do we do when we code? And what does coding mean across disciplines? What are the challenges and affordances of coding as an analytical process? Join us for an informal discussion with an anthropologist, a feminist legal scholar, and an evolutionary behaviourist to consider these questions. Discussions Across Disciplines brings together an interdisciplinary group of students, faculty, and academic staff to discuss current topics that span various academic fields.

Have you ever wondered: What are the benefits and dangers of rough-and-tumble play? What motivates rough-and-tumble play? What is the connection between rough-and-tumble play and aggression? What does rough-and-tumble play have to do with gender expectations? What types of children are drawn to rough-and-tumble play? This session will unpack these questions and look at how to create home and school environments that promote safety and development. More info:

Exhibition: 鈥淓lders of the Future鈥 closes Oct 21

This exhibition has been created and curated by a multi-generational and multi-cultural team, including Blackfoot community members, who have participated in a community-driven research project between and the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge鈥檚 Institute for Child & Youth Studies (I-CYS). The exhibition provides a space to learn about local Blackfoot culture, history, and language through art and photography. 鈥淓lders of the Future鈥 celebrates the incredible resiliency of local Blackfoot communities through their family and child-rearing practices. The exhibit is the culmination of a 10-year research project called 鈥淩aising Spirit鈥 led by Tanya Pace Crosschild (Opokaa'sin) and Dr. Jan Newberry (Anthropology, ULeth) in conjunction with I-CYS (directed by Dr. Kristine Alexander). Take Two Speaker Series (ORIS)

Drs. Jan Newberry and Jeffrey MacCormack

The second session on Oct. 25 will focus on understanding childhood and difference. Dr. Jeffrey MacCormack (Education) conducts research on attentional issues in the classroom in children who experience difficulty socializing and regulating emotions. He鈥檚 interested in how play-based interventions can help regulate and modulate children鈥檚 behaviour in the classroom. The other speaker, Dr. Jan Newberry (Anthropology) will discuss the partnership between the U of L鈥檚 Institute for Child and Youth Studies and the Opokaa鈥檚in Early Intervention Society. Through the Raising Spirit project, they鈥檝e been collecting stories and images for a digital storytelling library to highlight Indigenous ways of knowing and to build community capacity collaboratively. The Centre for Oral History and Tradition and the Institute for Child and Youth Studies present a joint book launch for Dr. Heidi MacDonald and Dr. Kristine Alexander to celebrate the publication of their new books. Join us at 6pm to meet the authors, and stay for their talks and readings at 7pm. Books will be available for purchase at the event thanks to the U of L Bookstore! Snacks and refreshments will be provided. Everyone is welcome.
