It has been claimed that Charles Dickens invented the way we think about Christmas by publishing 鈥淎 Christmas Carol鈥 in 1843 to enormous popular acclaim, making it an instant classic. This paper will lay out the forgotten history of 鈥淎 Christmas Carol,鈥 which was not intended as a feel-good fairy-tale, but as an enraged tirade against the evils of capitalism. 鈥淎 Christmas Carol鈥 provides a perfect example of how great writing can influence culture and how vital literature can be to the well-being of society.
