Indigenous Youth Mentorship Program (Dhillon School of Business)

Overview for Mentors:

Our Mission

To provide positive encouragement to Indigenous youth in all educational endeavours, in a culturally sensitive, safe and caring environment with Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge student mentors.

How the Program Works

Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge students (Mentors) will attend group mentorship activities with local Indigenous middle school and high school students (Mentees). Group sizes may vary. All mentors are screened and need to provide references as well as screening measures include a Police Information Check (PIC) and a Government of Alberta Intervention Record Check. Once applications are completed, mentors will receive an orientation from Risk and Safety Services, and training and support from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Counselling Services. This is a paid opportunity: each mentor will receive a payment amount specified by the university, and all activities will be paid for.

Program Objectives

  • To provide Indigenous youth with fun, positive ways to connect with U of L students.

  • To foster confidence and provide positive Indigenous role models.

  • To provide support and motivation to youth in their daily lives.

  • To encourage educational success.

    Mentor Role and Responsibilities

  • Will comply with Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge policies and procedures

  • Relationship building:
    o Mentors will Engage in a positive relationship with mentees by:
    Maintaining a positive attitude, remaining non-judgemental and respectful of mentees individuality, encourages mentees’ aspirations and successes,

  • Reliability:
    o Will show up to scheduled meetings and activities on time throughout the academic year

  • Communication:
    o Able to communicate on a level that mentees can relate to

    Mentors Requirements

  • Must be a current Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge student

  • Completed application form including references and a PIC(Police Information Check) with vulnerable sector check, and Child Intervention Record Check

  • Available 4-6 hours per month to spend time with mentees

  • Able to commit for the entire academic school year (8 months)
