AMETHYST: Remote Sensing, Right at Home
AMETHYST
by Leah Strand | 2010
Gordon Logie and Jolene Garber might be in different programs, but their many interests collide in . These ambitious science students are both involved in the program at the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge.
AMETHYST stands for Advance Methods, Education and Training in Hyperspectral Science and Technology. Exclusive to the U of L, AMETHYST began in May 2010 and is offered through the 免费福利资源在线看片鈥檚 for undergraduate students.
AMETHYST teaches students about working in hyperspectral science, a type of remote-imaging that uses high spectral satellite and airborne imagery to derive data. 鈥淲e can get information based on how a material reflects light,鈥 Gordon says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really an emerging science.鈥
鈥淩emote-imaging has many applications,鈥 explains , AMETHYST program coordinator. 鈥淚n geography, we can use it to determine vegetation health, in physics, they study atmospheric gases, and the health-science portion deals mainly with MRIs.鈥
Students can become involved in AMETHYST at the undergraduate, graduate, or PhD level. Undergraduate students are guaranteed three work terms鈥攊n a university lab, a government placement, and an industrial setting. The AMETHYST team secures all the placements and brings in experts to speak at seminars for the students.
Gordon is a fourth-year student specializing in GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and Jolene is just finishing her third year majoring in . Both have completed two work terms with AMETHYST and are planning to do their third term this summer.
Their first work terms were spent at the U of L working with highly respected professors and cutting-edge lab equipment. 鈥淭he U of L has the only calibration lab in Canada,鈥 says Armstrong, 鈥渁nd we offer some of the best opportunities for remote-sensing work in the world.鈥
For their second terms, Gordon worked at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) in Ottawa, and Jolene was placed in Germany.
鈥淚 worked in a spectroscopy lab, converting the energies of light into computer matrixes,鈥 she explains. 鈥淕ermany is such an amazing place for scientific research鈥攊t was definitely the highlight of my university experience.鈥
AMETHYST aims to give students practical skills with tools and also provides them with management experience, in the hopes of making them more employable. 鈥淥ur goal is to develop well-rounded students, with practical experience before they enter the workforce,鈥 says Armstrong.
Jolene says AMETHYST is perfect for students like her who have a wide array of interests. 鈥淎fter all, I鈥檓 a bio major who works in a physics lab!鈥 she says, laughing. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 consider taking something that doesn鈥檛 directly relate to my degree to be a waste at all. 免费福利资源在线看片 is not just about getting a job鈥攊t鈥檚 about learning and gaining an appreciation for all fields.鈥
Jolene has one more year left in her undergraduate degree. No matter what she decides to do after graduation, she has AMETHYST to thank for her invaluable connections with professors and scientists, and hands-on experience working with instruments and computers.
鈥淭echnology is everywhere these days,鈥 she says, 鈥渁nd I know I鈥檒l be involved with it no matter which career direction I take.鈥
Gordon is making arrangements to continue on to his Master鈥檚 with AMETHYST next year. He plans to use this summer鈥檚 work term working on a food security project to spearhead his graduate research. 鈥淎METHYST has obviously had a huge impact on my path in life,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been such an interesting journey.鈥
