Dr. Brian Black (Music), Dr. Edward Jurkowski (Music) and Dr. Emily Luce (New Media) all received internal Social Sciences Humanities Research Council grants valued at $4,500 each.

U of L alumnus Christian Darbyshire (BMgt '99) was named one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40™. As a partner with tinePublic Inc., Darbyshire has been instrumental in securing names such as Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Lance Armstrong and Arnold Schwarzenegger for educational speaking engagements in Canada. It is the second consecutive year that the U of L has had someone recognized by the Globe and Mail's Top 40 Under 40™ program. Dr. Olga Kovalchuk was honoured last year.

Joshua Seerattan, a U of L student from the Faculty of Management, and Courtney Lockhart from the Faculty of Arts and Science, have been awarded a $5,500 USD grant from Alberta Advanced Education and Technology for their participation in The Washington Centre – Alberta Internship Program for summer 2011. Both students will spend six weeks in Washington, D.C. Seerattan will be participating in the Global Trade and Regional Integration program, while Lockhart will take part in the International Affairs program.

Dagmar Dahle's (Art) work is included in the exhibition ANIMAL, at Museum London in Ontario.

Laura Lavigne (BA '06), the co-ordinator, International Programs & Exchange, in the International Centre for Students was awarded a full scholarship ($3,000) to participate in the International Educators Training Program this summer at Queen's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

Denton Fredrickson (Art) has made the long list for the 2011 Sobey Art Award, Canada's pre-eminent prize for contemporary Canadian art. Following a three-month nomination process, the Curatorial Panel announced the 25 artists vying for this year's award.

Music major Matt Groenheide (percussionist) won the Young Artist Competition presented by the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra. In addition to a cash prize, he receives a guest solo spot with the LSO during their 2011-2012 Masters Series.

Marg McKeen (Office of Research and Innovation Services) is retiring this summer after 33 years of service to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. She began her career at the U of L as an Academic Secretary in the Department of Sociology and was hired by the Office of Research Services in 1986. Since that time, she has served in a number of roles and worked with numerous faculty members and students. A retirement reception will be held on Wednesday, June 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Markin Hall Atrium. Library event features music instructors

A talented group of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge music faculty instructors assembles Wednesday, June 2 in the Lethbridge Public Library Theatre as they present Les Nuits d'été/Summer Nights.

The 8 p.m. show features performances by Brian Black (piano), Joanne Collier (soprano), Tido Janssen (cello), Stacy Kwak (piano) and Sandra Stringer (mezzo-soprano).

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Department of Music, in collaboration with the Lethbridge Public Library, presents the event. Music is by Hector Berlioz, Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré and César Franck.

Tickets for the concert are priced at $15 for regular admission and $10 for seniors/students and are available at the door.

Brass quintet takes to stage

An evening of lighthearted entertainment with the U of L Brass Quintet is in store for audiences attending the American in Paris concert, Saturday, Apr. 17 at 8 p.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Recital Hall.

This is the final concert of the season for the Faculty Artists and Friends series.

"The music featured is either French composed-American inspired, or American composed-French inspired," says Nick Sullivan, trombonist and music faculty. "The Brass Quintet is playing a transcription of Gershwin's American in Paris, with other offerings including selections from Porgy and Bess and Debussy's Gollywog's Cakewalk."

The U of L Brass Quintet is a relatively new ensemble to the Department of Music.

"We started the ensemble two years ago," says Sullivan. "We all love brass music, and with the support and talent of players at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and in the community, it seemed a perfect opportunity to come together and play some great brass chamber music."

Comprised of members Nick Sullivan, Dr. Thomas Staples, Trudi Mason, Gerald Rogers and Keith Griffioen, the U of L Brass Quintet was featured with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra and with the Music at Noon concert series on campus.

In addition to the Brass Quintet, other friends are taking to the stage to continue the evening's French/American inspired program.

"Dr. Sandra Stringer and Elinor Lawson perform excerpts from the Aaron Copland's Emily Dickinson Songs and Peter Visentin is performing the Ravel Violin Sonata, the middle movement of which is inspired by Blues," says Dr. Brian Black, concert co-ordinator.

Artists and friends paying homage to Stravinsky

Music by one of the greatest composers of the 20th century closes the U of L Faculty Artists and Friends concert series. Homage to Stravinsky on April 4, 8 p.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Recital Hall, features an array of his masterpieces.

A highlight of the program is Igor Stravinsky's delightful The Soldier's Tale for instrumental ensemble and three speakers.

"This modern folk fable tells how a soldier returning home on leave is tricked by the devil out of his cherished violin, his sweetheart and five years of his life in return for a book that reveals future stock prices," explains Dr. Brian Black. "The soldier becomes immensely wealthy through the magic of the book but yearns for his previous happiness. Finally he decides to confront the devil, defeat him and win back all that he has lost."

Also featured in the concert are Stravinsky's Faun and Shepherdess, the early song cycle that first revealed the composer's genius, a sultry Tango for piano and the Three Pieces for Clarinet, inspired in part by Stravinsky's interest in jazz.

Several Music Department faculty are performing, including: Dr. Sandra Stringer, Margaret Mezei, Trudi Mason, Nick Sullivan, Peter Visentin, Adam Mason, Dr. Thomas Staples and Dr. Deanna Oye.

Joining faculty performers as special guests are some old friends, Dr. George Evelyn as the narrator, Peter Monaghan as the soldier, and some new friends, bassoonist Michael Macaulay and the double bassist George Amorim.
