Investigating global population and economies

The extent and implications of population change and the dynamics of economies raise questions that demographers and social scientists alike are working to better understand. Taken together in a global context, the number of questions only increases. Yet both population and economies affect our lives, our choices and our policies.

At the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, global population challenges are explored from different angles and potential solutions are investigated in new ways.

Like many people, John Prentice of Calmar, Alta., dreamed of making a difference in the world. But the late agri-business entrepreneur and philanthropist didn't just stop there; he wanted to change the course of history altogether.

It was an ambitious goal – and one that prompted Prentice, along with his wife Connie, to donate more than $8 million to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 2006. The endowment marked the largest-single gift in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's history and established the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy. The institute, which was officially launched in 2009, studies changes in the world population and their lasting impact on demographics, economies and societies.

Just a short time later, the Prentice Institute has become a leading research centre, one of only a few worldwide that is focused on global population changes and the economy. What's more, the institute has attracted many external research grants and is building graduate programs, along with bringing together 20 research affiliates from across eight departments at the U of L.

From looking at how people move through life stages in different economies with different demographic structures, to questions of food security, ethnic diversity, immigration and international trade, the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is at the cutting edge of demographic research.

"It's magical when you get that cross-pollination of expertise," says Dr. Trevor Harrison, a U of L sociology professor who served as the Prentice Institute's interim director between 2007 and 2009.

At the Prentice Institute, sociologists, historians, anthropologists and economists work alongside experts in such diverse fields as nursing, public health, political science and women's studies. Those researchers, in turn, create partnerships with experts across Canada and around the world. The result: global population challenges are explored from different angles and potential solutions are investigated in new ways.

"John Prentice was a big thinker," says
Dr. Susan McDaniel, the institute's current director. She also holds the Prentice Research Chair in Global Population and Economy, the first endowed position of its kind at the U of L. "John was a Renaissance man who understood how things were connected."

Indeed, many forces and factors affect – and are connected to – the global population and economy. But the links between the former and latter are not well understood. Prentice Institute researchers are advancing our understanding of this relationship and using data to verify or refute popular beliefs about demographic changes. This "myth-busting" practice can be applied to numerous situations, says McDaniel.

"We often hear, for instance, that providing health care to an aging population will bankrupt the system," she explains. "In reality, there are much wider concerns. Medical treatments are expensive, and there is a deepening problem of poverty and the health issues associated with it."

To that end, Prentice Institute researchers are studying various issues that appear, at first blush, to be unconnected. They include international trade, migration, aging and family size. But while the subjects may seem disparate, McDaniel says cause-and-effect relationships are at work – and they are having a major impact on the world's citizens.

"Growing inequalities, for example, are happening in developed countries, such as Canada and the United States, and in developing countries, too. These inequalities cause health problems and lower everyone's life expectancy," says McDaniel. The process, she explains, is similar to an illness spreading through a classroom. If one unvaccinated child becomes sick, others will inevitably be affected.

That concept of social ramifications is one in which McDaniel is well versed. An internationally recognized sociology researcher and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, her expertise includes demographic aging, generational relationships, family change and the social impacts of technology. Before joining the Prentice Institute and the U of L Department of Sociology two years ago, McDaniel was a professor of family and consumer studies at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Utah and a senior scholar at its Institute of Public and International Affairs.

Having lived in Alberta before, McDaniel's return north of the border has helped attract other researchers to the Prentice Institute. Among them is Dr. Kathrin Komp, a post-doctoral fellow from VU ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Amsterdam. Other researchers, such as Drs. Harrison and Alexander Darku, who were U of L faculty members before the Prentice Institute was created, currently serve as the institute's associate directors. Their collective experience and expertise have made a significant impact on the institute.

For example, Darku, an assistant professor of economics at the U of L, previously taught at McGill and Concordia Universities. He has also served as a consultant to the World Bank at its Washington, D.C., headquarters and has worked as an economist in Ghana. Through his association with the Prentice Institute, Darku has noticed a shift in his research interests.

Whereas he was previously focused strictly on economic policies and international development, he now studies the interplay among international trade, migration and health. Specifically, Darku is currently looking at the growth of multinational companies in developing countries and the resulting impact on populations' eating habits. The situation, Darku has found, contributes to a "nutritional shift" within a population and can increase obesity rates.

"The interdisciplinary nature of the Prentice Institute has brought many new dimensions to my research," says Darku.

Harrison, meanwhile, has shared his research with new audiences; he has spoken at a number of presentations hosted by the institute. Once a visiting professor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta and Hokkai-Gakuen ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in Japan, Harrison was the 2010 Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Canadian Studies at Georgia's Kennesaw State ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. As a researcher and guest lecturer at the university, he brought a Canadian perspective to the relationship between Canada and the United States since Sept. 11.

Today at the Prentice Institute, Harrison – like Darku – balances his research with administrative responsibilities. And it seems both areas involve big-picture thinking.

"We're developing programs that will keep the institute moving forward. Ultimately, we're creating a research infrastructure that supports creative thinking and incubates good ideas."

One example is a policy concept known as a guaranteed annual income (GAI). While there are many different approaches to a GAI, the initiative would essentially provide each citizen with a base sum of money. Harrison has studied this complex issue since the 1970s, and while the logistics of implementing a GAI system would be considerable, it would also offer a number of advantages. They include administrative efficiencies, the reduction or elimination of poverty and an increasingly mobile workforce that can afford to move around the country.

GAI supplements, however, are just one of many ideas being analysed at the Prentice Institute. And it's all part of an effort to inform public and private policies that will better reflect, and keep up with, a changing Canada and world. To raise awareness of this vital work, Prentice Institute researchers participate in conferences and dialogue sessions, and contribute to articles, journals and books. Finally, there are future plans to build international partnerships with sister institutes.

"There are many challenges that governments, corporations, education systems and individuals have to address," says McDaniel. "But once they have the information they need, they have the potential to act upon it.

"People are hungry for knowledge. And we're training them how to look beyond myths and build a better society. It will lead to better voters, parents, consumers and caregivers."

What can we learn from other countries with regard to population aging and social policy?

Population aging and economic challenges have raised questions about how social policy regimes are, or will be, affected in various types of economies. Some research indicates a downward convergence across countries is inevitable as global economic and demographic pressures work to bring greater homogeneity to social policies. Other studies suggest that demographic and economic pressures can actually have stimulating effects on social policies.

To address these issues, Prentice Institute researchers are investigating Japan, which has experienced population aging and economic challenges simultaneously. Scholars are analysing changing relations among demographics, economics and social policy. They ask what opportunities can be discerned from the experience of Japan for re-creation of social policy regimes elsewhere in the 21st century. Ultimately, researchers will widen the comparative lens to include other Asian and developed countries. The findings from this crucial research will guide policy-makers in various countries facing similar challenges.

Is there a "Canadian exceptionalism" in issues related to immigration and diversity?

The rapid rise in ethnic diversity in immigrant-receiving countries has resulted in a general anti-diversity, anti-multiculturalism sentiment. Some studies indicate that a generalized trust is more difficult to foster in a multicultural society, resulting in a loss of sense of community and togetherness. However, other research suggests that Canada might be immune from these largely European trends.

At the Prentice Institute, researchers are investigating the extent of, and the reasons for, this Canadian exceptionalism. A clearer understanding of the differences among ethno-racial groups in terms of labour-market integration and social capital could make a significant difference in the lives of Canadians and the global community.

To what extent is population, at root, a problem with respect to food security?

Food is a basic resource essential for human survival. It is estimated that at the end of 2009, more than one billion of the world's population did not have adequate food to meet basic nutritional needs. As the most populous country in the world, China is constantly challenged in providing food for its citizens. Given the sheer size and strategic prominence of China, food security there is a global concern.

As leaders of an international team, researchers at the Prentice Institute are examining the stress points related to food security in various regions in China. The set of indicators of food security and rural development they develop will be an important assessment tool in China and around the world.

How can we achieve economic equality in developing countries?

Throughout most of human history, the conditions of human life have varied from difficult to tolerable, from starvation to subsistence. In some parts of the developing world, these conditions have not changed much, while in others, progress has been made. Disparities in the distribution of economic assets and income exist in a wide range of societies and their nature and cause are issues our world must address.

Researchers at the Prentice Institute are studying how international trade can lead to growth and the distribution of income, especially in developing countries. Another crucial line of research focuses on the relationship between business cycles, poverty and income inequalities.

How will social policy address our aging population?

Wayne Gretzky is credited with saying, "You must skate to where the puck will be." In contemplating the future of aging populations, policy often skates instead to where the puck is now. The presumption is that by studying those who are older now, we can understand those who will be older in the future. But... the older of tomorrow will be very different, as will the socio-economic contexts in which they live.

As leaders of a Canada/U.S. multidisciplinary team, Prentice Institute researchers are studying how people in mid-life in Canada and the U.S. are aging in terms of health and overall well-being. How they help (or not) younger and older relatives now and as they age, and how they anticipate their later years relative to their older relatives now and their younger relatives as they reach their later years, are two of the important questions being addressed. These studies will yield a wealth of information that is critical to addressing policy and family needs in the future.

Programming Team Earns Second Place Finish At Rocky Mountain Regional

A 12-person group is split into four groups of three, and has to solve nine complex computer programming problems in a very short time. All the while, they are competing against more than 50 other teams from across North America as part of the Rocky Mountain region of the Association for Computing Machinery's (ACM) International Collegiate Programming Contest.

How did the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge group fare? Very well. Of the four teams in the competition from the U of L, one group took second place and three other teams landed in the middle third of the results – 23rd, 25th, and 29th place overall.

"Students have to apply what they learn in different courses, and some problems require knowledge of techniques or algorithms that are not taught in any course," says team advisor
Dr. Howard Cheng (mathematics and computer science). "These are taught during our regular practice sessions, where the teams spend several hours per week training for this contest."

The competition draws students from large and small colleges and universities throughout Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Eastern Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Alberta, Saskatchewan and New Mexico. The group received funding from the Faculty of Arts and Science as well as Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures to support the costs for participation.

Cheng says the contest requires logical thinking skills and precise implementation of their ideas.

"If their solution is incorrect for even one test case, it is considered wrong," he says.

The groups had limited time to complete a series of nine problems, which ranged from supposedly simple, to very complex.

"We had to figure out how to write code based on where the letter 't' appeared in a series of words," says Keilan Scholten, a third year mathematics and computer science student. "It seems simple, but we wound up using more than an hour and a half of our time allotment. The first six of our problems were done in just over two hours."

Among the problems, the group successfully created a ranking of teams for a soccer league, figured out the maximum number of climbers a piece of climbing rope can support and worked out a way to determine if packages of certain dimensions were the right size to be mailed.

Team group members included: (Team A) Darcy Best, Keilan Scholten, Hugh Ramp; (Team B) Jeremy Andrijancic, Johnny Boldt, Kim Wikkerink; (Team C) Mark Fischer, Mark Hunter, Fern Leavens; (Team D) Falcon Momot, Jason Racine and Fei Wang. Best (fourth year), Ramp (second year) and Scholten (third year) also finished third in the Alberta Collegiate Programming Contest, held in mid-October as a warm-up to the regional contest.

Alumnus Gregg wins prestigious prize

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge alumnus, Dr. Christopher Gregg (BSc '98), captured the 2010 Grand Prize in the annual international competition for The Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology.

Gregg is being recognized for his outstanding contributions to research on how the parental origin of a gene affects its expression in the developing and adult brains of offspring.

"My interests are now focused on determining whether maternal and/or paternal gene expression programs in offspring are altered according to stresses and environmental effects experienced by parents," says Gregg, a postdoctoral fellow in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Department at Harvard ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. "This is an exciting possibility that could reveal pathways that prepare offspring for the environment into which they will be born."

As the grand prize winner, Gregg receives $25,000 from Eppendorf, and his essay, Parental Control over the Brain, will be published in the November issue of the journal Science. Gregg will join the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Utah as an assistant professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy next year.

In his award-winning essay, Gregg explains how he and his team at Harvard sort out how mother- and father-specific genetic cues influence their offspring's brains. Gregg describes how the team developed a genome-wide approach to study these parental effects on different regions of the brain during various developmental stages.

Through experiments with mice, they document how rare, epigenetic marks on certain maternal and paternal genes—known as genome imprints—affect the timing of gene expression in the next generation. For example, these researchers have identified approximately 553 genes that are subject to these parental genome imprints at day 15 of embryonic development and just 372 genes under the influence of such parental effects in the adult brain.

"Genes that preferentially express one parent's copy can be especially vulnerable to the presence of a mutation, because the other copy that doesn't have the mutation isn't being expressed, so there is no backup," says Gregg. "This phenomenon is especially obvious in males with diseases involving mutations on the X chromosome. In females, these diseases tend to be less severe, because females have two X chromosomes, but males have only one."

His findings reveal some of the specific parental effects associated with brain development and diseases, such as multiple sclerosis—and they provide a roadmap for future research in this field.

"I believe these effects have major relevance for our understanding of brain evolution, function, and disease," says Gregg.

The Eppendorf and Science Prize in Neurobiology recognizes outstanding international neurobiological research based on current methods and advances in the field of molecular and cell biology by a young early-career scientist.

Fond memories & farewells

One of my first meetings with Bill Cade came within weeks of taking office as mayor when he called on me to live up to a campaign promise. Throughout the 2001 mayoralty campaign I had promoted the concept of a community-driven economic development model. Bill and several of his friends made it clear that it was not only a good idea, it was one they expected me to implement forthwith. And with Bill's guidance and support, Economic Development Lethbridge moved from vision to reality.

I was deeply moved at the time that a U of L president should be so engaged in his community. As I was to learn, this was just the first of a series of partnerships between the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the city that Bill had a hand in creating.

What kind of president has Bill been? Energetic, charismatic, passionate, considerate and above all, focused on the needs of students. Bill and Elsa have played important parts in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge story over the last 10 years, but they have also earned the respect and love of people they have come in contact with throughout the community. Good luck, my friend!

I have many reasons to thank Bill Cade, but the one that has meant the most to me is the interest and support he has shown for my mother and her work over the years. My mother is the Yiddish-language writer Chava Rosenfarb. Yiddish and the rich literature and culture associated with it are little known in Alberta. This is not surprising since the language itself is dying, a victim of the Holocaust. Today, there are few speakers and fewer readers. To have someone promote and encourage the work of a Yiddish writer the way Bill has done is truly remarkable and truly praiseworthy. To date, the U of L is the only university in Canada to have given an honorary degree to a Yiddish writer, despite the fact that Canada has been host to a vibrant Yiddish culture for more than a hundred years. I have no words to express how very moving this is to me and how grateful I am.

Bill's attribute of treating everybody with respect has endeared him to friends and business associates alike. When we met with a number of people in Ottawa promoting the U of L he impressed everyone with his passion and demeanour.

The first time I was in his office at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ my questions regarding his collection of crickets quickly led to a lesson on the reproductive machinations of the species.

Bill took great delight in introducing future ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students to the fascinating world of crickets.

I'm not sure how many people know that Bill is a hot rodder at heart and spent time at the drag strip in his day. I promised to take him for a blast in my 1967 GTX – haven't done that yet but will.

Dr. Cade! Make sure you take the time to reflect on what you have meant to the U of L and to southern Alberta, how much better the institution and all of us are for having you come to town. I hope you and your wonderful bride continue to enjoy peace and happiness.

I organized a luncheon for a visiting Chinese delegation that Bill attended. Roast beef was served along with a side of horseradish. A dish of horseradish was placed with the starting salad at every seat during the meal. Bill is very charismatic and of course was the focus of our luncheon. As we started the meal, he picked up his dish of horseradish and poured it all over his salad (thinking it was salad dressing). Before we knew it, every visitor from China was doing the same! In the following moments, everyone was digging into their salads and not understanding our instructions of "it's for the beef." Garden salad is not served in China and with the horseradish it must have been an unusual culinary experience for our guests – but a great story for us!

Five years ago, when I was being recruited for the presidency of Lethbridge College, I did lots of research on the institution and the community. When I found out that Dr. Bill Cade was a fellow Longhorn (we're both graduates of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Texas at Austin) I gave him a call to find out his perspective on Lethbridge as well as his impression of the relationship between the U of L and Lethbridge College.

I remember I was between flights and Bill spent 30 or 40 minutes with me on the phone, answering my questions and providing his insights. He also directed me to a U of L student who had transferred over from the College who was very helpful in providing further information.

I have very much enjoyed working with Bill. . . He is a colleague and a friend. I hope we'll still have a chance to catch up as he continues with his teaching and research at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Conversely, I would be happy to visit him in San Antonio, perhaps we could take in a football game at UT. Hook 'em, Horns!

Bill Cade is one of that rare breed who truly understands all of the roles they're expected to play in their position. He's equal parts academic, administrator, scientist and statesman. Dr. Cade hadn't officially started his term as President. I had a wall of students in front of me, all filling out forms. As Dr. Cade walked by the Registrar's Office, he looked over in my direction, smiled and waved.

I immediately looked behind me, as I thought Leslie or Debi was standing behind me, and he was waving to them. I thought to myself.....he couldn't possibly be waving to me, but he was. That simple gesture made my day!

In past years the Registrar's Office had instituted a photo line-up at convocation. After students came off the dais and had their picture taken, a lot of them were a bit disoriented and would walk off in the wrong direction.

I was positioned at the front to guide them with Mrs. Cade unofficially assisting me in her front row seat by pointing them in the right direction.

One of my first meetings with Bill Cade came within weeks of taking office as mayor when he called on me to live up to a campaign promise.

Throughout the 2001 mayoralty campaign I had promoted the concept of a community-driven economic development model.

Bill and several of his friends made it clear that it was not only a good idea, it was one they expected me to implement forthwith. And with Bill's guidance and support, Economic Development Lethbridge moved from vision to reality.

I was deeply moved at the time that a U of L president should be so engaged in his community. As I was to learn, this was just the first of a series of partnerships between the university and the city that Bill had a hand in creating.

The 1st Choice Savings Wellness Centre and the Community Stadium are two others that come to mind, but there are other important examples.

What kind of president has Bill been? Energetic, charismatic, passionate, considerate, and above all, focused on the needs of students.

Bill and Elsa have played important parts in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge story over the last ten years, but they have also earned the respect and love of people they have come in contact throughout the community. Good luck, my friend!

I have many reasons to thank Bill Cade, but the one that has meant the most to me is the interest and support he has shown for my mother and her work over the years.

My mother is the Yiddish-language writer Chava Rosenfarb. Yiddish and the rich literature and culture associated with it are little known in Alberta.

This is not surprising since the language itself is dying, a victim of the Holocaust. Today there are few speakers and fewer readers.

To have someone promote and encourage the work of a Yiddish writer the way Bill has done is thus truly remarkable and truly praiseworthy.

To date, the U of L is the only university in Canada to have given an honorary degree to a Yiddish writer, despite the fact that Canada has been host to a vibrant Yiddish culture for over a hundred years.

First of all thanks for this opportunity to pay tribute to someone I will always consider a friend.

From the first time I shook Bill Cade's hand I felt completely at ease with him.

I do recall thinking "Is that a Texas accent I hear?" Oh yes it was.

Bill's attribute of treating everybody with respect has endeared him to friends and business associates alike. When we met with a number of people in Ottawa promoting the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge he impressed everyone with his passion and demeanour.

The first time I was in his office at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ my questions regarding his collection of crickets quickly led to a lesson on the reproductive machinations of the species.

His interest in how each person at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ contributed to it's success endeared him to people on and off campus.

During one election campaign, I received an invitation to take part in a polar swim fund raiser at Park Lake. When I saw that Bill was on the list of participants, I quickly sent him a pledge and wished him well, to his credit he got the job done without any lingering damage.

I'm not sure how many people know that Bill is a hot rodder at heart and spent time at the drag strip in his day, I promised to take him for a blast in my 1967 GTX, haven't done that yet but will.

Dr. Cade! Make sure you take the time to reflect on what you have meant to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and southern Alberta, how much better the institution and all of us are for having you come to town. I hope you and your wonderful bride continue to enjoy peace and happiness.

I have to admit to becoming a big fan of Bill and Elsa Cade.

Our first meeting was in my office. He insisted on coming to me. How about that!

To me, it was a generous thing to do and indicated his strong character personified by a professional humbleness that I was not used to in my previous interactions with American scholars. When I discovered that he had taken out Canadian citizenship, well then, I was hooked!

Bill's cooperation with Lethbridge College was essential at the time of his arrival and I thank him eternally for it.

I was on a shoot at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Theatre and Bill walked by and said, "Hi Dory…Hi Ted!" Ted, our cameraperson, was completely floored that Bill would remember his name! That is a real gift!"

What was your first impression of Bill?

I met Bill Cade the first time in an elevator and he was friendly, asking me about my work and role at the university.

The second time I saw him in the hallway he greeted me by name. He did that with everyone he met: learned the faculty, support staff, the cleaners' names... everybody and talked with all of us about our work...

He recognized and called people by name all over the campus.

What do you most admire about Bill?
Savvy leadership, deep academic experience and communication skills with public and with individuals, whatever level they are at.

His forthrightness and efficiency, with an ability to know what is most important and whatever isn't at all. Balance. Respect for his family and Elsa and the positive way he speaks about her. His friendliness and courage to be tough when necessary. High standards. His advocacy for the right to do research, the need for the university to be protected as a liberal arts university, social justice, speaking out for balance of gender and minorities.

What opportunities have you been given during Bill's presidency?
To be on the board of governors, to contribute my views... he has ears to hear, to be part of the university community, to have a women's scholars series, to feel confident in my university's management and leadership skills, to feel I work for a good organization, to feel proud of the importance of teaching.

What was something surprising you discovered about Bill?
He's a good cook and a wine aficionado, he likes dogs, drag racing, and he taught public school.

What made Bill an excellent president?
Knowledge of universities and all his people, the role of a university in the public domain, ability to forge meaningful working relationships, to call bullshit when necessary, practical know-how brought to bear on complex issues, new ideas, openness, dedication to due and fair process.

Recall a time when you saw Bill in action behind-the-scenes.
Arguing for the good of the university behind closed doors with board members, honoring professors' work and students' work. Kindness to people upset by life's difficult circumstances.

Share a funny story.
Being in his office and interrupting university talk with an invitation to watch his six-legged friends moult, or something dining on crickets with a mixture of pride and happiness.

Share a sentimental story.
It matters to me that he said he couldn't get through Goldie Morgantaler mother's speech on accepting her honorary degree about being a graduate of the second world war, of Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen, without tears. It reveals a deep humanity.Share your thanks.

The one word I would use to describe Dr. Bill Cade is: advocate (for quality higher learning).

I remember very clearly one day approximately 9 years ago when Dr. Cade invited my four-year-old twin boys and myself to come and view his life's work with his crickets.

We started in his office and I learned firsthand what patience he had. My boys were touching all of his irreplaceable objects in his office without any scared shrieking from Dr. Cade. In fact, he encouraged them.

Once we had viewed his office, we were taken down to the 4th Floor to see his lab. You can imagine the excitement of four year old boys to see a room filled with crickets.

They were fascinated as Dr. Cade showed them the crickets at various stages of growth. At one point, one of the cages with the babies tipped over and my boys were scrambling to save their lives.

As Dr. Cade talked about all the interesting facts regarding the crickets, he had two boys hugging him and continually asking questions.

It was a very unique experience, one that I know we will never forget. Dr. Cade, thank you for your patience and kindness shown to my children.

I find Bill Cade very personable. When I said, "hello Dr. Cade", he responded, "just call me Bill!" He's always gone out of his way to say "hi" to me and shake my hand.

I recall a time I was coming back from lunch, Bill was walking down the hall with the Education Minister and other senior officials. He stopped to say hello and introduced me to the others. I was shocked and in awe that he would take time out of his busy schedule for me!

When Bill Cade first came to our campus as the new President, I was the president of the AUPE local here on campus and our executive was one of the groups he met with to discuss concerns, share ideas, etc.

Being personable as he was, he also asked about our families and lives outside work. One of the things that I shared with him was that my husband was an alum and my son was a current student, majoring in philosophy.

Weeks later, I was with my family at a local restaurant when Bill walked in. He immediately came over to our table, shaking my son and husband's hands, calling them by their first names and relating what I had told him about their time at the university.

We were amazed that, considering all the people he was meeting in his introduction to the U of L, he would remember these details about us. But that's Bill – people matter to him.

I organized a luncheon for a visiting Chinese delegation that Bill attended. Roast beef was served along with a side of horseradish -- and the dish of horseradish was placed with the starting salad at every seat during the meal.

Bill is very charismatic and of course was the focus of our luncheon.

As we started the meal, he picked up his dish of horseradish and poured it all over his salad (thinking it was salad dressing).

Before we knew it, every visitor from China was doing the same!

In the following moments, everyone was digging into their salads and not understanding our instructions of "it's for the beef".

Garden salad is not served in China and with the horseradish it must have been an unusual culinary experience for our guests but a great story for us!"

"Five years ago, when I was being recruited for the Presidency of Lethbridge College, I did lots of research on the institution and the community. When I found out that Dr. Bill Cade was a fellow Longhorn (we're both graduates of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Texas at Austin) I gave him a call to find out his perspective on Lethbridge as well as his impression of the relationship between the U of L and Lethbridge College.

I remember I was between flights somewhere in the US and Bill spent thirty or forty minutes with me on the phone, answering my questions and providing his insights. He also directed me to a U of L student who had transferred over from the College who also was very helpful in providing further information.

Bill and I have been breakfasting regularly since my arrival in Lethbridge. Our biggest challenge is always around remembering whose turn it is to pay. (smile)

Aside from the many transfer arrangements that were already in place, during Bill's tenure Lethbridge College now delivers the first two years of the U of L's Nursing Degree. We are also collaborating on a post-degree program to fast-track new nurses into the workplace. There are other opportunities in discussion as the two Lethbridge institutions look at how best to serve our students.

I have very much enjoyed working with Bill. . . he is a colleague and a friend. I hope we'll still have a chance to catch up over a meal as he continues with his teaching and research at the university. Conversely, I would be happy to visit him in San Antonio. . . perhaps we could take in a football game at UT. Hook 'em, Horns!

"The most memorable thing I remember about Bill Cade (and I have told this story many many times) is that he was here in our office prior to his July 1 start date to meet with Leslie. He spoke to me for perhaps 1 to 2 minutes.

Weeks later, I received a telephone call and picked up the phone answering Good Morning, Registrar's Office and this Texas drawl came back, "Is that you Linda?"

I almost fell off my chair. He met and spoke to many on campus that week he stopped by here and he remembered my name after a two minute conversation! That just blew me away. His incredible memory is an excellent quality and I think he has had a profound impact on those he met which has served the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ well.

I would like to wish Elsa and Bill the very best and please know that you will be missed.

When I first met Bill Cade, he made me laugh by 'joking' with me about how uncomfortable he was with all things medical in nature and how he avoided medical issues.

But I began to realize that he must have unknowingly started "Bill's Medical Curse" because suddenly all kinds of large-scale health concerns began affecting the entire university.

Starting with SARS scare/concern in 2003, we had large-scale communicable disease outbreaks of meningitis, mumps, H1N1, norovirus, as well as the other more typical viruses such as HPV, mononucleosis and strep.

We had public health scares with avian flu worries and measles concerns. Of course, then Bill changed his mind about us medical personnel when he had a bit of a health scare himself a few years back and maybe that helped to 'lift the curse'. My best wishes to Bill and his lovely wife Elsa for a HEALTHY and happy retirement!

I had the fortunate pleasure of meeting Bill and Elsa while I was a student at the U of L through their personal and professional connection to my late brother-in-law John Gill, and my sister Tanya Gill.

"After the election of 2008, I had the opportunity to meet with Bill Cade at the Legislature in Edmonton. Bill , Bob Turner, and myself sat down for a coffee and a quick chat in the cafeteria, the quick chat turned into a full half hour of visiting like we were old friends.

Bill is a very sincere welcoming man, who converses easily and comfortably with people from all walks of life. Prior to that first meeting I remember thinking to myself that it was going to be an awkward meeting, with not a lot of common issues between us, to discuss outside of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, but thankfully I was wrong.

I have been lucky enough to have had many meetings and discussions over the past 2 years, and always the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and Education was Bill's priority.

When I mentioned that my daughter had started her first year at Uof L , Bill encouraged me to have her give him a call and stop by for a visit sometime.

For a few months she procrastinated thinking that he would be too busy and was not really serious. Finally when she did make an appointment to visit Bill, she found that he was not only the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ President, but more over he was a friend, a friend from a different walk of life, a friend from a different generation, but someone who made every effort to be a friend.

The world would be a better place if more people were like Bill Cade.

Bill Cade is one of that rare breed who truly understand all of the roles they're expected to play in their position. He's equal parts academic, administrator, scientist and statesman.

Although I do not have a long history of knowing Bill and I do not have any specific story to share I do want to acknowledge that he was one of the main reasons I have reengaged with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge after 18 years.

When I first met Bill Cade in my office in Calgary it was shortly after becoming a donor of the Markin Hall project.

We were discussing the progress and development of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and the current projects being undertaken.

As I listened to Bill speak I could feel his passion and excitement for what he was building.

He believed in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, he believed the people working at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, and he believed in the difference he was making for the students.

He asked me to become involved with the Advancement Committee and I decided immediately, knowing, that he is a man of action and really does make things happen.

He smiled when I asked him if committee work and my involvement would actually get results - he said - "We want individuals involved with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ that will make a difference".

So, what I am really saying is he is the reason an Alum like myself is involved with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Bill's leadership will no doubt be a loss to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, however, his vision will be carried on by the next generation.

I wish Bill and Elsa all the best in the future and I look forward to his life updates in the future.

I am not sure if I am too late with this but I would like to mention the first tour I went on after a senate meeting of the theater. I made a casual comment to Bill about recruitment for the university while on the tour. By Monday he had John Kincaid in contact with me to follow up on the comment! He doesn't miss a thing!

Also I am not sure you were there when he told the story of the streaker in the new stadium....after an enthusiastic monologue of the young man's escapade, without cracking a smile with his deep Texas accent, he said, "of course my official stance is I am shocked and appalled"". Most of us were nearly in tears laughing by this point.

I am sure you ave lots of things submitted but these are two things I remember that endear him to many.

I recall a story told by Bill in his earlier years at the U of L. He arrived at the Coutts border with a collection of insects The Immigration person asked Bill to explain why he was bringing insects into Canada from the USA.

Bill got pissed off and asked if it would be better if he just let all the insects escape. This irked the border patrol person who insisted that Bill would have to wait until an expert academic was called to the border from Calgary to vouch that the insects would not harm Canadians.

This caused Bill to have to wait more than three hours for another academic to vouch for the insects and for Bill, who was and is a first class entymologist.

Insult was added to injury when the entylologist from Calgary signed the form presented to her without even examining the insects.

Not the best WELCOME TO CANADA that Bill ever received. I found it as amusing as Bill latterly did.

What do a former Olympic rower and a pilot have in common? If they are Zoe Hoskins Light and Brent Stock, they are both students in the new After Degree Nursing Program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Designed to increase opportunities for people interested in pursuing jobs in health care, the program is an accelerated course of study available to anyone who has previously earned a degree in any discipline or field of study. The 80-credit program is offered over six consecutive semesters and leads to a Bachelor of Nursing degree. Once complete, students have the option to write the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination to become Registered Nurses (RN).

The After Degree Nursing Program was a perfect fit for Zoe Hoskins Light.

"There is a growing shortage of Registered Nurses working in clinical, research, and teaching positions," says Jean Harrowing, assistant professor. "The After Degree program was created to address the urgent need for nurses in provincial, national, and global practice."

For Hoskins Light, the transition from athletics to nursing was a natural evolution, although the first degree she earned was far removed from anything related to health. Hoskins Light graduated from the School of Journalism at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Southern California in 2002. A profession in health care, however, always held appeal. Her father and brother are both physicians, and Hoskins Light developed an appreciation for the dynamics of the human body as an athlete. She attended USC on a rowing scholarship, and after graduation, went straight into training with the Canadian National Rowing Team leading up to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. After taking a few prerequisite science courses, Hoskins Light enrolled in the After Degree program in 2009.

"My own interactions with health care got me interested in nursing," Hoskins Light says. "The dynamics of how the body works drew me to the profession, but I really like the human aspect of it – caring for people."

For Stock, the path to the program was slightly more practical. As the father of four young children, Stock was looking for a career that not only interested him, but also offered a high level of job security. Stock originally attended university in Utah, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Aviation Professional Pilot degree. The events of September 11, 2001 put his dream of flying for a living on hold indefinitely. Stock then moved his family to California to pursue a career in real estate. He worked in construction and owned a real estate investment company for several years, but after the market crash, he needed to switch gears again.

"I needed something that was recession proof," Stock says. "I moved my family to Canada with the intention of becoming a paramedic firefighter, but a friend told me about the After Degree program and I found it to be a perfect fit."

Hoskins Light and Stock are just two among a cohort of first-time nursing students in the program, and their diverse backgrounds are a microcosm of the balance of the students on the enrollment roster.

"Our students have degrees in sciences, humanities, arts and fine arts," says Harrowing. "They've worked in many different professions and disciplines, and bring a rich variety of experience to the program, as well as a certain level of maturity and wisdom."

Application deadline for the fall semester is May 1, 2010.

Prentice Institute director Dr. Susan McDaniel will headline the next edition of the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs as she presents, You've Got to Start Young: Aging in Canada and the U.S.

To be held Thursday, Apr. 8 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Country Kitchen Catering, McDaniel's presentation delves into the topic of population aging and to what extent this challenges health care and pension issues.

McDaniel is the Prentice Research Chair in Global Population and Economy, director of the Prentice Institute and professor of sociology at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

She relocated to Lethbridge in the summer of 2009 from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Utah where she was professor and senior investigator in the Institute for Public & International Affairs.

McDaniel is an internationally known sociologist/social demographer, the author of many books and research articles. She is a frequent advisor on social and science policies both in Canada and elsewhere.

McDaniel asks, based on her current research in both Canada and the United States, to what extent is population aging a challenge?

Further, she questions whether population aging is an equal challenge in Canada and the U.S. How does the current economic situation affect the picture? What about diversity, inequalities and changing family/household living arrangements?

The specific focus in this talk is on the circumstances of those aged 45-64 in Canada and the U.S. in the late 1990s and 2000s, how their lives look, as they grow older and what policy challenges are posed.

Admission for this event is priced at $10 and includes a light lunch.

Global institute draws renowned demographics researcher

Nothing illustrates the role of the economy in our lives like the current economic downturn.

With families across North America foreclosing on mortgages, baby boomers delaying retirement and new graduates scrambling for jobs, almost every demographic has been affected.

The economy is an ever-evolving force with tremendous influence on how and where people live. In fact, understanding how global populations and economies inform one another is crucial for understanding everything from international relations to when Canadians retire, explains Dr. Susan McDaniel, the newly appointed Prentice Institute Director and Research Chair.

A renowned demography expert, McDaniel returns to Alberta from Utah, where she was a senior scholar at the Institute of Public and International Affairs and Professor of Family and Consumer Studies at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Utah from 2007 to 2009. She will lead the new Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy, which is the product of a multi-million dollar endowment from Alberta agribusiness entrepreneur, the late Dr. John Prentice (LLD '06) and his family.

"It's interdisciplinary, so the institute is expected to bring in researchers from across Alberta, Canada and the world. It will be a global institute focused on global issues and a global population," she explains.

McDaniel previously spent 15 years at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta as a full professor of sociology and another three at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Windsor. She currently holds grants from agencies like the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

One of her current research projects focuses on perceptions of aging and retirement trends. In a recent study - soon to go to press- she interviewed middle-age Canadians and Americans during the financial crisis to find out how they anticipated their older years.

Many Americans expressed panic about how they'd manage their health, while Canadians were more proactive, expressing greater confidence that they'd handle whatever challenges they encountered.

"That's what's so exciting about doing this research; you discover such interesting things," she says.

While the institute is still in development, McDaniel believes it will become an area of extreme excellence for which the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ will become known.

"It's a tribute to the U of L that they managed this. The funding could have gone to any of the universities, but it came here," she says.

Numbers can be cold, hard and impersonal. Put them in the hands of Dr. Susan McDaniel however and they can be used to influence policy decisions that effect change at the most personal of levels.

The newly appointed director of the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy is an internationally renowned sociology researcher and demographics expert, combining her love for mathematics with a penchant to study people and society's big-picture issues. It was a research focus that was initially unintentional but has proven to be a life's work.

"Demography allows you to see how individual actions don't add up to what you think they'll add up to," McDaniel explains.
"The collective outcome of individual actions is very different than what the individuals intend and it's that kind of mystery that entices me. To me it's phenomenal because some of it is counter-intuitive and I'm still fascinated by that."

McDaniel returns to Alberta (the place she mostly refers to as home) from Utah where she was a senior scholar at the Institute of Public and International Affairs and Professor of Family and Consumer Studies at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Utah. Previously, she'd spent 15 years at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta as a full professor of sociology and another three years at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Windsor.

Her return is a testament to the U of L, its vision and the opportunity afforded her as the first director of the Prentice Institute.

"There were no push factors for me leaving Utah, it was all pull," McDaniel says. "I'm hoping to really build this institute as a centre that people will say, 'The Prentice Institute is a leader on . . .'. That would really be great."

The mandate of the Prentice Institute is to promote the research of big-picture issues relating to global population change and demographics, among other topics. McDaniel is enthused by the opportunity to be in on the ground floor of constructing the Institute and its reputation.

"My goal is building something that's not just flash and dash but something solid that will last for a long time, and when people think about population issues and economy, they think about the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge," she says.

Getting to this point has been a long and non-traditional route for McDaniel.
Entering post-secondary study as a math major, a bad experience in her first course turned her eye elsewhere and she found demography.

"It was a question of using mathematics to study people and I thought, wow, I've found my calling," she says.

Through demography she slowly made her way into studying the societal impacts of her demographic research. Ironically, she is now world renowned as a research sociologist, has written an introductory sociology textbook and taught the course at a post-secondary level but because she entered the field through the back door, never actually took introductory sociology.

McDaniel's extensive research, publishing and teaching record reflect her varied interests and research on demographic aging, generational relations, family change and the social impacts of technology.

The arrival of the Prentice Institute comes at a perfect time for the U of L as it continues to emerge as a leading comprehensive university. McDaniel revels in building graduate programming, has a long record of collaborating with the best doctoral and post-doctoral researchers and trumpets the concept of community outreach, from local to international levels.

"The idea is to build interdisciplinary research that will have public and policy interest, but also to have outreach to the community. I want to see public issues of importance addressed here, and in a profound way," McDaniel says.
"What interests me is the notion that this is global. This is a new concept at the U of L and an area of strength that we're planning on building."

Dr. Susan McDaniel is coming back to Alberta, and it is only the lure of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Prentice Institute that could bring her home.

The Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy, a unique research institute housed at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, has appointed McDaniel as its director. Internationally recognized as a sociology researcher and demographics expert, McDaniel is the latest high profile researcher to target the U of L as a preferred destination, further enhancing its credentials as an emerging comprehensive university.

"Dr. McDaniel's appointment shows that the U of L is maturing as a leading comprehensive research university," says Vice-President Academic and Provost, Dr. Andy Hakin. "Dr. McDaniel will be attracting people and resources to the Institute that will have direct benefits for our undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, research and community outreach."

The Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy was established in late 2006, when John Prentice, a Calmar, Alta., based agri-business entrepreneur, with his wife, Connie, donated $8.25 million to the U of L - the largest private philanthropic gift the U of L has received in its 40-year history.

"Dr. McDaniel is our first Endowed Chair from the Prentice Institute's investment and is the realization of the Prentice family's desire to develop the Institute as a world leader in global population research," adds Hakin.

McDaniel is a former Alberta resident who was most recently a senior scholar at the Institute of Public and International Affairs and Professor of Family and Consumer Studies at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Utah.

She joins the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge formally on July 1, 2009 as a Professor in the Department of Sociology in addition to her five-year appointment as Prentice Institute Director. As well as being heavily involved in research, graduate education and research leadership as Director of the Prentice Institute, Dr. McDaniel will also contribute to the undergraduate teaching program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

"The pull for me to consider this position is that our research focus will be global," says McDaniel. "I welcome the opportunity to conduct collaborative research with colleagues on campus and also plan to attract masters, doctoral and post-doctoral level researchers to Lethbridge to explore the key themes of the Prentice Institute."

McDaniel added that she plans to engage the local and regional community in projects that help explain the Institute's purpose and the relevance of the research that the Institute will be conducting.

McDaniel's extensive research, publishing and teaching record reflect her varied interests and research on demographic aging, generational relations, family change and the social impacts of technology.
