Science, the PUBlic Professor Series lectures have grown to include the breadth of research expertise on campus, including representation from all its Faculties and Schools.</span></span><div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/PubProf2025-26.jpg" alt=""></div></p><p><span><span>&ldquo;The PUBlic Professor Series is one of our key opportunities to showcase the excellent work being done by our faculty members to the external community. It&rsquo;s really an important example of the research activities taking place throughout campus and how impactful that work is on everyone&rsquo;s daily lives,&rdquo; says Dr. Dena McMartin, ULethbridge&rsquo;s vice-president (research). </span></span></p><p><span><span>The 2025-26 season kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025, when Faculty of Fine Arts professor Dr. Anne Dymond presents, From a Communist Doctor to Madonna&rsquo;s Cone Bra: Museums and Cultural Diplomacy in Troubled Times. Her presentation will take place in a community location to be finalized as the PUBlic Professor Series continues to visit new venues to connect with more community members.</span></span></p><p><span><span>&ldquo;We started moving the talks around this past year, using venues that opened the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ up to new audiences, and found it to be very successful,&rdquo; adds McMartin. &ldquo;PUBlic Professor is for the public, we want to meet them where they frequent, especially when topics lend themselves to specific locations.&rdquo;</span></span></p><p><span><span>Ensuing talks will take place in October and November, and then January, February and March 2026 and include speakers from the Faculty of Arts &amp; Science, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences and Dhillon School of Business. It traditionally features three U of L professors talking about life lessons that cannot be learned in the classroom, posing the question to them, &ldquo;If you could talk about just one thing for your last lecture, what would it be?&rdquo;</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>This spring, with an in-person event not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ULSU is co-hosting with the student club PACT (philanthropy, advancement, community, traditions) and taking the event online. They have also expanded the lecturer list to an impressive eight speakers who represent a broad cross-section of disciplines from throughout campus. Celebrating a theme of adaptability, this impressive group will be online Friday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to present their individual thoughts on what adaptability means to them.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>&ldquo;With most end-of-semester events cancelled, we wanted an initiative that could bring the uLethbridge community together,&rdquo; says Kierian Turner, one of the event organizers and a past PACT president. &ldquo;The Last Lecture has always been important to students of the graduating class, so we prioritized moving to an online model so that students are still able to get that final takeaway. The fact she had no connection to the country or that it was halfway around the world did not diminish her sense of responsibility. She had to act.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:432px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/Dymond-Charlie.jpg" title="Dr. Anne Dymond receives the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Volunteer Award from Chancellor Charles Weaselhead." alt=""><div class="image-caption">Dr. Anne Dymond receives the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Volunteer Award from Chancellor Charles Weaselhead.</div></div></p><p>Dymond soon became a central figure in the push to bring people displaced by violence to the city of Lethbridge.</p><p>&ldquo;Anne&rsquo;s involvement in every aspect of the relocation of Syrian refugees here to southern Alberta represents all that is good in our society,&rdquo; says U of L Chancellor Charles Weaselhead. &ldquo;She looked at what was a very large problem and found a way for our community to make a very meaningful difference in the lives of these newcomers to Canada.&rdquo;</p><p>Dymond created a committee at the U of L whose goal was to sponsor people displaced by violence and bring them to Lethbridge. Her involvement included raising awareness around campus, initiating fundraising activities and working with partner groups who would be essential in facilitating the arrival of a new family.</p><p>In February 2016, the first family of four Syrian refugees arrived. Dymond and the Refugee Action Committee realized how many government-sponsored refugees could also use additional support, and she knew the community was ready and willing to help. She played a central role in helping a student group establish a World Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Service of Canada chapter at the U of L that sponsored a student refugee. The group lobbied all Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ students to agree to pay $2/term which will allow the club to sponsor a qualified refugee to escape violence and study at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ every year.</p><p>Dymond is currently out of the country but will be recognized throughout the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬&rsquo;s Convocation week activities, with her award celebrated at the Chancellor&rsquo;s Dinner, Thursday, May 30, 2019 at the Coast Lethbridge Hotel. Beginning as an assistant professor in the Department of Art, she advanced the study of art history and eventually assumed the role of Chair of the department in 2010-11.</p><p>Dymond understands that teaching focuses on learning and that all learners have both strengths and challenges. She believes a good teacher must employ multiple techniques to take learners from where they are to where the course objectives want to take them. She seeks to meet her students&rsquo; needs through classes that promote active learning and by creating an atmosphere where students assume responsibility for their own learning.</p><p>She believes in the philosophy of creating a community of learners that extends beyond the classroom. When master&#39;s student Cassandra Allenby (BFA &#39;15) thinks about video games she sees the potential for so much more.</p><p>&ldquo;I love video games, playing them and creating them. That&rsquo;s what brought me to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge New Media program,&rdquo; says Allenby. &ldquo;But I realized the field is saturated so I started thinking about other things I could do with these same interests.&rdquo;<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/FA-NewMedia-Cassandra.jpg" title="Studying in the Master of Fine Arts New Media program, Cassandra Allenby sees great potential in using video game technology in other realms. PHOTO by Sally Leung.</div></div></p><p>U of L new media faculty helped direct her interest into new areas; specifically, immersive technology.</p><p>&ldquo;Dr. David Clearwater, Dana Cooley and, my graduate studies supervisor, James Graham all work in this area,&rdquo; explains Allenby. &ldquo;For example, James uses technology to interact with cultural objects. It enables play in immersive environments and a potential for knowledge acquisition and engineering experiences.&rdquo;</p><p>Although Graham&rsquo;s theory classes may be credited for piquing her interest, her current area of study and focus of her MFA research was inspired by art professor Dr. Anne Dymond.</p><p>Dymond put a call out for students to help research an idea. She observed how her young children were able to learn and memorize while playing video games and wanted to figure out how to inspire this same level of knowledge acquisition in the classroom. Allenby worked with Dymond as part of the internship element of the BFA - New Media program and was inspired to take on more in-depth research around how technology can affect humans.</p><p>These one-on-one relationships and opportunities to work with faculty members drew Allenby to continue her studies in the U of L&#39;s MFA program.</p><p>&ldquo;I know I can approach faculty members and other students for help,&rdquo; says Allenby. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a very open community with lots of knowledge sharing: like having open-source information available. Not to mention the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge is in the top three universities in the country for research.&rdquo;</p><p>As an MFA student, Allenby&rsquo;s goal is to explore the potentiality of technology by creating new systems and legitimizing game mechanics and technologies in the art world and for the general public.</p><p>&ldquo;People view play, particularly video games, as frivolous. I&rsquo;m trying to put &lsquo;play&rsquo; in a different context,&rdquo; says Allenby. &ldquo;The framework is there to do amazing things but it isn&rsquo;t being used to its full potential. I want to legitimize how it can be used and make it accessible to the general public for social activism, political activism and even in the workplace.&rdquo;</p><p>Allenby looks forward to sharing these ideas during her presentation &ldquo;The Art of Play&rdquo; on Saturday, January 16, 2015 as one of 17 graduate students presenting in the second annual <a href="https://www.uleth.ca/notice/events/fine-arts-graduate-students-colloquium" rel="nofollow">Fine Arts Graduate Student Colloquium</a>. Almost everyone who donated money said they want to help settle people and donate household goods or provide language lessons or be actively involved in other ways.&rdquo;</p><p>The U of L Refugee Action committee is one of several subgroups working under the banner of the &ldquo;From Syria to Lethbridge&rdquo; group started by the Lethbridge Mennonite Church. Many churches across southern Alberta are also part of the initiative and, collectively, they plan to bring at least seven Syrian refugee families to Lethbridge. The U of L component has committed to support one family of four.</p><p>To help them reach their fundraising goal of $36,000, various fundraisers have been organized by students, faculty and staff.</p><p>The U of L Conservatory Choirs, led by Kathy Matkin-Clapton, have recorded a Christmas CD and pledged to donate $2 from the sale of every CD. &lsquo;A Winter&rsquo;s Night&rsquo; can be purchased through <a href="http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/universityoflethbridgeco" rel="nofollow">CD Baby</a>or through the <a href="http://musicalive.ca/our-music/" rel="nofollow">U of L Conservatory of Music Choirs website.</a> CDs can also be purchased at the Casa front desk, Prim Health and Beauty, and Joey&rsquo;s Seafood Restaurant. The card, designed by U of L alumna April Matisz (BFA &rsquo;09), has been printed courtesy of the President&rsquo;s Office. The cost is $2 per card, $5 for three or $15 for 10.</p><p>&ldquo;I put it on our Facebook page and got orders for 170 in less than half an hour,&rdquo; says Dymond.</p><p>Students have also created their own fundraising efforts. A group of students in the Global Citizenship Cohort has organized a bottle drive on Dec. 12 and 13.</p><p>In addition, students are setting up a new club on campus affiliated with the World Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Service of Canada (WUSC). The organization&rsquo;s Student Refugee Program allows Canadian students to raise funds to help student refugees realize their educational goals at Canadian post-secondary schools.</p><p>&ldquo;In January, they&rsquo;ll do a drive to increase awareness. They&rsquo;ve been such active contributors to our side of the project,&rdquo; says Dymond. &ldquo;It has been lovely to see those students working together because they&rsquo;ve come from all across campus.&rdquo;</p><p>Anyone interested in helping out can connect to the committee through its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/421781628014907/" rel="nofollow">Facebook page</a>. Because the U of L cannot issue tax receipts for donations destined for another organization, the funds raised by the U of L committee are going to the Anglican Church of Ascension in Coaldale, where Phillips ministers. Those who would like to contribute money can make cheques payable to Church of the Ascension and indicate &ldquo;Syrian Refugee Appeal&rdquo; on the memo line. Donations of $20 or more will receive a tax receipt. The committee has people from every Faculty and staff from a wide range of fields. schema:articleBody"> <p>Former Pronghorn swimmer <strong>Richard Hortness</strong>, swimming for his hometown Alberta Marlin Aquatic Club out of Medicine Hat, set a new Canadian record at the 2009 Short Course Spring Nationals in Toronto in March. Hortness, who was with the Pronghorns in 2004-05, teamed with Brent Hayden, Rory Biskuspi and Tommy Gossland to set a new 4 x 50 metre freestyle relay record.</p> <p><strong>Lisa Lambert</strong> (BA '91, MA '07) was recently honoured as a YWCA of Lethbridge, 2009 Woman of Distinction for her work as a social advocate. Currently teaching a Canadian Politics course at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, Lambert is also working on her doctorate degree.</p> <p>Winners of the U of L Plays and Prose Writing Competition were: Plays &ndash; <strong>James Forbes</strong> (1st), <strong>Adam Beauchesne</strong> (2nd), <strong>Trista Green </strong>(3rd) and Prose &ndash; <strong>Dave Bryant</strong> (1st), <strong>Adam Sarjeant</strong> (2nd), <strong>Henry Heavy Shield</strong> (3rd).</p> <p>Several drama faculty, staff, and alumni were involved in the recent New West Theatre production of The Drawer Boy. <strong>Ron Chambers</strong> (Theatre &amp; Dramatic Arts), <strong>Marek Czuma</strong> (Theatre &amp; Dramatic Arts) and <strong>Jeremy Park </strong>(BFA '08) acted; <strong>Gail Hanrahan</strong> (Theatre &amp; Dramatic Arts) directed; <strong>David Barrus</strong> (staff) was set designer; <strong>Rebecca Toon </strong>(BFA '06) designed the costumes; <strong>Kelly Roberts</strong> (staff) designed was sound designer and <strong>Lindsey Zess-Funk</strong> (BFA '07) was stage manager.</p> <p>The U of L's <strong>07/08 Report &ndash; Rethink About It </strong>&ndash; received a silver award in the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) 2009 PRIX D'EXCELLENCE awards program in the best institutional annual report category.</p> <p>The Report, which is the U of L's annual report to the community, was distributed to 335,000 households in October 2008. The Report is produced by the Communications Office within Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Advancement.</p> <p>This is the third consecutive year that the Report has received an award from CCAE. The catalogue has just been launched and Mitchell's exhibition is on tour across Canada and comes to the U of L Art Gallery, Sept. 18 &ndash; Oct. 30, 2009.</p> <p><strong>Dr. Rolf Boon's</strong> (Music) composition, Bike Ride, has been selected for publication in the Canadian National Conservatory of Music's Northern Lights Level 5B Musical Discoveries collection. This is the eighth of Rolf's works that CNCM has published.</p> <p><strong>Dr. David Renter</strong> (Music) recently recorded with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Saskatchewan Jazz Ensemble in Saskatoon. The group recorded one of Renter's big band compositions called Kukai and he was the featured soloist on several other selections during the recording. The CD will be released later this year.</p> <p><strong>Dagmar Dahle</strong> (Art), <strong>Don Gill </strong>(Art), <strong>Mary Kavanagh </strong>(Art), and <strong>Tanya Harnett </strong>(Art) had exhibition publications recently released by the Southern Alberta Art Gallery.</p> <p><strong>Dr. Josephine Mills</strong> (Director/Curator U of L art Gallery) has been accepted into the Getty Leadership Institute's museum program. The program is an intensive three weeks in Los Angeles during July in the Museum Leadership Institute 2009.</p> <p><strong>Richard Epp </strong>(Theatre &amp; Dramatic Arts) acted in Theatre Calgary's recent production of An Ideal Husband, by Oscar Wilde.</p> <p><strong>Lisa Doolittle</strong> (Theatre &amp; Dramatic Arts) and <strong>Jean Harrowing</strong> (Health Sciences) have recently received an Award of Distinction from the Internationalizing the Teaching and Learning Practice program for their work with students in Malawi last summer. The award is presented by Advanced Education and Technology.</p> <p>To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Music Department at Dalhousie Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, distinguished alumni are being invited back to perform. <strong>Dr. Blaine Hendsbee</strong> (Music) was the tenor soloist in a concert of Mozart's Requiem, Apr. 7, in Halifax.
