Boil Water Order in effect at ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, throughout region

The City of Lethbridge has issued a Boil Water Order. This action does affect those living, working and studying on our Lethbridge campus.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will remain open with regularly scheduled classes for the duration of this Boil Water Order.

On Wednesday, Mar. 12, the City of Lethbridge declared a local state of emergency due to a critical water storage situation. In response, the City closed its pools and arenas to conserve water. Following the City’s lead, the U of L closed the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre and showers in the 1st Choice Savings Centre. The pool will remain closed and showers turned off until the Boil Water Order is lifted.

The U of L is making arrangements to bring additional bottled water on campus and is taking safety precautions for the duration of this Boil Water Order period. According to the City of Lethbridge, this Order is in effect until further notice and is expected to last several days.

Drinking Water

During the Boil Water Order, students, staff and faculty should not drink water from the fountains or taps and are encouraged to drink boiled or bottled water while on campus. Students living in residence, who have access to a stove, need to follow the Boil Water Order, which is included in a link below.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is working with suppliers in an effort to ensure bottled water is available on campus during this situation. It is expected that a significant shipment will arrive Friday morning. Availability may be short in the interim though. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to bring their own water with them until the Boil Water Order is lifted.

Washrooms

Washroom facilities at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ are operational. Please do not consume water from the taps.

Food Services

Food Services will be open on campus. Some regular menu items may not be available as adjustments are made to ensure safety of patrons.

Health Services

The U of L’s Health Centre is aware of this situation. Typical illnesses from untreated water can include signs/symptoms of diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, and fever.

If you or someone you know is SEVERELY ill, please call 911 for an ambulance to transport them to the hospital.

If you are generally ill with symptoms that are manageable, please call the Health Centre at 403-329-2484 ext. 1 and ask to speak with a nurse about your symptoms. If the phone is not answered, please leave your name, phone number, and your symptoms to the confidential voice mail system. The Heath Centre will track illness due to this water event and will return your call to provide health advice on dealing with your illness.

Additional Safety Measures

Fire safety/suppression systems are unaffected.

Signage has been placed by water fountains, building entrances and in washrooms alerting the campus community and visitors not to drink the water. Additionally, information about the Boil Water Order, and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s activities related to it, is posted on the Notice Board, Digital Signage and U of L social media channels.

Grassfire now contained

A grassfire to the west of the city of Lethbridge that forced road closures as well as evacuations of some westside neighbourhoods has been contained.

Following are updates from the City of Lethbridge website. For more information on the fire and possible further evacuations and road closures, follow this link.

9:09 p.m.
Reception Centre made ready 'just in case' for west Lethbridge residents (Soccer Centre) is now being closed as fire is contained. Fritz Sick Centre remains open for County residents.

8:19 p.m.

The fire came across river before 3:30 p.m. today from the Westside Blood reserve area. The fire is contained and the City of Lethbridge is now containing hot spots. The City of Lethbridge is confident the fire is contained.

Westside residents have not been asked to evacuate. The City of Lethbridge is sending resources to blood reserve to work with their resources on the fire.

6:51 p.m.
Lethbridge Regional Police are advising the public that travel along westbound Whoop Up Drive as well as westbound and eastbound ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Drive is restricted. Unless it is absolutely necessary residents are advised to stay off these roads and remain indoors. Motorists who must travel along these roadways should expect delays. In addition, Highway 3 to West Lethbridge is currently closed by the RCMP.

6:40 p.m.
Whoop-Up West Bound is restricted to residents needing to get into the area. West bound Highway 3 is closed. Residents can still drive East Bound.

6:16 p.m.
Residents of Indian Battle Heights and West Highlands are asked to prepare for possible evacuation. Residents are asked to go to family and friend's houses or to the Soccer Centre at 2501 28th Ave South) as a reception centre.

Cell phone use is intermittent and residents are asked to use land lines where possible. Residents SHOULD NOT call 911 to ask for evacuation updates, but save that line for emergency calls. Current updates can be found on Facebook or Twitter or on our website.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ urges 'Be Fluless, Not Clueless'

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is urging students, staff and faculty to 'Be Fluless, Not Clueless' this fall as it deals with the spectre of Influenza A H1N1.

The campaign is designed to inform members of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community on how to first avoid getting the flu and then, should they become ill, what to do and where to go to seek treatment. The Influenza A H1N1 concern is real and the U of L is taking the situation very seriously as it looks to head off the virus. The latest information and advice, compiled in consultation with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Health Centre and Alberta Health Services, offers the best protection.

Sept. 2, 2009 UPDATE

Classes and activities at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge are operating as normal. We continue to monitor the H1N1 influenza situation and the directives set forth by Alberta Health Services. As this is a potentially serious situation and we value highly the health of our students, staff and faculty, representatives from throughout the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community will continue to meet regularly to assess any ongoing developments. Take these Everyday Steps to Protect Your Health

1) Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If no tissue is available, try to sneeze into clothing or the crook of your elbow.

2) Throw tissues carefully in the trash. Avoid public spitting of mucous and respiratory secretions.

3) Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. If your hands are not obviously soiled, hand sanitizer is a good second choice to clean hands.

4) Try to avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth frequently. Your hands may have touched something recently and germs spread quickly in the moist tissues of the face.

5) Perform extra cleaning of common surfaces at home or at school. Having cleansing wipes or hand sanitizer on hand is a good idea.

6) Prepare to stay home for a week or so should you become ill.

7) If you are sick with a flu-like illness, stay at home for at least 48 hours after your fever has subsided (except if you are in need of medical care). Try to protect the people you live with by staying separate from them, wearing a mask or extra cleaning.

Seeking Medical Care - What should I do if I get sick?

Call the Health Centre at 403-329-2484 BEFORE coming in with influenza symptoms.

Centre for Disease Control recommends:

If you become ill with influenza-type symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, nausea or vomiting, you should stay home (except to seek medical care) and avoid contact with other people.
CDC recommends staying home for at least 24 hours after your fever has subsided - typically this is 6 to 7 days after your initial symptoms. If you have taken an over-the counter medication to reduce your fever, you should wait 24 to 48 hours AFTER your fever is naturally gone with OTC meds.

If you have mild influenza-type symptoms, the typical course of the illness is 3 days of aches and pains, leading up to sore throat, cough and fever. On approximately the 4th day, the immune system begins to recognize the virus and begins the process of eliminating it. At this point, you should start feeling a little better. For mild cases, you would report your illness to your supervisor/professor/school and then return 24 to 48 hours after your fever has subsided. If you need to see a doctor, call the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Health Centre at 403-329-2484 to discuss your situation. Health Centre staff will ask you to use hand sanitizer and wear a mask before entering the Health Centre.

SEVERE SYMPTOMS

If you become ill and experience any of the following symptoms, call 911 or go to the Emergency Department of the nearest hospital.
These symptoms include:
• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

• Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen

• Sudden dizziness

• Confusion

• Severe or persistent vomiting

• Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worsening cough (worsening of symptoms).
