Hunter named CMA Distinguished Scholar

The Faculty of Management welcomed a representative of the Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of Alberta to campus recently to present an award to Dr. M. Gordon Hunter, FCMA, who has been designated the CMA Distinguished Scholar.

"I am very honoured to be named the first-ever CMA Alberta Distinguished Scholar," says Hunter. "I look forward to working with the CMA Alberta office to promote the CMA brand through academic intitiatives. Most importantly, for me, I am excited about continuing my work with students through information sessions and case competitions."

Hunter received his award from Kara Mitchelmore, CMA President and CEO.

"I'm honoured to present the CMA Distinguished Scholar Award to Dr. Hunter," says Mitchelmore. "He has been a strong advocate of the CMA designation, a pillar in the Lethbridge post-secondary community for a number of years and an outstanding member all around."

Mitchelmore also spoke to the gathering about the proposed merger among the national CMA, Chartered Accountants (CA) and Certified General Accountants (CGA) bodies. In Alberta, the CGA joined the provincial merger discussions with CMA Alberta and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA) last October. The unification would see all three associations granted the designation of Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA). Talks are in the preliminary stages at this time, with the expectation that a decision on whether or not to present members with a unification framework will be made later this year or by early 2012.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Management professor Dr. M. Gordon (Gord) Hunter was recently designated a Fellow of the Society of Management Accountants of Canada (FCMA).

The FCMA, presented to Hunter and five other Albertans, is a prestigious national honorary designation that is awarded to CMAs who, through their own outstanding achievements, bring distinction to the management accounting profession and serve as role models for others.

Hunter is the fourth
U of L faculty member to achieve this designation. Past recipients of the FCMA in the Faculty of Management include
Dr. Murray Lindsay, as well as instructors Bruce Thurston (Lethbridge campus) and Tim Spielman (Calgary campus).

Faculty of Management Dean, Dr. Robert Ellis, says that Hunter's dedication to research, teaching, and his association with CMA Alberta, allow him to continue providing relevant and student-centred learning opportunities.

"Gord has made exemplary contributions to scholarship, teaching and to the professional community," says Ellis. "I speak for all our faculty members when I say that we are very proud of Gord for being honoured by his peers in the Society of Management Accountants."

In his current role as a professor of information systems at the U of L, Hunter teaches several courses and, in 2009, developed a new accounting information systems course. He has been an advocate for the CMA designation in several capacities, including acting as a coach in the CMA Alberta Board Governance and JDC West Case competitions. He has also been a CMA
ambassador in the post-secondary community at CMA Alberta events.

Hunter has continually shown a commitment to enhancing the profession and designation through written publications; developing, delivering and overseeing a variety of post-secondary courses; and sitting on international conference committees.

CMA accreditation for Faculty of Management

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Bachelor of Management (Accounting) Program has been given the stamp of approval from the Canadian Management Accountants Society. And while CMA accreditation indicates a certain level of quality, it also grants students a fast track opportunity to hit the ground running after graduation.

"To pass CMA Canada's rigorous requirements speaks highly of the quality of our program, faculty and students," says Dr. Murray Lindsay, FCMA, Dean of the Faculty of Management. "Our students clearly benefit from our program's accreditation. Having more people trained in strategic management accounting also benefits the business community."

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Management (Accounting) Program with a minimum grade point average of 75 per cent are exempt from writing the CMA Entrance Examination.

This select group of students will enter directly into the Strategic Leadership Program, the final step required to obtain the CMA designation.

"The accreditation relationship between academic institutions and CMA Canada is based on a co-operative process that provides an opportunity to meet the expectations of all stakeholders: students, employers, the management accounting profession and the government," says David Shaw, CMA, President and Chief Executive Officer of CMA Alberta.

"In addition, the CMA accreditation program enhances the stature and recognition of academic institutions, thus making them attractive to students with many competitive choices."

The CMA accreditation is for a five-year period. Thomas emphasized that CMA Canada accreditation of programs at leading academic institutions sets the standard for quality education in business and accounting in Canada.

"The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge exemplifies this standard and is to be commended for the outstanding quality of its instruction and its graduates," Thomas says.

U of L competes at CMA event

CALGARY, AB – Five business students from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge competed in Certified Management Accountants (CMA) Alberta's first-ever Board Governance Competition, Mar. 5-6, in Calgary.

The students analyzed a governance case, based on a fictitious not-for-profit company, and presented their recommendations to a judging panel of esteemed Alberta business leaders which included: Jim Dinning, Chair Federal Export Development Corporation, Randy Garvey, FCMA, Executive VP, Corporate Support, Canadian Western Bank, Geeta Tucker, FCMA, CFO, Agriteam Canada Consulting Ltd., and Chris Good, CMA, CFO & General Manager, Corporate Services, City of Calgary.

CMA Alberta created the Board Governance Competition to give post-secondary students a practical understanding of board governance and the important role it plays in an organization. The competition also included a Board Governance 101 workshop led by Dr. Chris Bart, founder, principal and lead professor of The Directors College and a leading board governance expert. Bart's presentation focused on governance fundamentals and the importance of maintaining a positive relationship between management and a board of directors.

"Business students have been kept in the dark for too long about the workings of boards and how directors should effectively govern their organizations and CEOs," says Bart. "Since many grads are likely to sit on a not-for-profit board early in their careers, the competition provided an exceptional opportunity to expand their knowledge and business acumen."

The students had seven hours to develop their case and put together a presentation to deliver to the judging panel. Twelve teams participated in the competition, with the top three teams going to the final round. The U of L team failed to place in the top three. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta took home the grand prize of $10,000; Mount Royal College placed second and received $5,000; and MacEwan College placed third and received $2,000.

"The calibre of the presentations was exceptionally impressive," says Joan Bedard, Director of Member Services and Events for CMA Alberta. "The competition was intense, but each team rose to the challenge and presented a professional, well-delivered case analysis to the judging panel."
