Williams, Duce earn Horns awards

Erica Williams and Morgan Duce were named Subway Pronghorns Athletes of the Week after strong efforts over the weekend as Canada West play resumed on a variety of fronts.

Williams, who plays for the Horns women's hockey team, kickstarted a Pronghorn rally that salvaged a point against ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan. With the 'Horns down 3-0 heading into the third period Saturday night, the second-year forward helped to force overtime by scoring two goals. The 'Horns went on to drop a 4-3 decision in overtime but earned a valuable point in the tight Canada West standings.

On the season, Williams has already surpassed her freshman totals from last year and is sixth on the 'Horns in scoring with 3 goals and 4 assists.

In men's basketball play, college transfer Morgan Duce kicked off the second half of the season in style. Duce scored a combined 33 points over the 'Horns' two-game swing in BC and scored well over his season average in both contests.

Friday night, Duce scored 16 points in the 'Horns' loss to the Trinity Western Spartans. He was tied for the team high with Daryl Cooper and hit on 5-of-9 shots from the field.

The next night, in the 'Horns' victory over the CIS 9th ranked Fraser Valley Cascades, Duce scored 17 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. He was again 5-of-9 from the field and 4-of-7 from behind the three point line.

On the season, Duce sits third on the 'Horns scoring list, averaging 9.8 points per game.

Silver lining to China trip

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's hockey players Ryan Pottruff and Dustin Moore captured silver medals for Canada as the 2009 Winter Universiade concluded in Harbin, China this past weekend.

Pottruff, a second-year defenceman from Woodstock, Ont., and Moore, a second-year forward out of Red Deer, were part of the Canada West all-star squad that was chosen to wear Canadian colours at the Universiade. The Canadian squad advanced to the gold medal game after sweeping through the round robin portion of the event with a perfect 4-0 record and then thumping Slovakia 8-1 in Friday's semifinal game.

In Saturday's final, Canada fell behind 2-1 to unbeaten Russia after 20 minutes. A scoreless second period was followed by Canada's tying goal early in the third period. Russia eventually earned the win with a pair of goals 46 seconds apart in the game's final three minutes.

Both Pottruff and Moore return to Lethbridge this week to rejoin their Pronghorn teammates as they prepare to host the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of British Columbia Thunderbirds in the first round of the Canada West playoffs. The best-of-three series is set for this weekend, Mar. 6-8 at Nicholas Sheran Arena. All three games of the series, if necessary, are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Hornquist, Feakes players of the week

Women's basketball player Sam Hornquist captured the Pronghorn Female Athlete of the Week award after helping the Horns to a weekend split in Canada West women's basketball play.

Hornquist, a first-year guard from Fernie, B.C., led the way offensively for the Horns as they headed west for a pair of road games against Pacific division teams.

In Friday's 80-69 upset of the 2008 CIS Champion UBC Thunderbirds, Hornquist scored 10 points and grabbed three rebounds. She also collected three assists and added two steals. She followed that up with a 15-point effort in a 78-51 loss to the CIS sixth-ranked Victoria Vikes on Saturday.

The Pronghorn Male Athlete of the Week is Tyler Feakes of the Pronghorns men's hockey team.

Feakes, a second-year forward from Spruce Grove, Alta., was one of the lone bright spots as the UBC Thunderbirds swept the Horns in Vancouver. In the club's 5-4 loss Friday night, Feakes scored two goals and recorded four shots on net, while finishing with a plus-one rating. He then was credited with five of the Horns' 37 shots on Saturday night, posting an even rating, as the U of L was beaten 4-1.
