Hockey Horns earn awards

Shelby Ballendine secured a little piece of history and may have also saved the season for the Pronghorns women's hockey team.

Both she and Cass Mappin, of the Horns men's hockey team, were named Subway Pronghorn Athletes of the Week after their teams picked up weekend splits against ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Regina Cougars.

Ballendine and the Horns were facing a weekend sweep at the hands of the Cougars before she scored Saturday's game-tying goal with just seven seconds to play in the third period. She then netted the game-winning shootout goal that secured a vital two points for the Horns and put them three points clear of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Manitoba Bisons for the final Canada West playoff spot. The Bisons cap their season this weekend with two games against conference leading ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calary, needing a sweep to overtake the idle Horns.

Ballendine also made history, moving into a tie atop the Horns' all-time scoring list with 73 points in 118 career Canada West games.

Mappin, a first-year forward, was instrumental in helping the Horns men's team bury the Cougars and near a clinch of their own Canada West playoff berth. He scored and added an assist in Friday night's loss to Regina, then netted a key insurance goal in Saturday's win, keeping the Horns five points ahead of the Cougars for the final playoff spot. Regina plays four games to the Horns' two to close out the regular season.

Mappin is fourth in Canada West rookie scoring with seven goals and nine assists.

Horns hockey opens home schedule

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's and women's hockey teams open their Canada West home schedules this weekend and both will be looking to get into the win column.

The Horns men's hockey team hits the ice first, opening its home schedule Thursday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena with a 7 p.m. start against the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary Dinos. The club was swept in a weekend series in Manitoba to open the regular season, dropping 3-2 and 4-0 decisions to the Manitoba Bisons.

Goaltender Scott Bowles leads the way for the Horns and despite losing both games over the past weekend, still earned honours as Subway Pronghorn Male Athlete of the Week.

Bowles made 36 saves in both games against the Bisons but couldn't find any offensive support from his teammates.

Thursday night's game is the first of four with the Dinos this season and the front end of a home-and-home weekend series. The clubs will also play Saturday night in Calgary.

The Pronghorns women's team is also coming off a pair of losses to open the regular season as they dropped a series to the 10th-ranked ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan Huskies.

Horns will open their home schedule with games Friday and Saturday nights, 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran. The Regina Cougars will provide the opposition.

Vanessa Fusick, a first-year forward, was named Subway Pronghorn Female Athlete of the Week after her first weekend of conference play. She picked up her first career Canada West goal against the Huskies.
