Professional development conference geared to students

Faculty of Management students will get a head start on their professional development by hearing from top-notch speakers during a two-day conference Thursday and Friday at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

In addition to attending a networking dinner on Thursday evening with Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey, co-founders of Barefoot Cellars, students will have a full day of sessions Friday.

“We host this conference and other professional development events to provide our students with opportunities to hear from and interact with leaders in business and management,” says Bob Ellis, dean of the Faculty of Management. “These opportunities are invaluable and give our students an edge both personally and professionally.”

The day begins with a keynote speech from Stuart Knight, a graduate of the School of Business and Economics at Wilfrid Laurier ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Now an entrepreneur, author, producer and motivational speaker, Knight will talk about the ‘Four Conversations for Success’ that inspire people to change the conversations in their mind so that they can overcome challenges.

In Session 1, Mark Slomp, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Counselling Services manager, presents ‘The High Five of Career Development – Putting the YOU into your career.’ In Session 2, Greg Stonehocker, a local ActionCOACH, will talk about personal brand management.

The day closes with a public talk by Bob Garner, an entrepreneur who took a dream and turned it into reality. Garner created two successful companies and achieved financial security before the age of 40. Garner will deliver a unique presentation that combines useful information with amazing demonstrations of mind reading and humour. Garner speaks from 3 to 4:15 p.m. Friday in the Students’ Union Ballroom. Anyone interested in attending is asked to register at the Faculty of Management website.

Scholarship dinner to honour Allen

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Faculty of Management will celebrate its 25th anniversary, in the U of L's 45th year, by honouring a man who has devoted his life to his family, career and the community.

The Faculty will honour Del Allen, the founder of D.A. Electric and a well-known community volunteer, entrepreneur, supporter of post-secondary education, sport and youth programming in the city, at its Thursday, Apr. 5 Management Scholarship Dinner. Proceeds from the event will support the Del Allen Scholarship.

Allen established D.A. Electric with his brother Don in 1975 and it quickly grew into a successful regional enterprise. His son Doug now manages the daily affairs of the business. The success of D.A. Electric, combined with Allen's values and sense of community, have allowed him to support and help provide direction for many local groups, including the Boys and Girls Club of Lethbridge and District, Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Lethbridge Construction Association, the Interfaith Food Bank and numerous sports organizations.

Allen has also generously supported further education through donations to post-secondary institutions, including funding for ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge athletics and academic scholarships, and a sizeable financial commitment to the library in 1995.

Allen was also a member of the Lethbridge College Wind Turbine Advisory Committee, helping the College develop its wind generation program. In addition, he made a major donation toward the construction of the Trades Building on the college campus.

While Allen's business has wired a massive number of homes, businesses and industrial projects over the years, one of his brightest ideas, and most visually spectacular projects, was the lighting of the High Level Bridge in September 2009 during its centennial celebrations. He also helped bring the illuminated Christmas Train for a stop on the bridge that December. Allen and D.A. Electric most fittingly won the Spirit of Lethbridge Award that year.

Runte, Amies earn YWCA honour

A current ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge faculty member, as well as a graduate and former employee are among the people selected by the YWCA as 2012 Women of Distinction.

Dr. Mary Runte (Faculty of Management) and Sarah Amies (BA '88 with Distinction), currently the program director of Lethbridge Family Services – Immigrant Services will receive their YWCA Women of Distinction Awards on Friday, Mar. 23 along with entrepreneur Vicky Vannatta Miller, lawyer and community volunteer Berga Moen and 87-year-old Edith M. Stewart, this year's "Wise Woman of Distinction."

The YWCA Women of Distinction Awards recognize outstanding women who live and work in southern Alberta.

Through a competitive process, the honourees are chosen from a group of nominations. The awards are based on the candidate's accomplishments, commitment and leadership. The Women of Distinction Awards Ceremony is a wonderful venue to showcase the talent and leadership of women in southern Alberta. Women honoured have been trailblazers, entrepreneurs, innovators, social advocates and volunteers.

Sarah Amies: Woman of Distinction in the Social Advocate category

Sarah Amies emigrated from the UK to Canada in 1974. She attended the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and graduated in 1988 with a B.A. (Distinction) in Anthropology. She was the co-ordinator of the Applied Studies program at the U of L for nine years and a Student Program Advisor for five years.

In January 2001, Amies became the program director of Lethbridge Family Services – Immigrant Services. She is closely involved with the settlement and integration of new immigrants planning a make a life in Lethbridge, focusing especially on the empowerment and advancement of women with disadvantages. Under her leadership, Immigrant Services has expanded programming and services significantly, growing from a staff of three to 22 at present.

Amies has chaired the Alberta Association of Immigrant Serving Agencies' Communications committee and has well established business and community networks, particularly in the in area of developing and executing innovative community partnerships and collaborations.

She has extensive volunteer service including: Vibrant Lethbridge, Volunteer Lethbridge, Alberta Network of Immigrant Women, National Settlement Modernization Advisory Group, Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination, Family Violence and Elder Abuse Awareness and Prevention Committee and the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association.

Mary Runte: Woman of Distinction in the Spirit of Women category

Mary Runte has a PhD in Management from St. Mary's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and an MBA from York ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. She is an associate professor of strategy and the director of social responsibility in the Faculty of Management at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Previously, Runte worked with a variety of nonprofit organizations, including Eastside Young Moms and the Society of Special Needs Adoptive Parents. Gender inequity, work-family balance, social responsibility and business ethics are her particular areas of interest and research, having numerous publications and having received major research grants to study these issues.

Runte was honoured as distinguished speaker for the Work-Life Conference at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Ochanamizu, Tokyo, Japan in 2007. She is the founding Division Chair for the Social Responsibility Interest Group of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada.

Her tireless support of her students, especially female students in non-traditional fields, and her one-on-one mentoring throughout their academic careers is done on a volunteer basis. She is an incredible role model for students and colleagues alike as she advocates ceaselessly for ethical and principled business behaviour.

The Women of Distinction Awards Ceremony will take place on Friday, March 23 starting at 5 p.m. at the Lethbridge Lodge. The guest speaker is Leela Gilday, aboriginal singer/songwriter and a winner at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards.

"Social responsibility is such a big part of what we do in the Faculty of Management, so couple that with his incredible success in the business field and it was a perfect match."

Wilson made millions but success was not without consequence, and in the process he lost his marriage and nearly lost his life. As a result, he radically shifted his priorities to focus on his three children and sharing the wealth he has accrued.

"People often ask me about the key to my success and what I hope they hear is that success requires a balance – a balance of priorities combined with passion," says Wilson on his website www.wbrettwilson.ca. "Fallout from divorce and a battle with advanced prostate cancer forced me to reprioritize my life – for the better."

Wilson is now incredibly active in the charitable community, having given, and engaged others to give, tens of millions of dollars to non-profit initiatives. He often takes a hands-on approach to philanthropy, including shaving his head to support Kids Cancer Care and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to support Alzheimer's research. He has also made annual trips with Youth With a Mission to Mexico to build homes with his family.

"There is a way for people to be extremely successful financially but also be able to give back to their community, both in dollars and in time," says Craig. "That's one of the great things about Brett, he obviously gives of his time as well as his money."

Craig, who regularly watches Dragons' Den, says the show can serve as a valuable resource for business students.

"With our students, we're always trying to teach them how to be creative, how to be critical thinkers, how to analyze situations and that's one of the things that's great about that program," says Craig. "With any potential entrepreneur that you turn out of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, when approaching a financier you want them to have the ability to ask themselves, 'Is this worth the money I'm asking for and have I done my due diligence?' The show takes you through that process and it's a great learning tool."

He's been dubbed the 'Dragon with a heart' and is one of Canada's most successful, and philanthropic, business entrepreneurs. On Wednesday, Mar. 31, Brett Wilson will be on campus as this year's guest speaker for the annual CMA Alberta Leadership & Innovation Speaker Series that is organized and hosted by the Faculty of Management.

Dragon's Den Wilson coming to campus

Brett Wilson, entrepreneur, philanthropist and one of the stars of the popular CBC series Dragon's Den will speak to an audience at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge on Wednesday, Mar. 31, in the Students' Union Ballroom as part of the CMA Alberta Leadership and Speaker Series.

Wilson has built a formidable reputation in the world of business, garnering such honours as Canada's Top 40 Under 40, Alberta Venture Magazine's Business Person of the Year and the Management Alumni Excellence Award from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business.

He co-founded the investment banking advisory firm, Wilson Mackie and Co. in 1991 and in 1993 co-founded FirstEnergy Capital Corp., a leading Canadian stock brokerage firm providing services in the energy sector. He now makes most of his investments through his primary holding company, Prairie Merchant Corporation.

Wilson's charitable endeavours are also noteworthy and include support of research into prostate cancer, Alzheimer's and domestic abuse. He established the Wilson Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan and journeys annually to Mexico with Youth With a Mission to build homes with his family.
