Scholarship dinner to honour Allen

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Faculty of Management will celebrate its 25th anniversary, in the U of L's 45th year, by honouring a man who has devoted his life to his family, career and the community.

The Faculty will honour Del Allen, the founder of D.A. Electric and a well-known community volunteer, entrepreneur, supporter of post-secondary education, sport and youth programming in the city, at its Thursday, Apr. 5 Management Scholarship Dinner. Proceeds from the event will support the Del Allen Scholarship.

Allen established D.A. Electric with his brother Don in 1975 and it quickly grew into a successful regional enterprise. His son Doug now manages the daily affairs of the business. The success of D.A. Electric, combined with Allen's values and sense of community, have allowed him to support and help provide direction for many local groups, including the Boys and Girls Club of Lethbridge and District, Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Lethbridge Construction Association, the Interfaith Food Bank and numerous sports organizations.

Allen has also generously supported further education through donations to post-secondary institutions, including funding for ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge athletics and academic scholarships, and a sizeable financial commitment to the library in 1995.

Allen was also a member of the Lethbridge College Wind Turbine Advisory Committee, helping the College develop its wind generation program. In addition, he made a major donation toward the construction of the Trades Building on the college campus.

While Allen's business has wired a massive number of homes, businesses and industrial projects over the years, one of his brightest ideas, and most visually spectacular projects, was the lighting of the High Level Bridge in September 2009 during its centennial celebrations. He also helped bring the illuminated Christmas Train for a stop on the bridge that December. Allen and D.A. Electric most fittingly won the Spirit of Lethbridge Award that year.

Small Business Institute set to launch

Small businesses can be big business for southern Alberta – that's the message two ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Management researchers are sending as they launch a new institute that will focus on the specific needs of small businesses.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the U of L and its Faculty of Management will officially launch the Small Business Institute (SBI), the brainchild of Dr. Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff, two management faculty members with several decades of experience in small business consulting, management and education between them.

The focus of the institute's work will be on privately held small businesses, varying from start-up operations to multi-generational ownership. In addition to entrepreneurship and family-owned businesses, other aspects of their research will include franchises, non-participating family members, succession and sustainability. The SBI is unique in that it will focus primarily on Lethbridge and southern Alberta businesses.

Both Hunter and Kazakoff expect a significant student benefit through the exchange of ideas with business people and faculty. In addition, new courses may be developed or existing courses modified to incorporate ideas that come out of the SBI research process.

The launch event and a brief presentation about the SBI takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 17, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in AH100 (Andy's Place). An advisory council is currently being organized that will provide guidance to Kazakoff and Hunter with regard to the Institute's direction. Information about the advisory council will be presented at that time.

Clint Dunford to headline Management dinner

Clint Dunford, a well-known Lethbridge resident, former MLA and political advocate for southern Alberta, will be recognized for his community contributions at the upcoming ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Management Scholarship Dinner. The 24th annual event will take place Friday, Mar. 11 at the Coast Plaza Hotel in Lethbridge.

"In the community, in education, in business and in his personal life, Clint has made a lasting impact on the people and organizations he's been dedicated to serving," says Dr. Bob Ellis, dean of the Faculty of Management. "We look forward to celebrating his success with the community."

Proceeds from the evening will be used to establish the Clint Dunford Scholarship, available to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Management.

Management Scholarship Dinner to honour North

Lethbridge-based lawyer, R. Philip (Phil) M. North, Q.C., a principal in the firm North & Company LLP, is the Faculty of Management's 2010 Scholarship Dinner honoree. The event takes place Friday, March 12, 2010 at the Lethbridge Lodge. Tickets and tables of eight are available by calling 403-329-5181.

A Lethbridge resident for more than 35 years, Phil North has served the legal profession extensively at a local, provincial and national level, including roles as Chairman of the Alberta Law Foundation, Chair of the Legal Education Society of Alberta, and President of the Lethbridge Bar Association. In recognition of his many contributions, Phil received the Distinguished Service Award from the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association, Alberta Branch.

He has given generously to his community in leadership roles as President of the Lethbridge Rotary Club, Chair of the Lions Eye Bank (Alberta) Society, President of the Lethbridge Community Foundation, and Director of the Community Foundations of Canada. He has also been active in the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Lethbridge Minor Hockey Association, Lethbridge Easter Seal Telethon and the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise, Lethbridge Chapter.

Aside from frequently attending events in celebration and support of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Phil has served as Chairman of the Board of Governors (1978-1984) and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2004.

Phil was born and raised in Deloraine, Manitoba and attended Brandon College (now Brandon ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ). In 1971 he completed his law degree at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Manitoba and moved to Lethbridge in 1973. He assisted in establishing the Blairmore and Pincher Creek branch offices of North and Company and is now the managing partner of the firm.

He and his wife Freda have three children and five grandchildren. His outside interests include hockey and gardening.

Sendas to be honoured at Management dinner

If, in the first two minutes of discussing the sport of judo, the name of Dr. Yosh Senda is not uttered, then the conversation is truly lacking in depth.

Simply stated, Senda and judo are synonymous and fully complementary. To discuss one without the other does a disservice to both. For that, Senda has been recognized time and again for his invaluable contribution to the growth of the ancient, time-honoured sport. He, along with his wife Florence, will once again take centre stage next month as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Faculty of Management pays tribute to Senda at the 22nd Annual Scholarship Fundraising Dinner.

Scheduled for Friday, Mar. 13 at the Lethbridge Lodge Hotel, the Faculty will recognize the contributions of Senda to the sport of judo; honouring a man who has devoted 75-plus years to the noble pursuit.

"Dr. Senda has dedicated his life to building the sport of judo in Lethbridge," says Chris Spearman in nominating Senda as an honouree. "He instills in his students that judo is more than just a physical exercise for the body – judo is a way of life. He takes pride when his students do well in competition; his only requirement is that his students try their very best and never give up hope."

Senda has represented the sport in several capacities, coaching all the way up to the Olympic level. Achieving glory and fame however, is the farthest thing from his mind. In fact it is ironic that a man so soft-spoken, so humble and dedicated to being a volunteer, would elicit so much attention.

Named to the Order of Canada in 2008, the country's highest civilian honour, Senda's list of awards and hall of fame dedications is awe inspiring. Through it all, he simply sees himself as a "judo boy", supported ably by Florence, herself a third degree black belt.

Without Senda, the sport of judo would not hold such a prominent place in the local, provincial and national sporting scene, nor would the U of L have a judo exchange program that continues today to allow judo students an opportunity to travel to Japan and return with lifelong memories.

It promises to be a special night, and one well deserved, as the Faculty of Management celebrates both Yosh and Florence Senda and their contributions to the sporting community.
