Education begins with respect

A year after opening a dialogue on diversity and respect, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty Association's Gender, Equity and Diversity Caucus is looking to build upon that momentum with the 2nd Annual Respect & Diversity Awareness Week.

Running Mar. 5-9 at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, this year's theme for the weeklong conversation is "Respect and learning go hand in hand".

"Last year was great for an inaugural event," says Dr. Carly Adams, Chair of the Gender, Equity and Diversity Caucus. "We thought how it was taken up by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community was wonderful. It's a conversation that needs to be ongoing."

Events such as a Talking About Teaching panel discussion through the Centre for the Advancement of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CAETL) spurred the campus community into thinking about how we interact with one another, in classrooms, meeting rooms and even as we walk through the hallways.

"As a faculty member who attended these talks, I thought about the issues raised and then took them into my classroom," says Adams. "I hope that others took the things they heard and tried to adapt new strategies in the ways they dealt with students or fellow faculty."

If anything, the week created an environment where issues of inclusion and respect can be discussed. It also established an awareness of the caucus and took its work to another level. In early February, the caucus played a role in the Discover Diversity conference hosted by the City of Lethbridge and co-sponsored by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

"I was really pleased we were able to be a part of that because not only did we have an opportunity to talk about the caucus but also the respect and diversity week and some of the other initiatives we're involved in," says Adams. "It led to an even wider discussion about workplace diversity and respect beyond our campus."

This year's awareness week will feature a few new additions, including an Ignite! event on Wednesday, Mar. 7 at 5 p.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Library (10th floor). Described as a fun, informative, rapid-fire session, participants are tasked to speak to 20 pictures or slides of their choice, all in a five-minute window of time, as they wax eloquent about diversity and/or gender.

"We're really excited about this event," says Adams. "We have a number of faculty lined up to take part, as well as people from the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG) and the Students' Union. In total it's about 12 to 15 people, and it should create a really lively discussion from all the different perspectives across campus."

The line up of speakers includes Dr. Kevin McGeough (Geography), Yale Belanger (Native American Studies), Dan Johnson (Environmental Science), Carol Williams (Women and Gender Studies), Phil Jones (CAETL/Health Sciences), Marinus Swanepoel (Library), LPRIG, Shelia McManus (History), Rob Sutherland (CCBN/ULFA) and Tanya Harnett (Native American Studies/Fine Arts).

Other events for the week include a film screening of MissRepresentation, a documentary exploring how the media's misrepresentation of women has led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. The Gender, Equity, and Diversity Caucus is joining the YWCA, Womanspace, Campus Women's Centre and LPIRG in sponsoring the film screening that takes place Thursday, Mar. 8 at 7 p.m. in Galileo's Gallery and coincides with International Women's Day.

On Friday, Mar. 9, Craig Milner from the Faculty of Management will present Student Diversity Rocks: Developing High Performance Teams in the Classroom (1 p.m., M1040).

"He's discussing diversity in teams, and how we might leverage some of the different experiences of our students in the classroom to create different conversations in groups," says Adams of the one-hour workshop.
While the week concludes with Milner's presentation, the conversation does not, and will be picked up a week later when the Department of Women & Gender Studies, with assistance from Adams' group, will present Why Women and Gender Studies? A Multigenerational Roundtable and Conversation, Friday, Mar. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballroom.

"Last year, we came away thinking it was a very positive week and worth continuing," says Adams. "We invite everyone to come out for these events and I hope that this will give these important issues even more exposure."

Concert, film on tap Thursday night

A pair of events highlights happenings at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge on Thursday, Oct. 14.

The curtain is rising on a new at the U of L with the installation of President Dr. Mike Mahon. In honour of the occasion (occurring officially on Friday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.), the Faculty Artists & Friends Series presents President's Choice, on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Recital Hall.

This is one of two concerts the Music Department has planned to honour the incoming president. President's Choice showcases the music faculty artists.

"In preparation for the concert, we asked the President to name his favourite classical music composers. He chose Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi, which is where we got the concert title from," says Dr. Deanna Oye, Faculty Artists & Friends co-ordinator. "The concert features works by these composers and others that highlight what our faculty does best."

As well, filmgoers have the opportunity for a free night out as the U of L's Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG) is screening the film, Gasland, in Galileo's Gallery (second floor, Students' Union building).

Described as a witty and frightening investigation into natural gas extraction in the United States, Gasland begins showing at 7 p.m. and admission is free to everyone.

Discussing harmful effects of the sex trade

Breaking down the sex trade and its harmful effects on a marginalized population of sex workers is the focus of a Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group presentation Tuesday night.

Fourth-year nursing student, Chantelle Fitton, will present, Sex Work and Society, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14 in Galileo's Gallery. This free-admission event is open to everyone.

Synopsis

This summer I had the opportunity to attend a conference in Las Vegas entitled Sex, Power and Politics, funded by LPIRG and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union. It centered on the sex trade in Canada and the U.S., with a focus on current legislation and the implications for sex workers, as well as activism and harm reduction strategies.

I went with the intention to learn about harm reduction strategies, as I am a fourth-year nursing student, preparing to enter the world of community health nursing. I left with an entirely different view of the sex trade in general, and with anger over the violence, mistreatment, and blatant disregard for basic human rights that is allowed against this segment of our population.

I will present what I learned from the many sex workers and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ who spoke at the conference about the moral-based policies that shape our current views and treatment of sex workers, as well as some realistic harm reduction and outreach approaches that can be effective to truly pave the way for empowerment and agency.

LPIRG invites public to AGM

The Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG) will hold its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, Apr. 13 at 7 p.m. in Galileo's Gallery.

All ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge undergraduates who have not had their LPIRG fee reimbursed are members of LPIRG, have voting privileges and are invited to attend. All members of the public are also welcome to attend.

On the agenda for this year's AGM will be: a presentation of the annual report and financial statement; LPIRG grant recipient presentations; a short discussion of LPIRG projects; entertainment and refreshments.

The LPIRG board of directors will consider additions to the AGM agenda of any other matters concerning LPIRG's activities provided that the matter is brought, in writing, to the attention of the board for consideration at least seven days prior to the AGM.

LPIRG is a student-funded, student-directed, non-profit organization providing resources for students to engage with environmental and social justice issues. LPIRG provides funding for undergraduate research, projects, events, and working groups in the public interest. LPIRG also facilitates opportunities for skills development through educational events, public campaigns and partnerships with community organizations.

Cinema Politica film tonight in Galileo's

The Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group is screening the film, Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai, Tuesday night, 7 p.m. in Galileo's Gallery.

Everyone is welcome to attend this free event, a part of the Cinema Politica documentary film series, screening every Tuesday in Galileo's.

Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai is a 79-minute film that tells the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights, and defend democracy; a movement for which this charismatic woman became an iconic inspiration.

FULL SYNOPSIS

Planting trees for fuel, shade, and food is not something that anyone would imagine as the first step toward winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet with that simple act Wangari Maathai, a woman born in rural Kenya, started down the path that reclaimed her country's land from 100 years of deforestation, provided new sources of food and income to rural communities, gave previously impoverished and powerless women a vital political role in their country, and ultimately helped to bring down Kenya's twenty-four-year dictatorship.

Taking Root weaves a compelling and dramatic narrative of one woman's personal journey in the context of the turbulent political and environmental history of her country. Raised in the rural highlands of Kenya, educated in the United States during the 1960s civil rights era, and the first female to receive a PhD in East Africa, Maathai discovered the heart of her life's work by reconnecting with the rural women with whom she had grown up. They told her that their daily lives had become intolerable: they were walking longer distances for firewood, clean water had become scarce, the soil was disappearing from their fields, and their children were suffering from malnutrition. Maathai thought to herself, "Well, why not plant trees?" Trees provide shade, prevent soil erosion, supply firewood and building materials, and produce nutritious fruit to combat malnutrition. With this realization Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, a grassroots organization encouraging rural women to plant trees.

East Africa the focus of SACPA event

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will host a special edition of the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs (SACPA) presentation Wednesday evening in Galileo's Gallery.

Speaker Justin Odera will present International Repercussions of the Eco-crises: East Africa, 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Galileo's.

The UN FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) projects that the greatest number of people in history will be starving this year, with over 1 billion going to bed hungry. In Eastern Africa, this reality is exacerbated by persistent drought.

In a world threatened by simultaneous economic and ecological crises, thousands of billions of dollars are made available on short notice for banks and financiers. Should the poorest of the poor suffer even more because of financial profligacy of the moneyed elite?

Odera will talk about the plight of his Acholi people in the Sudan, displaced by civil war and now coming home after 15 years from the Kenyan and Ugandan refugee camps to face hunger, and a void in education and medical care. Justin will also speak about those of his people who have come to Alberta and how they are faring in this time of crisis.

Odera was born in 1973, during a period of civil war. His Acholi family hometown was Pajok in the Magwi district, eastern Equatoria province, Southern Sudan. He lived through 29 brutal war years as well as the fragile life in refugee camps, before arriving in Canada in 2001.

The Acholi people have been living along the shores of East Africa's rivers and lakes for the past six centuries. The traditional territories of his Luo speaking tribe are the borderlands of western Uganda, northwestern Kenya and Sudan's Eastern Equatoria province.

Odera is the Program Director of Southern Sudan Canada Acholi Progressive Education Association (SSCAPEA), an Alberta based, non-profit organization dedicated to health, education, economic aid and community development amongst war weary families hailing from the refugee camps of East Africa.

Cinema Politica film tonight in Galileo's

The Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG) and the Campus Roots Cooperative Garden will host a screening of the film, The Garden, tonight, 7 p.m. in Galileo's Gallery.

Everyone is welcome to attend this free screening of the Scott Hamilton Kennedy film that explores the creation of the 14-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles, the largest of its kind in the United States.

Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country's most blighted neighbourhoods. Growing their own food, feeding their families and creating a community, the garden is much more than a simple green space.

Now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis.

The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of city hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, the film watches them organize, fight back and demand answers.

Why was the land sold to a wealthy developer for millions less than fair-market value?

Why was the transaction done in a closed-door session of the LA City Council?

Why has it never been made public?

This film screening is part of the Cinema Politica film series, shown every Tuesday in Galileo's.

Amnesty International's Neve highlights Global Justice Week

Battling for human rights has been a lifelong commitment for Amnesty International's Alex Neve. The insight he's gained from being on the front lines of that battle will form the basis of the lecture he'll deliver to a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge audience during Global Justice Week, Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.

Neve will cap the week with his lecture, Economic Insecurity, National Insecurity: Don't Lose Sight of Human Rights. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Students' Union (ULSU), in collaboration with the Graduate Students' Association (GSA) and Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG), is hosting the three-day event. Neve's talk is Friday, Oct. 2, 7 p.m. in PE250.

"The purpose is to raise awareness of the fact that we live in an unjust world," says Alex Massé, ULSU VP Academic and organizer of the event. "It's so students living here, in the richest part of the world, don't take their position for granted."

Within the last year, economic uncertainty has been on the minds of many, from governments to average citizens. Neve, the Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada since 2000 and member of the organization since 1985, says that can't take away our focus from human rights.

"The message I want to convey is that we live in insecure times," Neve says. "We live in times of economic insecurity, especially in the last year."

Because of this, human rights often get pushed to the back burner in times of economic distress. Amnesty International is trying to put human rights back into the forefront.

Neve, who holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, a Bachelor of Laws Degree and a Master of Law Degree in International Human Rights Law, believes that security of any sort should be grounded in human rights.

Amnesty International has long advocated for fair trials to ensure justice, the proper handling of prisoners in Afghanistan, as well as improvements to Immigration Security Certificates (a legal mechanism used by the Government of Canada to detain and deport non-citizens). According to Neve, there are currently five Security Certificate cases in Canada in which Amnesty International is involved in various ways.

On the economic front, Amnesty International launched the "Demand Dignity" campaign, which looks at human rights violations that lead to and deepen poverty. This is a worldwide campaign that was launched in May. Neve explains that we don't often look at human rights in terms of poverty.

Amnesty International also highlights the plight of Indigenous people in Canada, particularly with regard to women's issues and the role of the economy in deepening poverty.

While Neve's presentation highlights Global Justice Week, a variety of other events will be taking place, including a talk by Joshua Key, author of The Deserter's Tale: The Story of an Ordinary Soldier Who Walked Away From the War in Iraq.

Events begin Wednesday afternoon as U of L professors take the podium at Galileo's Gallery, beginning at 3 p.m. Dr. Kent Peacock of the Philosophy Department presents, Justice in a Hungry World; Dr. Patrick Wilson of the Anthropology Department presents, Fair Trade and Global Economic Injustice: Opportunities and Obstacles; and Bruce MacKay of Liberal Education presents, Genocide: Never Again or Always.
