Agricultural research at the heart of new collaboration between ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and county partners

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has partnered with Lethbridge County, the St. Mary River Irrigation District (SMRID) and the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District (LNID) to conduct research into local agricultural priorities.

The funding, $50,000 per year, will support five ULethbridge researchers over four years.

“This research partnership, thanks in large part to the efforts of Professor Emeritus Dr. Jim Byrne, will provide information and results that are extremely relevant to our area,” says Dr. Dena McMartin, vice-president of research. “By helping to identify opportunities to improve efficiency in agricultural operations, evaluating and advising on the viability of new crops and improving soil health, these projects will contribute to a more robust and sustainable agriculture sector.”

Lethbridge County contains more than 297,000 irrigated acres, allowing local farmers to produce a multitude of crops. The County is also home to rich pasture and grazing lands which serve livestock industries such as feedlots, dairies, and meatpacking and poultry processing facilities.

“LNID shares an interest in supporting local researchers who can answer local questions applicable to stewardship of water within irrigated southern Alberta,” says Chris Gallagher, LNID general manager. “LNID recognized the value of partnering with Lethbridge County and SMRID to support ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge research projects that target our mutual interests and that of our constituents/irrigators. Having input into the selection of project areas of study, and some of the research questions to be answered, gives us a vested interest in the outcomes. The LNID Board is pleased to demonstrate a financial commitment to finding solutions to our mutual challenges as we continue to strive toward sustainable growth of irrigated agriculture in Lethbridge County.”

Dr. Neha Vaid, an assistant professor in the biology department, will study the potential for millets as a sustainable crop for marginal lands and as an aid in carbon sequestration and prevention of soil erosion in southern Alberta. She will test 11 millet varieties to analyze their potential as livestock feed, their impact on soil health, and seed and biomass yield.

Dr. Michele Konschuh, an associate professor in biology, will evaluate soil health in newly irrigated land parcels and compare it to land irrigated for longer periods. By comparing newly irrigated land, previously irrigated land and never irrigated land, Konschuh hopes to learn about the changes that occur when irrigation is introduced and what parameters need to be maintained to preserve soil health.

Dr. Dan Johnson, a professor in the geography and environment department, hopes to improve the forecasting of drought-related insect pests like grasshoppers. Johnson will conduct a spring survey of the grasshopper population to update the breeding survey usually conducted in late July and early August of the previous year. Johnson aims to develop better methods of forecasting grasshopper population growth, especially during droughts.

Dr. Hardeep Ryait, a professor at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience, will work on a project to improve sustainability and reduce the environmental impacts of livestock operations. Ryait wants to create a proof-of-concept livestock feedlot operation that incorporates solar panels for animal welfare, both for shade and electrical production. Cattle health would be monitored through an AI-powered video imaging system and radio-frequency identification (RFID) would be used to monitor feeding and watering behaviour to improve growth.

Dr. Paul Hazendonk, a professor in the chemistry & biochemistry department, will explore the production of biofuels from algae using hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL).

Alberta Environment and Protected Areas grant supports ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge research expertise

Eight ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge research projects focused on water storage, carbon storage, insect health, fish habitat and the endangered sage grouse will go ahead thanks to a $500,000 grant from Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA).

“We’re joining forces with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge to look deeper into environmental issues impacting southern Alberta,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, in a news release. “This grant will help us better maximize and manage Alberta’s water supply, reduce emissions, recover species at risk and protect the environment in the years ahead. This is a great example of government and university scientists working together.”

The three-year research grant will ultimately help both government and ULethbridge researchers better understand and respond to environmental challenges in southern Alberta and across the province.

"The Ministry's significant investment in these innovative and provincially important research projects led by ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers working with Environment and Protected Areas colleagues is greatly appreciated,” says Dr. Dena McMartin, vice-president research. “The research includes answering important questions about water resources and habitat management, carbon storage in landscapes, ensuring diverse and thriving insects, birds, and fish populations, as well as human actions and interventions that affect water and lands."

The projects target diverse areas of research. Drs. Matthew Bogard and Sam Woodman (BSc '15), a postdoctoral fellow, will collaborate with researchers from AEPA and Ducks Unlimited Canada to map and define patterns of prairie wetland carbon and nutrient stocks.

In another project, Drs. Theresa Burg and Melissa Chelak, a postdoctoral fellow, will work with AEPA scientists to see how endangered sage grouse populations are responding to recent habitat restoration, namely oil and gas reclamation efforts.

Drs. Laura Chasmer, Chris Hopkinson and Craig Coburn will be focusing on the vulnerability of peatlands to wildfire. Peatlands in Alberta have been drying out in recent years, reducing their ability to slow the spread of forest fires and resulting in increased carbon loss into the atmosphere. In addition, Chasmer and Hopkinson will also work on a project to assess the province’s lake water resources.

Climate phases, such as El Nino, can impact the productivity of native grassland and wetland ecosystems. Dr. Larry Flanagan and AEPA will examine how these year-to-year variations in weather contribute to fluctuations in productivity and carbon sequestration in these ecosystems and how these factors in turn can affect dryland farming, ranching, irrigated crop production and bird habitat.

How rainbow and brown trout in urban rivers such as the Bow River are affected by the combined effects of exposure to two stormwater associated chemicals as well as increased water temperatures and decreases in dissolved oxygen is the subject of research by Drs. Steve Wiseman and Andreas Eriksson, a postdoctoral fellow, in collaboration with researchers from AEPA and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan.

Grasshopper expert, Dr. Dan Johnson, will be conducting extensive field sampling of Orthoptera to determine their diversity, abundance and biomass in wildlife food webs. Orthoptera includes insects such as grasshoppers and crickets.

A project team led by Dr. Jodie Asselin, an anthropology professor, in collaboration with government researchers, will look at the impact of human activities on the ecology of the Upper Oldman Watershed to assist in the development of policies that balance the needs of recreational users with the protection of at-risk species such as bull trout.

“These projects will help to monitor and build understanding of the southern Alberta environment and potentially lead to better responses to droughts, floods, species at risk and less predictable climate changes,” says McMartin.

Ongoing monitoring program finds potato psyllids but no evidence of bacteria that causes zebra chip disease

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge biogeography professor Dr. Dan Johnson and his team have been monitoring Prairie potato fields for the past few years, looking for evidence of the potato psyllid insect and a bacterium it can carry that can lead to zebra chip disease in potato crops.

“We found hundreds of potato psyllids last year, but we have found under 10 so far this year and none have the bacteria that cause zebra chip,” says Johnson, who coordinates the Canadian Potato Psyllid and Zebra Chip Monitoring Network.

DNA testing for the bacteria is done in the Larry Kawchuk lab at the Lethbridge Research Centre, where Johnson is also a visiting scientist. Zebra chip has affected potato crops in the United States, Mexico and New Zealand, causing millions of dollars in losses. Potatoes with zebra chip develop unsightly dark lines when fried, making affected potatoes unsellable. The pathogen was found by researchers in Idaho as early as May this year, says Johnson. Given Alberta’s potato industry is worth more than a billion dollars alone, scientists and field workers want to ensure the province’s and Canada’s potato fields are being monitored.

At the end of last summer, Johnson found potato psyllids in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, thanks to cards collected and sent by network members there. This year, nearly 50 fields in Alberta are being monitored every two weeks and sometimes more frequently. Slightly sticky cards are placed on stakes in the fields and later examined under microscopes. With the expansion of the Canadian monitoring network, the researchers can map locations where the psyllids are found and compare their numbers to weather patterns and natural enemies of the pests.

Johnson and his team have produced a network newsletter with a colour photo guide so growers can more easily watch for the stages of the potato psyllid.

The Canadian monitoring program began in 2013 in cooperation with Scott Meers, an insect management specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. No psyllids were found in 2013 or 2014 and small numbers were detected in 2015 and 2016. That none have carried the bacteria that leads to zebra chip is good news, says Johnson.

The research and monitoring network is supported by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Growing Forward 2 (a federal-provincial-territorial partnership), the Canadian Horticultural Council and the Potato Growers of Alberta.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students have also been involved in the project, including, Christian Sapsford (BSc '17), Qing Xia, a graduate student studying the effect of weather and climate on the potato psyllid, Celeste Barnes, a graduate student who provided GIS and mapping collaboration and Mahsa Miri, a graduate student in New Media who assisted with the newsletter and brochures.

Johnson and monitoring network keeping an eye out for potato 'zebra chip' disease

Even though the insect vector that can spread the zebra chip pathogen in potatoes has been found in in Alberta, Prof. Dan Johnson at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge isn’t alarmed yet and recommends potato growers take no action at this time beyond field sampling.

Johnson, who co-ordinates the Canadian Potato Psyllid and Zebra Chip Monitoring Network and leads the Alberta research project on this topic, says the potato psyllid has likely been present in Alberta in very low numbers for decades but none of the insects found in Canada have tested positive for the bacteria that causes the zebra chip disease.

Low levels of insecticide use in Alberta may be helping to keep the potato psyllid at bay.

“The very low level of insecticide use, often none at all, in potato fields in Alberta allows the natural enemies of the potato psyllid to exist,” says Johnson. “An insecticide program is costly and, in some cases, can work against other components of the crop ecosystem. When conditions permit, like in this case, a better scenario is to have healthy populations of insects that are enemies of potato psyllids and other small insects. In this situation, we may have strong natural controls in place that we can encourage.”

Zebra chip has caused millions of dollars in losses for potato farmers in New Zealand and the United States. Warmer environmental conditions and insect movements in air and on transported plants are thought to be responsible for the expanded range of the insects. The potato psyllid, about the size of an aphid, feeds only on potato and tomato plants and some related wild plants, and can transmit bacteria that lead to zebra chip. Infected plants are affected in growth, yield and quality. Potatoes with zebra chip, while still edible, develop unsightly black lines that look like zebra stripes when fried, making them unsellable. Johnson has led the Canadian monitoring program since it began in 2013 in response to a proposal for collaboration. To test for the presence of the psyllid, sticky yellow cards are placed on stakes in potato fields. None were found in 2013 or 2014 but very small numbers were detected in 2015 and 2016.

“We’ve examined up to 2,000 cards a year at the U of L,” says Johnson. “Last year, we found small numbers of adult potato psyllids in Alberta but none tested positive for the pathogen that causes zebra chip.”

The DNA testing is conducted by Dr. Larry Kawchuk at the Lethbridge Research Centre. Scott Meers, with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, is collaborating on field sampling and design of a management plan. The cross-Canada monitoring network is funded by Growing Forward 2 through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Agri-Science clusters, managed by the Canadian Horticultural Council, with the participation of groups like the Potato Growers of Alberta.

Education begins with respect

A year after opening a dialogue on diversity and respect, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty Association's Gender, Equity and Diversity Caucus is looking to build upon that momentum with the 2nd Annual Respect & Diversity Awareness Week.

Running Mar. 5-9 at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, this year's theme for the weeklong conversation is "Respect and learning go hand in hand".

"Last year was great for an inaugural event," says Dr. Carly Adams, Chair of the Gender, Equity and Diversity Caucus. "We thought how it was taken up by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community was wonderful. It's a conversation that needs to be ongoing."

Events such as a Talking About Teaching panel discussion through the Centre for the Advancement of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CAETL) spurred the campus community into thinking about how we interact with one another, in classrooms, meeting rooms and even as we walk through the hallways.

"As a faculty member who attended these talks, I thought about the issues raised and then took them into my classroom," says Adams. "I hope that others took the things they heard and tried to adapt new strategies in the ways they dealt with students or fellow faculty."

If anything, the week created an environment where issues of inclusion and respect can be discussed. It also established an awareness of the caucus and took its work to another level. In early February, the caucus played a role in the Discover Diversity conference hosted by the City of Lethbridge and co-sponsored by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

"I was really pleased we were able to be a part of that because not only did we have an opportunity to talk about the caucus but also the respect and diversity week and some of the other initiatives we're involved in," says Adams. "It led to an even wider discussion about workplace diversity and respect beyond our campus."

This year's awareness week will feature a few new additions, including an Ignite! event on Wednesday, Mar. 7 at 5 p.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Library (10th floor). Described as a fun, informative, rapid-fire session, participants are tasked to speak to 20 pictures or slides of their choice, all in a five-minute window of time, as they wax eloquent about diversity and/or gender.

"We're really excited about this event," says Adams. "We have a number of faculty lined up to take part, as well as people from the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG) and the Students' Union. In total it's about 12 to 15 people, and it should create a really lively discussion from all the different perspectives across campus."

The line up of speakers includes Dr. Kevin McGeough (Geography), Yale Belanger (Native American Studies), Dan Johnson (Environmental Science), Carol Williams (Women and Gender Studies), Phil Jones (CAETL/Health Sciences), Marinus Swanepoel (Library), LPRIG, Shelia McManus (History), Rob Sutherland (CCBN/ULFA) and Tanya Harnett (Native American Studies/Fine Arts).

Other events for the week include a film screening of MissRepresentation, a documentary exploring how the media's misrepresentation of women has led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. The Gender, Equity, and Diversity Caucus is joining the YWCA, Womanspace, Campus Women's Centre and LPIRG in sponsoring the film screening that takes place Thursday, Mar. 8 at 7 p.m. in Galileo's Gallery and coincides with International Women's Day.

On Friday, Mar. 9, Craig Milner from the Faculty of Management will present Student Diversity Rocks: Developing High Performance Teams in the Classroom (1 p.m., M1040).

"He's discussing diversity in teams, and how we might leverage some of the different experiences of our students in the classroom to create different conversations in groups," says Adams of the one-hour workshop.
While the week concludes with Milner's presentation, the conversation does not, and will be picked up a week later when the Department of Women & Gender Studies, with assistance from Adams' group, will present Why Women and Gender Studies? A Multigenerational Roundtable and Conversation, Friday, Mar. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballroom.

"Last year, we came away thinking it was a very positive week and worth continuing," says Adams. "We invite everyone to come out for these events and I hope that this will give these important issues even more exposure."

Public Professor column seeking submissions

The Lethbridge Herald's Public Professor column is looking for input from ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers and their areas of expertise.

The weekly column, which appears every Saturday in the Herald, features short articles written by U of L faculty on their areas of research. The idea is to get the readership interested in the diversity of topics addressed by the various units at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and, when practical, how this research may impact the lives and world of the readership.

The column was started by Dr. James Linville and Dr. Dan Johnson in December 2008, and several dozen articles on a wide variety of subjects have been published. These include things like the so-called "Cargo Cults" to quantum mechanics, the demise of roadside flowers due to herbicide use to Darwin's journey.

The articles have to be as close to 600 words as possible and be written in a non technical style relatively free from jargon. Basically, they should be readable by people with a high school level of reading. The articles might be about experiments you are running and why they are important, to little known facts of history, or the contribution of great, and perhaps misunderstood, scholars from the past. In some cases, even a course description could be worth developing into an article.

Those interested in submitting articles can do so to the Lethbridge Herald. Articles must be in by Wednesday for inclusion in the Saturday paper. A colour photo of the author is also necessary.

Climate Cover-Up on campus tonight

Scientists are often so focussed on measuring the evidence required to determine how things work that they either forget or do not have time for the needs of public education, and the directions the nation will take in applying the knowledge gained by science.

James Hoggan and Richard Littlemore have recently produced a book entitled Climate Cover-Up, in which they examine the powerful public relations forces brought to bear against mainstream climate science, physics and chemistry, in order to blunt the message that we need to take steps to avoid future harm.

Littlemore will appear Thursday night, 7 p.m. in Room PE250 of 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge to discuss: Climate Cover-Up: The Crusade to Deny Global Warming?

As a PR professional himself, Hoggan felt a strong need to keep the work of PR honest, and he recognized the methods that were used in the attacks on the science findings.

He says "it is infuriating, as a public relations professional, to watch my colleagues use their skills, their training and their considerable intellect to poison the international debate on climate change."

Some of the arguments of the self-appointed skeptics are lacking in both common sense and modern science, but other tactics and campaigns are skillfully designed to appear to show debate among informed physical scientists regarding whether there is an effect caused by atmospheric change at all.

Hoggan and Littlemore track the funds and describe the motives behind the campaigns, noting that "few PR offences have been so obvious, so successful and so despicable as the attack on the scientific certainty of climate change."

They call the unprecedented PR attack "a triumph of disinformation – one of the boldest and most extensive PR campaigns in history".

This special edition of SACPA (Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs) on campus will be moderated by Dan Johnson of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's geography department.

Memorial service for U of L alumnus

A memorial service will be held today for the late Patrick (Chi Ho) Chan, a U of L alumnus and research assistant who passed away recently at the age of 29.

The service begins at 2 p.m. in the Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building (AWESB).

Chan, who studied under the tutelage of geography professor Dr. Dan Johnson, worked first as a summer student and then part-time on environmental research related to using natural agents to replace chemicals used in agriculture.

When he graduated at the 2009 Spring convocation, he was offered and accepted a full-time job as a research technician in the AWESB. Chan and Johnson worked closely together in both the lab and field, researching environmental safety testing and bioproduct production.

Chan was well known on campus with his refreshing combination of a sunny disposition and an unfailing dedication to hard work, accomplishment and always doing the right thing.

Always willing to do more than his share in the AWESB, as well as assist Johnson and graduate students Rob Sonnenberg, Paul Irvine and Chien Yang, Chan is survived by his parents Man Chit Chan and Jenny Chan, his sister Patty, and partner Joanna Huang.
