The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has renamed its Elders Room, dedicating the space as the Carolla Calf Robe Elders and Ceremony Room at a ceremonial event in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall.

Carolla (Napiakii) Calf Robe was an Elder in Residence at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for 11 years.

Carolla (Napiakii) Calf Robe was an Elder in Residence at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for 11 years until her untimely passing in May 2019. As an Iniskim Elder, Calf Robe would spend time on campus offering support and guidance to the campus community.

“Carolla Calf Robe was a beloved and cherished Elder who selflessly served the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge community, coming in twice a month, September through April, each year,” says Andrea Amelinckx, Chair of the Dhillon School of Business – Indigenous Governance & Business Management Program. “She also welcomed U of L community outreach when she was not on campus, always ready to provide support and traditional counsel to those in need.”

Described as a native herbalist, Calf Robe learned about plants from the Grandmothers and was transferred the right to make medicine from her own grandmother in the 1970s. She has also instructed others in plant identification and common uses. Calf Robe often spoke to health sciences classes to share her knowledge of local plants.

She worked with several agencies and used her insight, based on both traditional and Western models, to help people make changes in their lives. In addition to the U of L, Calf Robe worked with Red Crow College and the Galileo Educational Network.

“The Elders Room is a very important spot on our campus and it’s fitting we rename it in honour of a woman who gave so much to our community,” says Dr. Mike Mahon, U of L president and vice-chancellor. “Her eagerness to provide counsel and allow us to learn from her vast wisdom and experience enhanced greatly the campus experience for all students, faculty and staff.”

The Carolla Calf Robe Elders and Ceremony Room is open to all students, faculty and staff at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. There are three current Elders in Residence, including Francis First Charger, Shirlee Crow Shoe and Cathy Hunt.

Coming full circle

In the Blackfoot culture, the circle represents all things connected in the universe: the four directions, the four seasons, the four elements, the four sacred medicines. The circular design of tipis promotes face-to-face communication, discussion and decision-making.

It’s perhaps fitting that student mentors in the Scotiabank First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) Mentorship program in the U of L’s Faculty of Management often come “full circle.”

Recognizing the challenges FNMI students face, this visionary program was launched in 2012 aiming to break down barriers to their education. It encourages First Nations youth to complete high school and pursue post-secondary studies. It is beginning to see successes as the first mentees have completed high school and are attending university this fall.

“For some families, their parents didn't have the opportunity to go to college or university, so it's foreign to them. It really helps for the younger students to have positive role models who are currently attending university,” says Rhonda Crow, coordinator, First Nations Governance in the Faculty of Management.

The mentorship program is unique in the broad range of students it reaches, spanning university to middle school. U of L FNMI alumni serve as mentors to Aboriginal students in the management and pre-management programs. In turn, U of L students pay it forward by providing guidance to middle school and senior high FNMI students in Lethbridge, as well as schools on the reserve. A recent addition to the program includes invitations to prominent alumni (such as Hon. Jennifer Campeau (BMgt '08), MLA for Saskatoon Fairview) to spend a week on campus as executives-in-residence, speaking to classes, community organizations and local schools.

"Students who are mentored or mentor others are more likely to feel supported and engaged in both the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and local community, and are less likely to drop out," explains Andrea Amelinckx, director and faculty member in the U of L’s First Nations Governance program.

Fifth-year U of L student Alison Frank can further attest to this, having seen first hand the true impact of the FNMI Youth Mentorship program. Frank grew up in a home with six brothers, so when she first heard about the opportunity to mentor youth, she personally wanted to make meaningful connections with younger girls, in addition to gaining valuable real-life work experience. Frank was paired with three students who were in middle school at the time.

"It was a little bit tough in the beginning because, with teenagers, you have to develop a level of trust. However, as I started getting to know them, a relationship and eventually a friendship formed. I talked to them weekly, sometimes even daily," recalls Frank. "It gave me little sisters, something I've always wanted."

During the next three years, Frank connected with the girls through group activities like bowling and going to the movies, but there was always a greater underlying purpose.

"I'm an education major, so it was really important to me to empower them to go to, and stay, in school, to show them that as mentors we are ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ students and you can be, too."

This past year, Frank watched as all of the girls she had journeyed with were handed high school diplomas.

"I had heard about the good times, as well as the hard times in their lives, and I knew what they had been through. So seeing them graduate brought tears to my eyes. I was so proud of them. It made it all worth it."

Since becoming involved with the program, Frank has moved into a supervisor role and is now in a position where she mentors the mentors.

"We always talk about the fact that you never know who is looking up to you. You have to carry yourself in a manner that reflects how you would want to be seen. As students at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, we're future leaders, and we have to carry that responsibility," Frank explains.

Included in a group of 20 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ student mentors Frank is overseeing, are two of the three girls she originally met all those years ago. Having graduated from high school, the girls are continuing their education at the U of L and have signed up to be mentors themselves.

"It's really come full circle. We're growing with each other through this program," says Frank, with a big smile. "It's a ripple effect, and it's just going to keep getting bigger and bigger. I'm excited to see where it goes."

Management students gain valuable work experience in Hungary

The 11 students who participated in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s first Hungary Work Study program gained new experiences and knowledge and a few even came away with job offers.

The students faced the challenge of working at a job in a foreign country where the majority of their co-workers didn’t speak English.

“I would highly recommend it,” says Kathy Hong, a Faculty of Management student majoring in marketing and kinesiology. “You learn a lot more from this kind of experience than you do sitting in a classroom.”

“I personally enjoyed the challenge and taking whatever they threw at me and seeing what I could do with it,” says Cameron Pituley, a student working on a combined Bachelor of Management degree, majoring in finance and music.

“All the students did extremely well despite some language barriers and culture shock. Their professionalism and positive attitudes helped them overcome the difficulties they faced. I am very proud of them,” says Gizelle Tiponut, course instructor and co-ordinator for International Programs, outgoing exchanges, with the Faculty of Management.

Both Hungarian speakers, Tiponut and Michael Lanyi, an instructor in the U of L’s Department of Economics and Tiponut’s husband, found suitable placements for each of the participating students. Lanyi joined the trip as resource person and chaperone. The group stayed at a private hostel in the outskirts of Budapest, commuting to their workplaces using public transit.

A work-study program gives students insights into other cultures and foreign workplaces, all the while providing them with a valuable credential for their resume. In addition to their duties at their Hungarian workplaces, the students were required to work on assignments, participate in field trips and attend academic seminars related to the Hungarian culture and workplace, economy and history.

Hong, who has an interest in sports marketing, worked at the Budapest Honvéd Football Club for five weeks and then for Red Bull Hungary for one week doing web analysis.

“I learned the importance of marketing research. They’re always pushing it in class but it’s not an area of interest for me. I always pushed it aside,” says Hong. “But I learned, especially when I was doing the web analysis for Red Bull, how important it is to know the numbers.”

Hannah Steenwyk, (BMus ’14), a management student majoring in human resources, worked in sales and development at Atalian Global Services, a multinational facility management company. She also conducted market research and created a performance management system to reward lower level employees.

“I learned to work in a high pressure situation with deadlines and how to work with people when you are just plunked into an office,” she says. “It was a cohesive little unit. Everyone was really helpful. Overall, it was a wonderful experience.”

Daniel Brisebois, a management student who’s majoring in marketing and minoring in international management, worked at Enco Software. He created a marketing brochure, translated two websites into English, and crafted a marketing plan for the company’s expansion.

“I learned to overcome adversity. Nothing’s ever going to be perfect so you have to get around it somehow,” he says. “I’d tell any student who’s interested to absolutely do it. Even if it’s not part of their degree, the combination of the internship as well as the study allows you to really get to know what it’s like to be abroad instead of just being a tourist.”

Pituley worked for Bonafarm Group, the largest agricultural company in Hungary, which includes feedlots, a meat-processing facility, wheat production, dairy and a winery. He worked for Bonafarm’s dairy company and was tasked with doing a top-down industry analysis and creating a detailed competitor comparison.

“I had an amazing experience,” he says. “I learned so much about so many different things. It wasn’t just academic. Every time we went out for lunch I would be sitting with CEOs and CFOs gathering information about potential career paths and life experience.”

The Hungary Work Study Program, a 4000-level management course, will be offered every other year and was designed after the Faculty of Management’s Malaysia Work Study Program, which has been operating for 17 years.

“Some of the initial employers are still with us and this past year we had 12 students participate,” says Andrea Amelinckx, director of International Programs and First Nations Governance in the Faculty of Management. “Whether Kuala Lumpur or Budapest, you’re being immersed in a totally different culture. We want students to be exposed to situations with great learning potential.”

The students also had high praise for Tiponut and Lanyi.

“They had to put up with 11 students in the same house for six weeks,” says Pituley. “They were very accommodating and very willing to help us whenever we had a problem.”

“It was a really good experience for both the students and us,” says Tiponut. “We’ll do it again, for sure.”

Saskatchewan MLA to share her wisdom with U of L students

Saskatoon Fairview MLA Jennifer Campeau, who completed a bachelor’s degree in the First Nations Governance program in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Faculty of Management, will be back in Lethbridge Jan. 26 to 30, 2015 to share her expertise with students and youth.

"We are delighted and honoured that one of our graduates, the Honourable Minister Jennifer Campeau, is returning to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge to serve as the inaugural Executive In Residence for our Scotiabank First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Mentors Program,” says Faculty of Management Dean Dr. Bob Ellis. “Her leadership and dedication to public service make her an inspiration for our students and the entire community. We wish to express our deep appreciation to Scotiabank for supporting this wonderful initiative.”

“We are proud to host the Honourable Minister Campeau and welcome her back to southern Alberta. She was one of the first graduates of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s First Nations Governance Program in 2008 and three short years later she was elected to the Saskatchewan legislature,” says Andrea Amelinckx, Chair of the First Nations Governance Area in the Faculty of Management. "She was recently appointed Minister of Central Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Transportation Company. She is an engaging speaker and an outstanding role model for our students and Aboriginal youth in general. We know they will benefit from her experiences."

Campeau was first elected to the Saskatchewan legislature in 2011. In 2013, she was appointed legislative secretary to Saskatchewan’s education minister. She also chaired a Premier’s Aboriginal Youth Task Force at the request of Premier Brad Wall. In 2014, she became Minister of Central Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Transportation Company.

Before she entered politics, Campeau was an instructor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan and a doctoral student in the Department of Native Studies. After she graduated from the U of L, she obtained a Masters of Business Administration degree at the U of S.

The purpose of the Scotiabank First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Mentors Program is to engage Aboriginal youth in a culturally sensitive, safe and welcoming environment. Mentors are U of L Aboriginal students who provide support to Aboriginal youth aged 12 to 17 enrolled in school in Lethbridge or on the Blood and Piikani reserves. Youth and their mentors meet twice a month to share common interests and participate in activities.

As Executive In Residence, Campeau will speak to several U of L classes, talk to graduate students and students in the First Nations Transition Program, and meet with area high school students. At a dinner Thursday evening, she will speak to the importance of role modeling and mentorship for Aboriginal youth. She will be available to speak to media on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. in the Markin Hall atrium.

Education begins with respect

A year after opening a dialogue on diversity and respect, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty Association's Gender, Equity and Diversity Caucus is looking to build upon that momentum with the 2nd Annual Respect & Diversity Awareness Week.

Running Mar. 5-9 at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, this year's theme for the weeklong conversation is "Respect and learning go hand in hand".

"Last year was great for an inaugural event," says Dr. Carly Adams, Chair of the Gender, Equity and Diversity Caucus. "We thought how it was taken up by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community was wonderful. It's a conversation that needs to be ongoing."

Events such as a Talking About Teaching panel discussion through the Centre for the Advancement of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CAETL) spurred the campus community into thinking about how we interact with one another, in classrooms, meeting rooms and even as we walk through the hallways.

"As a faculty member who attended these talks, I thought about the issues raised and then took them into my classroom," says Adams. "I hope that others took the things they heard and tried to adapt new strategies in the ways they dealt with students or fellow faculty."

If anything, the week created an environment where issues of inclusion and respect can be discussed. It also established an awareness of the caucus and took its work to another level. In early February, the caucus played a role in the Discover Diversity conference hosted by the City of Lethbridge and co-sponsored by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

"I was really pleased we were able to be a part of that because not only did we have an opportunity to talk about the caucus but also the respect and diversity week and some of the other initiatives we're involved in," says Adams. "It led to an even wider discussion about workplace diversity and respect beyond our campus."

This year's awareness week will feature a few new additions, including an Ignite! event on Wednesday, Mar. 7 at 5 p.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Library (10th floor). Described as a fun, informative, rapid-fire session, participants are tasked to speak to 20 pictures or slides of their choice, all in a five-minute window of time, as they wax eloquent about diversity and/or gender.

"We're really excited about this event," says Adams. "We have a number of faculty lined up to take part, as well as people from the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG) and the Students' Union. In total it's about 12 to 15 people, and it should create a really lively discussion from all the different perspectives across campus."

The line up of speakers includes Dr. Kevin McGeough (Geography), Yale Belanger (Native American Studies), Dan Johnson (Environmental Science), Carol Williams (Women and Gender Studies), Phil Jones (CAETL/Health Sciences), Marinus Swanepoel (Library), LPRIG, Shelia McManus (History), Rob Sutherland (CCBN/ULFA) and Tanya Harnett (Native American Studies/Fine Arts).

Other events for the week include a film screening of MissRepresentation, a documentary exploring how the media's misrepresentation of women has led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. The Gender, Equity, and Diversity Caucus is joining the YWCA, Womanspace, Campus Women's Centre and LPIRG in sponsoring the film screening that takes place Thursday, Mar. 8 at 7 p.m. in Galileo's Gallery and coincides with International Women's Day.

On Friday, Mar. 9, Craig Milner from the Faculty of Management will present Student Diversity Rocks: Developing High Performance Teams in the Classroom (1 p.m., M1040).

"He's discussing diversity in teams, and how we might leverage some of the different experiences of our students in the classroom to create different conversations in groups," says Adams of the one-hour workshop.
While the week concludes with Milner's presentation, the conversation does not, and will be picked up a week later when the Department of Women & Gender Studies, with assistance from Adams' group, will present Why Women and Gender Studies? A Multigenerational Roundtable and Conversation, Friday, Mar. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballroom.

"Last year, we came away thinking it was a very positive week and worth continuing," says Adams. "We invite everyone to come out for these events and I hope that this will give these important issues even more exposure."

Experiencing as much as possible

International exchange student Radek Eryk Bachorz might not yet know where he's going to end up, but it's safe to say it'll be an interesting ride getting there.

The 26-year-old native of Poland is completing his fourth year of study at the U of L, turning what was initially a one-year exchange opportunity into an entirely new life with no apparent boundaries.

"I'm trying to keep the broad perspective on everything," says Bachorz when asked about his career aspirations. "Having a narrow goal isn't the best for me, it's about having wide horizons and looking for something that will really be satisfying, not necessarily profitable at first, but will put a smile on my face and make me happy to go to work every day."

Polish exchange student Radek Eryk Bachorz has made the most of his opportunities at the U of L.

Currently studying international management with minors in supply chain management and social responsibility, Bachorz actually already has a master's degree. He completed his master's in Investment and Corporate Financial Strategies in August 2010 from Poznan ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Economics in Poland, a degree supplemented by his exchange work here at the U of L.

But Bachorz's experience is about so much more than the classroom, something he only discovered after finishing his master's and took another look at his education.

"After completing my degree, I got really involved in student life last year," says Bachorz. "I totally changed my way of attending school, where I realize it's not only about getting good marks, it's also about extra-curricular activities."

His involvement with the Faculty of Management's JDC West business case competition was the impetus.

"My co-captains, Jill Morrison and Travis Letwin, put me in this different world and opened my eyes on new opportunities," he says. "I really wanted to give something back to the Alberta community, but there were too many things taking up my time, and I was really determined to finish my degree back in Europe. Last fall I decided to focus a bit less on being outstanding academically to try and get more involved in non-academic activities."

He volunteered for YWCA Lethbridge and the Humane Society, helped out the Management International Programs Office as a mentor in their buddy program, participated in the International Centre for Students (ICS) Cultural Expo and was keen to assist at various faculty functions such as Management Preview Day. This past spring he spent a week hustling change outside the Students' Union as one of the 5 Days for the Homeless participants and gladly had his head shaved (for the fourth straight year) as a supporter of the Head Shave for Cancer initiative.

"When I had the opportunity to take less of a course load, I knew this is what I wanted to do," says Bachorz. "It's not just about the GPA, it's also about getting
involved and participating in the student life."

He credits the U of L culture for helping him thrive in his new country, and gives thanks to both the ICS (especially Charlene Janes) and the International Exchange program in the Faculty of Management (specifically Andrea Amelinckx, Rhonda Crow and Gizelle Tiponut) for helping in his transition.

"Honestly, after the first semester, I was so impressed with how approachable everybody was," he says. "It's a very practical atmosphere here, so many small groups, you can really go to your prof or any faculty or staff member and you'll be treated as a valuable student, not just one of a thousand.

"After just a few semesters I found you would be called by name in the hallways and that was very surprising to me. I had never seen anything like that before. You are really treated as a person here, not just someone known by their Student ID number, who is coming to get a degree and leaving the university unnoticed."

When exactly he'll finish his degree, he's not sure. Right now he's looking to secure a job on campus to stay in Lethbridge for the summer. Beyond that, he will continue to learn and look to make an impact, wherever that may lead him.

"Education is the best investment," says Bachorz. "I have learned so many valuable things from people I've met. The relationships you make are invaluable. You guys in Canada are so supportive. It is great to be given such an amazing opportunity to live and study here."

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ students prosper from ELAP program

For many people, the opportunity to study in another country is the opportunity of a lifetime. It can also prove to be very expensive, and many students do not have the resources to study abroad. For one group of students from South America, a new scholarship has made this opportunity possible.

Candela Yrazabal Gonzalez is a management exchange student from Argentina. She recently received the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarship, allowing her to study at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge for the fall semester.

"I really wanted to have an experience in Canada, and the programs at the U of L really appealed to me," explains Yrazabal Gonzalez. "There are professors and students here from all over the world, so the U of L seemed like an interesting place to be."

The ELAP provides funding for students in Latin America to come study in Canada. Launched in 2009 by the federal government, this program awards scholarships of up to $7,500 for undergraduate exchanges of four months. Scholarships are awarded primarily based on academic standing and English skills.

This semester, Rhonda Crow, the incoming exchange co-ordinator for the Faculty of Management, submitted funding applications for 12 students from Latin America to attend the U of L. All 12, including Yrazabal Gonzalez, received the full scholarship (a total of $90,000 for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ) and are currently studying at the U of L.

"This program goes a long way in supporting the mandate of the International Management Program at the U of L," says Andrea Amelinckx, the program's director. "We aim to provide students with opportunities to gain a greater understanding of cross-cultural management practices and an appreciation of global and cultural diversity. By sending our students abroad and by welcoming exchange students here, we enrich campus life and expose students to greater cultural diversity and encourage lasting international linkages."

For Yrazabal Gonzalez, the ELAP scholarship means the opportunity to learn in new ways that would not be possible in her home country.

"There are different resources and opportunities here than in Argentina," she says. "Being here allows me to learn from a different point of view and to gain cross-cultural knowledge."

Yrazabal Gonzalez is even taking her international study opportunity to another level by volunteering with the Aboriginal Council of Lethbridge. She says the volunteer work extends her learning outside of the classroom, and allows her to learn about aboriginal culture, which is one of her research interests.

Yrazabal Gonzalez and her fellow recipients of the scholarship are part of a larger group of 56 exchange students currently studying at the U of L.

"Exchange students have been instrumental in the growth of the International Management Program," says Amelinckx. "Students from the U of L continually meet students from other countries and learn about their cultures. We have a diverse range of exchange destinations, allowing our students many options for studying abroad and also bringing in students from all over the world."

Although Yrazabal Gonzalez plans to return to Argentina after her semester here, she intends to maintain a connection with Canada. She is interested in international development and hopes to work with the United Nations. She sees her experience at the U of L as helping her reach not only career goals but allowing her to grow in other ways.

"I am so happy to be here and I am learning so much," says Yrazabal Gonzalez. "I couldn't be here without the ELAP scholarship. This scholarship has opened a big door for me."

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is holding its annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, May 6, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballrooms. A total of 83 employees who have completed 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service, and 18 retiring employees will be honoured at the event.

All employees are invited to the ceremony and reception to honour the award recipients listed below. The reception will include light refreshments.

New program creates fresh opportunities

While many wish to pursue a university degree, not everyone is able to dedicate four or five years to post-secondary education. In order to fulfill the diverse needs of its students, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is offering a brand new 10-course Management Certificate in First Nations Governance (FNG).

"The certificate program is ideal for anyone with an interest in First Nations governance and management training but who has limited time," says U of L alumna Rhonda Crow (Mgt Cert '97, BMgt '99), coordinator of the FNG program. "We also hope to attract students who may have years of on-the-job training, but need formal academic training to enhance their skills, open up new job opportunities or advance their careers to a managerial level."

Students in the certificate program take courses in management, Native American Studies (NAS), writing and First Nations governance. Those who successfully complete the certificate program have the option of transferring their courses to a bachelor of management in FNG.

Crow says there is a growing demand for First Nations managers and is confident that the FNG program will help prepare up-and-coming community leaders.

"In addition to the skills a management degree offers, FNG graduates have the added component of First Nations content that will help those working with First Nations people and communities," says Crow.

The degree prepares graduates for careers in leadership, government, business, band administration and self-government. Crow accepted the position as coordinator of the FNG program last year.

"We are very pleased Rhonda is here. She is a wonderful role model and support for students in the program and is a significant addition to the office," says Andrea Amelinckx, director of the FNG program.

Crow is responsible for program marketing, student recruitment, retention and support.

"As an alumna, I relate well to the students. I work with those who are having difficulty in their courses, offering tutoring or directing them to others who can provide appropriate assistance," explains Crow. "I try to help students succeed in any way I can."

Karen McCarthy (Mgt '08) was the program's first graduate.

"The program was very good, focusing on current issues in First Nations communities, particularly self-government and self-reliance," says McCarthy. "It opened the doors for me to further my education even more."

Since its launch in 2003 through a partnership of the Faculty of Management and the Department of Native American Studies, the FNG program continues to grow, with more graduates anticipated by the end of this year.
