Three Horns named to Canadian squad

Canada, the defending champions of the Hong Kong Sevens and reigning IRB Sevens Challenge Cup holders, have named their roster for the upcoming IRB event in China, which kicks off on Mar. 23.

Head Coach John Tait, having recently guided the Canadian women to a second consecutive victory at the USA Sevens in Las Vegas, has named a strong side full of speed, power and experience.

Leading the Canadians in pursuit of their sixth consecutive major tournament win will be experienced veterans like Kelly Russell, who played every minute of every game for Canada at their previous IRB Challenge Cup win, in Dubai. Russell makes up one twelfth of a squad that features a dynamic and exciting core of talent. Powerful runners like Alberta's Jen Kish and Manitoba's Mandy Marchak will look to punch holes in opposition defences and make room for the raw speed and creativity embodied in the likes Ghislaine Landry and former ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorn Ashley Steacy.

Steacy, one of the most decorated players CIS women's rugby history was a part of the 'Horns three CIS Championships teams and was a two-time CIS Player of the Year.

Joining Steacy from the 'Horns program are Kelsey Willoughby and Kayla Moleschi, who both helped the 'Horns win a sixth consecutive Canada West title last fall. Willoughby was the Canada West MVP and All-Canadian, while Moleschi stormed on to the CIS scene last year, winning the Canada West Rookie of the Year award and being named both a CIS All-Canadian and CIS Championship All-Star.

Selection for the Hong Kong tournament has been a process unrivaled in the history of Canadian women's rugby. Having assembled talent from Europe, the national club scene, as well as the Canadian university game, twenty committed athletes have spent months working on their speed, fitness and skill at Rugby Canada's Centre of Excellence in Langford, British Columbia. The Canadian coaching staff has been able to gather an unprecedented amount of data on their players and have had the opportunity to witness athletes in head-to-head competition for extended periods of time. Funding from the Canadian government's "Own The Podium" program has meant that Canada's sevens stars are benefitting from the tools necessary to maintain their status as the world's number one team. Such funding enabled opportunities like the recent clinic put on at the C.O.E. in Langford by legendary New Zealand kicking coach Mick "The Kick" Byrne.

Doolittle wraps up Scholars Series

Lisa Doolittle presents the third and final lecture in the 2010 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Scholars Public Presentations series Tuesday, Mar. 23.

Dr. Claudia Malacrida, Dr. Brian Titley and Doolittle are the featured speakers in this year's edition of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Scholars Public Presentations. Covering topics from the treatment of people with intellectual disabilities to the attempted reformation of female public sinners by the Catholic Church to an examination of the role that dancing and spectacle helped define the identity of the Blackfoot people of southern Alberta, the three ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge professors cover a wide range of topics.

On Tuesday, Doolittle presents Performing Negotiations: Blackfoot Dance/Spectacle, the Colony, and Multicultural Canada 1870-2010. The lecture is open to everyone and takes place at 4 p.m. in AH100. Admission is free.

The Blackfoot people of southern Alberta use dancing/spectacle to express identity and their ongoing negotiations with settler populations. In the late 19th Century, dancing among aboriginal peoples was banned. Beginning in the early 20th Century, aboriginal dance was showcased in corporate sponsored 'white' events like the Calgary Stampede and Banff 'Indian Days'. Near the end of the 20th Century, the Canadian government passed the Multiculturalism Act, "to recognize all Canadians as full and equal participants in Canadian society."

Promoting culture-specific dance was fundamental to the multicultural agenda. Doolittle (theatre and dramatic arts) describes how representations of culture as performed in dance uncover the shifting policies concerning national identity and destabilize notions about the role of dance performances in Canadian multiculturalism.

The Board of Governors established the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Scholars Program in 2007 to recognize the excellence of faculty members in the areas of research, scholarship and creative performance. Each ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Scholar must give a public lecture or performance as part of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Scholars Series at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge during the two-year term of their designation as a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Scholar.

The presentations will highlight the ongoing research interests of U of L faculty and how they contribute to their course teachings.

A trio of diverse educators from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will participate in the 2010 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Scholars Public Presentations series beginning in March.

– Dehumanization as a Way of Life: Alberta's History of 'Treating' People with Intellectual Disabilities, Mar. 9

In 1928, with hopes of improving services for people deemed in the language of the time to be "mental defectives," the province of Alberta opened the Provincial Training School (eventually renamed The Michener Centre) outside Red Deer. At one time housing over 2,300 inmates, the school operated hand in glove with the province's Eugenics Board.

Residents of Michener were the largest single group of Albertans to experience involuntary sterilization. Based on interviews and archival materials, Malacrida (sociology) describes daily life in the institution and the ways that space, time and care were organized to dehumanize and devalue the people who lived there.

"Understanding the history of places like Michener Centre is important," says Malacrida. "Institutionalization is not dead, and Michener survivors can tell us why this approach is one we should not continue."

Late in the Middle Ages the Catholic Church established convents to reform female 'public sinners' who were mainly, though not exclusively, prostitutes. The institutions, known as refuges or asylums, were usually named after Mary Magdalen.

In this presentation, Titley (education) provides a general history of Magdalen asylums as representations of the Catholic Church's assumed authority in sexual morality. He examines types of discipline in the institutions; the role of surveillance and isolation in preventing sinful relapses; and the practices of self-mortification that could lead to semi-religious status for the penitents and ultimately a happy death. He also looks at the transformation in North America of the asylums into private reformatories for 'incorrigible' adolescent girls.

LPIRG hosts film screening

The Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG), along with the Lethbridge and District Chapter of the Council of Canadians, is presenting a screening of "You, Me and the SPP: Trading Democracy for Corporate Rule" tonight at the Lethbridge Public Library.

Part of a national tour, it will be the debut screening of the documentary film in Lethbridge and features a question and answer period with filmmaker Paul Manly following the 7 p.m. show.

What do secrecy, police provocateurs, an assault on democracy and infringements on citizens' rights have in common? The Security and Prosperity Partnership.

The Canadian government says "The Security and Prosperity Partnership is neither an agreement nor a treaty but a dialogue." Following the shock of 9/11, right-wing political and business leaders have pushed the SPP agenda. Negotiating away from public scrutiny, they say it is the way to keep trade flowing between the United States, Canada and Mexico. You, Me and the SPP exposes the corporate agenda of the SPP and reveals that this secretive agreement is about much more than trade.

Opponents of this secretive 'dialogue' claim that it is undemocratic and a direct threat to the sovereignty of the three countries involved, Canada, the United States and Mexico; it bypasses their parliamentary systems and places control of regulatory integration in the hands of large corporations.

The national tour is sponsored by: the Communication, Energy and Paperworkers Union; the Canadian Union of Public Employees; the Public Service Alliance of Canada; the Council of Canadians; and the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives. The tour launched with a screening on Parliament Hill on Oct. 1.
