Second annual agribusiness case competition draws a dozen teams

Word has spread about the Cor Van Raay Agribusiness Case Competition co-hosted by Lethbridge College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. This year, 54 post-secondary students registered to participate in the two-day event Friday and Saturday.

Now in its second year, the 12 teams taking part include one each from Medicine Hat College, Lakeland College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan. The remaining nine teams are from Lethbridge and are comprised of both U of L students studying management and agricultural economics and Lethbridge College students studying business administration and agriculture.

“This case competition provides students with an opportunity to analyze issues facing the primary industry in southern Alberta and provide solutions to a panel of judges,” says Dr. Bob Boudreau, dean of the Faculty of Management at the U of L. “It also allows them to network with and learn from industry professionals.”

“This competition is a great experience for students to work with peers from not only different disciplines, but from different institutions as well, in a fast-paced learning environment,” says Dennis Sheppard, dean of the Centre for Applied Management at Lethbridge College. “The competition affords students a taste of their future careers in an ever-growing world where the business of agriculture is critical.”

The case competition grew out of a $5-million donation by local agricultural entrepreneur Dr. Cor Van Raay (LLD ’15). The competition is designed to give students the opportunity to expand their knowledge in agriculture and business on a global scale.

“We strive to educate students on agribusiness and its potential career paths. Agribusiness presents diverse career possibilities, regardless of whether someone has grown up on a farm or not,” says Boudreau.

The competition gets underway Friday evening with a networking event and talk by keynote speaker Dennis McKnight. McKnight, founder of The Innovators, has decades of experience in market research and analyzing data. On Saturday morning, the case competition gets underway in the Markin Hall Atrium at the U of L. Students will be given an agribusiness case from which they’ll analyze the relevant issues and come up with a strategy that they’ll present to a panel of three judges. The competition wraps up with a mixer, dinner and awards presentation at the Garden Court restaurant at Lethbridge College.

Fashion design and fine arts students to benefit from partnership between Lethbridge College and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge

Creative art and design students from across Canada can take advantage of a new partnership between Lethbridge College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Starting this fall, the agreement provides for an easy transfer from the college’s Fashion Design and Sustainable Production diploma program into a degree program in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Department of Theatre and Dramatic Arts.

The two-plus-two opportunity enables college students, who meet program criteria, to transfer to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and receive two years of credit for their previous work at the college. These students will enrol in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s post-diploma Bachelor of Fine Arts – Dramatic Arts program with a major in Technical/Design and finish their last two years of the degree program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Upon graduation, students have two credentials – a diploma from the College and a degree from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

The college’s Fashion Design and Sustainable Production is a one-of-a-kind program providing students with skills and experience needed to shape the apparel industry. The sustainability-focused curriculum provides valuable hands-on training and experience through research projects and creative challenges. After four semesters of courses, students have the option of participating in a 200-hour intensive internship, an unrivaled opportunity in western Canada.

“Our strong partnership with the university provides valuable educational opportunities for our students,” says Dennis Sheppard, Dean, Centre of Applied Management, Lethbridge College. “This two-plus-two agreement is an example of how the college is working collaboratively with a partner just across the river to lead and transform education in Alberta.”

”This agreement really adds value for students wanting to broaden their knowledge, skills and experience,” says Dr. Edward Jurkowski, Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. “Students have ample opportunities to get involved during all four years of their studies, given the enormous number of fine arts activities at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, College and in the community.”

At the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, Technical/Design majors combine academic studies with an immersive approach that prepares graduates for the ever-changing world of theatre, whether they want to work with established theatre companies or on their own artist plans.

Although this is the first agreement involving the Faculty of Fine Arts’ programs, Lethbridge College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge have several other two-plus-two program opportunities including:

· Agriculture Sciences Diploma – Plant and Soil Science or Animal Science into the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Studies

· Business Administration – General Business Diploma, Management Diploma, Marketing Diploma, or Accounting Diploma into the Bachelor of Management

· Child and Youth Care Diploma articulation into the Post-Diploma Bachelor of Health Sciences – Addictions Counselling (Extended)

· Computer Information Technology Diploma into the Bachelor of Management or Bachelor of Science - Computer Science

· Environmental Assessment and Restoration Diploma into the Bachelor of Science – Environmental Science

· Renewable Resource Management Diploma into the Bachelor of Science – Environmental Science

· Geomatics Engineering Technology Diploma into the Bachelor of Science with a concentration in Geographical Information Science

The brightest minds in business will be coming to Lethbridge's two post-secondary institutions this weekend to discuss the future of business education and solve some real world problems.

Lethbridge College is co-hosting the seventh annual Alberta Deans of Business Case Competition with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Management on Friday and Saturday.

This event brings teams of Alberta's best business students and deans of business schools from across the province to the City of Lethbridge, where the deans will hold their annual spring meeting and students will immerse themselves in a case study requiring them to develop solutions for real world business problems.

The event will also showcase business programs and opportunities at the college and university.

"Lethbridge College is thrilled to be hosting this dynamic event with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge," says Dennis Sheppard, dean of Applied Management at Lethbridge College. "This competition brings together the best business students in the province who will get great hands-on experience solving the kind of problem facing real businesses today.

"Like much of the work we do at the college, the Case Competition is a chance to put theory into practice," adds Sheppard. "We can't wait to watch the students get to work."

"We are very pleased to be involved with this event as a partner with Lethbridge College," says Dr. Bob Ellis, the dean of the U of L Faculty of Management "Sharing our facilities with students from across the province is something we are proud to do, alongside meeting with our colleagues to catch up on the latest trends in our profession."

The competition begins Friday morning when teams will receive the case and will be locked in "war rooms" from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to analyze and prepare a solution.

On Saturday, students will deliver 12-minute oral presentations before an audience and panel of industry professional judges in pursuit of cash prizes totaling $8,000.

The awards are offered thanks to a generous sponsorship by the Certified General Accountants' Association of Alberta (CGA Alberta).
