Ceremony I, Thursday, May 31

A respected Blood Tribe Elder, Pete Standing Alone is a teacher, cultural guide, and leader who has been an integral part of the U of L's commitment to Aboriginal education. Standing Alone is strong proponent of preserving the Blackfoot culture. His life has been chronicled in a National Film Board Documentary trilogy, spanning 1960 to 2010.

Patrick O'Farrell, Doctor of Science
Ceremony II, Thursday, May 31

One of the founders of modern molecular biology, Patrick O'Farrell's discoveries have had dramatic impacts on biological science and have made the use of proteins in medical diagnostics possible. He is a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California, San Francisco. Among other projects, he developed 2-D gel electrophoresis, which has become a routine technique for protein separation and analysis.

Jim Coutts, Doctor of Laws
Ceremony III, Friday, June 1

Jim Coutts is a lawyer, businessman, and former advisor to two Prime Ministers who has made significant contributions to Canada through his public service, conservation efforts and philanthropy, including the development and funding of Lester B. Pearson United World College. At the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Coutts has supported the Art collection and, most recently gifted his family homestead property near Nanton, Alberta.

Richard Davidson QC, Doctor of Laws
Ceremony IV, Friday, June 1

The 11th Chancellor of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Richard Davidson represented the institution with pride, emphasizing its connections with the community, and has served as president or chairman on many local organizations and charities. Davidson has received many awards and accolades, including Lethbridge Citizen of the Year and a place on the Alberta Venture 50 most Influential People list.

William H. Cade, Doctor of Laws
Fall Convocation, Saturday, October 13

President and chief ambassador of the U of L for ten years, Bill Cade oversaw the development of many initiatives including a rapid increase in students, growth in research, growth of graduate-level education, and the largest fundraising campaign to date. As well, Cade strengthened community relations at local, provincial, national, and international levels.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researcher Dr. Paul Hayes recruits students to work in his lab the way a mentor researcher first found him: by looking, listening and asking.

The chemistry equivalent of a hockey scout, Hayes says he looks for students with promise in different areas, and invites them to meet with him to talk about their research or academic progress and future plans.

This idea is not new to Hayes, who was on the road to dentistry when a researcher spoke with him.

"At Mount Allison ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, I was approached by one of my professors, Dr. Steve Westcott, who told me he'd been following my progress, and wanted me to work in his lab," recalls Hayes.

The flattering offer led to a steady job and a dramatic change in direction for Hayes, who turned his attention toward inorganic chemistry. After graduation he moved to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary for his doctoral degree and then to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California, Berkeley for a postdoctoral appointment – environments completely different from his tiny hometown of Shubenacadie, N.S.

Hayes, who has been at the U of L for four years, continues to develop his thriving independent research program which aims, among other things, to make catalysts that convert a chemical found in corn and beets into a biodegradable, environmentally friendly 'plastic-like' material called polylactide.

Thus far he has been extremely successful, having attracted more than $1.4M in funding from provincial and national agencies and published numerous articles in top tier journals. In addition, the young researcher has earned province-wide accolades, including the prestigious Alberta Ingenuity New Faculty Award.

Most recently, Hayes accepted a Distinguished Academic Early Career Award from the Confederation of Alberta Faculty Associations for his ongoing accomplishments and future research potential.

"I was thrilled to receive the award, since it comes from my peers and colleagues, and it will affect my group and research in a positive way," says Hayes.
"People like to be part of a winning team, and I am always looking for the right people. Maybe there's another wannabe dentist out there who doesn't yet know how exciting it can be to make new molecules.

Kinahan holds community focus
Brian Kinahan (BMgt '79) believes his time spent at the U of L was foundational for his career. "At the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ I gained the ability to think through problems and come up with solutions, to expand my mind and think beyond more than just one focus," he says.

Now the president and CEO of 1st Choice Savings, Kinahan has played an integral part in the growth of the credit union, which currently boasts a balance sheet in excess of $400 million. While helping to build a successful financial institution is something he is proud of, he is also grateful for the opportunities he has to serve his community.

"My goal is to continue building on the success of 1st Choice Savings, guiding it to be a viable and important part of the financial world that focuses on being a community-minded institution that cares about individuals."

Nancy Walker BMgt '82
Walker was awarded a Fellow of Chartered Accountants (FCA) from the Alberta Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Bill Neudorf BEd '88
"In memory: some of you may remember the little three-year-old girl who would come to class with her dad and spend the time colouring or playing with dolls. Her name was Bobbi Renee Neudorf. Bobbi later suffered from Crohn's disease through her time at university but finished a BSc in Occupational Therapy at the U of A and worked for three years in the QEII hospital in Grande Prairie. Bobbi succumbed to complications from the disease and passed away from a massive blood clot on Sept. 21, 2009. She was 25 years and two months old."

Pamela Zollner BEd '86
After graduating from the U of L, Zollner taught for a couple of years in Alberta before developing a taste for international travel by backpacking around Australia and New Zealand. Zollner incorporated this love for travel into her work by teaching in Singapore and India. Zollner completed her Master of Education in June 2008 and is currently teaching Grade 2 in Calgary.

Winner of the $10,000 Alberta Readers' Choice Award
Michael Davie (BMgt '94) won the inaugural $10,000 Alberta Readers' Choice Award for his first novel

Aaron Berg BSc '95, MSc '97
Dr. Aaron Berg was recognized as GeogNews' (News Digest of the Canadian Association of Geographers) Geographer of the Week. Berg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Guelph. He completed a BSc and an MSc degree in Geography at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, an MS in Geological Sciences at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Texas at Austin and his PhD in Earth System Science at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California, Irvine. His research focuses on hydrology and hydro-climate simulation. Areas of current research interest include: macro-scale modeling of hydrological states and fluxes; climate change and water resources; the spatial scaling of hydrological properties; and evaluating the impact of land use change on regional hydrologic cycles.

"I am currently working as the manager, Operations Accounting and Business Solutions for Enerplus Resources Fund and have been with Enerplus for a year and a half. Prior to that, I was with ConocoPhillips Canada and its predecessor companies for 15 years."

Altman's play FORTITUDE is part of Fuse 2010 (The Enbridge New Play Development Program) at Theatre Calgary. This heartwarming and hilarious play emerged from the 2008/09 FUEL Playwrights' Circle at Theatre Calgary.

Epp, former captain of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's hockey team, is now a constable with the Lethbridge Police Department.

Lethbridge College announced their 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients and recognized U of L alumnus Matthew Berrigan with the Rising Star Award. Since completing his education degree, Berrigan's rise as a teacher has been meteoric. Named best new teacher by the Foothills School Division for his work in Cayley, Berrigan is now a lead teacher in Turner Valley. The success of his teaching is reflected in his students' achievement results.

Following graduation in April 2009, Semenuik was married and travelled to France. She is now excited to begin her teaching career with École St. Mary School in Lethbridge, teaching French immersion kindergarten.

Kinley passes on the inspiration
After attending a presentation by guest speaker John Carr from Pixar, Brad Kinley (BFA '04) remembers telling a friend that the talk was life-changing.

"Seeing what he does and his approach to the whole process of character animation crystallized what I wanted to do," says Kinley.

Now, after being a key player in the design of Mass Effect 2, one of the most popular and highly rated games ever made for the Xbox platform, Kinley returned to the U of L this spring and gave a presentation to the next generation of new media students.

"I know how influential my exposure was to somebody actually working in the business," he says. "If I can lend a little knowledge or inspiration to someone else, hopefully it will help them the way it helped me."

Congratulations
Daniel Wong (BFA '03), Mary-Anne McTrowe (BFA '98) and Robyn Moody (BFA '00) have made the long list (Prairies and North region) for the 2010 Sobey Art Award.

Munton & Co. chartered accountants recently announced that Curtis Michaelis (BMgt '03) and Michael Quinton (BMgt '04) have been admitted to partnership.

Susie Martin (BEd '81), Judy Lynn Miller (BA '91, BEd '93), Matthew Berrigan (BA/BEd '06) and Tracy Inaba (BEd '92) were among 23 outstanding Alberta teachers selected to receive the prestigious 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award.

Sports Hall of Fame

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Chinooks women's basketball team (1970/1971) was inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame at this year's celebration. The team won the provincial and national championships and represented Lethbridge with pride.

Members of the team included: (Back row, L-R) Wilma Winter (coach), Dixie Dow, Linda Dogterom, Leona Voth, Minnie Van Dieren and Sharon Giduk (BA '73, BEd '75). (Front row, L-R) Marge Moore, Linda Voth, Rosemary Brodrick, Joan Cannady and Linda Dow (BEd '71).

Andrea Hlady (BEd'93) and Sharon Chmielewski (BEd'75) were also inducted at this year's celebration. Hlady was recognized in the athletes category. She was a two-time All-Canadian basketball player with the U of L Pronghorns. Chmielewski, recognized in the builder category, was honoured for building high school and high-level curling in Lethbridge with her work as an official, instructor and coach.

McGeorge highlights First Faculty exhibition

Pauline McGeorge was born on January 18, 1930, and grew up at her father's lumber mill near Placerville in Northern California. Her parents, Bart and Elsie, instilled a respect for and love of nature in her that remained a prominent theme throughout her life and artistic practice.

McGeorge completed her education at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California at Santa Barbara (receiving a Master of Fine Arts) and in 1966, she responded to a posting for a full-time art instructor made by the Lethbridge Junior College.

McGeorge moved to Lethbridge with her four children where she became the founding faculty member of what would become the Art Department at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. At that early stage the facilities were primitive, with no visual aids, art books or rooms designed for the needs of art instruction.

Over her 20-year career at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, McGeorge was extremely influential in the growth of the department and the founding of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Art Gallery. She was beloved by her students and other faculty members, many of who kept in contact with her through the years.

Upon her retirement in 1986, McGeorge moved to her property on Kootenay Lake where she developed extensive flower and vegetable gardens. She continued her art, drawing

inspiration from the simple beauty of nature. Pauline McGeorge died on July 2, 2008, at her home in the presence of her family.

Select pieces of Pauline McGeorge's work, held by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art Collection, will be on display in the Helen Christou Gallery as part of the exhibition First Faculty: Works by Early Members of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art Department, running from Mar. 20 to May 29, 2009.

Canadian artists have a history of drawing inspiration from the land. This has been true of Pauline, but unlike many others, she has not felt the need to seek out the exotic site. She has found the extraordinary in her own backyard, more specifically in her large vegetable and flower garden and the surrounding trees. Pauline's watercolours and pastels recall the rhythm of the university condensed into the wind-swept branch of a pine tree or a single head of cabbage.

U.S. Consul General delivers guest lecture

Having just witnessed a Whitehouse changover thought to be a seminal moment in American history, Consul General of the United States, Tom Huffaker, comes to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge as a guest lecturer today in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Library.

Huffaker, the Consul General of the United States of America for Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories will deliver a brief public lecture on recent developments in the U.S. government system at 1 p.m. in L1060.

Having been the U.S. Consul General in Calgary since August 2006, Huffaker focuses on energy and environment, agriculture and making sure that changes at the border enhance our security without burdening the movement of people and commerce.

He arrived in Calgary from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, where he was Deputy Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs. Previously, Huffaker served as Energy and Environment Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa (1999-2003), which followed a tour in Washington (1997-1999) as Chief Economist in the State Department's Office of Russian Affairs. He previously served in Moscow (1994-1996) in the Economic Section.

Educationally, Huffaker has a BA from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California, Davis and a JD from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California, San Francisco, Hastings College of the Law. He is a member of the California Bar and completed the masters-level International Economics Program at the U.S. Foreign Service Institute.

Ethnicity focus of event

The interdisciplinary conference on Ethnicity: Theory and Practice in the 21st Century took place at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge September 26-28.

Organized by Maria Ng, Department of English, and Michelle Helstein, Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, paper proposals at the conference came from countries as far away as Nigeria and Australia.

Ethnicity proved to be an important topic, based on the wide response, as participants in the conference included scholars from Slovenia, India and throughout Canada.

Nasrin Rahimieh, professor of Comparative Literature and the Maseeh Chair and director of Dr. Samuel M. Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California, Irvine was the keynote speaker as she presented The Question of Ethnicity in Modern Iranian Cultural History.

Panels at the conference included, Indigenous Cultures – Global Values, Ethnicity in Canada/North America and Gender and Ethnicity. Individual papers ranged from discussion of teaching modern Jewish literature to the ways Latina/o stereotypes are constructed in Hollywood comedies.

The sessions were all extremely well attended, energized by enthusiastic question periods following all 20 presented papers.

The conference was funded by the President's Office's Women Scholars Speaker Series, the Faculty of Arts & Science, Faculty of Education, the School of Health Sciences, the Departments of English, History, Kinesiology and Physical Education, and was ably assisted by Briana Struss and Brittany Thompson.
