The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Senate has approved the granting of five Honorary Degrees at the 2012 Spring and Fall Convocation ceremonies.

Pete Standing Alone, Doctor of Laws
Ceremony I, Thursday, May 31

A respected Blood Tribe Elder, Pete Standing Alone is a teacher, cultural guide, and leader who has been an integral part of the U of L's commitment to Aboriginal education. Standing Alone is strong proponent of preserving the Blackfoot culture. His life has been chronicled in a National Film Board Documentary trilogy, spanning 1960 to 2010.

Patrick O'Farrell, Doctor of Science
Ceremony II, Thursday, May 31

One of the founders of modern molecular biology, Patrick O'Farrell's discoveries have had dramatic impacts on biological science and have made the use of proteins in medical diagnostics possible. He is a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of California, San Francisco. Among other projects, he developed 2-D gel electrophoresis, which has become a routine technique for protein separation and analysis.

Jim Coutts, Doctor of Laws
Ceremony III, Friday, June 1

Jim Coutts is a lawyer, businessman, and former advisor to two Prime Ministers who has made significant contributions to Canada through his public service, conservation efforts and philanthropy, including the development and funding of Lester B. Pearson United World College. At the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Coutts has supported the Art collection and, most recently gifted his family homestead property near Nanton, Alberta.

Richard Davidson QC, Doctor of Laws
Ceremony IV, Friday, June 1

The 11th Chancellor of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Richard Davidson represented the institution with pride, emphasizing its connections with the community, and has served as president or chairman on many local organizations and charities. Davidson has received many awards and accolades, including Lethbridge Citizen of the Year and a place on the Alberta Venture 50 most Influential People list.

Fall Convocation, Saturday, October 13

President and chief ambassador of the U of L for ten years, Bill Cade oversaw the development of many initiatives including a rapid increase in students, growth in research, growth of graduate-level education, and the largest fundraising campaign to date. As well, Cade strengthened community relations at local, provincial, national, and international levels.

Budget Update and Salary Discussions
January 12, 2010

Welcome to the New Year and a new semester! I hope the Christmas break provided you with an opportunity to relax and recharge yourself and to connect with family and friends.

I know that these are nervous times within our institution and so this letter is intended to provide you with a clear picture of what I know with respect to our budgetary situation.

While there is still no new communication from the Government of Alberta regarding the level of base operating grant our ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is likely to receive, there have been discussions with employee group executive committees that we would like to communicate to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community.

In my letter to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ on December 9, 2009, I mentioned that there were ongoing conversations with employee groups to discuss options that would produce some flexibility within our financial picture. At that time I had mentioned the leadership shown by the members of senior administration (President, Vice-Presidents, Associate Vice-Presidents, Executive Directors, Deans, and Associate Deans) who had agreed to accept a 0 % salary increase (0 % cost of living adjustment (COLA) and 0 % merit & career progress increments) for the 2010-2011 year.

To date we have also been in discussions with the APO Executive, Exempt Support Staff and the AUPE Executive Committees to discuss the possibility of a salary freeze to assist with the budget shortfalls. Exempt Support Staff have, in principle with conditions, accepted a salary freeze for July 1, 2010-2011 compensation year (0% to COLA and 0% Merit) and discussions are ongoing with the APO and AUPE employee groups. I greatly appreciate the willingness of those employee groups to explore the possibility of a salary freeze as I know how difficult this will be in the current economic environment.

As we move forward I want to highlight the guiding principles the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has been following while working with the various employee groups:

1. Every attempt must be made to try and avoid involuntary lay-offs which obviously have a dramatic impact on the individuals laid off, and their families, but also to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as a whole.

2. In exchange for an agreement to freeze salaries the parties agree on a set of conditions in which there is an assurance, or guarantee, of no involuntary layoffs.

3. The agreements have been proposed on the assumption of a 0% change to the provincial operating grant.

4. Finally, every effort would be made to minimize the impact on the current compensation structure for the upcoming budget year and beyond.

I would also like to thank the members of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Budget Committee for their continued discussions and deliberations in formulating the operating budget. The Budget Committee has reviewed and listened to all the budget unit presentations and is now taking this information and putting together the budget for recommendation to the Board of Governors. It is hoped that we will soon hear from the Provincial Government on what our operating grant will be for 2010-11 so that we can make informed budget decisions.

Our 2009-2013 Strategic Plan is leading us forward and as it states, we value the efforts of our staff and encourage dialogue and discussions in order to achieve our strategic priorities.

Our ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is a strong community and we will use this strength and commitment to move us through these more than challenging times. I will continue to keep you informed as new information becomes available.

Wow – what a year this has been! Our 40th anniversary year was filled with plenty of excitement, but I can honestly say our 41st year is proving to be truly transformational.
We continue to build a comprehensive institution by expanding our horizons into the world of graduate studies while maintaining our tradition in undergraduate education. This year, 8,000 students from around the world call our campuses in Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton home. Our student body has grown by 50 per cent in the last 10 years, phenomenal growth among post-secondary institutions in Canada. Despite this growth, we have remained true to who we are – student-focused, research-intensive and grounded in liberal education. Our graduates face the world with confidence – not only in their educations, but in their abilities to succeed in their careers.
The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is built on a commitment to the individual student and to providing each student with the most vital and engaging learning environment in the country. We are a university that sees teaching as a core activity and a university that has developed a reputation as a major research institution. In what is being called the biggest research hire for a university in Canada, this fall, Dr. Bruce McNaughton joined our Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience team as the inaugural Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) Polaris Award recipient. The award is a 10-year, $10 million research grant that will ultimately result in $20 million through matching funding.
Our centres of research excellence provide opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students that are second to none. New facilities, such as the Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building and the future Markin Hall, will create additional research space and accommodate future student needs. Over the last two years, we have had $147 million worth of new construction on campus. To date, five projects are complete and two more are under construction and set to open in 2009/2010. A key part of the U of L's campus infrastructure, our signature Arthur Erickson building, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall, is also being preserved through an $18.5 million renovation investment.
I am also pleased to report that we set out to raise $20 million from the community through our Legacy of Leadership Campaign and we actually raised $35 million, an achievement made possible in part through the support of the Government of Alberta's Access to the Future Fund. The largest percentage of the money raised went directly to establishing scholarships and bursaries for our students. I want to thank alumnus Dan Laplante (BMgt '88) for serving as Chair of the campaign – he did an outstanding job of motivating support and we sincerely appreciate the enthusiasm he brought to the campaign.
And last, but definitely not least, I would like to highlight two U of L students who shone brightly on national and international stages this year. Theo Tams, a music and psychology student, won the Canadian Idol competition, and hammer thrower Jim Steacy competed for Canada at the Beijing Olympics.
So why rethink? Because we want you to "rethink" what you thought you knew about the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.
