Horns celebrate athletes of the year

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorn Athletics hosted its annual Blue and Gold Banquet, Friday, Mar. 30, to honour the outstanding athletes in athletic performance and academic achievement.

Over 260 athletes, administrators, and special guests were in attendance for the supper and awards ceremony, with former Pronghorn Daryl Moore serving as guest speaker.

The Award winners are as follows:

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

In only her second season as a Pronghorn, Crystal Patterson led her team to heights that have never been seen by the program. She built off a solid freshman year to become one of the premier goaltenders in Canada West this and was named a Canada West First Team All-Star for her efforts.

The Calgary native backstopped the Pronghorns women's hockey team to its best season in school history and was in goal for all 14 of her team's wins; second most of any goalie in the conference. She also led the conference in minutes played, saves and shutouts, with six. The six shutouts were the third most in a single season in Canada West history. Patterson was also ranked fourth in goals-against-average with a 2.01 GAA and her 0.928 save percentage was third best in Canada West.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

In a rarity this year, there are co-male athletes of the year as Jeff Nicol and Ryan Thornley went hand-in-hand this season as they led their team to its best finish at the conference championship in 12 years.

The Horns men's swim team hadn't finished among the top four in the conference team standings since 2000 and both Nicol and Thornley were integral parts of the relay teams that earned valuable team points.

At the conference meet, Nicol led the way with three medals, earning a silver medal in the 200-metre breaststroke and two bronze medals in the 50- and 100-metre breaststroke.

Thornley led the way at the CIS Championships, earning the 'Horns top finish and setting a new school record in the process. Thornley finished sixth in the 50-metre fly and broke an eight-year-old school record.

Both represented the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ at the Canadian Olympic trials this past weekend, with Nicol qualifying for the 'A' final in the 200-metre breaststroke, finishing eighth.

PRESIDENT'S AWARD

For the second time in her Pronghorns' career, Megan Bach of the women's hockey program received the President's Award, given to the student athlete with the highest academic standing at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Bach achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA, while balancing her large commitment to the team.

TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD - Presented to the team with the highest academic standing.

The women's swim team received the team Academic award with a combined GPA of 3.16

Latrace, Medoruma earn accolades

It hasn't been a great start for either the Pronghorns men's or women's soccer teams but there have been some solid individual performances thorugh the first two weeks of the Canada West season. On Tuesday, Horns Athletics announced its first set of Pronghorn Athletes of the Week.

Sherry Latrace – Women's Soccer

While the Pronghorn women's soccer team dropped its first four games, fourth-year defender Sherry Latrace has been a solid presence in the Horns backline.

After playing as a forward her first three seasons, Latrace has made a seamless transition to the Horns' defensive core that was overhauled over the off-season.

The Brooks, Alta. native did an exceptional job this past weekend turning away Calgary Dino attacks both in Calgary on Saturday and during the 'Horns' home opener on Sunday.

Matt Medoruma – Men's Soccer

Fourth-year midfielder Matt Medoruma has been a constant presence at both ends of the field for the 'Horns thus far this season.

This past weekend, Medoruma was in the middle of virtually all of the 'Horns' attacks versus the Calgary Dinos, with his pace and tenacity causing fits for the Dino defense all weekend.

Saturday, Medoruma registered one shot and set up the 'Horns' lone goal in a 2-1 loss. On Sunday he was credited with four shot attempts in the 'Horns' 1-0 loss.

Both teams are back in action this weekend with the Horns hosting ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Victoria on Saturday and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of the Freser Valley on Sunday at the Community Sports Stadium. The women play at noon and the men at 2 p.m. both days.

Pronghorns excel as all-canadians

Every year, the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) honours student athletes who excel in sport at the university level, while maintaining an 80 per cent average in ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, as Academic All-Canadians. Recently, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge recognized the achievement of 41 outstanding student-athletes, who achieved Academic All-Canadian Honours. This number represents over 22 per cent of our student-athlete body and an increase of six athletes from last year, a remarkable number signifying the importance our program places on ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Following is the list of Pronghorn Athletes who are recognized as CIS Academic All-Canadians for 2008-09.

O'Brien earns second straight Horn honour

With soccer season in full swing, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorn Athletes of the Week once again comes from the Pronghorns soccer programs.

Senior defender Michael O'Brien grabbed his second consecutive Subway Athlete of the Week award after another solid weekend. O'Brien displayed great leadership skills and was a defensive stalwart for the Horns as they dropped a pair of Canada West starts on the west coast.

Despite losing both games, O'Brien was the Horns' best player and registered the club's only goal of the weekend, Saturday night in a 3-1 loss to Trinity Western.

The biological science major also registered one shot on goal in a 1-0 loss Friday night in Vancouver versus the UBC Thunderbirds.

Sherry Latrace, a second-year student out of Brooks, Alta., picked up the women's nod after a hard-working effort in a pair of weekend losses.

Latrace worked tirelessly over the weekend in back-to-back 3-0 losses to Fraser Valley and Victoria respectively. Creating a number of good scoring chances, she was pegged as the club's hardest working player.
