Faculty of Fine Arts/Medalta Residency rewarding for first uLethbridge participant

Thanks to a new partnership between the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Medalta Potteries in Medicine Hat, third-year Art students now have the opportunity to apply for a one-month intensive ceramics residency. The first recipient of the Faculty of Fine Arts Medalta Residency, Grace Wirzba, spent the month of May in the 150-acre Historic Clay District.

This was the fourth year that Medalta has hosted undergrad students as part of the International Artists in Residence Program. The program provides opportunity for students from various institutions to spend a month in an immersive residency environment to create a much broader dialogue amongst ceramic programs across Canada. Medalta provides the studio experience including 24-hour access, a 20-square metre personal studio, facilitated access to the entire Historic Clay District site, firings, use of shop glazes and possible exhibition opportunities in their on-site contemporary art galleries. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge provided a $1,000 stipend for travel and living expenses.

The residency is open to a third-year student returning to their studies in the fall. Wirzba became the lucky first recipient by being in the right place at the right time.

Medalta provides the studio experience including 24-hour access, a 20-square metre personal studio, facilitated access to the entire Historic Clay District site, firings, use of shop glazes and possible exhibition opportunities in their on-site contemporary art galleries.

“I heard Jenna Stanton (Medalta curator) talk in Art Now about two years ago and she talked about Medalta,” says Wirzba. “I thought it was really cool, so I just sat on that idea, and then last year I was introduced to Jenna again. I told her I was interested in Medalta and had heard a lot about the residencies. (Art faculty) Annie Martin got the ball rolling on the opportunity for the U of L. I think they were already working on getting it started so when a student showed interest they were thrilled!’”

In the future, the residency will involve an application process for students. The residencies are in high demand, so while it may not be an annual opportunity, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will accept any chance they get to send a student.

“I was really lucky to just be a keener that showed interest,” admits Wirzba. “I was super lucky!”

Wirzba was somewhat nervous leading up to the residency as ceramics are not a primary area of her art practice, and others were coming from institutions with specific ceramics programs and experience.

“Coming in green to the technical components of ceramics influenced my experience immensely,” shares Wirzba. “I think it made for a very positive experience. Learning from my fellow undergrad residents, as well as long-term residents at the Shaw Centre was extremely rewarding and incredibly fun. It was a constant learning curve and my knowledge on the subject grew about 300 percent by the end of May, though I’ve only still brushed the surface of what there is to know in ceramics.”

“One of the most important aspects of the residency was forming connections with my peers in universities and colleges across the country, as well as internationally exhibiting artists. Being able to have conversation and create discourse on contemporary ceramics and art at an undergraduate level with these peers was valuable and so important for me.”

Wirzba focused on simple sculptural forms and glaze mixing and application.

“Most of my work was hand built mid-fire sculpture that I worked with in an installation context,” continues Wirzba. “At the end of the residency, the five undergrads put together a small pop up exhibition in the ‘bone yard’ behind Medalta. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of installing my new ceramic pieces on this site. Site specific installation is exactly what I am interested in at the moment and it was an incredibly rewarding opportunity to get to install work in this unique and challenging location.”

Wirzba will be displaying her ceramic creations on the 8th level exhibition wall in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Centre for the Arts from August 28 through September 8. Collaboration of sight and sound brings together fine arts faculty from different disciplines

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art faculty member Annie Martin found a renewed passion for history and music through a fortuitous collaboration with Dr. Janet Youngdahl of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Department of Music. The result of years of research and creative collaboration came together in adoration, open at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) until April 23.

Inspired by the Carnegie Library space at SAAG, Martin was developing a proposal for an installation exhibition when a chance conversation at a convocation tea brought together Martin and Youngdahl who realized their areas of research weren’t so different. Martin, whose creative practice has a focus on sound and installation work, was already envisioning a sound installation in the Carnegie Library when she ran into Youngdahl.

“Living in Lethbridge I’ve had the luxury of years to think about what was meaningful to me about that space,” says Martin. “I was inspired by the idea of the library, as a site of archive, and text, and reading. But I couldn’t find a vector in. I’d been working with sound for a number of years so I felt strongly that it needed to be a sound installation.”

Martin’s early ideas included an empty space painted with sound.

“I explored the idea of sound as colour, almost like a textile, woven strands of colour. I hoped to make this ethereal sound installation with tones. It had to be musical tones because they have a strong sense of colour.”

Starting as a very abstract idea, Martin knew intuitively that the sounds needed to be vocal in order to create an inhabitation of the space.

“Voice, even if it’s a recording suggests the presence of a subject, a being, a person,” continues Martin.

It was in searching for the right vocal tones that Martin and Youngdahl’s worlds collided. Martin mentioned her proposal, and Youngdahl, who studied the work of Saint Hildegard of Bingen and her compositions of sacred music, began enthusiastically asking questions. Martin had already explored the idea of vocal chants and deliberately randomized sounds as part of the SAAG exhibition so the ideas quickly meshed. Youngdahl went from being a passive participant by providing her voice, to an active partner in contributing to the overall project.

Martin and Youngdahl pared down the work of Hildegard of Bingen to one chant, “Ode to Divine Wisdom.” Youngdahl recorded the chant in the Faculty of Fine Arts’ Studio One recording facility in September 2016 as well as recording the most important notes and tones from the chant to create extended, single held notes for Martin to work with in her deconstructive compositional practice.

Distributed over four channels, the recordings provide the presence of four ‘voices’ coming from four corners of the room.

“Sound feels like it is coming from all over the space,” explains Martin. “The movement of tones and voices over the space create patterns in a non-musical way, asking questions about the relationship of tone and repetition. Voices going back and forth, a kind of call and response between the four channels.”

Although originally envisioned in an empty space, Martin soon realized the space wasn’t going to be empty – people will be there. She thought of painting high gloss colour panels that allow the viewer to see their own reflection.

“Like looking into a pool of water. You see yourself, not in a clear way, but enough to be aware of your own presence in the space.”

Eventually images were asking to be present as well.

“There has to be a visual presence which pairs with Hildegard’s message of imagery – but still abstract. Not in a representational or illustrative way.”

Martin wanted visitors to have something visual to reflect on while they listened to the sound installation. She created a series of 12 painted panels that reference diverse traditions of sacred art and link back to Hildegard’s life and music.

While the exhibition is open, the hour long recording repeats in a loop. In March 2017, the recordings were turned off for a special performance by Youngdahl and her vocal ensemble “Sweet Breath” at a lecture recital, “Singing in the Sacred Space.”

“A point that Janet and I really connected on was that vocalization can be a form of prayer in itself,” continues Martin. “I was interested in the idea of ‘opening.’ The idea that there is something kind of radical about opening, whether that’s opening the heart, opening your mouth, opening oneself, that is an invitation to experience something that is outside of the ordinary sense of functional purpose. This is where the spiritual experience resides. In this desire to open.”

Art and music connect people – through artistic collaborations such as this, and by connecting the artist or performer to the audience.

“I said to Janet that I am in such awe of this practice you have, and she said, ‘There’s no separation between the singer and the person who’s listening. By listening, you are participating in the singing.’ If one is singing, all are singing. There’s an interconnectedness of people through music.”

Martin speaks highly of her time working with Youngdahl, and the new inspiration it brought her.

“I’m hoping really sincerely that we can find a way to collaborate some more in the future. I feel like I’m just getting started.”

Once again this spring, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Department of Art opens its studios and workshops to welcome the public.

On April 23-24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, the Art Student Open House will be held.

"We want people to experience the diversity and excellence of work by students in art courses," says Annie Martin, art faculty advisor to the project, which is largely organized by art students. "Visitors experience artwork in a wide array of media, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, print, installation, multimedia, and video, by both undergraduate and Master of Fine Arts students. This is a great opportunity to see work by the next generation of artists."

The open house also provides an opportunity for the public to talk with students about their art practices and take a look at the excellent art facilities. Students, faculty and technical staff are on hand to answer questions and people can get guided tours on a drop-in basis by stopping at the welcome table near the stairs on the 8th level of the Centre for the Arts. School tours can be arranged by contacting Nicole Hembroff (Nicole.hembroff@uleth.ca)

The awards for excellence in Art studio and Art History/Museum Studies will be held at 4:30 p.m. in W817 on Apr. 24.

"Join us to celebrate the achievements of our students as we announce the recipients of a number of awards for excellence," says Martin. "Everyone is welcome."

Dr. Heidi MacDonald (History) received an award for the best English-language academic article deemed to make an original and scholarly contribution to the field of women's and gender history by the Canadian Committee on Women's History. Her article, Who Counts? Nuns, Work and the Census of Canada, was published in a recent issue of Histoire Sociale/Social History. Reviewers indicated that MacDonald produced "…an impressive and insightful piece of work on the various ways in which women religious (nuns) have been excluded or significantly undercounted in the Canadian census."

Taras Polataiko's (Art) painting was on view at the National Museum of Ukraine in Kyiv. The work was part of an international exhibition curated by Kateryna Botanova.

Annie Martin's (Art) installation Untitled (horizon) was exhibited in the PAVED Arts main gallery in Saskatoon. A critical text was also commissioned to accompany this exhibition.

Dana Cooley (New Media) has a video work in the group show, A Century of Artists' Films, at the Theatr Mwldan in Wales. Curated by Mike Cousin in partnership with Oriel Mwldan, the show runs until July 2.

Three ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge teams recently walked to raise money to End MS, totalling an impressive $6,762.05 that was donated to the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. The team from the Faculty of Education, captained by
Dr. Cathy Campbell, and consisting of Dr. Robin Bright, Dr. Noella Piquette-Tomei and Dr. Cynthia Chambers raised $2,935. The team from Administration, captained by Dr. Mike Mahon, and consisting of Maureen Mahon, Laurel Corbiere, Trish Jackson, Virginia Wishart and Robin Hopkins raised $2,725. The team from the Faculty of Management, captained by Dr. Lori Kopp, and consisting of Dr. Robert Ellis, Dr. Sameer Deshpande, Dr. Brian Dobing, Dr. Pam Loewen, Joan Kendall, Diane Boyle and Steve Craig raised $1,102.05.

Clark Ferguson, the U of L's chief information officer, presented the keynote address at the Futures in it – Collaboration Western Canada Academy Conference in Calgary recently. Ferguson's address was titled Business Experience – Applied to Post Secondary at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Dr. Austin Mardon (BA'85) received an honorary doctor of laws from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta at its Spring Convocation ceremonies. Mardon, an inspiring advocate for the mentally ill, is a member of the Order of Canada and a past recipient of the CM Hincks Award, the highest award given by the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Three members of the U of L iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machines) team are travelling to Stanford ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ in California to attend the 5th International Meeting on Synthetic biology. The sold-out conference attracts researchers from around the world who are working in the growing field of synthetic biology.

Dr. David Clearwater's (New Media) essay, What Defines Video Game Genre? Thinking about Genre Study after the Great Divide, was published in the Spring 2011 issue of Loading... (a Canadian journal covering videogames and interactive entertainment).

Dr. Josephine Mills (director/curator U of L Art Gallery) has recently been named president of the Canadian Art Museum Directors' Organization.

Dagmar Dahle's (Art) work was included in the exhibition ANIMAL, appearing at Museum London in Ontario.

Loralee Sand Edwards' (BFA '05) exhibition iGallery: curated auto-paparazzi (Self-Portraiture in a Digital Age) is in the Main Gallery of the Bowman Arts Centre until July 10.

Congratulations to the group of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge alumni who was successful in earning Lethbridge City Council seats in the recent municipal election. The group includes Lethbridge mayor Rajko Dodic (BASc '78), and aldermanic members Jeff Carlson (BFA '92), Liz Iwaskiw (BASc '77), Joe Mauro (BASc '83) and Bridget (Pastoor) Mearns (BA '95).

Dr. Josephine Mills (U of L Art Gallery director/curator) presented, Deaccessioning: The Root of All Scandal, as part of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery's Art Appreciation series Articulations III: Scandals, Scoundrels, Capers, and Cons.

Dr. David Renter's (Music) quartet performed in Southminster United Church's Jazz Vespers series.

Annie Martin's (Art) sound installation, Listening Space, opened Nov. 5 at Contrary Projects Gallery in Regina. The installation is a version of the Listening Room Series Martin has developed since 2006 and uses lo-fi audio technology deployed to "open" the architecture of the space, creating an unfiltered audio environment.

Emily Luce's (New Media) exhibition Parallel Park (Lab Space) is in the Helen Christou Gallery until January 14.

A distinguished group of alumni from the Faculty of Education recently received nomination for the Edwin Parr Award in Zone 6. Awarded by the Alberta School Board Association (ASBA), the Edwin Parr Awards single out professionals in their first year of teaching for their talent, commitment to students and contribution to education. Shelley Kirkvold (BA/BEd '09, Catholic Central High School, Lethbridge), Qian Zhang (BSc '04, BEd '09, DA Ferguson Middle School, Taber), Grant Bertamini (BEd '09, Fleetwood Bawden Elementary, Lethbridge), Alli Martin (BA/BEd '09, Stavely Elementary), Travis Curliss (BA/BEd '09, Crescent Heights High School, Medicine Hat) and Donna Jean Wilde (BA/BEd '09, Magrath High School) all earned nominations.

Rumi Graham (librarian) defended her PhD thesis, A Multiple Case Study Exploration of Undergraduate Subject Searching, at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto. Her thesis looks into subject searching and information literacy in the undergraduate context.

Taras Polataiko (Art) had new work displayed in the exhibition, Video Lounge, at the Toronto International Art Fair, Oct. 28 – Nov. 1.

Janet Youngdahl (Music) directed and sang in a staged production of the Ordo Virtutum, a 12th Century Music Drama by Hildegard von Bingen, at the Cleveland Institute/Case Western Collegium. She also presented a paper entitled, Identifying Musical Gestures in Bach Choruses: An approach for Singers and Conductors, at the Alberta Choral Federation Symposium in Red Deer.

Lisa Doolittle (Theatre & Dramatic Arts) presented, Negotiating First Nations rights in Canada – What does dancing have to do with it?, at a Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs special session.

Gail Hanrahan (Theatre & Dramatic Arts) directed the world premiere of, In Flanders Fields, at Lunchbox Theatre in Calgary.

Dr. Arlan Schultz (Music) just returned from Drepung Gomang Institute in Louisville, Ky., where he met with eight Tibetan Buddhist Monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery in southwest India. Schultz has been conducting research into the spectral content of Tibetan ritual music and was able to record 12 different ritual chants in a special recording session set up by the monastery. The chants will be used in a new electro-acoustic work for 8-channel computer processed audio.

Dr. Ken Allan (Art) presented his paper, Marshall McLuhan, N.E. Thing Co. Ltd., and the Counter-Environment, at a Nov. 25-27 conference at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto. His talk was associated with the exhibition, Traffic: Conceptual Art in Canada, 1965-1980, currently on view in Toronto. He also spoke at the regular session of the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs.

Katie Klingvall (BFA '04) is off to Macau, China to work in the Wardrobe Department for Dragone Theater Company.
