Schell appointed to new role

Darren Schell has been appointed the interim associate vice-president (information technology) effective March 1, 2022. Schell follows Mark Humphries in this role, who recently announced he has accepted a position at another organization in Ontario.

Schell has most recently served as the chief technology officer at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ since June 2016. He has been with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ since 2002, beginning as a programmer/analyst in the Registrar's Office where he supported the student information system. He has moved progressively within the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, taking on new responsibilities within his roles as information security manager (2007-2012), director, Transformation Solutions (2012-2014), associate executive director, IT Services (2014-2016), and chief technology officer (2016-2022).

"Darren brings a varied skill set to the position," says Nancy Walker, vice-president (finance & administration). "He has extensive experience within Information Technology Services, including project management, IT governance, policy/procedure development, change management, cybersecurity, and oversight of IT infrastructure, enterprise applications, web services, and client support. He also represented IT Services on the Destination Project Technical Committee and oversaw the network design/deployment and audio/visual commissioning in the Science Commons.

Darren is a graduate of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, with a Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) degree in 2001. He has also achieved various professional development certificates related to his responsibilities.

Long Service & Retirement Recognition Ceremony

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is holding its annual Long Service Awards and Retirement Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, May 9 at 1 p.m. in the Students' Union Ballrooms.

A total of 103 employees, including 20 retiring employees and those who have completed 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of service, will be honoured.

All employees are invited to the ceremony and reception to honour the award recipients listed below. The reception will include light refreshments.

Wellness Week begins Monday at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, with a number of events designed to bring health and wellness issues to the forefront of everyone's mind.

Following is a list of Wellness Week activities, beginning with Monday's mini health fair at Andy's Place (AH100).

Monday, Apr. 26 – mini health fair – Andy's Place – 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – exhibits will include non-fasting cholesterol and glucose testing (Health Centre); how to set up your workspace (Ergonomic Connections); Smoking Cessation (AB Health Services), Healthy Recipes and Eating for Weight Loss (Diane Britton, Registered Dietitian); Straighten Up AB Stretching Program (Mcleod Family Chiropractic); find out what's involved in a personal fitness consultation (U of L Fitness Centre); Back care and stretching (Jon Doan, Kinesiology).
Light refreshments will be available. Pick up a wellness passport to enter draw prizes and make sure and register for the Bee Heart Smart challenge as well.

Avoiding identity theft

In this increasingly digital world, sharing information online can be a risky prospect. Just how safe is your identity and what can you do to protect your interests?

Internal Auditor Sonya von Heyking and Darren Schell of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Information Security Office have the answers. On Wednesday, Feb. 3, they will present Identity Theft: Knowledge and Prevention as part of the Lunch and Learn series on campus.

Beginning at noon in D634, the presentation will discuss topics such as:

- Why the bank machine can be part of the problem

- Liability differences between credit and debit cards

- Recognizing and avoiding e-mail scams

- How to know if you're a victim

- File-sharing programs that are sharing more than you think

Open to everyone, you are invited to bring your lunch and learn about the many methods used by criminals to obtain your personal information, the impact that their fraudulent activities can have on you, and some tips to protect yourself from Identity Theft.

Questions and discussion following the presentation are welcome.
