Horns add defensive help

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's hockey team has dipped into the Ontario talent pool for a pair of defencemen.

Horns' head coach Greg Gatto continues to revamp the defensive core of the men's hockey team, adding Tim Campbell and David McMullen, defensemen who each have Ontario Hockey League (OHL) experience.

Campbell, a native of Thornhill, ON, joins the 'Horns after finishing his junior career with the Woodstock Slammers of the Maritime Hockey League (MHL). In 45 games as a 20 year-old, Campbell registered 17 goals and 55 assists and was named the top defenseman in the MHL.

"I am excited and really looking forward to coming to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge," says Campbell. "I fell in love with the city when I came out for my visit and can't wait to get started with the Pronghorns."

During his only season in Woodstock, he helped the Slammers win a MHL Championship and a berth in the RBC Championship. At the national championship tournament, Campbell registered five points in six games as the Slammers lost in the final to the Penticton Vees.

Prior to joining the Slammers, Campbell played three seasons in the OHL with the Guelph Storm, compiling eight goals and 39 assists in 166 career games.

"Tim was a pretty sought after guy and he showed great offensive upside last year in Woodstock," says Gatto. "He's a right shot that can quarterback our power play and he played three seasons with a great organization in the OHL."

Also making the trip out west is David McMullen, who played with his hometown Kingston Voyageurs in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). The team captain for the past two seasons, McMullen registered 22 goals and 104 assists in 189 career games. In addition to playing four seasons with the Voyageurs, McMullen played one season in the OHL with the Niagara IceDogs.

"David is another right shot defenseman with good offensive instincts," says Gatto. "He was the captain in Kingston the past two seasons and it is always nice to add a guy with good leadership qualities like that."

Gatto continues to work on rounding out this year's recruiting class. The Horns will open the 2012-2013 Canada West season by hosting the Calgary Dinos in the front half of a home-and-home series on Thursday, Sept. 27.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's hockey team is excited to announce three new recruits for the 2012-13 Canada West season.

After the graduation of six players from last year's team, head coach Greg Gatto has his work cut out for him to fill the gaps left behind but is excited to add three quality Western Hockey League graduates, goaltender Damien Ketlo and defencemen Hayden Rintoul and Cason Machacek.

With the departure of five-year starting goalie and 2009-10 second team Canada West All-Star Scott Bowles, goaltending was a high priority in Gatto's recruiting this off-season. With the commitment of former Lethbridge Hurricane goaltender Damien Ketlo, he believes the Horns have picked up one of the best graduating goalies from the WHL.

"Damien is a guy to take over the number one position," says Gatto. "He was the Hurricanes' MVP last season and he wants to be a big part of our program. He gives us a bigger goaltender who plays the puck well, and it's his job to lose."

Ketlo is a Fort Fraser, B.C. native who played four seasons in the WHL and made 160 appearances over his career with the Regina Pats and the Hurricanes. This past season, Ketlo made 47 appearances, while sporting a 3.60 goals-against-average and a solid 0.902 save percentage.

At the end of his season, Ketlo joined the Colorado Eagles of the ECHL, making 3 appearances, including a shutout victory in his pro debut.

Rintoul and Machacek played parts of two seasons together with the Kootenay Ice. Machacek is a Lethbridge product who returns home to suit up for the Pronghorns after finishing his junior career with the Seattle Thunderbirds. Prior to being traded to Seattle, Machacek played parts of two seasons with his hometown Hurricanes and began his WHL career with the Ice. A physical, stay-at-home defenseman, Machacek suited up in 245 career WHL games in four seasons, accumulating 6 goals and 22 assists, while amassing 536 penalty minutes.

"Cason is a hometown boy who wants to come back and make our program better," says Gatto. "We needed a physical defenseman and that's exactly what Cason is and he has more upside than a lot of people give him credit for."

Rintoul, in addition to playing with the Ice, finished his WHL career with the Victoria Royals where he served as the team captain and set career highs this season in goals and points with 17 and 51 respectively. In 260 career games, Rintoul amassed 36 goals and 108 assists and won a WHL Championship in 2011 with Ice.

"Hayden is an offensive-minded defenseman and gives us that puck moving ability that is so important in today's game," says Gatto. "He won a WHL championship and was a captain, which are always qualities we like to add to our dressing room."

Price, Moore earn Pronghorn awards

Key games brought out big efforts from Stephanie Price and Dustin Moore this past weekend, earning the duo recognition as Subway Pronghorn Athletes of the Week.

Price and the women's basketball Horns faced a must-win scenario against ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary Dinos this past weekend and she responded with a stellar effort in the Horns' 93-84 victory.

A third-year point guard, Price had a career night with 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting as the Horns clinched a spot in the Canada West playoffs. Price also collected eight assists, five rebounds and five steals as the Horns survived a complicated wildcard system to reach the post-season tournament.

Price finished fourth in conference scoring over the regular season, averaging 15.5 points per game. She also led the Canada West conference in assists with 4.9 per contest.

The Horns will now travel to face ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Regina Cougars, Feb. 25-27, in the first round of playoffs.

The Horns men's hockey team also needed to win to maintain momentum as it charges toward a Canada West playoff berth. Team captain Moore led the way with four goals as the club swept the visiting Regina Cougars and kept pressure on both ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan for the final playoff position in Canada West.

On Friday night, Moore scored the first and third goals of the game, in a nine-minute span, to open the first period and propel the Horns to a 4-1 win. He was also a plus-2 and recorded an astonishing14 shots on goal.

The next night he opened the scoring again with a power play goal and picked up his fourth of the weekend in the second period in the 4-3 sweep clinching win.

Through 26 games this season, Moore sits third in Canada West scoring with 12 goals and 23 assists.

The Horns have a bye this weekend before returning to action Feb. 26-27 when they close out the regular season at home against ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan Huskies.

Juggling the role of a student-athlete

When Mike O'Brien says he's planning on going to medical school next year, you can all but consider it a certainty – that's just the way he gets things done.
A soon-to-be-graduating (he finishes school in December and will convocate in the spring) senior fullback from the Pronghorns men's soccer program, O'Brien has made a habit of setting goals and steadfastly achieving them.

A walk-on candidate for the soccer team in his first year, he introduced himself to head coach Randy Bardock over e-mail and was only assured he'd get an opportunity to try out when he arrived. Five years later, O'Brien finished his career as a team captain, a second-team conference all-star and the highest scoring fullback in program history.

His academic career at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ followed a similar path. For two years he put up good, if not outstanding, grades while combining soccer and studies. Since then, with an eye on a future in medicine, O'Brien dedicated himself to improving his academic standing. The result was consecutive selections as an Academic All-Canadian (a third is in the offing) and the Canada West Student-Athlete of the Year nod for 2009.

"It is a point of pride that I am able to be an Academic All-Canadian because there are very few athletes in general who get that honour," says O'Brien, a 22-year-old Calgary, Alta. native.

"Maturity has been the biggest change. Moving away from home for the first time, there are so many distractions and I definitely took advantage of those in my first two years. I had a B and B+ average, which isn't horrible, but it's not good enough to get into medical school.

"I realized I needed to change my academic habits. It wasn't really until my third year when I started to improve. Maturity and learning from my past mistakes were the biggest differences."

A biological science major, O'Brien has already applied to attend medical school upon graduation next spring. This past summer, he immersed himself in the medical field, spending two months as a volunteer in Arusha, Tanzania, with the Volunteer Abroad organization.

"It was an amazing experience," says O'Brien. "I was able to help in an HIV/AIDS clinic, work in a lab and maternal health clinic and observe major surgical procedures first hand."

He says the work he did only steeled his resolve to become a doctor.
"It reaffirmed my desire to go to medical school but more than that, it made me want to do something more, perhaps as a doctor, to further help people in developing countries," he says.

"Being in Tanzania really gave me an appreciation of the opportunities I have here in Canada, like being able to go to university, and I really want to make the most of that."

At home, O'Brien is similarly charitable, working part-time as a community worker for people with disabilities as part of the Southern Alberta Community Living Association.

"I've worked there since the summer of 2007," says O'Brien. "It's something that has given me a great appreciation for what I have and has further encouraged me to pursue medicine as a career."

A true student-athlete in every sense, O'Brien has made the most of his U of L experience. He finds it hard to believe five years have passed since he walked on to the old soccer field a virtual unknown.

"I was pretty surprised initially when I even made the team and from there, I just worked on improving, gradually earned more playing time and then a starting spot," O'Brien says. "It amazes me that five years are over now and I'm getting ready to leave."

He'll go as a mature, confident graduate that is sure to represent the best the U of L has to offer.

Rugby awards a U of L sweep

As 2009 Canada West Rugby Player of the Year, Lethbridge fly half Ashley Patzer's resume is getting longer and more impressive with each passing day.

The fifth-year Pronghorns team captain is in the final two weeks of a CIS career that includes two CIS championships, the 2008 CIS national tournament MVP award, CIS Player of the Year in 2006, CIS Rookie of the Year in 2005, three previous selections as a Canada West All-Star (now four) and two as a CIS All-Canadian.

The third-year kinesiology student and Lethbridge native is also a member of the Canadian Senior and Sevens rosters after playing on the U-19 team in 2006.

"Ashley Patzer has reinforced her reputation as an all-round phenom," says Lethbridge head coach Neil Langevin after Patzer captained her squad to a fourth consecutive Canada West title victory over the weekend. "To call her dynamic would be an understatement. She has continued to be an inspirational leader for her teammates and has developed to be one of the top players in the world."

Patzer had 40 points during the conference season, best in the conference, including four tries, seven converts and two penalty goals. The Pronghorns went 4-0-0, earning the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament, where they defeated host Alberta 30-0 in the final to qualify for this year's CIS tournament. In the final Patzer scored one try, two penalty goals and two converts.

Kelsey Willoughby, also of Lethbridge, added to the individual honours for the Pronghorns, earning the Canada West Rookie of the Year award. As well, Langevin grabbed coach of the year honours for 2009 and eight Horns were named to the first all-star team.

Willoughby, a first-year flanker and kinesiology student, scored two tries and played a key role in the Pronghorns' perfect conference season. She also scored a try during Friday's semifinal win over Victoria, helping her side earn a berth in the league final.

"Kelsey Willoughby had a spectacular rookie season," says Langevin. "Her power, speed and crafty running ability enabled her to be the top scoring forward in the conference. Her work rate is phenomenal and she has continued to improve all year. She will have a very bright future in Canadian rugby."

In 10 seasons on the sidelines, Langevin has helped Lethbridge to three Canada West titles and the last two CIS championships. In 2006 they defeated perennial rugby powerhouse Western Ontario to claim bronze and in 2003 the franchise made its first podium appearance at nationals, taking home a silver medal.

Women encouraged to "Put Yourself First"

Women take note, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has entered into the Health Challenge – "Put Yourself First" to encourage woman to get their mammogram and Pap tests.

The Alberta Health Services – Breast and Cervical Health Program, and the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation has teamed up with Meyers, Norris, Penny to present this program. Every woman who has a mammogram or Pap test between May 27, 2009 and October 26, 2009 will have their name entered in a draw to win a $100 gift certificate at the Keg Restaurant. The business with the largest number of women having Pap tests and mammograms will win the challenge and receive a plaque.

What do I get for participating in the challenge?

You get the assurance that you are taking care of yourself by getting a Pap or mammogram or both. Both of these tests can save your life. Your name is also entered into a draw for a $100 gift certificate at the Keg Restaurant.

Sign up with Suzanne McIntosh, team captain for the U of L. She will give you a card to be signed by the health care professional that has done either the mammogram or Pap test. The card is then returned to Suzanne for entry into the draw at the end of the challenge.

How do I book a Pap or Mammogram?

For a Pap test:

• Call your Family Physician to book an appointment.

• If you do not have a family physician or would prefer to see a female physician for a Pap test, call the Breast and Cervical Health Programs (403-388-6324) to book an appointment to attend the weekly Pap clinic. You will need to provide your Alberta Health Care Number and an appointment will be booked for you.

For a Mammogram:

• Call your family physician and book an appointment. Women aged 50 to 69 can phone Radiology Associates and book a "screening" mammogram, provided they have not had any breast problems.

• The recommended guidelines for having a mammogram are as follows: Women aged 40 to 50 should discuss the need for a mammogram with their family physician based on their health history. Women aged 50 to 69 should have a mammogram every one to two years.

If I have a mammogram and Pap do I get two entries into the draw for the gift certificate?

Yes! Just ensure your team captain gives you two cards to fill out.

Students earn bragging rights

Score a victory for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Student Chess Club.

The annual Chess Challenge event, pitting a team of five chess-playing professors against the best players from the student club, took place Mar. 21-22.

An annual event contested since 1998, and perhaps unique to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, the professors were coming off a victory in 2008 and entered this year's contest with their habitual sense of invincibility. They were shocked, however, to be confronted with a student team fortified by new talent and determined to assert their superiority. After 16 games, the students came out on top by a score of 9-7, a point being awarded for each game won.

The victorious student team comprised: Cashe Erskine, Thomas Fox (team captain), Gregory Holmes, Slava Ilnytskyy and Ihor Kurylo. The professors were: Lance Grigg (Education), Igor Kovalchuk (Biology), Vic Rodych (Philosophy), Brian Titley (Education, and team captain) and Paul Viminitz (Philosophy).

The best individual performance in the tournament was by Dr. Igor Kovalchuk, who won all four of his games. The rivalry will be renewed a year from now.
