The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Bow Valley College offer a new academic pathway in supply chain management

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Bow Valley College are pleased to announce a unique new program that will train students for the high-demand profession of supply chain management. The Business and Supply Chain Management integrated pathway program will see students earn a Business Administration Diploma with a major in supply chain management through Bow Valley College and a Bachelor of Management with a major in general management through the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Dhillon School of Business.

Funding has been made possible through the Ministry of Advanced Education and the Alberta at Work initiative, which expands seat capacity to support evolving labour market needs.

“The events of the past few years have made everyone aware of how crucial it is to get goods such as food, medical supplies, household goods and raw materials such as grain quickly to where they need to be,” says Dr. Carla Carnaghan, associate dean, ULethbridge Dhillon School of Business. “This combined program offered in Calgary addresses a strong need by industry for individuals who not only have knowledge of procurement, supply chain and inventory management from the Bow Valley College diploma but also the broader managerial skills such as communications, human resources, accounting, finance and project management from the BMgt degree.”

“Supply chain management is gaining traction as an attractive career option,” says Eddie Sargent, associate dean, Bow Valley College Chiu School of Business. “Expertise in supply chain and logistics is critical in the movement of goods and commodities to consumers, manufacturers and wholesalers. We are proud to partner with ULethbridge to train the next generation of talented individuals to be job-ready for this exciting, in-demand career.”

Students will complete the programs concurrently over a four-year period. This pathway program will have an experiential learning component with the option of taking an applied studies course with an employer or exploring co-op opportunities. Students will gain skills in areas such as logistics, supply chain, negotiations, budgeting, project management and communication.

“ULethbridge and Bow Valley College are uniquely suited to deliver this program because we have a shared location in downtown Calgary. The city is also a key transportation and logistics hub for Canada with an ecosystem that provides well-paying jobs in supply chain management,” says Sargent.

This partnership helps address a talent gap in the logistics economy, including a nationwide demand for supply chain and logistics managers and the broader skillsets of business management and operations.

“A scan of job postings demonstrates that employers want both supply chain competencies and a bachelor’s degree. This reinforces the need for an integrated pathway for students,” says Carnaghan.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Bow Valley College will work alongside Supply Chain Canada to support graduates pursuing a Supply Chain Management Professional (SCMP) designation.

Dhillon School first in province to have new data analytics course recognized for entry into CPA Professional Education Program

Dhillon School of Business Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) hopefuls can get ahead this September with a new accounting course, Accounting Information Systems and Data Analytics (Management 3171). The course satisfies a new key competency area introduced by CPA Canada which students will need to complete before they enter into the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP). The Dhillon School of Business at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge was the first and is one of only a few schools in all of Alberta to have a course in this subject area recognized as meeting the data analytics pre-requisite requirements for PEP.

Dhillon accounting faculty member, Dr. Carla Carnaghan, who was on the nationwide CPA Canada task force recommending the competencies for the new data analytics and information systems component, says that she and her colleagues Dr. George Gonzalez and information systems auditor Ademola Ajidagba, started working on the course a few years ago.

“The accounting curriculum at the Dhillon School of Business has always included a technology component, but data analytics is new,” says Carnaghan. “We’ll be helping students visualize and analyze data that influences business decisions. They’ll take both large and small volumes of data and look for patterns and relationships which will help evaluate business performance and risk.”

Though spring 2020 was the first time Accounting Information Systems and Data Analytics was taught on the Lethbridge campus, the Dhillon School of Business at the Calgary Campus started offering the course in 2019.

Dean Kerry Godfrey says that these types of courses, with a focus on technology and data analytics, are central to the school’s pursuit of innovation both in business education and in business management.

“The Dhillon School of Business is continually exploring opportunities to introduce data analytics into the curriculum to ensure our graduates are best equipped to meet the challenge of current and future business issues and opportunities,” he says.

Non-accounting majors are also eligible to take the new course. In addition, Management Information Systems, a course taken by all other Dhillon business students is being redeveloped to include a data analytics component.

Universities across Alberta will have until fall 2021 to catch up with the new CPA Canada competency requirements.

Blood donor success started as passion project for Infanti

Sometimes the smallest gestures end up making the largest impact.

Patti Infanti recalls a conversation she had about seven years ago with Dr. Carla Carnaghan of the Dhillon School of Business. Infanti, who works in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Financial Services Office, had just come back from donating blood with a couple of colleagues. They thought it would be neat if there was some sort of campus challenge to recruit even more people to start donating, so Infanti placed a call to Canadian Blood Services.

The U of L, through supporters such as these, won the 2017-2018 Canadian ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and College Blood Donor Challenge.

“They told me about their partnership program and how we could sign the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ up and we decided to do it,” says Infanti. “I remember the first few years when it was just Carla and I sitting at tables. We were able to recruit a few volunteers to help us out but it was hard; it took a lot of work to get people involved.”

Eventually, the hard work paid off with the U of L being honoured as the winner of the 2017-2018 Canadian ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and College Blood Donor Challenge.

“I was shocked when they told us that we’d won because we’re competing against some huge universities,” says Infanti. “Maybe because we are so small, there is more of a community here.”

For the period September 2017 through March 2018, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ led the country with 592 total donations as well as 92 new donors. Infanti is quick to deflect praise to everyone who has jumped on board her passion project.

U of L students played a huge role in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ achieving its highest donor rate ever.

“It’s certainly not just me; I maybe started it but I’ve got so many people on our committee now and every one of them is passionate about this,” she says. “I know I am so proud to say I work at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and I think so many others feel that way, too.”

Infanti says she always had been a blood donor but had fallen out of step for a while before she jumpstarted the U of L program.

“I was at a point in my life where I was looking for a positive thing to do and the more I learned about it, the more passionate I became about it,” she says. “People are inherently good and it’s not a hard thing to do. The difficult thing is you don’t want to make people feel guilty if they can’t donate because there are so many reasons why they might not be able to. For them, there are still lots of ways to get involved and I think we’ve really come together as a community and I feel so proud.”

She credits Nancy Walker, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s vice-president (finance and administration) for being especially supportive in the early years of the campaign by offering incentives to employees if they signed up to donate. Infanti also gives a ton of credit to U of L students.

“Belinda (Tomiyama) at Canadian Blood Services helped us get the Students’ Union involved, as well as the School of Graduate Studies,” says Infanti. “I truly believe the turning point was when the students got involved because they get very passionate about these things, too. It’s easy for me now, all I do is book signage and tables for them and really, it’s just taken off, which is exactly what we wanted.”

Her example of selflessness runs in the family. Her son, also a donor, noticed signs for the OneMatch stem cell donation program and signed up. This past January, he was told he was a perfect match with a patient in need and helped with a stem cell donation.

Infanti says it is stories like these, and many more, that speak to the importance of the program and how the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community can make a difference.

“I want to express my sincerest gratitude to everyone who is involved in this, whether they can donate or not. Just being part of this is a huge thing. I think of how many lives we have actually saved as a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ; it is so far reaching.”

U of L donors supporting CBS

Volunteers are often considered the lifeblood of an organization, but never is that more apparent than for the conscientious people who visit Canadian Blood Services (CBS) to donate a pint of their own.

Last spring, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge became a proud Partner for Life with CBS, meaning that the U of L is committed to supplying a minimum number of donations from faculty, staff and students. Over the past several months, members of the U of L community have been transported on the CBS Lifebus to the local donation centre, working hard toward reaching the goal of 150 units of blood.

Shamus Neeson, the community development co-ordinator for CBS, is excited about the enthusiastic response from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

"I'm very happy about the strong partnership we have with the U of L," he says. "I'm really looking forward to continuing the relationship and increasing our donor numbers in the coming years."

Canadian Blood Services established the U of L connection with the generous help of Faculty of Management Accounting Assistant, Patti Leeb, and accounting faculty member, Carla Carnaghan. Leeb and Carnaghan worked to share news of the Partners for Life initiative through various communications channels on campus, and are continuing to try and increase donor numbers.

To date, participation in the program has been mainly from faculty and staff at the U of L, and Neeson is hoping to see more student donors in the future. There are still more than 14,600 new donors required in Alberta alone this year and greater student representation could help fill that need. To that end, two student teams from MGT 3250 (Social Marketing) will be working with Leeb, Carnaghan and Neeson to better reach students on campus.

"I would really love to see every eligible faculty member, staff and student from the U of L be committed to donating blood on a regular basis and truly make an impact on saving lives," says Leeb.

When 2012 draws to a close, Neeson and Leeb will take stock of the success of the program and work to establish a new, perhaps more ambitious, donation goal for 2013.

Cooper tells WorldCom fraud story

Cynthia Cooper brought a corporate giant to its knees and now she's filling seats by telling her story.

Known internationally as the WorldCom whistleblower, Cooper and her team of internal auditors launched a 2002 investigation that uncovered $3.8 billion in fraud — the largest corporate fraud in history at that time. The journey she took in first finding the fraud, and then getting it out in the open is part of Cooper's presentation today (12 p.m. to 1 p.m.) in the Students' Union A & B ballrooms.

"It's an absolutely fascinating story about how she and her team became aware of the issue and the effort she had to go through to get anybody to pay attention," U of L Assistant Professor of Management Dr. Carla Carnaghan says. "She initially couldn't get the board of directors to pay attention, couldn't get more senior people in the hierarchy to pay attention and several people tried to tell her to stop looking. She really had to fight to bring this to light."

Carnaghan has seen Cooper speak in the past and says her story and its presentation is riveting.

"I think this appeals to anybody who's interested in ethics, who's interested in corporate-social responsibility or the issue of how one person can make a difference," Carnaghan says. "I think she's just a fantastic example of someone who worked hard to make a difference and worked hard to correct a wrong that she saw."

It was 2002 when World-Com, an American telecommunications behemoth was caught painting a false picture of financial growth and profitability to prop up the price of its stock. Cooper and her team of internal auditors brought the fraud (the company's total assets had been inflated by an approximate $11 billion) to light, resulting in a host of firings and resignations, the company filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and the eventual conviction of WorldCom co-founder and chief executive officer Bernard Ebbers on fraud and conspiracy charges.

As Cooper speaks today, the world's financial picture is grim and business ethics are a key topic of conversation.

"There may well be other people who have to do similar things and step forward," Carnaghan says. "What she did took a lot of courage, and I think it's a wonderful human interest story."

Cooper, along with fellow corporate whistleblowers Sherron Watkins (Enron) and Coleen Rowley (FBI), was named one of Time's 2002 Persons of the Year.

"I've definitely encouraged all my students in accounting theory to go to this presentation," Carnaghan says. "I've mentioned it to all the faculty too because I just think it's an absolutely fascinating story."
