Library opens Faculty Publications display

The library is excited to announce a new Faculty Publications display.

This permanent display was created to highlight books authored by ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge faculty members. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Library purchases and circulates publications by ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ faculty and is proud to have a collection that reflects the scholarship of faculty members.

Located on the wall beside the Reference Collection (level 10 East), the selection of faculty-authored publications will rotate as books are checked out and replaced. In the library catalog, books included in the display will have the location status field of Faculty Publications to help users identify where to find these items.

We invite you to visit the library to explore the books currently on display and check out items if desired.

The Faculty Authored Publications within the library collections are primarily based on submissions to the annual book awards event that honours faculty members' monographic publishing and editing accomplishments each year. The library draws materials for the display from a list containing approximately 200 books. You may find this list at www.uleth.ca/lib by selecting Collection Highlights under About Us in the footer of the library's homepage. One of the collections highlighted is the U of Lethbridge Faculty Authored Publications.

Because we know that the list is not necessarily comprehensive, the library is asking faculty members for help in building this list and the collection itself. If there is a book that you or your colleague has written that is in the library and not included in the list of Faculty Authored Publications, please send a message to the library using the Comment and Replies link found under Quick Links on the library's homepage. Library staff will then be able to include the book in the list of other faculty-authored publications.

The library also encourages faculty members to alert their liaison librarian about upcoming publications to ensure that these materials are included within the library's collection. Among the authors whose books are currently on display are Dr. Hilary Rodrigues, John Peter Oleson, Dr. Ian McAdam and Dr. Alan Siaroff.

Honouring long service

Convocation highlights week

An estimated 1,500 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students will cross the stage to receive well-earned university degrees this week as the U of L holds its Spring Convocation, Thursday and Friday in the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

A total of four ceremonies will be held over the two days, beginning with Thursday morning's 9:30 a.m. Ceremony I event. Ceremony II is set for Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., followed by Ceremony III and IV on Friday, 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively.

In addition to the many degrees that will be handed out, a number of members from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community will be honoured for outstanding achievements throughout the past year. Dr. Ian McAdam (English) will receive the 2009 Distinguished Teaching Award and be honoured duriing Ceremony I. Dr. Brian Titley (Education) is the 2009 winner of the Ingrid Speaker Medal and he will be honoured during Friday morning's Ceremony III. The 2009 Senate Volunteer Award goes to Dr. Dennis Connolly and he will be honoured during Thursday evening's Chancellor's Dinner, beginning at 6 p.m. A limited number of tickets are still available for this event. Distinguished teacher connects with students

He's been known to incorporate the Simpson's cartoon family into his lectures and inspire students to say they could "listen to him all day". He's also earned the reputation as a meticulous planner and master of his scholarship. For that, and a variety of other reasons, Dr. Ian McAdam is the 2009 Distinguished Teaching Award recipient.

"I find it exceptionally gratifying, especially at an institution that emphasizes teaching excellence. I guess it does validate my approach and it also makes me a little nervous that I have to live up to it for the rest of my career," McAdam laughs.

An English professor, the Calgary-raised McAdam has been on staff at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ since 1995. With a boundless enthusiasm and infectious passion for modern literature, McAdam is known for his ability to engage students. He says the small class sizes at the U of L are a perfect fit for his teaching style.

"It allows you to have conversations and discussions in class that are manageable," McAdam says. "I think with a smaller class size, students are more willing to speak up, they feel less intimidated. It's also an advantage for me in that I still think marking an essay is one of the major tests for evaluation in English literature, and it means that it's a doable amount of work for me with 40 students as opposed to 80."

McAdam is especially adept at connecting classic texts to timeless themes found in literature or current popular culture. Film clips, excerpts from related scholarship and musical and artistic artifacts help him put literature in context. Through anecdotes, analogies, and examples (such as the Simpson's), he is able to make obscure concepts clear and reach even those students who might have had little or no previous interest in literature of the 16th and 17th centuries.

"There's something old fashioned about me, I like to focus on what might be the universal messages in literature that I teach," he says. "A lot of recent theory and scholarly approaches emphasize a historical context but in spite of that, I believe you can identify certain themes that recur over the centuries and I think that works."

McAdam is also a dedicated researcher who is particularly interested in the use of magic in early modern literature. He has recently authored a book that is going to press on masculinity and magic in early modern English drama. Taking that research into the classroom and encouraging dialogue with students is a long held ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ tenet and something McAdam takes to heart.

"We have an approachable faculty where students feel comfortable coming to see us on a regular basis. I try and encourage my students to come see me and sometimes wish they would come by more often," he says. "We also have a great balance between teaching and research – we are a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, not a college – so that gives us a double advantage."

A father of two (five-year-old Kate and three-year-old Sam), with his wife Wendy, McAdam revels in his role as a professor of modern literature, even deflecting some of the credit to the authors he's privileged to study.

"Anyone who makes a living teaching great, and endlessly interesting, literature to groups of young adults should feel ridiculously lucky," he says. "Since I get my very best evaluations, I think, in my Shakespeare classes, I feel, honestly, that I owe something of that positive response to the brilliance of Shakespeare himself."

He humbly adds the words of a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Victoria professor, from whom he took an undergraduate course.

"He told me that if you can't teach Shakespeare (and make it interesting), you shouldn't be teaching at all."

Thankfully, McAdam is teaching, and doing so remarkably well.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge President Dr. Bill Cade chats about what's happening in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community

It was with great pleasure that the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ announced the appointment of Dr. Susan McDaniel as the first Director of the Prentice Institute. When the Institute was first established in 2006, thanks to the generous donation of the Prentice family, the mandate was to create an internationally recognized centre for the research of big-picture issues relating to global population change and demographics. At that time we expected to attract someone of great prominence to the role of Director because of the opportunity it presented.

Dr. McDaniel is exactly the calibre of researcher we envisioned filling this role and I am excited to have her join the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. I look forward to watching the Prentice Institute take shape under her stewardship.

As we approach Spring Convocation, I want to congratulate personally all those who will be participating in this joyous occasion. You have worked hard over your years here at the U of L and it is exciting to see that work pay off in the culmination of your goals.

I have been through many convocation ceremonies and while they are all similar in nature, each one is unique in its own right. I want to thank the many people who make the event happen, from the convocation committee to the volunteers to the Registrar's Office. I am sure they encounter a variety of glitches behind the scenes but year after year, the ceremonies continue to run like clockwork and are presented flawlessly.

It is with great pleasure that we present a number of awards at convocation. We should be proud to celebrate achievement and recognize those individuals who have distinguished themselves. As a researcher and educator, I take particular note of the Ingrid Speaker Medal and Distinguished Teacher Award honours. Congratulations respectively to Dr. Brian Titley and Dr. Ian McAdam.

Welcome back to Dave Adams, recently named the new head coach of the Pronghorns men's basketball program. Dave brings a great deal of enthusiasm to the program and I wish him well in his goal to grow what he deems, "Horns Nation". I share in his vision of a national championship team playing to sellout crowds at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

A number of sporting dignitaries with strong ties to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ were inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame recently. In fact, the entire evening was a Blue and Gold affair, right down to the event's master of ceremonies (alumnus Toby Boulet) and guest speaker (alumnus Neil Langevin). Congratulations to inductees and alumni Dori (Rodzinyak) Johnson, Danny Balderson and Don Chandler as well as Kinsmen Sportspersons of the Year and Pronghorn athletes Jim Steacy and Ashley Patzer.

Congratulations to Keith Robin, recently named the Rotary Club of Lethbridge's 2008 Citizen of the Year. A Chancellor Emeritus of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ from 1987 to 1991, Robin was heavily involved in the LINC fundraising effort and is someone who we still see often at the U of L and associated events.

Finally, I look forward to the upcoming Board of Directors retreat later this month. It will be held at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for the first time in quite a while and will help the Board appreciate what it is like to be a student here on campus. It promises to be an enlightening event.

McAdam, Titley receive honours

Dr. Ian McAdam and Dr. Brian Titley were both honoured by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Wednesday as they received the Distinguished Teaching Award and the Ingrid Speaker Medal for Distinguished Research, Scholarship or Performance, respectively.

McAdam, of the U of L's English Department in the Faculty of Arts & Science, was selected by the Distinguished Teaching Award Selection Committee to receive the Distinguished Teaching Award to be presented at the 2009 Spring Convocation.

"The commitment of the university to teaching excellence is appropriately recognized through this award and I congratulate Dr. McAdam on being selected to receive the award in recognition of the quality of his teaching," ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ President, Dr. Bill Cade, says.

Titley is a member of the Faculty of Education. He has been selected to receive the Ingrid Speaker Medal for Distinguished Research, which will also be presented at the 2009 Spring convocation.
