Professional development conference geared to students

Faculty of Management students will get a head start on their professional development by hearing from top-notch speakers during a two-day conference Thursday and Friday at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

In addition to attending a networking dinner on Thursday evening with Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey, co-founders of Barefoot Cellars, students will have a full day of sessions Friday.

“We host this conference and other professional development events to provide our students with opportunities to hear from and interact with leaders in business and management,” says Bob Ellis, dean of the Faculty of Management. “These opportunities are invaluable and give our students an edge both personally and professionally.”

The day begins with a keynote speech from Stuart Knight, a graduate of the School of Business and Economics at Wilfrid Laurier ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Now an entrepreneur, author, producer and motivational speaker, Knight will talk about the ‘Four Conversations for Success’ that inspire people to change the conversations in their mind so that they can overcome challenges.

In Session 1, Mark Slomp, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Counselling Services manager, presents ‘The High Five of Career Development – Putting the YOU into your career.’ In Session 2, Greg Stonehocker, a local ActionCOACH, will talk about personal brand management.

The day closes with a public talk by Bob Garner, an entrepreneur who took a dream and turned it into reality. Garner created two successful companies and achieved financial security before the age of 40. Garner will deliver a unique presentation that combines useful information with amazing demonstrations of mind reading and humour. Garner speaks from 3 to 4:15 p.m. Friday in the Students’ Union Ballroom. Anyone interested in attending is asked to register at the Faculty of Management website.

Saskatchewan MLA to share her wisdom with U of L students

Saskatoon Fairview MLA Jennifer Campeau, who completed a bachelor’s degree in the First Nations Governance program in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Faculty of Management, will be back in Lethbridge Jan. 26 to 30, 2015 to share her expertise with students and youth.

"We are delighted and honoured that one of our graduates, the Honourable Minister Jennifer Campeau, is returning to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge to serve as the inaugural Executive In Residence for our Scotiabank First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Mentors Program,” says Faculty of Management Dean Dr. Bob Ellis. “Her leadership and dedication to public service make her an inspiration for our students and the entire community. We wish to express our deep appreciation to Scotiabank for supporting this wonderful initiative.”

“We are proud to host the Honourable Minister Campeau and welcome her back to southern Alberta. She was one of the first graduates of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s First Nations Governance Program in 2008 and three short years later she was elected to the Saskatchewan legislature,” says Andrea Amelinckx, Chair of the First Nations Governance Area in the Faculty of Management. "She was recently appointed Minister of Central Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Transportation Company. She is an engaging speaker and an outstanding role model for our students and Aboriginal youth in general. We know they will benefit from her experiences."

Campeau was first elected to the Saskatchewan legislature in 2011. In 2013, she was appointed legislative secretary to Saskatchewan’s education minister. She also chaired a Premier’s Aboriginal Youth Task Force at the request of Premier Brad Wall. In 2014, she became Minister of Central Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Transportation Company.

Before she entered politics, Campeau was an instructor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan and a doctoral student in the Department of Native Studies. After she graduated from the U of L, she obtained a Masters of Business Administration degree at the U of S.

The purpose of the Scotiabank First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Mentors Program is to engage Aboriginal youth in a culturally sensitive, safe and welcoming environment. Mentors are U of L Aboriginal students who provide support to Aboriginal youth aged 12 to 17 enrolled in school in Lethbridge or on the Blood and Piikani reserves. Youth and their mentors meet twice a month to share common interests and participate in activities.

As Executive In Residence, Campeau will speak to several U of L classes, talk to graduate students and students in the First Nations Transition Program, and meet with area high school students. At a dinner Thursday evening, she will speak to the importance of role modeling and mentorship for Aboriginal youth. She will be available to speak to media on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. in the Markin Hall atrium.

Students of the Bachelor of Management with a major in finance degree program taking steps to career success through preparation for the CFA Program

Lethbridge, Alberta, January 15, 2015 — The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has become the latest university to be welcomed into the CFA Institute ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Recognition Program. The Bachelor of Management with a major in finance program has been acknowledged as incorporating at least 70 per cent of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) and placing emphasis on the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice within the program. This program positions students well to obtain the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, which has become the most respected and recognized investment credential in the world.

Barefoot Cellars founders named 2015 Executives in Residence for Faculty of Management

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Management students stand to benefit from one of the greatest entrepreneurial stories ever told.

Bonnie Harvey and Michael Houlihan will be kept busy during their week on campus, sharing the expertise they acquired from an incredible entrepreneurial story.

Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey co-founded Barefoot Cellars, the #1 wine brand in the world, with little industry knowledge and no capital, building an unknown label into one of the fastest-growing brands in America. From Feb. 2-5, 2015 the couple will be featured as U of L Faculty of Management Executives in Residence, bringing their principles for success to students at both the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Lethbridge and Calgary campuses.

“We’re really excited about the whole opportunity and love what the Faculty of Management is up to, we think it’s really fantastic,” says Houlihan, who along with Harvey will spend the majority of the week addressing and inspiring students, a role they’ve excelled at since selling the Barefoot brand.

“So much of what we did and learned was as a result of not having a bankroll behind us,” says Harvey from their California offices. “If students are afraid of not having enough knowledge to get into an industry or not having enough money, we’re right there to prove to them that you can be extremely successful without either, and they just might turn out to be assets for you.”

Since selling their brand, Houlihan and Harvey have consulted Fortune 500s and start-up businesses alike, penned a New York Times bestseller (The Barefoot Spirit, currently being used in 30 schools of entrepreneurship), keynote internationally and have spoken to schools of entrepreneurship across the United States. They recently served as keynote speakers for the 2014 SOCAP Symposium (Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals in Business), 2014 World Conference on Entrepreneurship in Dublin, Ireland, and the National C-Suite Conference in Los Angeles.

“The Executive in Residence program was initiated as a means to bring real-world expertise into the classroom and to give our students opportunities to gain knowledge and insight from those working in key industry positions,” says Dr. Bob Ellis, the U of L’s Dean of the Faculty of Management.

“To be able to bring Michael and Bonnie to our campuses for a week to share their insights is outstanding. They built their brand from the ground up and their example of entrepreneurship, coupled with the social conscience that guides all their business decisions, is uniquely suited to the philosophies of the Faculty.”

Indeed, Houlihan and Harvey pioneered the concept of worthy cause marketing, a brand mainstay that persists today.

“Barefoot became the largest selling brand in the world, not through advertising, but through worthy cause marketing,” says Houlihan. “It’s a term we coined to distinguish it from cause marketing and it’s really about social entrepreneurship and the idea that your brand represents more for your customer than a mercantile product or service. The brand serves a larger charitable or non-profit community giving the customer a social reason to buy your product.”

It was a revolutionary concept that created legions of loyal customers and served community interests across the United States.

“It was a very grassroots approach, and we found out about it not because we were such great tree huggers but because we were broke,” laughs Houlihan. “We didn’t have any money for advertising and as you know, if you advertise, you can’t just advertise once. We wanted an approach that really said what we stood for as an organization.”

Houlihan and Harvey will begin their week with a public presentation on Monday, Feb. 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Delta Bow Valley Hotel in Calgary (free registration is available online, lunch and a copy of the Barefoot Spirit book included), followed by a student/industry mix and mingle event that evening at the U of L’s Calgary campus.

The couple will then head to the Lethbridge campus for three full days of presentations and seminars. Their week concludes with a keynote address at the Student Professional Development Conference on Thursday, Feb. 5 at the Coast Hotel. “What we would like to achieve is to impart our 30 years of business expertise to these young entrepreneurs who are starting out, so that they don’t have to suffer some of the pain that we did,” says Houlihan.

Chillin' 4 Charity 2013 on at Galt Gardens

That's right, it's Chillin' 4 Charity time again, and this year JDC West is dialing up the fun factor by taking the event off campus.

The annual United Way fundraiser is always a chilln' good time.

Spnsored by YPM Chartered Acountants, the 9th Annual Chillin' is taking place at Galt Gardens in downtown Lethbridge today, near the fountain area.

As always, the event raises funds in support of United Way of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta. Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to come to Galt Gardens between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to watch the jumpers, enjoy some food and make a donation.

Last year, JDC West raised $5,460, and they are hoping to exceed that number this year and further support the United Way.

People making a splash for the United Way this year include Dean of the Faculty of Management, Dr. Bob Ellis, and the newly elected Mayor of Lethbridge, Chris Spearman (splashdown is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.).

Pereira introduced as Management's first Executive in Residence

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Faculty of Management is launching its Executive in Residence program by appointing international technology marketing expert Anil Pereira as its first on-site executive.

“We are delighted that our inaugural Executive in Residence is Anil Pereira, a technology entrepreneur with an intense passion for building highly visible and trusted global brands,” says Dr. Bob Ellis, the U of L’s Dean of the Faculty of Management. “Of course, we are also thrilled that he is ‘one of our own’ and able to return to campus to share his insights with students and faculty alike.”

Pereira (BMgt ’87) is a well-known Silicon Valley entrepreneur and marketing executive with more than 20 years of hands-on experience at both start-up companies and global corporations. He is currently the founder and Executive Chairman of Verious, the world’s first code recommendation engine for software developers.

The company serves a booming market that industry analysts predict will be valued at more than $100 billion by 2015.

Pereira, who founded the company in 2011, works with a team of developers to aggregate programming libraries, open source code, tutorials, code samples and snippets and other content that helps app creators and other programmers speed up their time to market.

Verious received a significant award from technology news service TechCrunch as a “2011 Disrupt Award Finalist” in its first year of operation.

The purpose of the Executive in Residence program (funded by the Chartered Professional Accountants) is to create an opportunity for senior leaders in industry and government to visit the Faculty of Management to share the knowledge and insights gained from working in key industries with students, faculty and staff at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and the communities it serves. The program has been designed to tie research-based teaching in the Faculty of Management with practical, real-world examples of business strategy and implementation from senior industry leaders.

Pereira, the 2000 U of L Alumnus of the Year, brings a host of real-world business expertise to campus.

There should be no shortage of ideas that Pereira, the 2000 U of L Alumnus of the Year, might bring with him during his visits to campus – all drawn from his own extensive library of current and previous business experiences.

“You can learn all you want from textbooks, and theory is certainly an important foundation in the world of business, but it’s always eye-opening to successfully apply theory in the workplace,” says Pereira. “My goal is to provide practical examples – to apply research and classroom teachings to businesses in today’s marketplace that are in the midst of rapid change and growth and facing various challenges. I want to help students apply theory to practice in real ways, and help them understand how to manage their own careers.”

Ellis says that the key benefit of Pereira’s visit to campus will be his time spent with students.

Pereira serves as the lead independent director for Fnbox (a holding company that operates leading online businesses in Latin America), and is a senior advisor to Innovation Norway and a number of fast-growing start-ups including Capillary Technologies, Conference Hound and Tynker.

Additionally, he has held senior positions at American Express and VeriSign, a leading Internet infrastructure company, and was the founder and CEO of DataSphere Technologies.

Initially, Pereira will be on campus for a week beginning November 4 to engage students through a series of guest lectures and mentoring sessions. This will set the stage for a return visit in the spring that will feature similar activities as well as public presentations in Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton.

U of L celebrates its Calgary presence at Bow Valley College

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is celebrating the new location of its Calgary Campus with its post-secondary, community, alumni and government partners, as Bow Valley College officially opens its South Campus today.

In addition to the introduction of a beautiful building that will be utilized by four of Alberta's post-secondary institutions, a new partnership between Bow Valley College, Olds College, Athabasca ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is being celebrated in front of dignitaries that include Premier Alison Redford, Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

Since 1996, the U of L has served a critical role in Calgary by offering university degree level programming through its Faculty of Management in the evenings and on weekends.

"By meeting the needs of busy, working adult learners, U of L students can earn a degree in a manner that accommodates their busy lifestyles," says ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge President, Dr. Mike Mahon. "This niche, combined with our Campus Alberta partnership with Bow Valley College, Olds College and Athabasca ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ will create new, important laddering opportunities for Alberta's students."

The U of L's original Calgary Campus was located at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Significant student growth occurred from 1997 to 2001, primarily due to the post-diploma program offered in Calgary. Today, the U of L's Calgary Campus is home to approximately 700 students in Calgary.

"The success of the programming we offer in Calgary can be attributed to the quality of a U of L degree, but also to the efforts the U of L has made in making a university degree accessible to adult learners," says Dean of the Faculty of Management, Dr. Bob Ellis.

When combined with the many students from Calgary who choose to attend the U of L's Lethbridge campus, Calgary and its surrounding areas become the U of L's most significant source of students. Calgary students make up 38 per cent of the U of L's total student body.

Since its inception, more than 1,460 students have graduated from the Calgary Campus. Overall, Calgary and area is home to more than 7,000 U of L alumni.

"The U of L is very proud of the role it plays in creating access for Alberta students, whether they attend our Lethbridge, Calgary or Edmonton campuses. Further, we are extremely proud of the role our alumni are playing in building communities across Alberta, Canada and internationally," says Mahon.

SBI partners with ATB to create speaker series

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge joined ATB Financial officials at the new Highlands Crossing branch in west Lethbridge on Friday, October 5, 2012 to announce ATB Financial's support of the newly-established ATB Financial Small Business Institute Speaker Series.

A $36,000 investment will help launch the series, which will see industry leaders and researchers visit communities throughout southern Alberta to share their knowledge, insights and experiences on topics related to small business.

"This gift demonstrates ATB Financial's commitment to education, research and the business communities of southern Alberta," says U of L Faculty of Management Dean Dr. Bob Ellis. "The new speaker series will help forge ties among the small business community, ATB Financial and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, resulting in strong partnerships that benefit southern Alberta business."

The widespread delivery of the speaker series is what makes the program so unique. Presentations from industry leaders and researchers will be made throughout southern Alberta, with a special focus on reaching rural communities.

"One of the things we love most at ATB Financial is being able to help small businesses succeed," says Rob Smith, Vice-President, ATB Financial South. "At ATB, we like to think we know Alberta and Albertans better than any other financial institution. With that in mind, it's exciting to partner with the U of L's Faculty of Management for the ATB Financial Small Business Institute Speakers Series. Led by Small Business Institute directors, Dr. M. Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff, the series will be of interest to those currently involved or considering an investment or career in small business.

"The focus of our investigations is on privately held small businesses, varying from start-up businesses to those that are multi-generational," says Hunter. "The small business is the lifeblood of many rural communities and it's this unique focus of the Small Business Institute that makes its findings so relevant to the Lethbridge and southern Alberta area."

By further connecting with the rural communities that drive the southern Alberta economy, the SBI and students at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge also realize a great benefit from this relationship.

"Our students will benefit from the exchange of ideas with the area's business people," says Kazakoff. "The whole notion is that with an institute, you get people together who might have a common interest in the subject area. By discussing ideas around the table with other individuals, you often find you get a greater depth of understanding. This series offers that opportunity for us to better connect with and understand the issues facing small business owners and operators in southern Alberta."

Three ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge faculties are collaborating on two new, innovative combined degree programs that will bring a management focus to Health Sciences (Public Health) and Fine Arts (New Media).

Open to all current or incoming students beginning in September, 2012 these first-in-Canada degrees are designed to bring the best of all three groups' academic and career-related processes together so students can earn a Bachelor of Management and either a Bachelor of Fine Arts, New Media or a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Public Health.

Graduates would be granted two degrees after meeting the requirements of both programs.

"This is a great example of our faculty members recognizing an opportunity, driven in part by requests from our students, to bring added value to three completely different degree programs," says Dr. Andy Hakin, the U of L's Vice-President, Academic and Provost.

"Cross-campus collaboration happens in many places at the U of L, formally and informally, and these new combined degrees show the type of creativity, innovation and co-operation that helps our students achieve their full potential. I commend the Management, Fine Arts and Health Sciences teams that put these programs together."

Co-operative and applied study opportunities are available in all three faculties so students can further enhance their skills and work experiences in Canada or internationally.

As well, merit-based and entrance scholarships are available in Management, Public Health and Fine Arts.

For Dr. Bob Ellis, the Dean of the Faculty of Management, the chance to work with his colleagues in two different degree streams was an opportunity that further reinforces his interest in collaboration.

"We have excellent programs in our respective Faculties, and graduates of these dual degree programs will possess exceptional knowledge and skills that employers will seek out," says Ellis.

(New Media)/B.Mgt. combined degrees makes graduates even more competitive in the marketplace, giving them skills in interactive technologies, marketing in digital media and social networking sites, as well as business and people management," says Dr. Desmond Rochfort, the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts.

"This unique combination of business and new media expertise opens up more professional opportunities for our fine arts students, and also for those management students who are looking to add the creativity of new media to their degrees."

HEALTH SCIENCES/MANAGEMENT

The combined Public Health/Management degree will see students taking courses in ethics, psychology, ecology of health and disease, human geography and addictions, combined with finance, organizational behavior, global management and labour relations, among other courses.

"Given that policy and administration are key streams of Public Health, an option to combine the B.H.Sc. (Public Health) degree with a Management degree provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain knowledge in both areas," says Dr. Christopher Hosgood, the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

"By focusing the skills of management in the field of public health, graduates will be able to seek opportunities in administrative positions in a variety of areas of public health practice. Our program is developing a good track record of placing students with employers upon graduation, in public, private, and not-for-profit sectors that require specialists in public health who know how to manage people and resources and understand strategic and policy issues."
