This year, 15 deserving ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge graduands will receive medals that acknowledge their significant academic achievements, including the Governor General's Gold and Silver Medals for overall academic excellence, along with medals from specific Faculties and the School of Graduate Studies.

The diverse group of medal recipients come from around the world, across Canada and close to home, including:

Métis Nation of Alberta creates U of L endowment fund

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, officials from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge welcomed members of the Métis Nation of Alberta to campus to jointly announce the creation of a scholarship fund for Métis undergraduate and graduate students.

The $500,000 gift will be endowed in perpetuity and will, through matching funds, support the creation of a $1 million endowment fund. This will help ensure more students of Métis heritage complete their post-secondary education.

There is $25,000 in scholarship funding available this year, including six $2,500 awards to undergraduate students and one $10,000 award to a graduate student.

"The Métis Nation of Alberta, through the Métis Education Foundation, has set up nine endowment funds that total more than $13.3 million," says Audrey Poitras, the President of the Métis Nation of Alberta. "These are more than gifts or donations. These endowments are investments in Métis students."

"Education is a necessary tool for Métis people to prosper and grow, and the U of L is committed to ensuring Métis students will have the financial means and the opportunities to achieve success in their education and their lives," says U of L President, Dr. Mike Mahon.

"There are approximately 100 Métis students currently enrolled at the U of L. We would like to see this number grow as we continue to increase access and support programs. This gift from the Métis Nation of Alberta is a significant step in that direction."

In addition to $15,000 directed to six undergraduate students, Christie-Dawn Ladouceur will receive $10,000 toward her master's degree in counselling psychology, a program she is completing through the U of L Faculty of Education and Campus Alberta.

Originally from the Lac la Biche area in northern Alberta, Ladouceur is now based in Edmonton, and works as a project manager for a not-for-profit Aboriginal organization, where she develops employment and education training programs for youth to improve their career and employment prospects.

"I have three more semesters to complete, and this award will ensure that I can focus on my studies and complete my research," says Ladouceur.

Ladouceur is producing a manual that other counsellors can use to properly identify the challenges faced by urban aboriginal youth, and the gaps and barriers in the various counselling models used to help them.

"I am focusing on the differences that are often overlooked by counsellors if they do not accurately understand the culture of a First Nations, Métis or Inuit student. My hope is that counsellors will be able to better identify and assist young people with their needs, and recognize that the different cultures require different approaches."

Ladouceur says that her master's degree will enable her to move forward within a profession she loves, and deal more directly with young people.

- Jolan Naismith, (Leduc, AB) enrolled in a Bachelor of Management program

- Nicole Robinson, (Lethbridge, AB) enrolled in a Bachelor of Nursing program (NESA)

- Amy Smith, (The Pas, MB) enrolled in a combined Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Education program

The inaugural Métis Scholar Graduate Studies recipient this year is:

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ mourns passing of former employee Mather

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge community offers its most sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late D. Lynn Mather, a former employee of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and spouse of faculty member Dr. Jennifer Mather (psychology).

He passed away at the Edith Cavell Care Centre on Dec. 1 at the age of 70, and after a lengthy illness.

Lynn worked at the U of L as a sessional instructor and academic assistant in Native American Studies and the Faculty of Management from 1989 to 1998.

He was married to Jennifer in June, 1964. He is survived by her and son David (Ariane) and granddaughter Charlotte of Vancouver, as well as daughter Janet (Neal Bennet) and grandson Nicky, also of Vancouver.

The details of a memorial service will be announced at a later date. The family extends thanks to the staff of Edith Cavell Care Centre for three years of loving care.

Flu shots only available at mass venues

Seasonal flu shots have now been made available by Alberta Health Services. However, because of changes initiated by Alberta Health Services, shots will only be administered at community mass venues and will not be available on the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus.

"They are usually available through the Health Centre at this time of year," RN/Manager, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Health Centre, Lori Weber, says. "We have received word that Alberta Health Services has made changes to the delivery of seasonal flu vaccines and they are asking that public health mass venues be used to access seasonal flu shots."

For those wishing to obtain seasonal flu shots, the following dates and locations for these public health mass venues are listed below.

"We'd like to apologize to those in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community who have been waiting for our typical on-campus vaccination clinics," Weber says. "However, we are following the guidelines as laid out by Alberta Health Services."

Gill Memorial Run on tap Thursday

Running has been shown to be good for your health. Combine it with an opportunity to raise funds for a worthy cause and its benefits are twofold. Welcome to the John Gill Memorial Run.

Volunteers will lace up their running shoes Thursday afternoon at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's 1st Choice Savings Centre to raise money for student scholarships as they participate in the second annual John Gill Memorial Run. Beginning at 2:30 p.m. and running through 5:30 p.m., the event is held in memory of John Gill, a good friend of the Students' Union, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and the community who passed away in November 2007.

Gill graduated from the U of L in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. He worked as a lawyer and respected Crown Prosecutor in Lethbridge in addition to raising an active family and serving as the U of L Alumni Association President and volunteering as member of the Board of Governors and Senate.

Gill was also the driving force behind the annual Birdies for Bursaries golf tournament that raised thousands of dollars for U of L student scholarships. The tournament is now the John Gill Memorial Golf Tournament.

The goal with this year's run is to raise $10,000; all funds raised are eligible to be matched by the Alberta Government's Access to the Future Fund.

Those unable to participate in the run are welcome to support the fund through other means.
