This year, 15 deserving ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge graduands will receive medals that acknowledge their significant academic achievements, including the Governor General's Gold and Silver Medals for overall academic excellence, along with medals from specific Faculties and the School of Graduate Studies.

The diverse group of medal recipients come from around the world, across Canada and close to home, including:

Horns add defensive help

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's hockey team has dipped into the Ontario talent pool for a pair of defencemen.

Horns' head coach Greg Gatto continues to revamp the defensive core of the men's hockey team, adding Tim Campbell and David McMullen, defensemen who each have Ontario Hockey League (OHL) experience.

Campbell, a native of Thornhill, ON, joins the 'Horns after finishing his junior career with the Woodstock Slammers of the Maritime Hockey League (MHL). In 45 games as a 20 year-old, Campbell registered 17 goals and 55 assists and was named the top defenseman in the MHL.

"I am excited and really looking forward to coming to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge," says Campbell. "I fell in love with the city when I came out for my visit and can't wait to get started with the Pronghorns."

During his only season in Woodstock, he helped the Slammers win a MHL Championship and a berth in the RBC Championship. At the national championship tournament, Campbell registered five points in six games as the Slammers lost in the final to the Penticton Vees.

Prior to joining the Slammers, Campbell played three seasons in the OHL with the Guelph Storm, compiling eight goals and 39 assists in 166 career games.

"Tim was a pretty sought after guy and he showed great offensive upside last year in Woodstock," says Gatto. "He's a right shot that can quarterback our power play and he played three seasons with a great organization in the OHL."

Also making the trip out west is David McMullen, who played with his hometown Kingston Voyageurs in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). The team captain for the past two seasons, McMullen registered 22 goals and 104 assists in 189 career games. In addition to playing four seasons with the Voyageurs, McMullen played one season in the OHL with the Niagara IceDogs.

"David is another right shot defenseman with good offensive instincts," says Gatto. "He was the captain in Kingston the past two seasons and it is always nice to add a guy with good leadership qualities like that."

Gatto continues to work on rounding out this year's recruiting class. The Horns will open the 2012-2013 Canada West season by hosting the Calgary Dinos in the front half of a home-and-home series on Thursday, Sept. 27.

Practical experience gives Andrusiak leg up

The path to achieving a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ degree may appear to be a linear progression of attending classes, writing exams and eventually walking across a stage to receive a parchment. For students like Jessica Andrusiak (BHSc '10), the journey is anything but direct – rather it is a voyage of self-discovery that branches into unfamiliar territory. The end result, while represented by a piece of paper, is so much more.

"I did not know the specific area I wanted to study when I first attended the U of L," says Andrusiak, who earned a bachelor of health sciences degree in addictions counselling, graduating with great distinction at the Spring Convocation ceremonies. "I was seeking a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ that allowed me to explore options without being set back by a change of heart later on, and the U of L provided me with the freedom to explore a number of career paths. I ended up changing my major three times before finding the perfect fit."

Andrusiak found her passion in the Faculty of Health Sciences and specifically, in the Addictions Counselling program. With the opportunity to gain practical experience through a pair of 13-week internship programs, she not only learned about real work in the counselling field, she also gained an understanding of herself.

"I was able to acquire experience in counselling families, couples, teenagers and adults on various life struggles. I also assisted in implementing various childcare programs," says Andrusiak of her internship with Barons-Eureka-Warner Family and Community Support Services. "It really ignited my passion for family counselling and prevention work in addictions. I also learned that I love early childhood education, especially teaching children the knowledge and skills to cope with adverse life events, how to build resiliency and gain emotional intelligence."

Her studies also included research opportunities. After being granted a 2008 Chinook Summer Research Award (CSRA), she worked under the tutelage of Dr. Bonnie Lee.

"I was able to assist with two main research projects, one on persons with pathological gambling behaviours within the context of marriage therapy, and another on health promotion behaviours in a university population," she says. "This experience led me to develop a greater understanding of the inner workings of a research project, as well as an interest in behavioural addictions."

Hailing from a small town just outside of Calgary, Andrusiak found the community atmosphere of the U of L to her liking and excelled within the framework of small classes and attentive instructors.

"I found it really allowed me to develop a close network of friends within my cohort," she says. "Within my program, the labs were usually between 10 and 20 people, and it gave me a chance to get to know almost everyone in my program, as well as the professors."

Her most memorable connection however was established on her first day on campus.

"I met my fiancé at the barbecue lunch on orientation day," she recalls. "We kept running into each other throughout frosh week, and I think our friendship grew because of the small size of our campus, we just kept seeing each other. Our entire courtship took place during our time at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ."

Now clearly focused on the future, Andrusiak is working in the not-for-profit sector, and plans to pursue an addictions counselling job when she moves to Kingston, Ont. in the fall.

"This degree program is the only one of its kind in Canada, and with the hands-on experience I gained during my studies, I'm confident I'll acquire employment in the future," she says, adding that she also plans to pursue a master's degree.
"The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is a place to explore, and throughout my time there I grew so much personally and was really able to expand my sense of discovery."

Staves, Jaidee win Roloff Beny awards

Sam Staves and Amornthep Jaidee, both of whom are in a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Art) degree program, are the 2008/2009 Roloff Beny Foundation Photographic Award recipients.

The Roloff Beny Foundation Photographic Award in Fine Arts is a prestigious, juried, $5,000 award that supports student travel related to research/creative work in photo-arts. Any new or continuing students enrolled full-time in any BFA degree program with a focused interest in photo-arts is eligible to apply for this competitive award.

Staves is in her fourth year of study in the BFA art studio program and plans to travel to New Orleans, Belize City and Kingston, Jamaica to study
Creole culture.

Jaidee is in his third year of study in the BFA art studio program and has proposed to return to his native Thailand (Chaiprakarn, Chiang Mai) to pursue a documentary project that focuses on the simple activity of a small rural village.

The 2007/2008 Roloff Beny award went to Corinne Thiessen Hepher, who is studying for a BFA in New Media. Hepher used the award to travel to Vancouver and Montreal to produce photo/performance works. In Vancouver, she produced Woman with Monkey On Back: Vancouver and in Montreal she produced Rue St. Remi.

Originally from Medicine Hat, Roloff Beny earned degrees from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto and the State ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Iowa before developing an international reputation for his photographic work. He is considered a distinguished artist in Canadian history and travelled widely throughout Europe and Asia for subjects that subsequently appeared in his own work.

In recognition of his contributions to the fine arts, Roloff Beny was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree in 1972 by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Upon his death in 1984, the
U of L received a significant bequest of Mr. Beny's visual art collection.

In 2004, the Roloff Beny Foundation endowed the U of L Faculty of Fine Arts Art Dept. with the Roloff Beny Foundation Photographic Award in Fine Arts, an award that recognizes and supports excellence in the fine arts.

IME students into ICBC finals

A group of Integrated Management Experience (IME) students in the Faculty of Management has made the final round of Canada's most prestigious business case competition.

Five U of L students made it through a grueling preliminary process to win the right to compete in the finals with business students from around the world at the Queen's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC), which takes place this month in Kingston, Ont.

ICBC is Canada's oldest and largest undergraduate academic business case competition and attracts business students from across Canada and the world. This year, students from 33 international universities (Canada, USA, Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore, and the U.K.) competed in the preliminary round, where the top six teams were chosen to compete in the finals.

The U of L teams that made the finals were in the Ethics category (Chase Degenhardt and Caleb Pierce) and in Business Policy (Larissa Featherstone, Andrew Brown and Allison Mostowich).

It is hard to fathom the fall semester is coming to a close and we are already preparing for the Christmas break.
I have believed always that Christmas comes at exactly the right time in the academic calendar. We begin the fall semester with much energy and enthusiasm, excited by the promise of new discoveries in our classes and research projects and invigorated by the influx of new people to campus.
As December rolls around, we have all worked hard to achieve our goals and are in need of a break. With classes coming to an end and exams taking our focus, students, faculty and staff alike look forward to some down time and Christmas offers that perfect opportunity to reconnect with family members and recharge our batteries for a new semester and a new year.
The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ continued to distinguish itself this past semester with a number of successes on a variety of fronts. Both academically and athletically, we had many reasons to celebrate. Congratulations to Faculty of Fine Arts Associate Professor Dr. Leslie Dawn for winning the Raymond Klibansky Prize for his book, National Visions, National Blindness: Canadian Art and Identities in the 1920s.
I would also like to commend Faculty of Management Academic Assistant Dan Kazakoff and his group of IME students for making it to the finals of the Queen's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Inter-Collegiate Business Competition to be held next month in Kingston, Ont.
These successes showcase the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for all it has to offer its students and not coincidentally, reflect well on the institution when annual rankings, such as those conducted by Maclean's and the Globe and Mail, are compiled each fall.
It should be noted that such ranking lists serve only as a snapshot view of the strengths and weaknesses of the various Canadian universities. Their methodologies are not without flaws, whether they use the quantitative approach of Maclean's or the Globe's student survey focus. They do, however, provide a starting point for debate and can be helpful to prospective students when used in such a way.
That the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge performed very well in each ranking indicates that we are doing an excellent job for our students, regardless the criteria used. We will not rest on our laurels and instead continue to confirm our place as one of the best academic choices in the country.
It has also been a big semester for the Pronghorn athletic program. On the heels of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's national championship women's rugby squad comes the Pronghorn men's hockey team, back in the national rankings for the first time in six years. Their six-game winning streak into the Christmas break leads fans to thinking about what might be possible in the season's second half.
Pronghorn teams may take a break from their schedules over the holidays but that doesn't mean they are not working. Operation Red Nose enters its 14th year here at the U of L, and I encourage everyone to consider using this valuable service while they are out enjoying the festive season.
Looking ahead to January, the U of L's new Strategic Plan will be put into action. Just approved recently by the General Faculties Council, the plan will now be presented to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Board of Governors. Congratulations
to co-chairs Andy Hakin (Vice President Academic and Provost) and Nancy Walker (Vice President Finance and Administration) and all the committee members who worked on this very important project.
The Christmas season is a wonderful time of year, and I want to wish you all a warm and joyous holiday.
