The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is throwing its doors open Saturday, giving potential students the opportunity to see all the U of L has to offer as they look to realize their academic dreams.

Open House 2019 takes place Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and boasts everything from campus tours to booth fairs, a peek at both a philosophy conference and a research symposium, multiple draws and prizes, a look at residence life, the new Science Commons and much, much more.

“We are so excited to welcome everyone to campus on Saturday,” says Natasha Buis Deering, director, Enrolment Services. “Our program of events has been designed to help prospective students map out their future goals, whether they are coming to uLethbridge fresh out of high school or checking out our graduate programming.”

Students are welcome to attend a session of the Western Canadian Philosophical Association Conference to get a taste of an academic conference, while those interested in the fine arts can check out the Crossing Boundaries Symposium and exhibition where displays, installations, demonstrations and performances present a look at some of the amazing work done by students on campus.

The U of L Library will be hosting a technology petting zoo, allowing students to interact with technologies available to all U of L students. There’s also the Agility Innovation Zone, a new technology area in Science Commons where students get access to equipment they can utilize in their studies, hobbies or future business ventures.

In addition to a draw for $1,000 in tuition credit, the chance to win one of 25 guaranteed beds in residence and on-the-spot admission, a new Legacy Draw (sponsored by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association) for up to $500 in textbooks from the uLethbridge Bookstore will be held for students with a parent who is a U of L alum.

“More than anything, this is the chance for people to come and ask questions, as many questions as they can think of, to get a real sense of what it will be like to be a uLethbridge student,” says Buis Deering. “We have so much to offer here and we can’t wait to show it off.”

Students looking to get a sample of life at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, including a virtual look at the new Science and Academic Building, should attend the annual Open House on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Open House is the perfect opportunity for prospective students to get a real look at our campus and ask all the questions they have about their post-secondary futures,” says Natasha Buis Deering (BA ’02), director of enrolment services. “Every Faculty and School is represented and on-the-spot admission is available for qualified high school applicants, excluding competitive admission programs. As well, application stations will be set up for students wishing to apply to uLethbridge.”

Of the many activities designed for prospective students, including campus tours and sessions on living in residence, funding a university education, study abroad opportunities and campus life, a fascinating virtual reality tour of the Destination Project’s Science and Academic Building is available. To start the day, students can attend a Planning Your Way session at 9:30 a.m. to map out the best way to take advantage of Open House.

“In partnership with KPMP Architects, Stantec, PCL Construction Management Ltd. and local virtual reality business, VRKADE Inc., students will be able to walk the halls of the new Science and Academic Building and see the state-of-the-art lab facilities they’ll be working in once the building opens for classes in fall 2019,” says Buis Deering.

Other special offers for students attending Open House include the opportunity to win a $1,000 tuition credit as well as a guaranteed bed in residence.

“Qualified applicants who apply for Fall 2018 admission, or who have already applied, will be entered into a draw for one $1,000 tuition credit,” adds Buis Deering. “We also have an opportunity for new, incoming students to win one of 25 beds in residence.”

Current uLethbridge students will be on hand to meet with prospective students and each of the school’s five Faculties – Arts & Science, Education, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, Management – and the School of Graduate Studies will operate hubs for students to explore.

“We want students to get an authentic look at what the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is all about,” says Buis Deering. “This is their chance to ask the questions and talk to the people who will help them make the most of their post-secondary experience.”

Students can make their future a reality at Open House

Anyone who’s considering attending the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge can get a 360-degree view of campus during the annual Open House on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“If you apply to attend uLethbridge for fall 2017, either before or at Open House, and you attend Open House, you will receive a pair of U of L virtual reality goggles,” says Natasha Buis Deering (BA ’02), director of enrolment services.

The Google Cardboard virtual reality (VR) goggles work with iPhones or Android phones and give the wearer a VR experience. The U of L has developed its own VR content for the occasion so students can view the campus and its landscape, student spaces and residence units.

To start off the day, prospective students can attend a ‘Planning Your Way’ session at 9:30 a.m. to map out the best way to take advantage of Open House.

“Our typical big draw is on-the-spot admission to qualified high school applicants, excluding competitive admission programs,” says Buis Deering. “In addition, application stations will be available for students who want to apply to uLethbridge.”

The Open House has sessions designed to inform prospective students about many aspects of university life, from living in residence and internship opportunities to research opportunities as an undergraduate student. A group of uLethbridge Shining Students, whose professors have recommended them as shining examples of the work and research done in their program, will display their work, talk about the research they’re involved in and speak to students about why they shine at uLethbridge.

“We’re hoping that, by showcasing our students, they will get that authentic message from their peers that helps them identify what research means,” she says.

Faculty hubs will also be operating during Open House. Students who want to explore several areas of study can attend mini-lectures to see what sparks their interest. The registrar’s office and Book Store will be open from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and the nursing simulation lab, addictions counselling labs, the Trading Room and the practice rooms, labs and studios in Fine Arts will also be open. For the first time, the School of Graduate Studies will participate in Open House to give prospective students an idea of the graduate student experience.

“This is truly a behind-the-scenes peek at what we offer,” she says. “This Open House should provide students a sense of what to expect in their higher education and how to make the most of it to be successful.”

Those who want to attend the Open House are encouraged to register, especially if they want to pick up an offer of admission.

U of L welcomes new and continuing students to campus

Before they attend their first lectures for the 2016 fall semester on Wednesday, Sept. 7, new ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students have the chance to check out their surroundings and get oriented to university life.

In addition to the more than 5,800 students who will return to campus as continuing students, more than 2,500 new students are expected to arrive at the U of L. New students are invited to attend New Student Orientation (NSO) on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 5 and 6.

“We are extremely excited for the holiday Monday and we look forward to meeting students at our NSO program,” says Natasha Buis Deering (BA '02), director of enrolment services. “More than 70 per cent of students are from outside of southern Alberta so orientation programming plays a critical role in welcoming students, not just to our university but also our community.”

From 8 to 9 a.m. on Monday, Julie (Greidanus) Taylor (BA '05) and Lowell Taylor (BFA '04), the two alumni who participated in CTV’s The Amazing Race Canada will be on hand to welcome new students. NSO gets underway with the Bullhorn drum group providing the official kickoff at 8:30 a.m. Commencement, the formal ceremony where students are welcomed to the academic community at the U of L, begins at 9:05 a.m. Danielle Tait (BMgt '10), the inaugural Young Alumnus Achievement Award recipient, is the keynote speaker at 9:40 a.m. She will talk about the importance of following one’s passions, her own experiences with liberal education and the value of learning beyond the classroom.

Following Commencement, new students can check out a variety of sessions designed to acquaint them with the U of L. Session topics include how to get involved on campus, academic expectations, financial management, support services, safety initiatives and study strategies. Sessions continue on Tuesday morning until 11:30 a.m. Starting at 11:45 a.m., students can meet the members of their respective faculty. The day wraps up with a scavenger hunt from 2 to 3 p.m.

Because a new student’s first week is packed with an overwhelming amount of information, Encore Orientation sessions are offered during the first semester at times when students can really use the information. For example, a session on coping with homesickness is offered after the Thanksgiving weekend and a session on study skills is offered before midterm exams.

“NSO sets students up, both academically and personally, to make the most of their post-secondary journey and a strong orientation program has proven to increase student success in the classroom and throughout their degrees,” says Buis Deering.

Following NSO, the U of L Students’ Union (ULSU) has planned three days of fun for Fresh Fest 2016. The Fresh Fest Luau on Thursday, Sept. 8 goes from 1 to 5 p.m. on ‘The Hill’ located on the south side of Lot E. Students can enjoy the inflatable obstacle course, music, giveaways and a giant 100-foot slip ‘n slide. A Fresh Pizza Party follows from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at The Zoo. A cabaret is scheduled for Friday night and the Fresh U Jamboree, featuring live music and entertainment from 4 to 11 p.m., will be held Saturday in The Grove. The line-up of talent includes Mother Mother, Coleman Hell, The Dudes, Shred Kelly, The Silkstones, Awd Fellas and Millz Skillz. About 1,900 students are expected to attend.

“Fresh Fest is an amazing way for new and returning students to come together and celebrate the beginning of another school year. Our aim is to provide students at the U of L with a safe, fun, and unforgettable experience while they attend post-secondary,” says Royal Adkin, the ULSU vice-president of student affairs. “The Students’ Union is always committed to putting the safety of students first, regardless of how large Fresh Fest becomes. The SU strongly believes that Fresh Fest encourages students to have fun in a safe and responsible way.”

Revitalized future-student website designed to meet the needs of today’s web savvy students

A new ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge future-student website has been designed to be mobile-friendly and responsive to the needs of students beginning their academic careers.

The website, located at www.uleth.ca/future-student,was developed with the future student user experience in mind.

“We’re really excited about this site and how it allows us to present an authentic view of the uLethbridge student experience,” says Natasha Buis Deering, director for uLethbridge’s Enrolment Services. “Our previous recruitment content management system was no longer meeting the needs of our future students. We were limited in the manner we could present information and the site was not searchable, thereby limiting the ability of our users to easily access the information they needed.”

The new website is mobile-friendly and has created an interactive user environment that is easy to navigate. It is also the first phase of a larger website revitalization at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

“The overwhelming majority of visitors to our previous future-student website accessed the site via their smartphone or tablet, with less than 10 per cent of visitors coming to the site from either desktop or laptop computers,” says Buis Deering. “This site is optimized for mobile platforms, meaning our future students, guidance counselors, parents, everyone can easily access a full user experience. Today’s students demand the information they need regardless of where they are and on what device they are using.”

She adds that students are extremely web savvy and demand authenticity from websites. Enrolment Services has responded by presenting the uLethbridge experience from the perspective of current students and recent graduates.

“Prospective students don’t want to hear us telling them what to expect from their educational experience — who better to talk about student-experience than actual uLethbridge students? We gave them a voice and let them tell their stories. It’s very powerful.”

Other features of the website include an updated look that ties together print and digital materials used by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ to create a cohesive future-student experience. It will also have behind-the-scenes capabilities to help the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ track users as they make their way through the site, further allowing the institution to respond quickly to user preferences.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge to play role in flood recovery efforts

On Wednesday, June 26, 2013, the Alberta government formally requested the U of L house a number of evacuees while cleanup efforts to their communities continue.

It is expected that evacuees will start arriving at our campus later this afternoon. As you can imagine, this is a stressful time for individuals and families who have lost many of their possessions and remain unable to assess the damage to their homes.

In an effort to help transition evacuees to their temporary homes, the U of L is seeking volunteers from its campus community to welcome and familiarize evacuees with the campus. Employees who are able to volunteer during work hours will continue to be paid. Volunteers should consult with their supervisor before committing.
