Leah Zelin the new face of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Calgary campus

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Calgary Campus is excited to introduce its new Campus Manager, Leah Zelin.

Zelin is a born-and-raised Calgarian with an extensive background in post-secondary operations and leadership. She begins her one-year term on Monday, Oct. 17, 2016.

“After visiting the campus, I felt a great sense of community. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone there, being a part of the team and contributing to this learning community.”

In 1991, Zelin graduated from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary with a Bachelor of Arts and then went on to earn a Master of Arts in English from UBC in ‘93 and an MBA from the U of C in ‘04. She’s also a Certified Professional Coach, and has training in mediation and conflict resolution.

The experience Zelin brings to the position is working with TEC Canada as a Thought Leadership Strategist and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta Calgary Centre as an External Relations Officer. She spent over six years with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary where she worked with the Faculty of Education as Director of Student and Academic Services, and before that she worked with Continuing Education as Director of Special Sessions.

“Having worked on a satellite campus with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta and leading a team of seven with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary in the Continuing Education department, there is a sense of familiarity having worked in similar educational environments before. I know I will enjoy my time at the Calgary Campus."

In 2007, Zelin was awarded the “U Make a Difference Award” for her outstanding contributions to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary working and learning environments. Lorne Williams, Northern Campuses Assistant Dean, knows they’ve made the right decision adding her to the team.

“Leah brings experience with adult learners, has worked on a satellite campus, and values people," he says. "She’ll be a great complement to our current staff during her term. We are excited to welcome her to the team.”

Kanewischer recognized as 2016 Calgary Campus Instructor of the Year

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Calgary Campus is excited to announce the recipient of the 2016 Instructor of the Year - Blake Kanewischer (BMgt ’06).

Kanewischer has been an instructor on the Calgary Campus since 2011, teaching Information Systems Management, but that’s not where his U of L story begins. In 2001, Kanewischer, a working, mature student, attended the Calgary Campus and earned his bachelor of management in 2006.

Blake Kanewischer has been an instructor on the Calgary Campus since 2011, teaching Information Systems Management.

“I attended the U of L Calgary Campus because I could work and attend school. The instructors were good, Lorne Williams, Kelly Williams-Whitt, YJ Bao, Terry Prociuk, and so many more knocked it out of the park when it came to teaching.”

In addition to his BMgt degree, Kanewischer also holds a computer science diploma from Medicine Hat College, an applied technology degree from NAIT, a general studies degree from Athabasca ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and an MBA from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary. He has many certifications as well, including: Project Management Professional, Information Systems Professional and Information Technology Certified Professional, to name a few.

His entry into becoming an instructor would come in the final semester of his MBA program where Kanewischer thought he’d be a great mentor on the Calgary Campus.

“I went down to Lorne Williams’s office, the Calgary Campus director at the time, and said, I’m here, I can be a mentor. However, Lorne saw more in me and asked if I had ever thought about teaching. So, I sent in my resume and that following Monday and I was asked to teach in the fall. I didn’t know what I was getting into, but I survived, and I learned a thing or two along the way. Before I knew it, Lorne asked if I could come back to teach again in January.”

Williams had taught Kanewischer in three of his classes and saw his capabilities.

“Blake distinguished himself in his undergrad program,” says Williams, now the assistant dean, northern campuses. “In the first classroom we shared, he submitted a paper that drew the attention of faculty members on the main campus and academic colleagues from the United States. There was obviously a lot of potential there.”

Now, beginning his fifth year with the Calgary Campus as a sessional instructor, Kanewischer is flipping the classroom.

“I worked for 17 years as a systems analyst for the City of Calgary and the private sector. Now I can take that experience and add value to the classroom and add real life to the textbook,” he says. “I know what it’s like to be a mature student and working. By the start of class at 6 p.m., most students have already worked a long day. Who wants to listen to me talk for three hours? I don’t! That’s why I experiment in my teaching by pre-recording lectures, having blogs and emphasizing collaborative learning.”

Collaborative learning is key in Kanewischer’s classroom.

“In information systems, students can’t see that there’s this big iceberg chunk under the water. We only see the little bit of the iceberg that’s above the water. My job is to help show what’s beneath the surface. But the info systems industry changes so constantly that even students bring new things to the table that I can learn from. They learn from each other, they learn from me, we learn together.”

Board approves multiple faculty, staff and administrative appointments

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors recently convened and approved a number of faculty, staff and administrative appointments that are scheduled to officially take effect July 1, 2015.

Following is a summary of these appointments.

Vice-Provost & Associate Vice-President (Academic) - Dr. Lesley Brown

Dr. Lesley Brown has been appointed for a five-year term as the Vice-Provost & Associate Vice-President (Academic).

Currently the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Interim Vice-President (Research) and a professor of kinesiology, Brown first came to the U of L in 1997 as an assistant professor in the department of Kinesiology and Physical Education following her post-doctoral studies at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Oregon. Brown's research portfolio has been focused on the aging process, balance, falling, fear of falling and Parkinson's Disease.

Brown was appointed Associate Vice-President (Research) in 2011 and served in that role until 2014 when she assumed responsibility as the Interim Vice-President (Research). She has led some very important initiatives while serving in that role, including being the driving force behind the development of AGILITY and its subsequent launch. Her passion for entrepreneurship and innovation will see her play a lead role in the continued development of AGILITY as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ moves forward.

Dean, Health Sciences - Dr. Christopher Hosgood

Dr. Chris Hosgood has been reappointed as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences for a further five-year term.

Hosgood, the former Chair of the Department of History, will be taking on his third term as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences as he presided over the transition of the Faculty from a School in 2009. He played a major role in the expansion of both student enrolments and Faculty programs, including the recent introduction of the Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation program, and saw the Faculty through its move into Markin Hall.

A Co-Chair on the Health Sciences Placement Network Management Committee as well as a member of the Alberta SPOR Steering Committee, Hosgood was recently appointed to the Alberta Health Research Task Force.

Dean, Graduate Studies - Dr. Robert Wood

Dr. Robert Wood has been reappointed as Dean, Graduate Studies for a further five-year term.

Wood had served in the role of Dean since January 2011 and was previously the Interim Head of the School of Graduate Studies and Chair of the Department of Sociology.

A sociology researcher and faculty member since 2000, Wood is the author or co-author of two books and numerous research articles on gambling issues, and has recently produced a trio of journal articles examining various aspects of problem gambling. He is currently the President of the Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies, a post he accepted February 1, 2015 after serving the previous two years as the organization's vice-president.

Tier I Board of Governors Research Chair (Organizations, Culture, and Society) - Dr. Paul Vasey

Dr. Paul Vasey, a professor in the Department of Psychology, conducts cross-species and cross-cultural research to answer the question: If reproduction is the engine that drives evolution, why engage in non-conceptive sex?

For the past decade he has done research on the development and evolution of female homosexual behaviour in free-ranging Japanese monkeys at various sites in Japan. He also studies the development and evolution of male same-sex sexual attraction in humans at field sites in Samoa, Japan and Canada.

Tier I Board of Governors Research Chair (Organizations, Culture, and Society) - Dr. Claudia Malacrida

Dr. Claudia Malacrida is a sociologist and oral historian well-known for her investigations on power and the construction of difference historically and in the present. This focus has led to investigations of eugenics and institutionalization abuses in Alberta at the Michener Centre; comparative projects examining the challenges disabled women face in their sexual, relational and family lives; and, questions of power and medicalization in local childbirth practices.

In each area, she is concerned about how seemingly personal and embodied experiences are constrained and produced through public policy, social attitudes and professional practice.

Tier I Board of Governors Research Chair (Earth and Environment) - Dr. Larry Flanagan

Dr. Larry Flanagan, a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences, is being reappointed as a Tier I Board of Governors Research Chair. He gained international recognition for his contributions to addressing carbon cycling and climate change.

His research program involves applying a range of techniques from eco-physiology and ecosystem ecology to study how plants and ecosystems acclimate to environmental change. This includes field studies with plants growing in their native habitats, in addition to lab and controlled environment studies.

Understanding these fundamental processes provides the basis for modelling and predicting plant and ecosystem response to global climate change.

Tier I Board of Governors Research Chair (Healthy Futures) - Dr. Gerlinde Metz

Dr. Gerlinde Metz is a researcher in the Department of Neuroscience, and is being appointed as a Tier I Board of Governors Research Chair (Health Futures) for a period of five years.

Her research program focuses on the influence of experience and environment on behaviour and brain plasticity. Her work showed that stress affects motor system function, risk of Parkinson's disease and recovery from stroke. This research indicated that adverse experience at any time in life can become a predisposing or precipitating factor of disease. More recently, her laboratory has developed unique models to explore transgenerational inheritance of stress responses. Through transgenerational programming, experience in parents, grandparents and beyond can influence health and disease from early development to old age.

Tier I Board of Governors Research Chair (Origins and Explorations) - Dr. Stacey Wetmore

Dr. Stacey Wetmore is a recognized leader in computational chemistry, and has been appointed a Tier I Board of Governors Research Chair (Origins and Explorations) for the period April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2022.

She has successfully established a vigorous and prolific research program exploring the reactions between DNA and various harmful chemicals in order to understand how DNA is damaged, and how enzymes in our body repair DNA by chemically removing the damaged sections of DNA.

An understanding of DNA damage and repair processes in our bodies will aid the design of new ways to diagnose, treat and prevent disease. No other Canadian researcher is studying these important (health-related) areas using computational methods. The range of approaches, close collaborations with experimental labs, and systematic attack of entire classes of biomolecules has distinguished Wetmore's research on the international stage.

Assistant Dean, Northern Campuses - Lorne Williams

Lorne Williams has been reappointed to serve as the Assistant Dean (Northern Campuses) for a further three-year term.

A respected alumnus and member of the U of L Honour Society, Williams was first named Acting Assistant Dean (Northern Campuses) in 2012. He has more than 20 years of U of L experience, including more than a decade of work in the Calgary market as a director, instructor and co-ordinator at the U of L Calgary campus. During his time there, he has won six teaching awards.

Williams consults widely on team building, leadership and corporate culture for public, private and not-for-profit organizations of all sizes. In the past year, he has served as the opening speaker at both the Faculty of Management Student PD Conference and the Canada/China Trade and Investment Forum, and was invited to give the keynote address at the Keeping People Important - MacEwan ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ PD Day.

Associate Vice-President (Research) - Dr. Matthew Letts

Dr. Matthew Letts has been extended as the Associate Vice-President (Research) for a period of six months, June 30, 2015 to December 31, 2015.

A faculty member in the Department of Geography, Letts is an accomplished researcher who is currently working on two projects. One, sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is studying plant physiological response to environmental stress in semiarid ecosystems. He is also part of the team that is currently working on Functional flows: a practical strategy for healthy rivers, as sponsored by Alberta Innovates - Environmental Solutions.

Chancellor Emerita - Dr. Shirley McClellan

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's 12th Chancellor, Dr. Shirley McClellan was named Chancellor Emerita.

McClellan served as Chancellor from 2011 to 2015 and was a strong advocate for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge over that time.

A veteran Alberta politician and former deputy premier of the Province of Alberta, McClellan had long been involved in bringing further education to rural areas, serving on the board of directors for the Alberta Association of Continuing Education and the Canadian Association for Continuing Education.

Supporting Our Students plays role in student achievement

On May 29 and 30, the campus will be dressed up by caps and gowns, flowers and photographs as the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge community comes together to celebrate convocation and the accomplishments of more than 1,400 graduates.

The next Supporting Our Students campaign milestone is to achieve 250 donors, another 30 participants, before May 31, 2014.

Many people play a supportive role in the life of a student. From friends and family to faculty and staff, a strong support system is crucial to student success. Less conspicuous in the everyday life of a student, scholarships and bursaries also play an important part in helping students achieve their dreams and aspirations.

In 2013, approximately 2,100 scholarships and bursaries were awarded to students, totalling more than $3.5 million. Part of that contribution comes from faculty, staff and retirees who donate to the Supporting Our Students campaign. So, as the 2013-2014 campaign comes to a close, SOS Co-Chairs Lorne Williams, dean of Northern Campuses, and Linda Embury (now retired) want to remind the U of L community that their ongoing support is essential.

In summarizing the 2013/14 campaign, Williams is both proud and optimistic.

“Convocation is a good reminder to reflect on all of our accomplishments, and that includes those of the SOS committee. By the end of 2013, 377 faculty, staff and retirees were participating by supporting students and together we raised more than $177,000,” says Williams. “Each January we set new goals for the upcoming calendar year, so that we can ensure the dollars are there when students need. So our next milestone is to achieve 250 donors, another 30 participants, before May 31, 2014.”

As our campus community gets ready to celebrate convocation, Williams leaves an important reminder.

“As you participate in Convocation, please remember that each and every student is there because of the contributions of many individuals, and I believe we should all take great pride in the part we play. Our job as instructors and administrators is to facilitate student success in ways that most benefit the individual. Giving to SOS, in large or small ways, helps students go forward and become positive forces in the world. So if you haven’t yet made your SOS gift, there is still time”, Williams emphasizes. “Please join the SOS Committee members, your colleagues and peers, and donate to help students succeed."

Williams says support offers a brighter big picture

In the 20-plus years that Lorne Williams has worked and studied at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, he’s seen some significant changes. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has grown, introduced new programs and Faculties, expanded to Alberta’s two largest cities, and become renowned as one of the top-research universities in the country. But for all the positive changes that have occurred, Williams says there is one particular thing close to his heart that requires our collective attention – the stress level of many students on campus.

“Having worked every day with student residents in the past, teaching in the classroom and having lived the university experience myself, I know how difficult student life can be,” says Williams. “It’s more expensive than ever to attend university and students today are under more conflicting demands than ever before. A little bit of assistance goes a long way, and the benefits are something we reap as a society.”

Williams is a long-time monthly contributor to the U of L’s Supporting Our Student (SOS) fund – a cause he feels so passionate about he is the co-Chair of the 2013/14 SOS campaign.

“Students are the reason we’re here,” says Williams about U of L faculty and staff. “Our job as instructors and administrators is to facilitate student success, and that goal has to reach beyond the classroom. In giving to SOS we help students go forward and become positive forces in the external community.”

As assistant dean of northern campuses, a position he accepted after more than a decade as a director, instructor and coordinator at the U of L Calgary campus, Williams has a unique perspective on student life. He says the realities of achieving a post-secondary education are especially diverse and complicated for students.

“There is a huge non-traditional student base today. Many students work full time while pursuing their education, out of sheer necessity in a lot of cases. They have families and other major responsibilities on top of their course work. It’s a lot to juggle, and students struggle because of it. Anything we can do to help alleviate some of that pressure is important and worthwhile, and contributing to SOS does that.”

Having earned four degrees, including a Bachelor of Management and Master of Education from the U of L, a Bachelor of Arts from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary and a Master of Arts from Royal Roads ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, all while balancing a professional career and family, Williams personally empathizes with students and sees his contributions to SOS as a small part of a bigger picture.

“��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ education is meant for everyone. We have a role to fulfill, an obligation to society – we exist to make communities better,” he says. “The lifeblood of any community is the people who live there, and the U of L is a community filled with citizens who take what they learn here out to the world. We have a responsibility to foster our people. Contributing to SOS, in large or small ways, is a fantastic way of doing that.”

As Co-Chairs of the 2013/14 Supporting Our Students (SOS) campaign, Williams (BMgt ’98, MEd ’07) and Embury are excited to bring the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge community together in support of scholarships and bursaries for students.

“I feel honoured to be Co-Chair,” says Embury, assistant to the associate vice-president (HR and Administration) Human Resources. “I want to be a role model to my colleagues. If we all give, it adds up.”

The annual SOS campaign allows U of L faculty, staff and retirees the opportunity to contribute to student awards. SOS participants have enabled an incredible 2,000 scholarships and bursaries to be awarded to deserving students in the past year alone.

According to the Co-Chairs, the campaign has far-reaching impact.

“Students are the reason we are all here. By giving to SOS, we can help students go forward and be positive forces in the external community,” says Williams, the assistant dean of northern campuses.

The Co-Chairs ask that you join them in contributing at a level suitable to your circumstances and to an area on campus that holds meaning for you.

“Every little bit helps. All it takes is a few dollars a month to make a difference,” explains Embury.

Williams and Embury understand the challenges faced by many members of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community at this time, but maintain a sense of pride in the U of L and optimism for the future.

“I know that times are tough as we recover from the southern Alberta flood and face budget cuts,” says Williams, “but the way that we’re getting through these challenges shows our resilience and our collaborative spirit. I believe those same qualities are at the heart of the SOS campaign. Now, more than ever, we need to put students first.”

U of L Calgary campus temporarily relocated to U of C

Due to the flooding in Calgary and the continuing challenges posed by the current closure of Bow Valley College, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Calgary Campus has found temporary instructional space in order to proceed with Summer Session II/III classes.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary has agreed to host the U of L Calgary Campus until we are able to return to our home in Bow Valley College. Our estimated return to BVC is unknown at this time, but we are hopeful that we will know more in the coming days. The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary's address is: 2500 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Drive NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1N4.

On Tuesday, July 2, 2013 the Calgary Campus administrative team began setting up temporary office space at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary that will be accessible to students and instructors. Our temporary space is located on the 2nd floor of the MacKimmie Link, behind the escalators and staircase. In this space, we will be able to provide support for Summer Session II/III.

Faculty, staff and students affected by this relocation have been communicated to directly by e-mail.

Williams earns interim appointment

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Board of Governors has confirmed the appointment of Lorne Williams as the Interim Assistant Dean of Northern Campuses, effective May 1.

Reporting to the Vice-President Academic and Provost, and working closely with the faculties and the School of Graduate Studies on campus, Williams will provide a voice at Dean's Council and a perspective on the U of L's presence in Calgary and Edmonton.

Currently, more than 1,000 students are enrolled in the two locations, which have been in operation since 1996. Courses are taught primarily in the evenings and on weekends and geared to working professionals.

"We are pleased to have Lorne move into this new position, given his long-term service to the U of L, and his excellent work as a past director and current faculty member of our Calgary campus," says Dr. Andy Hakin, the U of L's Vice-President, Academic and Provost. "The U of L is committed to serving students in Calgary and Edmonton, and this new position will provide more resources for those campuses as we move to take advantage of future opportunities."

Williams moves to this new position with more than 20 years of U of L experience, including more than a decade of work in the Calgary market as a director, instructor and co-ordinator at the U of L Calgary campus. During his time there, he won six teaching awards.

As well, Williams has served on the Faculty Association executive, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Senate, the executive of the Alumni Association, and was recently inducted into the U of L Alumni Honour Society.

Williams spent nearly 15 years in managerial positions in the housing and hospitality business units at the U of L and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary, while furthering his education with four degrees: A Bachelor of Arts, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary; a Bachelor of Management, U of L; a Master of Arts, Leadership and Training, Royal Roads ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ; and a Master of Education, U of L.

He also consults widely on team building, leadership and corporate culture for public, private and not-for-profit organizations of all sizes. Personally, he invests volunteer time with the Calgary Board of Education, Kamp Kiwanis and Scouts Canada.

Before arriving at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Williams helped administer the Olympic Village during the 1988 Winter Olympic games and worked in the political arena for several years, serving two Prime Ministers and a provincial Premier in Calgary and Ottawa.

"I'm excited to work with the Directors, staff and faculty members in Calgary and Edmonton as we move ahead," says Williams. "We have a number of opportunities to take advantage of as we reinforce our presence in Calgary and Edmonton, and I am looking forward to bringing more of the U of L further north."

U of L's Calgary campus now at Bow Valley College

More than 700 students at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Calgary Campus have started their January term in Bow Valley College's (BVC) newly renovated downtown North Campus.

This move builds on the efforts of both institutions to collaborate and provide better access to post-secondary education in Calgary.

"By increasing access to quality education in downtown Calgary, the U of L and BVC are working together to meet the needs of Calgarians," says U of L President Mike Mahon. "By providing options for individuals interested in pursuing post-secondary education, our two institutions help ensure that more students will have the knowledge and skills to be successful."

The U of L has been offering Faculty of Management programming in Calgary since 1996, and for the past 15 years has steadily increased its enrolment and course offerings. There has also been a continual progression of transfer agreements, which allow even more Albertans to take advantage of convenient evening and weekend course offerings.

"We're delighted to welcome the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge into our newly refurbished campus," says Sharon Carry, president and CEO, Bow Valley College. "This partnership is a significant step in the creation of Campus Alberta South — a set of principles developed by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Technology to provide a seamless and unified system of lifelong learning for Albertans."

Program growth, both at the U of L's previous location at SAIT, and at the U of L, spurred the move to larger facilities at BVC.

"To best serve our growing number of students – from BVC, SAIT and elsewhere in Calgary – the U of L decided that moving was a viable option," says Lorne Williams, director of the U of L's Calgary campus. "In turn, this allows SAIT to expand its on-campus space to serve its students. We've had an excellent relationship with our Calgary students over the past 15 years, and it will continue, but in a different location. We already feel very much a part of the BVC family, and look forward to growing our new partnership."

Members of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Calgary Campus recently capped off a very positive 15-year relationship with SAIT Polytechnic by establishing a new transfer scholarship.

The scholarship program is for graduates from SAIT who choose the U of L, and will be made available to transfer students registering at the U of L in the Fall 2011 semester.

The U of L is relocating its offices to a downtown Calgary location in partnership with Bow Valley College beginning in January 2011. Program growth spurred the move, both at SAIT and the
U of L.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Calgary Campus was established in 1996 to meet the changing needs of a working student population who wanted classes during evenings and weekends. What started as a small satellite campus for the Faculty of Management, now offers courses across several disciplines. Close to 700 students were registered in classes this semester.

The Calgary campus office is moving to Rocky Mountain Plaza (Suite 1100, Rocky Mountain Plaza, 615 Macleod Trail SE, T2G 4T8), effective Dec. 20. Starting in January, all classes will be held at Bow Valley College.
