The list of Canadian artists who have been recognized is impressive. I look at the list and I can&rsquo;t help but think of how many others deserve the honour more than me.&rdquo;<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:250px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/Headshot 1.jpg" alt=""></div></p><p>Lethbridge has a reputation for supporting and recognizing visual artists, she says. Janet Cardiff and George Bures Millers, former U of L instructors, were winners of the Venice Biennale, the world&rsquo;s premier contemporary art exhibition, and David Hoffos (BFA &rsquo;94) has exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada.</p><p>&ldquo;Organizations like the Southern Alberta Art Gallery also help create a strong artistic community and an environment conducive to creating art,&rdquo; says Harnett. &ldquo; It&rsquo;s a fantastic art community and it has great outreach to other artists across Canada with the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge&rsquo;s ART NOW lecture series.&rdquo;</p><p>Harnett joined the U of L in 2002. Originally from Saskatchewan, she is a member of the Carry the Kettle Band. She moved to Edmonton at an early age and eventually completed an MFA in Drawing at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta.</p><p>&ldquo;I think my first language was visual. If art is a language, and I believe it is, that&rsquo;s how I conceptualize things first. It&rsquo;s articulated in my mind and then it comes out as a response in my art practice,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;I think through the senses and so my engagement with the world is about envisioning what that would mean in a two-dimensional substrate.&rdquo;</p><p>She shares her knowledge of the language of visual art with her students as she teaches them about drawing, helping them learn to look, to think about what they see and to express their vision through art.</p><p>&ldquo;Visual art is a fast medium. People can read an image in a very short period of time and say &lsquo;Oh, I can see how many different ways that person is thinking.&rsquo; The vast ways of layering the image or content is something that I think about. How many ways can I have somebody read an image?&rdquo; says Harnett.</p><p>Harnett&rsquo;s election to the Royal Canadian Academy will be formally recognized at its annual meeting, held this year in Montreal from May 14 to 17. At the same time, an exhibition of Harnett&rsquo;s work, and other newly elected members, will be hosted at a Montreal public institution.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-city-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/city/montreal" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Montreal</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/city/edmonton" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Edmonton</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-company-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Company:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/company/rca" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">RCA</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/royal-canadian-academy-arts" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Royal Canadian Academy of Arts</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/tanya-harnett" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Tanya Harnett</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Artist Tanya Harnett elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts" class="rdf-meta"></span> Thu, 07 May 2015 21:49:15 +0000 caroline.zentner 7195 at /unews Faculty Artists & Friends Series a real treat /unews/article/faculty-artists-friends-series-real-treat <div class="field field-name-field-op-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:creator schema:creator"><div class="view view-openpublish-related-content view-id-openpublish_related_content view-display-id-block_1 view-dom-id-75fe7090f97fbc0934d27632369b328d"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"> <div class="views-field views-field-title"> <span class="views-label views-label-title">by</span> <span class="field-content"><a href="/unews/profile/trevor-kenney">Trevor Kenney</a></span> </div> <div class="views-field views-field-created"> <span class="field-content">September 11, 2013</span> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>With concerts that range from a spellbinding performance of Russian post-Romantic music to an internationally renowned violist and contemporary chamber music performed by Montreal&rsquo;s In Extensio, the Faculty Artists and Friends Series provides one of the most diverse music series in the city.</p><p>&ldquo;We are featuring a nice mix of faculty performers and guest artists, including a number of exciting collaborations,&rdquo; says Dr. Paul Sanden, organizing committee member. &ldquo; For instance, long-time Lethbridge musician and faculty member, Dale Ketcheson, is presenting an evening of music featuring several of his musical friends and collaborators from the community on Oct. 19. Her international awards include the Prize of the Congress for Jewish Culture, the Sholem Aleichem Prize, the Atran Prize, the John Glassco Prize for Literary Translation and the Manger Prize - Israel's highest award for Yiddish literature.<br> <br> <br> Included with the poems is an introduction Rosenfarb had written for a poetry collection she was planning to publish in the early 1970s. For unknown reasons this collection was never published.<br> <br> "My mother began her writing career as a poet. She published three books of poetry in Yiddish during her lifetime. She had always wanted this poetry to be available to English readers as well, which is why she translated most of the poems into English," says Morgentaler. "It is not clear to me why she never published these translations, but now that she is gone, I feel it is important for me to complete the job for her."<br> <br> Rosenfarb was 16 when she and her family were interned in the Lodz ghetto after the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939. When the ghetto was liquidated, she was deported to Auschwitz and later Bergen Belsen, before being liberated by British forces in 1945. After spending many homeless years in Europe, she moved to Canada in 1950, settling in Montreal.<br> <br> As a child, Rosenfarb's father encouraged her to write about her experiences. Considering the impact of the years she spent in occupied Poland and in concentration camps, these themes became central to her life's works.<br> <br> Exile at Last contains poems from all three of Rosenfarb's poetry books, including Di balade fun nekhtikn vald (The Ballad of Yesterday's Forest), Rosenfarb's first published collection of poems, composed when Rosenfarb was incarcerated in the Lodz ghetto. The book also contains more personal poems from Rosenfarb's last collection of poetry, Aroys fun gan eydn (Out of Paradise]. The poems are arranged to follow the chronological order of the events of Rosenfarb's life.<br> <br> "My mother and I were more than mother and daughter. We were a team, a translating team. She did the writing in Yiddish and then we worked closely together on the translations," says Morgentaler. "I feel that I owe her a debt and that debt can only be repaid by publishing her work in English &ndash; something she clearly wanted, despite her love of and fidelity to Yiddish, the language of her lost, annihilated home."<br> <br> Morgentaler is a Professor of English at the U of L where she teaches 19th Century British and American literature, as well as Jewish literature. She is the translator of much of Rosenfarb's work including the play The Bird of the Ghetto, which was staged by the Threshold Theatre of Toronto in the fall of 2012. She was the translator in collaboration with the author of the three volumes of Rosenfarb's The Tree of Life: A Trilogy of Life in the Lodz Ghetto. Her translation of Rosenfarb's book of short stories, Survivors: Seven Short Stories, won the Helen and Stan Vine Canadian Jewish Book Award in 2005 and the Modern Language Association's Fenia and Yaakov Leviant Memorial Prize in Yiddish Studies in 2006.<br> <br> The book, published by Guernica Editions, is now on sale at Chapters and at the U of L bookstore, and can be ordered from amazon and directly from the publisher at: <a href="mailto:michaelmirolla@guernicaeditions.com" rel="nofollow">michaelmirolla@guernicaeditions.com</a>.<br> <br> <strong>NOTE</strong>: Chava Rosenfarb was recognized by the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge in 2006 when she was presented with an honorary degree. While Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ administration, faculty, students and the City of Lethbridge all agreed that a westside location matched the vision of the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s founders, the provincial government did not originally accept this recommendation, and instead proposed a local referendum to determine the site.</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/wutzke-45th.jpg" alt="SU protest" title="Days after SU President Richard Wutzke spent an evening in a Lethbridge jail, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬&amp;#039;s first graduation class, along with faculty, marched in city streets to protest the proposed referendum that would decide the future site of the U of L campus."><div class="image-caption">Days after SU President Richard Wutzke spent an evening in a Lethbridge jail, the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬&#039;s first graduation class, along with faculty, marched in city streets to protest the proposed referendum that would decide the future site of the U of L campus.</div></div></p><p>With philosophical lines drawn, Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ students took to the streets, and on one fateful night, to the avenue in front of Lethbridge MLA John Landeryou's house. It wasn't long before Wutzke, the Students' Union president, was being hauled away by police, to be joined later by his right-hand man, Arthur Joevenazzo.</p><p>"Looking at it from the age of 63 and looking at it from the age of 18 are two different perspectives entirely," says Wutzke, now an artist living in the Laurentian Mountains north of Montreal.</p><p>"Now when you look at it and you see a campus with 8,500 students and a third of the city's population is on the westside, it all seems so obvious that this was the right direction to go. But if you were picking up the tab for some kind of a pipe dream like this, I think you might say, "Wait a minute now"."</p><p>Student politics of the day had grown more and more confrontational and Wutzke admits he was elected SU president as an activist candidate. He says that as the debate ramped up, a culmination of factors led students out into the streets that evening.</p><p>"We were really keen on this type of activity," he says, noting that he and Joevenazzo were the debate champions of Alberta at the time. "There's a lot of testosterone pumping away in your veins and you're just looking for a scrap somewhere."</p><p>Fueled by what he calls "hearsay" and inspired by "the struggles of Mahatma Ghandi and the readings of Henry David Thoreau", an evening meeting with Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ faculty was the impetus for a placard-waving group to descend upon Landeryou's home.</p><p>"Today I'd be embarrassed to go forging out on an expedition like this with the kind of information we had," chuckles Wutzke. "We felt that somehow Mr. Landeryou was in cahoots with landowners surrounding the junior college who all stood to make very handsome profits by the expropriation of their property. Now, like I say, that is what we believed at the time and that's the information we acted on and we did so with righteous indignation."</p><p>When police arrived, they quickly identified Wutzke as a ringleader and put him in a police cruiser.</p><p>"I was taken into the police car and then the car was surrounded by students," says Wutzke. "Everybody sat down on the asphalt to prevent the police car from moving. Finally they basically threatened to run people over and they left with me. As soon as I was taken off the scene, my most able henchman, Arthur Joevenazzo, took up the charge and started the chanting again. They came back and picked him up too."</p><p>Wutzke and Joevenazzo were actually never arrested, as lore would have it. They were never charged, fingerprinted or put into a cell. Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ President Sam Smith got out of bed, drove down to the police station and vouched for the duo's character and Wutzke's father eventually came to drive him home.</p><p>Two days later, following the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬'s first convocation, a street march was held, culminating with a rally at Galt Gardens. Days later, with provincial eyes now on Lethbridge and its rebellious students, the government backed off and the westside plan was ratified.</p><p>"If I hadn't been there, somebody else would have been there," says Wutzke modestly. "What's important is that in that time in history, the students, even though they would not be the recipients of this glorious new campus, acted and didn't sit on their hands and change occurred. When I look back at that, there is a sense of pride. Not only that I had some personal role in it but that I was part of a student body that really had the guts to get up and be heard."</p><p>It's a spirit he continues to see today, and one he applauds.</p><p>"Sometimes students really get on your nerves because they are always agitating about something, but it shows you it's a very essential part of the democratic process."</p><p><strong><em>This story first appeared in the February 2012 edition of The Legend.
