Play Day initiative wins awards

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Play Day initiative recently received a silver award from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE) - a national organization that acknowledges excellence in alumni relations, communications, community outreach and development programming at universities and colleges across Canada.

The event also won a bronze award in a similar category from the international Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VIII, which is made up of post-secondary educational institutions from western Canada and the northwestern United States.

Play Day is designed to promote opportunities for play for southern Alberta children and families.

The free event, sponsored by 1st Choice Savings and Credit Union, drew nearly 5,000 people to campus on Family Day, which took place February 18, 2013.

"Play Day is a tremendous example of the importance the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge places on community engagement," says U of L President Dr. Mike Mahon. "Encouraging our children to play is important from a developmental point of view and events like this are important from a community point of view."

The event was successful due to the help of more than 100 volunteers from on campus and the broader community. The event brought together representatives from areas all over campus including the Art Gallery, Sport and Recreation Services and science outreach programs.

A variety of activities in the 1st Choice Savings Centre and at the Max Bell Aquatic Centre were all designed to encourage free play and exploration. Photos are attached.

"It didn't matter if you attended as a guest or volunteered, you had a lot of fun," says Mahon of the circus-themed event. "We were very pleased with our first Play Day in 2012. Its overwhelming success led to the 2013 activity and the decision to make it an annual event. We look forward to having the community join us next year."

The next Play Day will take place on February 17, 2014.

Day-use change rooms to close in Wellness Centre

The 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness continues to be the site of a flurry of construction.

Renovations to the Wellness Centre and the core of the PE Building - that hasn't been touched in 40 years - aim to create a more cohesive environment between the two facilities.

Construction on the day-use change rooms on the aquatic centre side of the building begin Monday, July 30, meaning those change rooms will be closed until renovations are complete at the end of September.

The public will be able to access the Max Bell Aquatic Centre through the main members' change room and the family change room. There are plenty of day-use lockers available in the family change room.

In addition to the mechanical, electrical and infrastructure upgrades inside the walls, the change rooms will receive a complete overhaul with new wall and floor tiles and new bathroom fixtures including mirrors and vanities. The showers will also be reconfigured and updated to match the look of the Wellness Centre shower areas.

U of L truly a sporting hub

As the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge began to remake its recreational identity in recent years, the promise of attracting high calibre athletic events to southern Alberta was touted as a key benefit to adding new facilities.

That promise is beginning to be realized, and the recent announcement that the city of Lethbridge will serve as host to the 2012 Alberta Summer Games is testament to the fact that Lethbridge can now tout the U of L as a hub of sporting activity.

"The Lethbridge Sports Bid Committee actively goes out and seeks these types of events and with our facilities, we're a natural host for these kinds of things," says Deb Marek, manager, facilities for Sport and Recreation Services.

Lethbridge would likely have been overlooked for an event the magnitude of the Summer Games had the Community Sports Stadium not been constructed. It will host all the track and field competitions as well as football for the 2012 event. Meanwhile, the 1st Choice Savings Centre will host basketball and the Max Bell Aquatic Centre will welcome both swimming and water polo, giving the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ five high profile events with thousands of athletes, parents and spectators getting a look at the facilities.

"It's always great to bring kids from all over Alberta to our campus and this will bring a lot of people here. It's an opportunity to show them our facilities, and show them our ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as a whole," says Marek.

While the 1st Choice Savings Centre has already established its reputation as an elite facility, having hosted numerous large-scale events, the Community Sports Stadium is in its first full season of activity. Community groups are quickly coming on board as the stadium will host a total of eight track meets in April and May alone, as well as high school rugby, soccer, and summer football and rugby camps.

"When you look at our recreational facilities as a whole, we operate the entire 12 months," says Marek. "We have our own summer camps that utilize the facilities, and we also have an abundance of community rentals as well. We are truly a community access facility group."

Weekend Pronghorn action on campus

Pronghorns men's hockey, as well as the men's and women's basketball teams, all have home dates this weekend as Canada West action comes to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus.

Men's Hockey

The Horns (3-6-1 CW, 7-11-1 overall) host the defending Canada West champion and CIS second ranked Alberta Golden Bears (8-1-1CW, 11-2-1 overall) Friday and Saturday nights at Nicholas Sheran Arena (7 p.m. puck drop).

The Horns look to put an end to a four-game losing streak, while the Bears have won three straight after sweeping UBC in Vancouver last weekend.

After only dressing 14 players in Saskatoon over the Halloween weekend, the Horns are slowly getting healthy and should have all but two players back from injury. All three of the Horns wins this season have come at home, while the Bears have yet to lose in regulation time on the road. Their only road blemish is a 3-2 shootout loss in Calgary.

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team (0-4 CW, 6-6 overall) hopes to end some early woes and pick up its first victory of the regular season after being swept last weekend by the Regina Cougars. The Horns held leads both nights last weekend in the fourth quarter but were unable hold on versus the fourth ranked Regina Cougars.

This weekend's opponents, Fraser Valley Cascades (0-2 CW) and Thompson Rivers WolfPack (2-0 CW) are coming off bye weeks, with the WolfPack sweeping the Cascades during the conference-opening weekend.

Friday night the Horns face the WolfPack, followed by the Cascades Saturday. Tip-off for both Friday and Saturday nights is 6 p.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

Men's Basketball

The men's basketball team (1-3 CW, 3-6 overall) looks to gain some momentum after a convincing 16-point victory over the Regina Cougars in their series finale last Saturday. Despite struggling offensively, hitting on less than 30 per cent of their shots, the Horns played tough defence, only surrendering 54 points and found a way to win.

Thompson Rivers (0-2 CW) and Fraser Valley (2-0 CW) are coming off their bye weeks. During the opening weekend of conference action, the Cascades swept Thompson Rivers in Kamloops.

Former Pronghorns' guard Barnaby Craddock coaches the Horns' Saturday night opponent, Fraser Valley.

Tip-off is scheduled to follow the women's game both nights at approximately 8 p.m.

Horns Swimming

The swim team hosts Memorial ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ from St John's, Newfoundland for a dual meet Saturday afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Max Bell Aquatic Centre.

Women's Hockey

The women's hockey team (3-3 CW, 6-6 overall) will finally return to the ice after being off for the past two weeks.

The Horns face a tough task as they travel to Edmonton to face the perennial women's hockey power Alberta Pandas (10-0 CW).

The Pandas have only surrendered 9 goals in 10 conference games and are coming off a home sweep of the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend.

Puck drops both nights at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton at 7 p.m.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Sport and Recreation Services make it difficult to come up with excuses for not staying in shape.

Not only does the U of L have first-rate facilities to satisfy every recreational need, Sport and Recreation Services offers staff membership rates to all ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge employees.

Membership includes access to the Fitness Centre, Max Bell Aquatic Centre, triple gymnasium, Ascent Climbing Centre, indoor running track, as well as admission to selected drop-in fitness classes, and a 10 per cent discount on select group programs and services.

Passes can be purchased either monthly ($28), quarterly ($100) or annually ($265.50) and there is also the option of monthly payroll deduction ($22.10 per month). Memberships provide access to the locker rooms. Both male and female locker rooms have steam rooms and lockers for rent that come with towel service. Locker rates are approximately $5 per month on payroll deduction. Lockers can be rented either quarterly or annually.

Additionally, Sport and Recreation Services offers programs such as personal consultations and personal training. This is a great way to not only get introduced to the facility but to receive specific training on living a healthy lifestyle.
