Morrison, Bowie to be honoured at Alumni Celebration

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Alumni Association and Senate will be holding a special Alumni Celebration Saturday, Oct. 19 at 12 p.m in the Markin Hall Atrium, at which they will be honouring
Drs. Robert Morrison (BASc '83) and Gary Bowie.

Morrison, the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, is known for a boundless energy and enthusiasm for English literature, and has established his position as an outstanding scholar and educator.

After completing a Bachelor of Arts & Science at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 1983, Morrison continued his education in the UK completing a Master of Philosophy at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Oxford in 1987 and a Doctor of Philosophy at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Edinburgh in 1991.

Currently a professor in the Department of English at Queen`s ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, Morrison is well-respected by both colleagues and students and has been recognized with numerous research and teaching awards. His clear and thought-provoking approach to literature has earned him international praise and he is often quoted as an expert in his field.

Bowie is a founding U of L faculty member, and enjoyed a 30-year career at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, spending time as athletic director, professor and coach. In addition to his professional accomplishments, he also made significant volunteer contributions at both the local and provincial level.

Dr. Gary Bowie has been involved with ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Athletics for more than 40 years. Having spent time as athletic director, professor and coach, Bowie is proud of the high calibre of student athletes representing the
U of L and appreciates the commitment our student athletes demonstrate to their respective sports. He also recognizes the financial obstacles faced by many student athletes.

Last year, 188 students represented the U of L by playing for the Pronghorns and the majority of them received no additional scholarship funding from Athletics. Finances remain a struggle for many students, but with the increased demands on their schedule because of practices and games, student athletes are particularly burdened.

The Pronghorn Annual Fund raises money for today's athletes, helping ensure a level of athletic and academic excellence that makes student athletes, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and fans proud. Your gift can be designated to the sport of your choice and will be used to help the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ meet the pressing needs of our student athletes.

"I'm proud of my continued and varied involvement with Pronghorn Athletics," says Bowie. "I give back to ensure that student athletes receive the funding they need to remain competitive."

Bowie to Chair homelessness secretariat

Dr. Gary Bowie, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Professor Emeritus and long-time advocate of ending homelessness, is the new Chair of the Alberta Secretariat for Action on Homelessness.

"I am honoured to be working with Dr. Bowie. His depth of experience and insight into ending homelessness makes him the ideal person to guide the goals and vision of the Secretariat," says Jonathan Denis, minister of Housing and Urban Affairs. "I also want to thank former Chair Wayne Stewart for his outstanding work with the Secretariat."

Bowie has been working on homelessness issues for over a decade. As the former Chair of Social Housing in Action, he led a multi-sector community-initiative that developed a plan to end homelessness in the city of Lethbridge.

"I embrace this new opportunity and I look forward to taking on the challenges of finding ways to address specific issues such as preventing homelessness," says Bowie. "By working together with our community partners, we will fulfill our vision to end homelessness by implementing meaningful measures that transform the lives of homeless Albertans."

Two new members were also named to the board of the Secretariat. Mike Ellis is a Calgary police officer who has worked closely with homeless people and Patricia Mackenzie is a former Edmonton city councillor. Board member Jane Manning has been appointed to the position of Vice-Chair of the Secretariat.

2011 Football Canada Cup coming to U of L

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Community Sports Stadium will play host to the biggest amateur football event in Canada next year when the 2011 Football Canada Cup comes to Lethbridge.

Lethbridge Sport Council made the announcement Friday afternoon.

"It will be a great opportunity for the community to showcase our new Community Sports Stadium plus our abundance of volunteers and community energy that will surround the event," says Kevin Kvame, Chair of the sports bid committee. "It is a national event that builds upon our desire to be a sports tourism destination of choice."

Football Canada Cup was created in 1992 as an under-19 national tackle football championship featuring the best high school and midget aged football players from across Canada who had not yet played at the university or junior level. The first competition was held in 1993, with the addition of the under-17 championship in 2004.

During its initial stage, the event involved a series of qualifying games across Canada to determine which four provincial teams would advance to the final four tournament. The championship now allows for every province that is a member of Football Canada to submit a provincial team at the national final.

In 2010, the event will include an under-18 championship and will be held in Wolfville, N.S. at Acadia ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. The 2010 event will see the greatest provincial representation in the history of the Football Canada Cup, including two Ontario teams and one team each from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Québec and Nova Scotia.

The July 2011 event at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge promises to showcase the area's strong football pedigree to the nation.

"Southern Alberta Zone 1 football is thriving. The teams that make up the Southern Alberta High School Football League are talented, ambitious, entertaining and have an enthusiastic and dedicated following," says Dr. Gary Bowie, Chair of Lethbridge Sport Council. "Team Alberta in 2009 had many players on their roster from Zone 1. By hosting the Canada Cup we hope to influence even more up and coming football stars."

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ values draw Hall back to his roots

Much has changed at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge since Ryan Hall (BA '00) ran the basketball court with the likes of Spencer Holt and Danny Balderson.

The concrete dungeon they called a home court is gone, replaced by the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness. The small, liberal arts school once known primarily for producing teachers has grown into a comprehensive university that initiates cutting-edge research from every corner of campus.

What has stayed the same is what drew Hall back to assume the position of Pronghorn athletics manager.

"You see the changes in the facilities and how the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has grown up in so many areas, but the values have stayed the same," says Hall, now a father of four. "It's amazing how many people I recognize from when I was an undergraduate here and who have stayed on as staff because it is such a great atmosphere."

A Claresholm, Alta., native, Hall spent the past four years in Greely, Colorado, earning a master's degree in sports management and working on his PhD. Fully expecting to remain in the United States, the U of L opportunity was too good to let pass.

"Lethbridge was really the only place in Canada where we'd come back to," he says.

Hall didn't initially pursue a career in sports management; rather he worked four years in Calgary as a rehabilitation therapist. His goal, however, was always to gravitate back to sport. It was a path he discovered through a course taught by then U of L professor Dr. Gary Bowie.

"It opened something up that I had never realized. I didn't know programs such as sport management existed," Hall says. "Health care was a good experience, I learned a lot and there were some good transferable skills, but it wasn't anything I was really passionate about and wanted to do for the rest of my life."

While completing his master's at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Northern Colorado (what he calls the other UNC), Hall cut his sport management teeth in a NCAA Division 1 environment. Despite the fact UNC is a new player at the Div. 1 level, it still presented Hall the opportunity to see big-time post-secondary athletics and the difference between the American and Canadian models is startling.

"It's big business down there, almost to an extreme. I think they somewhat lose sight of the student part of the student-athlete. I think they try but with the business approach they take, it's all about generating revenues," says Hall.
"We do a better job of prioritizing the fact our athletes are students, first and foremost."

Still, he recognizes that Canadian athletics can learn from its southern neighbours, especially when it comes to engaging supporters and creating passion for their teams, whether it is the student body, alumni or community as a whole.

"I hope at some point we can get a little more of that, and often times it comes from the people who live in the community. The community gets on board and supports the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as both fans and donors," he says.
"I also hope to create an atmosphere where we have our alumni excited about athletics and see them wearing it on their sleeves a little bit more."

He experienced that atmosphere, having played on the 2000 Pronghorns men's basketball team that hosted the Canada West final against ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta. They were the last really significant men's games played on campus and the series energized the entire area.

"In the end, you still have to be competitive and build momentum with winning teams, and I think that will come," says Hall.

• Prior to coming to the U of L to study kinesiology and play basketball, Hall spent two years playing baseball at Cochise College in Arizona.

• He met his wife Terra (Dudley) while at the U of L. She played basketball for Lethbridge College. They have four children, Tevin (11), Abbie (9), Emily (6) and Brynna (23 months), with a fifth on the way.

• Hall describes ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Northern Colorado and the town of Greely as a parallel to the
U of L and Lethbridge. "The school focused on business, nursing and education, with about 10,000 students in an agricultural community of 85,000."
