Newfound aquatic parasite named after longtime ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge professor

A significant find by a ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge graduate student has led to a key paper in the International Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, as well as a touching tribute to one of the most respected aquatic biologists in North America.

Graduate student Molly Tilley and her supervisor, Dr. Cam Goater, have characterized the life cycle of M. rasmusseni.

As an undergraduate student, Molly Tilley found large, white, disfiguring lesions surrounding the eyes of fathead minnows in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Pond. Her observation kicked off a long process of discovery that uncovered what she and supervisor Dr. Cam Goater refer to as an “emerging parasite” that has the ability to disrupt the aquatic food chain. Given its prominence as a new species and being identified in southern Alberta waters, the duo felt it was fitting for the parasite to be named after retired ULethbridge professor Dr. Joe Rasmussen — Myxobolus rasmusseni.

“Joe and I had been close friends and colleagues for many years,” says Goater. “His stature within Canadian science circles is legendary — I can’t think of an award in his field that he hasn’t won. Naming this parasite after him was another way to honour his range of contributions. To me, he is the top aquatic biologist in the country, maybe North America, and nobody is more deserving of a recognition of this type.”

The new parasite is known as a myxozoan. One member of this group of parasites has become infamous in recent years, especially in Alberta, for causing ‘whirling disease’ in trout. This disease is spreading rapidly in western North America, posing a major challenge for fisheries management and conservation. Myxobolus rasmusseni represents a novel form of this condition. The new parasite infects fathead minnows, a species that plays a significant role in the food webs of prairie ponds and lakes.

“The problem is that fatheads tend to occur in the middle of our aquatic food chains,” says Goater. “Pike eat them, trout eat them and all sorts of fish-eating birds like herons and pelicans eat them. Our worry is that infection rates are often so high in juvenile minnows that they are unlikely to survive through the winter to reproduce the following spring. You’re really upsetting the ecosystem by losing a key part of the food chain.”

Rasmussen, who spent 16 highly productive years at ULethbridge, says one of the most significant honours a biologist can experience is to have a new species named after them.

“The naming of species is an integral component of the communication of information about nature, and the stability of our system for describing and naming new organisms is a cherished aspect of our science,” he says. “To have your name attached to a new species is, therefore, one of the finest forms of immortality that can be conferred, and to be recognized in such a distinguished manner by my colleague Dr. Goater and his student, Molly Tilley, is gratifying beyond words.

“Indeed, my involvement with Dr. Goater as a friend and colleague has been a major highlight in my career at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.”

Tilley recently completed her master’s thesis on the discovery of M. rasmusseni. She says that she is now authoring another paper on its effect on individual minnow behaviour and survival.

“The results suggest that not only does infection with M. rasmusseni ultimately cause the death of the host, we found that infection reduces the physiological performance of individual fish which in turn impacts their functional role in the ecosystem,” she says. “This work will provide a solid foundation for future research which could ultimately inform management strategies.”

Rasmussen is impressed with the work of Tilley and Goater on the parasite that bears his name, and keen to follow its progression.

“Since Dr. Goater’s lab has characterized the complete life cycle of this new parasite, as well as its genetic profile, M. rasmusseni can be cultivated in the laboratory, and will likely contribute significantly to our understanding of these interesting organisms and the pathology and immunological challenge they represent,” says Rasmussen.

Water researchers to collaborate with Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair

Brooks will be giving his initial talk to the U of L audience on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 3 to 4 p.m. in WE1001, presenting Understanding Risks of Fish on Prozac, Bugs on Drugs and other Harbingers of an Urbanizing Water Cycle

Dr. Bryan Brooks, a professor of environmental science and biomedical studies at Baylor ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's College of Arts & Sciences (Waco, Texas) will be getting his feet wet in more ways than one as he begins a research term with colleagues at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building (AWESB).

As the recently-appointed Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair, Brooks will arrive at the U of L in January 2014 to work on projects of common importance to communities on both sides of the Canada-US border.

Dr. Bryan Brooks will arrive on campus in January 2014 but has already begun collaborative work with U of L researchers.

Though they are more than 3,000 km apart, there are many parallels between the semi-arid environment of southern Alberta and the areas of Texas that Brooks studies. Urban intrusion on watersheds, climate change and other environmental stressors affect both regions.

“My goal is to develop a more complete understanding of water quality in the watersheds of semi-arid regions in Alberta that are undergoing urbanization," says Brooks. "I am looking forward to working with, and learning from, the researchers at the AWESB to build on my team’s ongoing work in semi-arid regions of Texas and other parts of the U.S., so we can advance sustainable water resource management efforts together."

Brooks is recognized as an international expert on contaminants and water quality issues in urban regions. His research team focuses efforts on water quality and water reuse, comparative toxicology and pharmacology, sustainable molecular design/green chemistry, developing approaches to define contaminant risks and the ecology and toxicology of harmful algae blooms.

A transplanted Californian, Brooks has taught at Baylor since 2002 and has served as director of the university’s environmental health science program since 2008. He is the author of more than 100 book chapters and journal articles and has been recognized by Baylor’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, one of the nation’s leading collegiate honor societies, for his exceptional student mentoring.

“Having Bryan on campus will be a great benefit to a number of different research teams at the U of L,” says Dr. Joe Rasmussen, a Canada Research Chair in Aquatic Ecosystems and the Director of WISE. “I know Bryan both personally and as a researcher, and we are extremely lucky to have him working with us. He’s got a great ability to connect with students, members of the community and colleagues from different disciplines. His enthusiasm for teaching and learning is contagious, and I am really looking forward to hearing his perspective on our common areas of research.”

Rasmussen and other WISE researchers, including geographers, biological scientists, physicists, water-quality and toxicology specialists, GIS imaging experts and glacier researchers among others, are analyzing water resources, water quantity and quality. They then overlap related social science investigations, such as water policy and economics.

Their studies often investigate water resources and river systems of western North America, including the Saskatchewan River Basin and adjacent watersheds. The investigations consider fundamental aspects of water science, as well as applied science and management directed towards the simultaneous goals of environmental health and socioeconomic prosperity.

WISE is one of 12 Centres and Institutes at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Growth of research centres and institutes in strategic areas, and the continued development of existing centres and institutes, is a key feature of the Strategic Research Plan of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Centres and Institutes Director, David Hill, says Brooks’s appointment to the WISE group will further expand its reach in each of the research and broader external communities.

“Bryan has a number of innovative research efforts to his credit, and we are very pleased he will be on campus for a sustained period of time to work with our researchers in the WISE Centre," says Hill. "Adding Bryan to the WISE group underscores the value of the Centre and Institute concept, which is to bring different people and levels of expertise together to work on a common theme, in this case, water. They are already working on projects that have a bigger impact because they are working together. Bryan’s research and his networks will be a valuable addition to that process.”

Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. A really big fish story

Some people go for leisurely fishing or boating excursions on the South Saskatchewan river, but ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Master of Science candidate Christine Lacho recently spent a week on the water angling, tagging, and collecting data on Canada's largest freshwater fish, the Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens).

Her work with the massive fish species will ultimately help inform the population's recovery strategy and listing decision under the Species at Risk Act.

Have you ever had one of those weeks at work you hoped would never end? I recently did. But of course it's not every week I get to join researchers on a week-long expedition angling, tagging, and collecting data on Canada's largest freshwater fish, the Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens).

In a recent blog post, (http://www.wwf.ca) Emily Giles and I briefly described why Lake Sturgeon fascinate us. So you can imagine my excitement to have the opportunity to assist a collaborative research effort lead by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development and Fisheries and Oceans Canada and in collaboration with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge on Lake Sturgeon in the Alberta portion of the South Saskatchewan River system, that will ultimately help inform the population's recovery strategy and listing decision under the Species at Risk Act.

The research project is intensive and involves deploying and retrieving multiple (~40) data receivers throughout the river system, angling and tagging Lake Sturgeon at a number of locations, and tracking the movement of the fish with the receivers as well as by boat.

I was fortunate to get to do a little bit of almost everything during the week I spent in the field with lead researcher Christine Lacho (��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge) and Eztiaan Groenewald (Alberta Sustainable Resource Development).

Not surprisingly, a very enjoyable part of the field work was the time I spent angling for Lake Sturgeon, which often make spectacular jumps out of the water and long runs. We caught several adults and juveniles, and I must admit the thrill of catching a Lake Sturgeon only grew as the week went by and unfortunately, had to end.

To better understand population dynamics and growth, all Lake Sturgeon that were caught were quickly measured, weighed, marked with floy and PIT (passive integrated transponder) tags, and clipped in a small area of a pectoral fin for ageing, before being released back into the river.

The main focus of this research though is to learn more about the fish's distribution, movement, seasonal habitat use, and potential critical habitat locations. To accomplish this, acoustic tags were surgically inserted into adults and a small number of juveniles.

The acoustic tags transmit a signal to data receivers, which allows researchers and government agencies to identify the locations of key Lake Sturgeon habitat, when and for how long it is being used, and the extent and timing of movement between habitats.

Another key component of the field work was to retrieve data receivers from the river bottom by locating them using a GPS (Global Positioning System) unit and 'fishing' them out using grappling hooks.

Although this may sound fairly straightforward, negotiating fast-moving and sediment-laden water can be challenging and it is also possible that river processes may have shifted a receiver's location from where it was deployed.

Once we were able to hook onto a receiver, the next part involves hauling it, and the 80-pound concrete block it is fastened to, into the boat which is, as you can guess, a great workout.

This process makes the retrieval very rewarding, most importantly because critical research data can be downloaded from the receiver and used to better understand and ultimately protect Lake Sturgeon.

Now, back at my desk, I am left with great admiration for the dedication of the researchers involved in and resources being put towards this project, and of course a much deeper appreciation for the fascinating Lake Sturgeon.

It was an incredible experience to work with these ancient fish and researchers and something I will always remember. Field work is still underway so it will be some time before results are available.

In the meantime, stay tuned on further efforts to recover and conserve Lake Sturgeon and the river habitats that are vital to their survival.

Byrne film an environmental landmark

An educational film with algae-filled Lake Winnipeg as its focal point appeals to farmers and city dwellers to change their ways and help the country's watersheds to heal.

Choking Lake Winnipeg, a 25-minute documentary available free online, was screened Thursday at Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs. Produced by Jim Byrne, U of L prof and Chair of Geography, and his wife, Leanne Little, it includes interviews with many of the nation's top environmental scientists, including David Schindler, Killam Memorial Professor of Ecology at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta, and Joe Rasmussen, Canada Research Council Chair in Aquatic Ecosystems at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

An original soundtrack for the film was created by Stephen McGlenn, a U of L grad who attended COP 16 in Cancun — the United Nations Conference on Climate Change — as a Canadian Youth Delegate.

"We're looking to change a political/social approach to the way we deal with environment," said Byrne. "I went to some of my very favorite colleagues, Canada Research Chairs in many locations, outstanding and brilliant colleagues."

Byrne's expertise is in global environmental change. He was the lead scientist, originator and co-producer of the 2002 award-winning television series Global Change and the 2004 TV series Water Under Fire.

"Our goal was to inform people in a qualitative way and let them know that not only do we have this very challenging environmental problem, but we have some suitable solutions if we just have the political will."

Comparisons can be made with conditions in southern Alberta, where chemical runoff from farming and manure from beef, chicken and hog operations makes its way into the Oldman River watershed. Farmers, said Byrne, can go to zero-tillage practices which holds moisture in the soil and doesn't allow erosion and runoff; while city dwellers can take steps that include conserving water, being aware of what they shouldn't flush down their toilets, and using less — or zero — herbicides and pesticides on their lawns.

The film shows how massive blue-green algae blooms have appeared in Lake Winnipeg and other water bodies across the Canadian prairies. Eutrophication (when water is depleted of oxygen by algae, killing the body of water) is fast becoming a problem; not just in Canada but in the most heavily-populated parts of the industrialized and developing world.

Rasmussen a leader in aquatic research

Whether we like it or not, Canada's waters are under increasing pressure to support greater economic activity. Be it the energy sector, agriculture, mining or urbanization, our aquatic ecosystems face an uncertain future.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge biological sciences professor Dr. Joe Rasmussen is a key component in helping people understand the adverse effects that economic activity can have on our waters. One of the country's most recognized water researchers, his peers recognized him when a Canadian professional organization of limnologists (aquatic ecosystem researchers who study lakes and rivers) awarded Rasmussen its highest honour.

Rasmussen, a Canada Research Chair in Aquatic Ecosystems, received the Frank H. Rigler Memorial Award at the joint annual meetings of the Society of Canadian Limnologists and the Canadian Conference for Fisheries Research.

The award recognizes and honours major achievements in the field of limnology by Canadians or those working in Canada. Emphasis in selection is given to established aquatic scientists whose work is recognized for its influence and importance.

Rasmussen teaches ecology, aquatic ecosystems and aquatic biology. He has served on a wide range of advisory panels across Canada dealing with water management issues ranging from in-stream flow to water quality criteria, and has done groundbreaking research in a number of key areas relating to the management of water and aquatic resources.

Canada's waters are a valuable resource and as pressure is exerted upon them economically, the role of the aquatic researcher becomes more essential.

"There is also the issue of 'regulated rivers,' which include both reservoirs and their downstream tailwaters. They are and will be an increasing part of the limnological landscape," says Rasmussen.

"Most recently, the research that my laboratory has been in engaged in crosses over from limnology to fisheries research, a process I am encouraging more researchers in both of these disciplines to do. For example, we are examining the scientific criteria used to assess fish habitats under the Fisheries Act, which has become a prominent component of environmental regulation in Canada following the Supreme Court decision on the Oldman River dam during the 1990s."

He says being recognized by his peers is humbling.

"The Rigler award means a great deal to me both personally and professionally. Personally, it is gratifying because so many colleagues and former students from all over Canada belong to the society, and to be honoured by friends with whom I have worked with throughout my career brings back many wonderful memories," says Rasmussen. "It is also very gratifying to receive an award that has been given to many excellent scientists over the years, and to have my name associated with that of professor Rigler, who had such a profound impact on limnology and aquatic science in general."

The award also reaps benefits for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and could result in an influx of funding and research opportunities.

"I have already been contacted by a number of people who would like to come to Lethbridge and work in my laboratory," Rasmussen says. "The prestige associated with this award, and others like it, can also make it somewhat easier to obtain grants and other types of funding for research, and this helps keep the wheels turning."

Rasmussen will receive $1.4 million over the next seven years – funds that will allow him to focus on several diverse research projects and add doctoral and master's level researchers to his already-busy lab group.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's Dr. Joe Rasmussen, a professor of biological sciences and a national leader in aquatic ecosystem research, has had his Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) funding as a Tier I Canada Research Chair renewed.

The need to provide dependable water supplies for agricultural, industrial and domestic uses without degrading natural processes is a major sustainability challenge. Rasmussen's research projects address this problem and many more.

"Joe and his team have made a vital contribution towards furthering the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's commitment in the area of water research, which is not only a key part of our strategic plan but is furthering our progress as we become a comprehensive research university," says Dr. Dan Weeks, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's vice-president research.

He adds that Rasmussen's award affirms the
U of L's place as a leader in water and aquatic ecosystems research.

"He has built up the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's presence in the aquatic research community to an unprecedented extent, and was recently the only Albertan appointed to a major review panel on the environmental state of the Athabasca River Basin surrounding the oil sands," says Weeks. "The U of L has become recognized as an important centre for research in fisheries and aquatic ecosystems, which would have been inconceivable a decade ago."

Rasmussen's research has made a significant contribution to the development of tracer approaches that are used to model energy flow in aquatic food webs. His research has provided fresh insights and technical inroads into important ecological problems such as the biomagnification of persistent contaminants and the impacts of heavy metals on environmental quality.

The good news came as part of a national announcement by Tony Clement, Federal Industry Minister, who confirmed $275.6 million to fund 310 new or renewed Canada Research Chairs at 53 Canadian universities.

Rasmussen will receive $1.4 million over the next seven years – funds that will allow him to focus on several diverse research projects and add doctoral and master's level researchers to his already-busy lab group.

He says his original and renewed funding, when combined with other aquatic researchers, played an important role in leveraging funds to build the Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building, which stands as a symbol of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's strategic commitment to water research.

"In addition, the funds have helped leverage more than $3 million from Western Economic Diversification to equip the building and to build a state-of-the-art Aquatic Research Facility within this building," says Rasmussen. "I am really pleased to have the funding continue for another term, and am looking forward to a significant expansion of my research programming."

One of the new projects Rasmussen is working on involves an NSERC-supported strategic network called HydroNet, which partners with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the hydroelectric industry.

The aim of the project is to develop science-based criteria for assessing productive capacity of aquatic ecosystems where water flow and water levels are affected by hydroelectric dams.

"Our work on the effects of flow regulation is helping to inform policy regarding instream flow requirements for aquatic ecosystem health, which is part of the core mandate of the Alberta Water Research Institute," says Rasmussen.

As the energy sector, agriculture, mining or urbanization of our landscape increases; aquatic researchers and their findings will be at a premium as we try to balance the want for economic growth against the health of our delicate aquatic ecosystem.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge professor and researcher, Dr. Joe Rasmussen, is an expert in this field and his peers have recognized him for his valuable contributions to the study of aquatic ecosystems.

A Canadian professional organization of limnologists (aquatic ecosystem researchers who study lakes and rivers) has awarded Rasmussen (biological sciences) its highest honour.
