Now in his second year at the venerable institution, SpearChief-Morris has made history as the first Indigenous student president of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau. The organization has been in existence for 104 years.</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s an incredible honour. I think it&rsquo;s great whenever you see First Nations and other Indigenous people in higher education and in positions like this,&rdquo; says SpearChief-Morris. &ldquo;Being at Harvard is an incredible experience. It&rsquo;s a big school and the campus is very impressive but overwhelmingly it&rsquo;s a humbling experience. I think that&rsquo;s what I&rsquo;ll take away most from this, being surrounded by the most brilliant people in the world and constantly having to hold yourself up next to those people gives you some great perspective.&rdquo;</p><p>The son of an African-American father from Los Angeles and Aboriginal mother (Wilma Spear Chief (BASc &rsquo;77)) from the southern Alberta Blood Tribe, SpearChief-Morris grew up in a unique household that groomed unique talents. A gifted athlete, he was a star in the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League and, after graduating from Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, was recruited by national powerhouse 免费福利资源在线看片 of Victoria.</p><p>While he was universally respected for his ability to run a fast break and hit a three-point shot, there was a depth to SpearChief-Morris that went far beyond the hardcourt. It was apparent early on that the student aspect of student-athlete would always remain first and the sport would help facilitate much larger goals.</p><p>&ldquo;That was a vision that Jules always had in his life. Basketball was great and basketball was another place for Julian to excel but he was never a hoop dreamer, he was a person who had a very clear vision and focus about what he wanted to do with his life,&rdquo; says Dave Adams, current coach of the Pronghorns women&rsquo;s basketball team and former coach of the men&rsquo;s program that lured SpearChief-Morris back to Lethbridge in 2009.</p><p>Adams knew him well, having watched him grow up alongside his own daughter when both were enrolled at Montessori School as toddlers. The U of L lost SpearChief-Morris to Victoria out of high school but he says he was an awkward fit there, and after two years, with Adams now at the helm of the Horns, he returned.</p><p>&ldquo;Think about the fortitude and the vision he had to leave a very successful program in Victoria and come to the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge, which hadn&rsquo;t made the playoffs in seven or eight years,&rdquo; says Adams, who notes SpearChief-Morris then had to sit out the 2009-2010 season because of transfer regulations. &ldquo; For him to do that speaks a lot to the character of the person and to who Julian is.&rdquo;</p><p>Back on the floor for the 2010-11 season, SpearChief-Morris played just eight games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He endured a full 10 months of rehabilitation before he finally returned to the starting lineup the next fall. His first year back, he managed to play only 15 minutes per game as he regained strength and confidence in his surgically-repaired knee. It wasn&rsquo;t until 2012-13, his final year of eligibility, that the Pronghorns saw a completely healthy SpearChief-Morris and he responded averaging 15.1 points per game, second in both team scoring and rebounds.</p><p>&ldquo;I believe that all the adversity that was put in front of Julian to play and to be the successful player that he was, he channeled into other aspects of his life,&rdquo; says Adams. &ldquo; He always surrounded himself with excellence and it gave him tools to put in his toolbox for success in life.&rdquo;</p><p>All the while, SpearChief-Morris threw himself into his studies and he prospered in a new environment.</p><p>&ldquo;I had such a good experience at the U of L, the small class sizes were something I really appreciated,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;I had the opportunity to meet and get to know so many of my professors, many I still keep in contact with today.&rdquo;<a href="#_msocom_2" rel="nofollow"></a></p><p>One of those professors was Dr. Ivan Townshend, coordinator of the Urban and Regional Studies program in the Department of Geography. He paints a picture of a student who saw his studies as a way to facilitate a meaningful impact on society.</p><p>&ldquo;One of the reasons he stood out was you could tell he had a real social conscience and a sincere willingness to help the disadvantaged,&rdquo; says Townshend. &ldquo; And it wasn&rsquo;t so it would just look good on his resum茅, he was intent on making a real difference.&rdquo;</p><p>SpearChief-Morris worked for Townshend as a research assistant for a year and clearly was at the top of his class.</p><p>&ldquo;From the point of view of the urban and regional studies students I&rsquo;ve seen over the last 25 years, he&rsquo;s certainly one of the top 1 to 2 per cent,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo; He was an exceptional student, mature beyond his years. He was very unique in that he was intellectually inquisitive and an exceptionally good researcher who really grasped the material on a deep level.&rdquo;</p><p>SpearChief-Morris feels strongly connected to his family and his roots. He has never wavered in his desire to better the outlook for the Aboriginal community in southern Alberta.<div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/JSC-Morris2.jpg" title="SpearChief-Morris is keen on bringing his knowledge and experience back to southern Alberta and doing what he can to better the fortunes of the disadvantaged." alt=""><div class="image-caption">SpearChief-Morris is keen on bringing his knowledge and experience back to southern Alberta and doing what he can to better the fortunes of the disadvantaged.</div></div><a href="#_msocom_3" rel="nofollow"></a></p><p>&ldquo;I grew up in a household where it was an expectation that we&rsquo;d attend some form of higher education and I was lucky to have had two parents who were there, who cared, who supported me, and who believed in me. That&rsquo;s not something that a lot of Aboriginal kids have the privilege of and that privilege is not lost on me. I feel very fortunate to have had that upbringing and that&rsquo;s part of the reason why I do what I do &ndash; to give back,&rdquo; says SpearChief-Morris.</p><p>Upon graduating from the U of L, SpearChief-Morris spent a year as an educational assistant and guidance counsellor who specifically worked with Aboriginal children.</p><p>&ldquo;That was a great experience. I saw a lot of success stories but I also felt frustrated a lot of the time because I always felt I was dealing with symptoms of a greater issue that I really didn&rsquo;t have the power to address in that role,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo; That&rsquo;s when I cemented my decision to go to law school.&rdquo;</p><p>He admits he never expected to end up at Harvard but after excelling on his LSAT exam, it opened the door for him to apply. At the tail end of his first year in Boston, he was eligible to apply to one of the three historic honour societies at Harvard Law School and earned acceptance into the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, the oldest student-run law firm in the United States.</p><p>Thanks to a specific statute in the State of Massachusetts, the bureau is allowed to practice as students in court under the supervision of instructors but as lead attorneys and attorneys of record.</p><p>&ldquo;We provide pro bono legal aid to folks in the greater Boston area who couldn&rsquo;t otherwise afford those services,&rdquo; says SpearChief-Morris. &ldquo; The Bureau is a remarkable organization. When we take on a client, we take on responsibility for the most important thing in that client&rsquo;s life, and I think that forces our students to grow up a lot. You have to answer that phone call and that email, even if it&rsquo;s on Christmas morning, you have to be on time, you have to be present and you have to take it seriously because it&rsquo;s real.&rdquo;</p><p>He will graduate in May 2018 and in the meantime, he&rsquo;ll spend his second consecutive summer working for a law firm in Washington, D.C. as part of the Native American Practice Group. They represent Native American tribes in complex litigation matters, and act as government relations and economic development consultants.</p><p>And while the big cities are honing his legal skills today, a return to his hometown is the ultimate goal &ndash; continuing the work and fulfilling the promise he began years ago.</p><p>&ldquo;As a second-year student I don&rsquo;t have it all figured out yet but I&rsquo;ve really enjoyed the work I&rsquo;ve been doing in the summer and I&rsquo;d like to do that moving forward, at least in the short term,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;Long term, my goal has always been to go back to southern Alberta and put the experience I hope to have gained along the way to use back home.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-industryterm-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">IndustryTerm:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/industry-term/urban-and-regional-studies" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">urban and regional studies</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/harvard-legal-aid-bureau" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Harvard Legal Aid Bureau</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/harvard-university" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Harvard 免费福利资源在线看片</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/pronghorn-athletics" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Pronghorn Athletics</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/department-urban-regional-studies" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Department of Urban &amp; Regional Studies</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/department-geography" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Department of Geography</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/faculty-arts-science" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Faculty of Arts &amp; Science</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/faculty-arts-and-science" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Faculty of Arts and Science</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/julian-spearchief-morris" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Julian Spearchief-Morris</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/person/ivan-townshend" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ivan Townshend</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/dave-adams" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Dave Adams</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="SpearChief-Morris embracing opportunity to affect change" class="rdf-meta"></span> Mon, 06 Mar 2017 18:59:46 +0000 trevor.kenney 8698 at /unews A sense of place /unews/article/sense-place-0 <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p><em><strong>Born and raised in southern Alberta, Jim Coutts has been collecting art since he was 17. Some people think it&#39;s boring because you drive and drive for hours and they feel there&#39;s nothing there, but there&#39;s a great deal there and it&#39;s the vastness and simplicity that makes it so hauntingly beautiful.&quot;<br /><br /> Born in High River and raised in Nanton, 80 kilometres south of Calgary, Coutts is as much a product of southern Alberta as the grasses that blanket the Porcupine Hills. Growing up in a rural community, Coutts remembers endlessly long summer days spent racing bicycles down the streets of his hometown.<br /><br /> &quot;During the summer, I always had stuff to do. I was very busy &ndash; in my own mind at least,&quot; says Coutts, allowing nostalgia to creep in. &quot; The thing about memory is that it improves over time, and events get better and better the more you remember them.&quot;<br /><br /> But the memory of his grandfather, W.H. (Bill) Allan, looking longingly at a homestead he&#39;d given up, remained unchanged.<br /><br /> &quot; As a young boy, I would go into his field with him in the summers,&quot; says Coutts. &quot; We would walk over to the old homestead from that field, which was just across the road. He always told me he never should have given up that property and, although I didn&#39;t understand it, I could tell that it was a painful memory for him.&quot;<br /><br /> Allan was one of many settlers who, searching for a better life, travelled thousands of miles across Canada in the early years of the last century. He farmed a quarter section of land near Nanton before losing the property during the 1920s and moving his family into town. Visiting the property as a child resonated with Coutts, who felt an attachment to the land he couldn&#39;t explain at the time. He now believes the homestead provides him with a sense of place but is also symbolic of the difficulties of prairie life.<br /><br /> &quot; We look at beautiful things and we see only the good,&quot; says Coutts. &quot; We forget that our ancestors and our forebears stumbled and fell and picked themselves up and kept going. Part of our history is the history of struggle.&quot;<br /><br /> While crops sometimes failed, the prairie soil proved fertile ground for art and culture. At the age of 12, Coutts caught the attention of Dorothy Dowhan, a local newspaper editor with friends in the artistic community, and started visiting art galleries, theatres and even gardens as her guest.<br /><br /> &quot;Dorothy took a great interest in young people and would spot individuals who were showing interest in wider subjects,&quot; says Coutts of the woman he describes as a mentor. &quot; She had a lot of friends, and I met some very interesting people through her.&quot;<br /> <div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:335px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/coutts-home_3.jpg" title="Respectful of its history, the new Coutts homestead faces west to the Porcupine Hills, foothills of the Canadian Rockies, which are often topped in snow even as the gardens bloom. The original buildings scattered across this sweep of prairie represent a coming home for this southern Alberta boy.</div></div><br /> It was Dorothy who gave a then 17-year-old Coutts his first piece of art.<br /><br /> &quot;Dorothy gave me a little oil by John Cook &ndash; who&#39;s still around and still painting &ndash; when I went to university,&quot; says Coutts, who hung the picture in his dorm room while completing a law degree at the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Alberta.<br /><br /> Armed with a single painting and an appreciation developed over years and years of looking, Coutts began buying art on his own.<br /><br /> &quot;I&#39;d been going to galleries for 10 years and I just kept looking,&quot; explains Coutts. &quot;Toward the end of my university days I would splurge and buy a print for $50. Gradually I became a bit of a pack rat.&quot;<br /><br /> Collector is more accurate. Hesitant at first, Coutts soon began collecting with determination and ferocity, qualities he would demonstrate in his professional life as well.<br /><br /> &quot;I studied law because I thought I could get a job when I finished,&quot; admits Coutts. &quot;I didn&#39;t know what I wanted to do, but I was very interested in public life.&quot;<br /><br /> Admiring the progressive politics of provincial Liberal leader, Harper Prowse, Coutts entered the political scene in 1953 with a desire to affect change. Ten years later, Coutts was made secretary to Liberal Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and was on the front lines of Canadian politics.<br /><br /> &quot;I enjoyed being in the fray,&quot; says Coutts, who worked with Pearson for three years before going to Harvard 免费福利资源在线看片 to complete his MBA. &quot;Politics is always drama. There&#39;s always something happening and it seemed important but it was also a kind of entertainment.&quot;<br /><br /> Canadians saw profound change in those three short years: medicare, the pension plan, old-age security, the National Economic Council and the new Canadian flag were all introduced.<br /><br /> &quot; It was a very short period when a great deal of good was done for this country,&quot; says Coutts proudly.<br /><br /> After completing his MBA, Coutts started a consulting firm where he was working when Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau appointed him principal secretary in 1975. He worked with Trudeau for six years before leaving to run in a byelection, which he lost by 200 votes.<br /> <div class="image-caption-container right" style="width:400px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/coutts-home_4.jpg" title="Homestead photos by Andy Hakin." alt=""><div class="image-caption">Homestead photos by Andy Hakin.</div></div><br /> Through it all, Coutts diligently continued collecting art.<br /><br /> &quot; You get to like things and think you need things,&quot; says Coutts. &quot; You also train your eye so that while once in a while you buy a bad picture, generally, you buy things that you like and most are really good. In the beginning I didn&#39;t believe there was any theme to it, but over the years I acquired a good deal of western Canadian art.&quot;<br /><br /> The art in the Coutts collection is united by its subject matter: endless skies over empty fields, faded grain elevators contrasted against brilliant sunsets, soaring birds floating in wild winds, all depicting the variety of the southern Alberta landscape.<br /><br /> Understanding that the images in his collection represented more than an affinity for prairie scenery, Coutts returned to southern Alberta in 1988 and reclaimed his grandfather&#39;s homestead. With a keen eye for detail, Coutts set to work, turning the soil once broken by his grandfather into a prairie garden and bringing his own vision for the property to life.<br /><br /> &quot; It seems to me the more attractive and exciting and imaginative and creative a place is in your mind, the more painful it is to be away from it,&quot; says Coutts, who is grateful for the opportunity to return each summer to the community he knew as a child.<br /><br /> The new homestead is very much an expression of Coutts himself. Set on the vast, flat canvas of the Prairies, buildings are scattered across the land &ndash; the original homestead; a chicken house, now a guest suite; a barn; and an old ice house and granary, moved from Coutts&#39;s mother&#39;s neighbouring property. Each structure provides a seemingly effortless organization to the landscape where gardens flourish, and the plots and paths are carefully carved in such a way to welcome visitors and encourage exploration.<br /><br /> His approach has been bold and the transformation remarkable, but Coutts has not forgotten the struggles of life on the Prairies.<br /><br /> &quot; When you look at the place now with the gardens, grasses and trees and the beauty depicted in the photographs and paintings, that&#39;s one thing,&quot; says Coutts. &quot; But for many years, for those who came first, it was a very difficult and painful place to live.&quot;<br /><br /> Respectful of its history, the new Coutts homestead faces west to the Porcupine Hills, foothills of the Canadian Rockies, which are often topped in snow even as the gardens bloom. The original buildings scattered across this sweep of prairie represent a coming home for this southern Alberta boy.<br /><br /> &quot;A piece of you will always stay wherever it is that you came from, and you also carry a piece of that landscape with you,&quot; explains Coutts. &quot;Fortunately, I&#39;ve been able to return to the place that means so much to me.&quot;<br /><br /> <strong><em>This story first appeared in SAM Magazine. "This is an exciting possibility that could reveal pathways that prepare offspring for the environment into which they will be born."<br> <br> As the grand prize winner, Gregg receives $25,000 from Eppendorf, and his essay, <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/short/330/6005/770" rel="nofollow">Parental Control over the Brain</a>, will be published in the November issue of the journal Science. Gregg will join the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Utah as an assistant professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy next year.<br> <br> In his award-winning essay, Gregg explains how he and his team at Harvard sort out how mother- and father-specific genetic cues influence their offspring's brains. Gregg describes how the team developed a genome-wide approach to study these parental effects on different regions of the brain during various developmental stages.<br> <br> Through experiments with mice, they document how rare, epigenetic marks on certain maternal and paternal genes&mdash;known as genome imprints&mdash;affect the timing of gene expression in the next generation. For example, these researchers have identified approximately 553 genes that are subject to these parental genome imprints at day 15 of embryonic development and just 372 genes under the influence of such parental effects in the adult brain.<br> <br> "Genes that preferentially express one parent's copy can be especially vulnerable to the presence of a mutation, because the other copy that doesn't have the mutation isn't being expressed, so there is no backup," says Gregg. "This phenomenon is especially obvious in males with diseases involving mutations on the X chromosome. In females, these diseases tend to be less severe, because females have two X chromosomes, but males have only one."<br> <br> His findings reveal some of the specific parental effects associated with brain development and diseases, such as multiple sclerosis&mdash;and they provide a roadmap for future research in this field.<br> <br> "I believe these effects have major relevance for our understanding of brain evolution, function, and disease," says Gregg.<br> <br> The Eppendorf and Science Prize in Neurobiology recognizes outstanding international neurobiological research based on In an age when tension between religions has reached a critical point, the need for dialogue, understanding and tolerance has never been more important.</p> <p>This fall, recent U of L graduate and religious studies major Erika Jahn (BA '08) confidently headed out into the world, ready to begin her life's work in the scholarly pursuit of a more peaceful tomorrow. Her first stop &ndash; Harvard 免费福利资源在线看片, where she is pursuing a master's degree in theological studies. It's a renowned academic program that accepts only a select group of the world's most stellar students.</p> <p>"I cried with excitement when I received my acceptance letter from Harvard," Jahn recalls. "I hadn't told very many people I applied there, including my parents, so when I was accepted, it was a really big deal."</p> <p>Jahn says her U of L professors and real-world experience played important roles in her acceptance to the Harvard Divinity School.</p> <p>"I had the most astounding professors at the U of L who have been personal mentors to me," she says. "My professors instilled in me an appreciation for academic rigour and the desire to engage with my community and the world around me."</p> <p>During her second year at the U of L, Jahn went to Thailand to study Buddhism as part of an independent study &ndash; an experience she says not only deepened her understanding of the field, but also strengthened her appreciation for cultural diversity.</p> <p>Now as a graduate student, Jahn is continuing her research of religious conflict, peace studies and ethnic violence, and is focusing on religion and politics. And as she takes in all that Harvard has to offer, she has her eyes set on the road ahead.</p> <p>"I hope to complete my PhD after this and find a great university to work at," she says. "I'm also interested in working abroad with a non-governmental organization to establish better systems of conflict resolution between different religious and ethnic communities."</p> <p>It's a promising future &ndash; one that will hopefully bring peace thanks to the efforts of Jahn and individuals like her.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/harvard-university" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Harvard 免费福利资源在线看片</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/harvard-divinity-school" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Harvard Divinity School</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/harvard-university" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Harvard 免费福利资源在线看片</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/erika-jahn" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">ERIKA JAHN</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Rethinking religion" class="rdf-meta"></span> Thu, 29 Oct 2009 17:09:48 +0000 trevor.kenney 4883 at /unews 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Community Members Receive Keys to the City /unews/article/university-lethbridge-community-members-receive-keys-city <div class="field field-name-field-op-author field-type-node-reference field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" rel="rnews:creator schema:creator"><div class="view view-openpublish-related-content view-id-openpublish_related_content view-display-id-block_1 view-dom-id-44233d4c470debd7bbeb62a428e80a7f"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"> <div class="views-field views-field-title"> <span class="views-label views-label-title">by</span> <span class="field-content"><a href="/unews/profile/trevor-kenney">Trevor Kenney</a></span> </div> <div class="views-field views-field-created"> <span class="field-content">July 8, 2009</span> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item even" property="rnews:articlebody schema:articleBody"> <p>Several individuals and community organizations with 'key' connections to the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge will receive the <a href="http://www.lethbridge.ca/home/Default.htm" rel="nofollow">City of Lethbridge's</a> highest honour on Friday, July 10 &ndash; the keys to the city.<br> <br> "This recognition is well deserved for all these recipients who, from many different walks of life, serve their community in a variety of ways," U of L President Bill Cade said. A complete list of recipients is outlined below.<br> <br> The "Key to the City" is a gift made by a city to a visiting dignitary or deserving resident. The key represents the city's welcome of the visitor by, symbolically, placing the city at the visitor's disposal.<br> <br> The practice of giving a key may be traced back to medieval times, when admission into a city was hampered walls and locked gates. Possession of the key symbolized free entry. In Lethbridge, the act of giving a key to the city is symbolic only, since the city has no gates to unlock.<br> <br> <strong>Keys 1 to 4</strong><br> Shirley McPherson, Chris Wilson, Shirley Kohuch and Diane Foster, playing out of the Lethbridge Curling Club, won the 2008 World Senior Ladies Championships in Vierum&auml;ki, Finland.<br> <br> <strong>Key 5 - Darcy Tamayose Novakowski</strong><br> Darcy received a literary award from the Canada Council for the Arts for her first novel, Odori. This award recognizes literary excellence by Canadian authors writing on Japan, Japanese themes or themes that promote mutual understanding between Canada and Japan. Darcy also wrote and illustrated an art exhibit, Riding Back and the Sacred Circle, which travelled throughout the Alberta School system encouraging the understanding of the Blackfoot culture. Her latest work Katie Be Quiet is targeted at youth.<br> <br> <strong>Key 6 - Del Allen</strong><br> Del is a well-known businessman and philanthropist. He was chosen Lethbridge Citizen of the Year for 2008 in appreciation for his work with groups as diverse as the Boys and Girls Club, the Third Academy, the Lethbridge Food Bank, the Royal Canadian Legion, Ducks Unlimited, the Lethbridge College and the City's Bright Lights Committee. Del's most recent achievement is convincing CP Rail to allow the lighting of the historical High Level Bridge to celebrate it's Centennial and then being pivotal to getting such a large task ready to go this coming fall.<br> <br> <strong>Key 7 - Vic Stasiuk</strong><br> Vic was recently inducted into the Alberta Sport Hall of Fame in honour of his commitment to the game of hockey. He enjoyed an NHL career with important roles in the line-ups of the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins. Vic played 745 NHL games, scoring 183 goals and 437 points. Thanks to his time with the Red Wings, he sports a very impressive Stanley Cup ring. After his playing career ended, Vic enjoyed a long coaching career in both the NHL (including a stint with the Vancouver Canucks) and the minor leagues.<br> <strong><br> Key 8 &ndash; Lethbridge Iron Works</strong><br> John and Bart Davies are accepting a key on behalf of Lethbridge Iron Works.<br> The company was recently included in a book entitled "Little Empires" (written by 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge professors M. Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff) which highlighted the value of Lethbridge's long-standing inter-generational corporate citizens to the community. Lethbridge Iron Works is a fourth generation family business, more than a century old. In an age when tension between religions has reached a critical point, the need for dialogue, understanding and tolerance has never been more important.</p> <p>This fall, recent U of L graduate and religious studies major Erika Jahn (BA '08) confidently headed out into the world, ready to begin her life's work in the scholarly pursuit of a more peaceful tomorrow. "I'm also interested in working abroad with a non-governmental organization to establish better systems of conflict resolution between different religious and ethnic communities."</p> <p>It's a promising future &ndash; one that will hopefully bring peace thanks to the efforts of Jahn and individuals like her.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/harvard-university" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Harvard 免费福利资源在线看片</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/harvard-divinity-school" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Harvard Divinity School</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/harvard-university" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Harvard 免费福利资源在线看片</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-person-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Person:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/person/erika-jahn" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">ERIKA JAHN</a></div></div></div></div><span property="rnews:name schema:name" content="Rethinking religion" class="rdf-meta"></span> Mon, 27 Oct 2008 16:32:40 +0000 trevor.kenney 5501 at /unews
