Are you ready for your flu shot?

Every fall, Canadians are confronted with two dilemmas – what to do with all the falling leaves and whether or not they should get the seasonal flu shot.

With the H1N1 pandemic of 2009 still fresh in our minds and the sound of coughing already echoing in U of L hallways, influenza vaccine will again be made available on campus for interested students, staff and faculty.

Unlike previous years, the Alberta government has provincially funded all vaccine this year, so there is no cost to anyone interested in getting the vaccine.

Flu clinics will start around campus after the Thanksgiving weekend. We are currently waiting for the vaccine to become available and will announce the first on-campus vaccine clinics through the Notice Board, U-Weekly, UNews and campus digital signage.

The on-campus clinics will be held for those aged 17 to 70, except for pregnant and breastfeeding women, who must go to the public health unit for their vaccine.

This particular vaccine protects against three strains of flu virus including an H1N1-like flu strain. More information on the vaccines will be forthcoming.

It may be the right time to begin the discussion with your family about the need for a flu shot.

Latrace and Groten, athletes of the week

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns handed out their Male and Female Athlete of the Week awards on Tuesday, with Justin Latrace and Janelle Groten earning the honours respectively.

Latrace, from the Horns men's soccer program, stepped into the starting lineup and was especially effective in a weekend series against ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary Dinos. A solid defender, Latrace made a number of solid plays on the back line. The Horns dropped 1-0 and 2-0 decisions to Calgary.

Groten plays for the women's soccer program. She created numerous scoring opportunities during a weekend home-and-home series against the Dinos.

In the two losses (1-0 and 3-0) to the Dinos she registered five shots on net. She currently leads the Horns with two goals on the year.

Pronghorns Athletics takes a break this weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday. The following weekend sees the Horns men's and women's hockey teams open their Canada West regular seasons with home-and-home series against ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary. The men play at home Friday night with the women at home on Saturday.

Horns into Canada West final

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns women's rugby team is looking for its third straight national title, with the first stage of that process a run through the Canada West conference championships this weekend in Edmonton.

On Friday afternoon, the Horns booked their spot in Sunday's title game with an 86-0 rout of Victoria Vikes in the first of two semifinal games.

The lopsided victory over the Vikes was hardly unexpected. After completing the inaugural Canada West conference schedule undefeated, the Pronghorns (4-0 CW, 7-0 overall) entered the conference championship tournament as the top seed. The Vikes (1-3 CW), who were thumped 71-0 by the Horns earlier in the season, were in as the fourth seed.

In the second semifinal, the Alberta Pandas (3-1 CW and second seeded) hosted the UBC Thunderbirds (2-2 CW, third seed).

The Horns expect to face Alberta in Sunday afternoon's 1 p.m. title game. The two teams clashed just last weekend at the new U of L Community Sports Stadium with the Horns prevailing 22-7.

In other Horns' news, a busy weekend of Canada West action sees the men's hockey team, along with both men's and women's soccer teams, all playing at home. As well, the women's basketball team hosts the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Montana Western for a pair of non-conference games.

Men's Hockey

The Pronghorn men's hockey team (1-2-1 CW, 5-6-2 overall) will have revenge on its mind this weekend as they host the UBC Thunderbirds (3-0-1 CW, 4-3-1 overall). The T-Birds knocked out the Horns in the first round of playoffs last year in three games, all three games going to overtime, including a double OT series deciding game.

The T-Birds have opened the season with two strong weeks and are ranked ninth in the first CIS Top-10 rankings. The T-Birds swept the previously undefeated Manitoba Bisons last weekend in Vancouver.

Puck drops both Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Soccer

The women's soccer team (0-10-0 CW) plays its final home games of the season this weekend, hosting the CIS fourth-ranked Victoria Vikes (6-1-3 CW), Saturday, and Fraser Valley Cascades (4-3-3 CW) on Sunday.

Earlier this season, the Horns were beaten 3-0 by both teams at their respective home fields.

Kick-off for both games is scheduled for noon at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Community Stadium.

The men's soccer team (1-6-3 CW), coming off a pair of ties last weekend on the road, also hosts the Victoria Vikes (5-5-1 CW) Saturday and Fraser Valley Cascades (3-7-1) Sunday.

The Horns will attempt to play spoiler this weekend, as the Vikes are holding onto the final playoff spot in Canada West, only two points ahead of the Calgary Dinos.

Women's Hockey

The Women's Hockey team (1-3-0 CW, 4-6-0 overall) heads out on the road, traveling to Vancouver to face the UBC Thunderbirds (1-1-0 CW).

The Thunderbirds had a bye this past weekend and split their season opening series with the Calgary Dinos over Thanksgiving weekend in Vancouver.

Puck drops in Vancouver at 7:30 p.m. PST both Friday and Saturday nights at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sport Centre.

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team (0-0 CW, 4-2 overall) will conclude its non-conference schedule this weekend, hosting the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Montana Western in a pair of games.

The Horns have had a solid pre-season, winning a tournament in Kamloops and posting another strong showing last weekend in Regina. The Horns defeated the Brandon Bobcats and lost two close games to strong Canada West teams in Victoria and Regina.

Tip off for Friday night's game is 7 p.m., while Saturday's game is set for 4 p.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

Men's Basketball

The men's basketball team (0-0 CW, 1-1 overall) will also complete the pre-season this weekend and heads back down south for the second consecutive week, traveling to Montana to face the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Great Falls and Montana Tech.

The Horns basketball teams will kick off their respective conference schedules next weekend, traveling to Edmonton to face the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta.

Women's fastball program looking for return to action

Women's fastball is alive at the collegiate level. The next goal is to make it well.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has had an on-again off-again relationship with women's fastball and Bill Halma would like to see a strong return next fall. In order to do so, he needs the word out now that the program is ready to roll.

"We've got about eight to 10 ladies very interested in playing but we need 14 to 16, of which we probably need at least two to three solid pitchers. That's been a real problem for us in the past," says Halma, manager, programs for Sport and Recreation Services, adding that the program is also searching for a coach.

Women's fastball falls under the "semi-competitive" sport tag, along with U of L club sports like golf and curling. These are all self-funded activities that participate in leagues outside the auspices of official Canada West competition.

They have a following however and just because they have no official status now, that can always change – just see the history of women's rugby.

The U of L has fielded a women's fastball team for four of the last six seasons but after two years away from competition, Halma would like to see it restored this fall.

"Nobody comes here specifically to play women's fastball but if we were to have a strong program, maybe it's just another one of those activities available on campus that may help sway someone's decision to enroll here," he says. "We're always looking to provide our students with as many outlets as possible and this is one I think could be very popular."

Playing in the Alberta Intercollegiate Women's Fastball Association, the U of L would challenge a mix of university and college squads (allowing the U of L to also include Lethbridge College players). Beginning a schedule in early September and wrapping up around Thanksgiving, teams try to play three to five games in a weekend set. The challenge, of course, is finding field availability and compressing a schedule into a tight timeframe.

"We have a bit of a challenge here in Lethbridge because there is no formal fastball league anymore," Halma says. "Unfortunately, then we're only gaining players from outside the city of Lethbridge."

He currently has a core group of six to eight players regularly working out at an indoor facility in preparation for next fall. Anyone interested in joining the program can contact Halma at 403-329-5107 or via e-mail at halma@uleth.ca
