Oxytocin, unfortunately, has a very short half-life meaning the hormone degrades quickly and soon becomes unstable, making it expensive and difficult to store.

The Lethbridge High School team together with their Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge undergraduate student and graduate student advisors and their faculty advisor, Dr. HJ Wieden, successfully developed a genetic circuit (BioBricks) to reprogram a harmless laboratory strain of the common bacterium Escherichia coli to express a stabilized variant of Oxytocin. Details about their project and the team itself can be found on their project website (wiki) http://2013hs.igem.org/Team:Lethbridge_Canada

In addition to being named the top team at the competition, the Lethbridge team also was awarded prizes for the "Best Bio Brick" and "Best Wiki". A total of 30 international teams competed at the event last weekend.

The iGEM Foundation fosters scientific research and education through organizing and operating the iGEM Competition, the premier student synthetic biology competition. It also facilitates scientific research and education by establishing and operating the Registry of Standard Biological Parts, a community collection of open source biological components.

The organization promotes the advancement of science and education by developing an international open community of students and practitioners in schools, laboratories, research institutes and industry.

"One of the real values of the U of L's commitment to the iGEM program is that it is building bridges between high school and university experiences," say Dr. HJ Wieden, a U of L synthetic biology researcher who served as an advisor to the team. "These exceptional students will be the innovators and entrepreneurs who will add tremendous value to Alberta's economy and quality of life in the future."

Students from the Lethbridge team represented various Lethbridge high schools including Chinook High School, Winston Churchill High School, Catholic Central High School and Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. The team has successfully applied for funding from Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (geekStarter) to support their project.

"This result is absolutely exceptional, though I am not surprised. Previous iGEM competitions have placed Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge undergraduate and our Lethbridge high school teams among the best in the world on multiple occasions," says U of L President and Vice-Chancellor Mike Mahon. "The Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge has a strong track record of attracting world-leading faculty like Dr. Wieden and we are committed to partnering with the community through programs like the iGEM High School Jamboree. It also illustrates that our local high schools are producing some incredible young scientists."

The Lethbridge high school team plans on continuing its Oxytocin project next year.

Related Absolutely. Can it be done? That's what the group intends to find out.

That's why the U of L is rewarding them with scholarships – to help them pursue their interest in science and research at the U of L.

The $1,000 scholarship credit per student covers the cost of about two courses, and is available upon their successful application and acceptance to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. The students will be presented with their awards at a brief ceremony that takes place Wednesday, July 11 beginning at 4 p.m. in Anderson Hall, room AH100 (Andy's Place).

"When the iGEM competition expanded to include high school students, the U of L saw an opportunity to follow suit and this year 36 students participated in the program," says Dr. Andy Hakin, the U of L's provost and vice president (academic). "Not only does this provide valuable hands-on learning opportunities, but it also augments the existing Alberta science curriculum. We are happy to be able to extend this world-class program into local high schools, exposing younger students to the unique opportunities available by pursuing a science education."

Team spokesperson Erin Kelly, a recent Catholic Central High School graduate entering fist year at the U of L in the fall, says the group brainstormed ideas with U of L iGEM team members and chemistry and biochemistry researchers that had a combination of what she describes as 'do-ability' and social relevance. They also looked to past iGEM projects for inspiration, since the work created by all iGEM teams worldwide is in the public domain and archived in the interests of conducting innovative research.

"A team at Berkeley created bacteria that could produce haemoglobin (a key component of blood) to function as a new type of red blood cell," says Kelly. "We would like to try this with the cells in the pancreas, which were damaged by the onset of Type 1 Diabetes. Another team from Missouri had figured out how to get the cell to detect glucose, which would let the cell know when there is too much sugar. Once glucose is detected, we could work on secreting insulin."

Kelly says the NASA capsule is a perfect place to house the bacteria, sustain it, and act as a filter to move the insulin from the capsule to the person.

"We would have a lot of work to do before we can get to that stage, because we have to engineer some other steps into the process. We expect that a project like this would be one that could carry through a few years of iGEM teamwork, and could be used by other teams to move their own projects forward."

At the U of L, the iGEM team concept has evolved to a point where the university-level group runs its own funded lab, regularly places in the top levels of international competitions, and has provided a significant boost to undergraduate students who wish to pursue further research at a masters level.

Their ongoing project involves engineering bacteria to recognize – and consume – harmful materials in oilsands tailings ponds.

"We have welcomed high-school researchers to the U of L iGEM group in the past, but to have this large number of interested and engaged students is a really great experience for all of us," says Dr. Hans-Joachim Wieden, a U of L biochemistry researcher and one of the faculty supervisors for both groups. "The additional support the students are receiving from the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in the form of scholarships is a great indicator of their achievement, and we look forward to having them join us as students when they begin their university studies.
UPDATE: Joblonkay has gone on to study at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto and recently uncovered a 3,000-year-old monumental statue of King Suppiluliuma while on a dig in Turkey. It was during his first semester at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge that Joblonkay ultimately decided he would rather unearth ancient history than make history in the courtroom.

"It was really on a whim that I decided I wanted to discover and contribute to our knowledge of the human past," says Joblonkay, currently pursuing a master's degree in Ancient Near-Eastern Studies at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto. "When I began attending the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge, I really had no idea how big the field of archaeology is, but Dr. Walter Aufrecht intrigued me with his knowledge of the ancient Near East – particularly ancient Syria-Palestine. My first year classes in the archaeology of Mesopotamia and Classical Hebrew were what really drove me to pursue Syro-Palestinian archaeology."

Alumnus Darren Joblonkay has seen the world through field work programs from the U of L.

During his U of L years, Joblonkay took full advantage of the unique opportunities the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, and its smaller, more personable nature, is able to provide to undergraduate students.

"Smaller classes make for more interesting seminars," explains Joblonkay. "Having the chance to work for your professors at the undergraduate level, to be a student marker, getting experience giving presentations in class, being part of a class project because there are only five students – these opportunities aren't available to most undergraduates elsewhere.

"My experiences working in a lab, working as a research assistant and getting the opportunity to take on roles with greater responsibility at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ gave me a substantial edge over those students who attended larger institutions at the bachelor level."

During the summer of 2007, Joblonkay travelled with fellow students under the direction of U of L professor, Dr. Shawn Bubel, to Tel Beth Shemesh, an archaeological site 20km west of Jerusalem. Since then, Joblonkay has spent every summer working at archaeological digs around Israel.

"I think the real "aha" moment that led to my career was attending the field school at Tel Beth Shemesh," says Joblonkay. "It was the shear intensity of the excavation experience. Where else do you get to unearth a bronze spear point used over 3,000 years ago, to walk on a tampered or cobble floor that hasn't been stepped on in literally millennia, to experience a sunrise as you watch a Bedouin man tending to a flock of sheep? These and many other experiences all come together and form very fond memories of what it really means to be an archaeologist."

The opportunity to continue his academic studies with the exclusive Near and Middle Eastern Civilization Department at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto is something for which Joblonkay is very grateful. He gives a lot of credit for his preparation and acceptance to this one-of-a-kind Canadian program to his professors at the U of L.

"The professors at the U of L are amazing. They prepared me for graduate work at one of Canada's most prestigious institutions. They are supportive, approachable, well qualified and they do a great job of teaching and incorporating their own research into their classes," remembers Joblonkay. "There is a great combination of traditional and younger scholars who bring new ideas and theories to the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬. They expected the height of academic excellence and pushed me to achieve. Their passion for the discipline really rubbed off on me."

Joblonkay brings that passion to his work at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Toronto, where he works as an archaeological assistant while he continues his master's degree. In the summer of 2011, he will be digging at Tell Tayinat in Turkey, which he hopes will lead to his dissertation.

"I would like to eventually be a professor in Near Eastern Archaeology. I believe it was one of my mentors who told me once that "any archaeologist would be lying if they said they didn't like digging up treasures", but our discipline runs deeper than that," he says. "We attempt to preserve and understand humanity's cultural history. We are all captivated by what humans were able to achieve in the past."

GET THE FACTS

· Joblonkay graduated from the U of L with Great Distinction, earning a BSc in Archaeology and Geography while concentrating on Geographical Information Science.

By the time he graduated from Catholic Central High School however, his interest in travel and history far outweighed his fascination with the law.

During his U of L years, Joblonkay took full advantage of the unique opportunities the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬, and its smaller, more personable nature, is able to provide to undergraduate students.

Alumnus Darren Joblonkay had no idea when he entered the U of L that he would eventually find archaeology as a career.

During the summer of 2007, Joblonkay travelled with fellow students under the direction of
U of L professor, Dr.

• Joblonkay graduated from the U of L with Great Distinction, fast track to a law degree. Now, 14 years later, he's navigating a museum gallery with a group of 10 year-old kids as they banter about video games – and he couldn't be happier.

Recently, Suriano launched Seek Your Own Proof, a new online game at Discoverykids.com. The game targets 6-12 year-olds and follows the story of three investigative siblings – Aidan, Milanie and Heiko Munro – who discover a secret underground agency known as the Central Institute for Exploration (CIE). The teens are quickly drawn into a chase through time and history against enemy agents who are plotting to rewrite the past, change the present and alter the future. Online users can play the game in traditional form but also have the option of taking field missions to real museums and landmarks.

After debuting at the Discovery Times Square Exposition in New York, Suriano brought his game home to the Galt Museum.

"To start with, we're trying to make the history in your backyard the most relevant," says Suriano. "It's neat if kids get a little bit enlightened about their own surroundings. We're also trying to make it available in as many cities as possible, so that if I take my kids to Calgary or Edmonton on the weekend, a place like the Edmonton Art Gallery is a part of it."

Jason Suriano addresses the crowd at the Galt Museum.

Considering Suriano laughs about being one of the last of his generation to begin using a computer, there is no lack of irony in the fact he now designs computer games for a living.

"In Grade 12 I was still submitting hand-written essays," says Suriano, a Catholic Central High School graduate. "I always had a real interest in technology, it was always one of the things that I liked, I just didn't know how to get into it."

He began his post-secondary career at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta but decided to come home to the U of L after one year. It was in Lethbridge that he laid the foundation for his future. "I'm a firm believer in the "things-happen for-a-reason" train of thought," he says of abandoning his legal aspirations.

Embracing the liberal arts philosophy at the U of L, Suriano discovered his passion. His humanities focus would then serve him well as he transitioned back to the U of A for a second degree, an MA in Humanities Computing with specialization in comparative literature.

"Before you work in the technology field, it's essential to have a grounding in the arts. Research and writing are keys, particularly with what I'm doing right now," he explains. "The work I do involves a lot of fact gathering, making sense of blocks of content from museums and distilling it all into worksheets and then online forms." Once out of school, Suriano began working in the non-profit sector. With both a writing and technical background, he was hard to pigeon hole and found himself working for the Heritage Community Foundation as head of the Educational Learning Objects division.

After a stint where he did consulting work for his company, Hotrocket Studios, he and business partners Ken Bautista and Norman Mendoza struck off on their own and the seeds for Seek Your Own Proof were born. Their big break came when they secured Telefilm Canada and Canadian Film Centre (CFC) Telus Funding, one of only two projects in Canada. It allowed them to flush out the idea and enter it in the Kidscreen PitchIt! Competition in New York, where they won the top prize.

"That was the first sign that we were on to something pretty cool," says Suriano.

"The neat thing is that seed idea we came up with in 2005 is still novel now, there's really not a lot of this going on, especially within our demographic."

Galt Museum executive director Susan Burrows-Johnson says the game is a wonderful way to connect with today's generation of technologically savvy kids.

"Almost no one who works in museums plays games, and everybody under 18 does, so there's this huge generation gap that we've been worried about," she says. "It's not that history isn't interesting to them, because it is, it's the generation gap around the technology that we need to pay attention to. Kids use different tools in their learning process and that's the gap we're trying to bridge."

To come full circle and stimulate learning in his hometown is especially gratifying for Suriano, now a father of two.

"I approached the Galt a couple years ago when we were starting this portion of the project and Susan was very open to it and supportive of the concept," says Suriano. "It's great we are now ready to bring it back here in this form."

Get The Facts

Suriano now lives in Edmonton with his wife Jen and their children Ethan (4) and Malcolm (1).

The debut field mission of the game involved facts around the King Tut exhibit at Discovery Times Square Exposition in New York. Officials estimate handing out more than 500 worksheets per week to visiting kids.

Seek Your Own Proof is available for play or purchase at www.seekyourownproof.com

CIE and Seek Your Own Proof have been recognized with several awards including: Grand Prize Winner at the TEC VenturePrize competition in Alberta; Best in Show at the Fusion Digital Media Venture Forum in Vancouver; PitchIt! (BA '01) was focused on the fast track to a law degree.

"The work I do involves a lot of fact gathering, making sense of blocks of content from museums and distilling it all into worksheets and then online forms."

Once out of school, Suriano began working in the non-profit sector.

"I approached the Galt a couple years ago when we were starting this portion of the project, and Susan was very open to it and supportive of the concept," says Suriano. "It's great we are now ready to bring it back here in this form."

GET THE FACTS

• Suriano now lives in Edmonton with his wife Jen and their children Ethan (4) and Malcolm (1).

• The debut field mission of the game involved facts around the King Tut exhibit at Discovery Times Square Exposition in New York. Officials estimate handing out more than 500 worksheets per week to visiting kids.

• Seek Your Own Proof is available for play or purchase at www.seekyourownproof.com

• CIE and Seek Your Own Proof have been recognized with several awards including: Grand Prize Winner at the TEC VenturePrize competition in Alberta; Best in Show at the Fusion Digital Media Venture Forum in Vancouver; PitchIt! Winner at KidScreen Summit in New York; and Most Promising Company at the Canadian New Media Awards

• Favourite U of L professors of Suriano's included <a Had he been, he certainly wouldn't be completing his fifth year of hockey at the Canada West level, nor would he be a three-time Academic All Canadian preparing to graduate this spring.

"You know what you're going to get from him," Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's hockey coach Greg Gatto says succinctly. "He's been our first-line centre, our fourth-line centre, he's played wing and one weekend in Calgary we even put him on (defence) for a couple shifts. You couldn't ask for anything more than what he gives you."

That's pretty much been the story for Lavorato's entire career – he'll do what he has to in order to get the job done.

Lavorato, a Lethbridge native and Catholic Central High School grad, is a five-foot-nine inch grinder who never scored more than 15 goals in junior hockey and has 19 career goals in five years at the Canada West level. While the numbers are not outstanding, testament to the value of his role is the fact he wore the 'A' of an assistant captain for two seasons.

"That's how I got to the junior level and how I got to this level and what's allowed me to stay here for five years," Lavorato says. "I don't think there's any shame in not being that top scoring guy. Everyone's got a role on the team, and I've kind of risen to that hard-working, mucking it up kind of role."

He takes the same attitude to the classroom, where study habits mimic his on-ice tendencies – he works to achieve his goals.

"I'm a believer that you get out of it what you put into it, so the harder you work at it, the more you'll get out of your education," he says.

Preparing to graduate with a degree in finance from the Faculty of Management, Lavorato dabbled in a number of areas over his years at the U of L and for a while, looked like he was going to become a teacher.

"I enjoyed my experience in education but decided it wasn't what I wanted to do forever, and thought that I had a few more options in the management faculty."

That he managed to maintain his high academic standing despite the shift in focus is impressive but not unexpected. Lavorato knew all along that when he came to university, his studies were the prime focus.

"I've always been a pretty good student, so I'd had those study habits already developed coming in here. With my family, it's always been an emphasis to perform well in school," he says, acknowledging the recognition of being named to the Academic All Canadian roster is a point of pride.
"You bet. It shows a lot as far as time management skills. It's rewarding to know you've put in some hard work over the past year, and it's nice to get that little bit of cash and a plaque to prove you did it."

As a fifth-year student, Lavorato took a step back from his official leadership duties with the Horns, declining to wear a letter on his sweater this season. Ironically, it may have further cemented his role as a team leader.

"Coming into my last year, I just thought that my priorities and focus might be in a little different place. I really wanted to focus on school and finish that up right and put some extra effort there," he says. "Not having a letter doesn't change who I am, I'm the same person. I thought it was time for some of the younger guys to maybe take the reins."

Lavorato is already transitioning into his post-hockey career. A representative on Student Athletes Council, Lavorato says the committee has been working hard to establish a stronger connection between all the Pronghorn programs. He also plans to be an active alumnus, supporting the men's hockey program in any manner he can. He sees a program moving forward and with his local roots, wants to continue to see homegrown players donning Pronghorns blue.

"That's just (Lavorato), anything you ask him to do, he always steps up," says Gatto.

That's why, as the next phase of his life begins, the transition will be greeted with a similar work ethic.

"My options are pretty open right now but the tough thing is I'm facing the realization I'm entering the real world in a couple months," he laughs.
