Local nursing education program achieves accreditation

The Nursing Education in Southwestern Alberta (NESA) program, delivered collaboratively by Lethbridge College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, has met national standards for nursing schools and obtained accreditation by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN).

The NESA program has always been an approved program at the provincial level. CASN accreditation means the program has met the national standards for nursing programs across Canada.

“We have accreditation for five years, which is fantastic,” says Chris Hosgood, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences. “It absolutely confirms what I’ve always thought, which is that we have a wonderful program with incredibly engaged and dedicated instructors.”

“This accreditation is a result of exceptional collaboration between the two institutions,” says Debra Bardock, dean of Lethbridge College’s Centre for Health and Wellness. “The program is a success due to the commitment, dedication and consistent pursuit of excellence by faculty and staff to support the success of students.”

The designation means the NESA program meets the standards for both curriculum and faculty research. The program offers a united curriculum over four years, with students spending their first two years at the College and their final two years at the U of L.

“The benefit for students is that they have a CASN-accredited program supporting their access into graduate programming in nursing, as well as international nursing opportunities,” says Hosgood, adding that the U of L offers a master of nursing and a doctorate in population studies in health.

“Students also receive life experience that is the best of both worlds,” says Bardock. “They experience both university and college life, and ultimately get to benefit from the success of the high-level collaboration between the two institutions.”

The accreditation process took around three years. The first step was a self-study of the program according to a set of criteria identified by CASN. After the self-report was completed, four external reviewers from other nursing schools in Canada, but outside of Alberta, visited both the U of L and the College.

“The reviewers met with students in the classroom and at their clinical sites, partners in the community, faculty members, and senior administrators at both institutions and in the health system,” says Hosgood.

“The support of our external partners cannot be over-stated,” says Bardock. “Health environments across southern Alberta that provide practice-based opportunities for our students are as invested in their success as we are.”

Programs like NESA, where students spend the first two years at Lethbridge College and the final two years at the U of L, aren’t uncommon. However, the level of collaboration between the College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is unique, says Hosgood. The collective approach to the program means both sides share knowledge and resources, with a focus on excellence and student success.

The NESA program was launched in 2002 and is celebrating a decade of graduating students in 2016.

Cor Van Raay Agribusiness Case Competition now accepting student registrations

Student participants are now being sought for the inaugural Cor Van Raay Agribusiness Case Competition, a unique new venture presented collaboratively by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College.

A student-directed initiative, the competition is designed for students to expand their knowledge in the areas of agriculture and business on a global scale, all the while introducing students to key players in the agribusiness sector. The competition is scheduled to run Nov. 6-8, 2015.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for students to gain practical experience in finding ways to improve agriculture practices by implementing modern business theories in an agricultural setting,” says ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge management student Monica Gorham, one of the event organizers. “It’s also a huge networking event, a chance for students to get to know future employers and for event sponsors to meet potential employees.”

Bringing students from both of the area’s post-secondary institutions together for the competition is a natural fit and speaks to the manner in which the schools’ programs complement each other.

The inaugural event will primarily include undergraduate students from the U of L and Lethbridge College. Teams of three to four students will be presented with a written business problem and given four hours to analyze and solve. Teams then present their findings to a panel of judges, often made up of ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, industry sponsors and the community at large.

The competition is open to all students at either the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge or Lethbridge College and students can register as an individual. It is not necessary to have a background in agriculture or business but they are considered strengths.

Fashion design and fine arts students to benefit from partnership between Lethbridge College and ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge

Creative art and design students from across Canada can take advantage of a new partnership between Lethbridge College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Starting this fall, the agreement provides for an easy transfer from the college’s Fashion Design and Sustainable Production diploma program into a degree program in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Department of Theatre and Dramatic Arts.

The two-plus-two opportunity enables college students, who meet program criteria, to transfer to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and receive two years of credit for their previous work at the college. These students will enrol in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s post-diploma Bachelor of Fine Arts – Dramatic Arts program with a major in Technical/Design and finish their last two years of the degree program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Upon graduation, students have two credentials – a diploma from the College and a degree from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

The college’s Fashion Design and Sustainable Production is a one-of-a-kind program providing students with skills and experience needed to shape the apparel industry. The sustainability-focused curriculum provides valuable hands-on training and experience through research projects and creative challenges. After four semesters of courses, students have the option of participating in a 200-hour intensive internship, an unrivaled opportunity in western Canada.

“Our strong partnership with the university provides valuable educational opportunities for our students,” says Dennis Sheppard, Dean, Centre of Applied Management, Lethbridge College. “This two-plus-two agreement is an example of how the college is working collaboratively with a partner just across the river to lead and transform education in Alberta.”

At the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, Technical/Design majors combine academic studies with an immersive approach that prepares graduates for the ever-changing world of theatre, whether they want to work with established theatre companies or on their own artist plans.

Although this is the first agreement involving the Faculty of Fine Arts’ programs, Lethbridge College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge have several other two-plus-two program opportunities including:

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ establishes first therapeutic recreation degree program in Alberta

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge’s Faculty of Health Sciences is unveiling a new post-diploma degree program that will advance the discipline of therapeutic recreation and eventually lead to the establishment of the first accredited therapeutic recreation degree in Canada.

The Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation is designed to prepare graduates to become eligible as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS), a career field that is emerging as one of the most promising growth professions in health care.

“In conversation with government, employers and other post-secondary institutions we became aware of the need in Alberta for a degree option in therapeutic recreation,” says Dr. Chris Hosgood, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences. “In the spirit of Campus Alberta, we created a task force that included all stakeholders in the province, including NorQuest College and Lethbridge College, to develop a laddering opportunity for students to move into a two-year post-diploma degree program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.”

Therapeutic recreation is described as a process that utilizes functional intervention, education and recreation participation to enable individuals with cognitive, physical, emotional and social limitations to acquire or increase the skills and knowledge that allow them to enjoy the leisure aspects of their life.

What it translates to in the workforce is varied and open-ended.

“The profession is really client driven, having the client tell you what they need as opposed to a therapeutic recreation professional telling them what they need,” says Tristan Hopper, a CTRS and master’s student who is currently at the U of L supporting Dr. Jerry Singleton as he assists in setting up the new program. Singleton is on secondment from Dalhousie ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, where a therapeutic recreation degree has been offered since 1990.

“I’ve worked in hospitals with clients who have a mental illness. People often think that therapeutic recreation has to be involving clients in sport, but some people aren’t into that,” says Hopper. “Maybe they just want to go to a coffee shop to meet friends and socialize but don’t know how to ride transit or how to properly order a drink once they get there. That’s all a part of what we do.”

The new degree program is being lauded by the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) as addressing a provincial need. The program will begin accepting students for the Fall 2015 semester.

“This degree program supports ATRA’s mission to regulate therapeutic recreation through defined programs of study and educational courses for the purpose of registration requirements, a clearly defined entry level for applicants and continuing competence programs for practitioners, standards of practice and a code of ethics,” says ATRA Executive Director Dianne Bowtell. “With this clearly defined therapeutic recreation educational program in place in Alberta, the profession can advance the discipline to improve the health and quality of life of Albertans living with disabilities and illnesses, older adults and others who are marginalized in society.”

Those eligible to apply to the new degree program must first complete a therapeutic recreation diploma course, such as that offered at Lethbridge College. Singleton says the value of the added two years of study and a degree designation is substantial.

“Lethbridge College is doing great things with their program but a diploma allows graduates the ability to be a programmer, not a CTRS,” he says. “The two extra years will enable the individual to develop the critical thinking skills to not only provide an engagement opportunity but to assess the effectiveness of it and how it could be applied to help other individuals in the future. The degree also indicates to the field a minimum level of competency, a quality assurance that will enable graduates the opportunity to compete for positions across Canada and the United States.”

The U of L is also beginning the process by which the degree program will be professionally accredited, something that even Dalhousie has yet to pursue. It would make the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation the first accredited therapeutic recreation degree in Canada.

Field of Opportunity

From droughts and pests to crop disease and unseasonable snowstorms, farming in this semi-arid section of Alberta’s Big Sky Country comes with big challenges. But from the early First Nations peoples to the homesteaders of the 1900s to today’s technologically savvy crop and livestock producers, Albertans have a long history of ingenuity and resilience. And thanks to forward-thinking donors, ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge researchers and trailblazing initiatives for agriculturalists-in-training, that strong tradition of inventiveness will continue in the future.

“As global food demand increases, the need for Alberta agriculture is becoming stronger than ever,” says Dr. Matthew Letts, the U of L’s interim associate vice-president (research). “To take advantage of this opportunity, there is a critical need for innovative agricultural research and data-driven agribusiness.”

These types of activity, he notes, are happening at – and are supported by – the U of L.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is located in the heart of southern Alberta, where farming and ranching are among the most important regional sources of jobs and wealth. Many faculty are experts in fields connected to agriculture, including biotechnology, remote sensing, economics and management.

In addition, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is a leading-edge learning environment for aspiring agriculturalists. An increasing number of graduate students are in agriculture-related disciplines while the Agricultural Studies program enables undergraduates to learn about the physical and economic interrelationships between agricultural production, marketing, trade and nutrient management, water, grazing and rangeland and riparian management.

Indeed, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s reputation for excellence in agricultural research and education is what led Cor Van Raay, a leading Canadian cattle producer, to make a major gift to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Last June, the founder of Cor Van Raay Farms donated a total of $5 million to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College to
establish the Cor Van Raay Southern Alberta Agribusiness Program.

Through this initiative, a joint program offered by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the College will be created, focusing on agriculture-related educational opportunities in economics, business development, entrepreneurship, finance, management, commodities trading and leadership, all with an emphasis on agricultural innovation. Van Raay’s donation will support endowed student awards, enhanced academic programming, an innovation and entrepreneurship program (at the U of L) and an agriculture entrepreneur-in-residence (at LC).

These initiatives will be complemented by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ’s new Research Chair in Potato Science. This position, announced in July, will be supported by a $1-million investment over five years from the Potato Growers of Alberta, McCain Foods, ConAgra Foods Lamb Weston and Cavendish Farms.

The Chair in potato science will expand research in the province’s potato industry, which is worth more than $1 billion annually. It is anticipated that the chairholder will collaborate with producers and industry partners, create additional learning opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students and help develop new potato varieties.

Together, the Cor Van Raay Southern Alberta Agribusiness Program and the Research Chair in Potato Science are expected to stimulate agricultural research and agribusiness at the U of L’s new Centre for Agricultural Research and Agribusiness Innovation (CARAI). Centre researchers will study pest and disease mechanisms, develop surveillance and detection mechanisms, and explore the use of remote sensing to produce data-driven agriculture.

The CARAI will prepare the agribusiness leaders of the future. Students will have access to fellowships and co-op placements, and will benefit from industrial research partnerships with producers and processors. In the end, graduates will be primed to develop solutions that will meet the demands of a growing global population.

“Collectively,” concludes Letts, “all of these initiatives will strengthen our position as a leader in agricultural education and research.”

Generous gift from local family will allow growth in engineering at Lethbridge College and nursing at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge

The trades and technologies facility at Lethbridge College and the Bachelor of Nursing After Degree (BNAD) program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge will receive a boost from Al and Vera Kenwood, local business owners, the two Lethbridge post-secondary institutions announced today.

This generous gift will see $25,000 go toward the Lethbridge College trades and technologies facility in the area of Engineering Technologies and $25,000 toward the BNAD program at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. The BNAD program is a joint program of Lethbridge College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, with the first year of the program offered at the college and the second and third years offered at the university. Al was a civil engineer and Vera was a nurse, and both strongly believe in education and the value of investing in these industries and trades at a local level.

"Vera and I have enjoyed a long and happy life in Lethbridge raising our family and involving ourselves in the business community at a time when the city was growing and defining its role as a leader in educational opportunities,” says Al Kenwood. “Our desire to support Lethbridge College and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge stems from our pride in our community and the important roles each institution plays in advancing educational pursuits for their students."

The trades and technologies facility will position the college as the institution for trades training in southern Alberta. Ground was broken on the project in April 2014 and the facility will be open and ready for students in the fall of 2017.

“Lethbridge College is thankful for the generous gift from the Kenwood family,” says Dr. Paula Burns, Lethbridge College President and CEO. “Through this gift, the college will add value to our new facilities which will help us support a vibrant learning environment to engage our students with creative instructional technology.”

With a 165,000 square foot facility that will support more than 880 new learners across eight trades areas and four technology programs including the Engineering Technologies programs, Lethbridge College will support new and emerging trends in trades and technologies programs and practices, including skills simulation and new equipment for both training and applied research.

"This thoughtful gift from the Kenwood family will help Lethbridge College continue to provide our engineering students with access to cutting-edge technology and learning environments,” says Dr. Sandy Vanderburgh, dean of Applied Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Chris Hosgood, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, says students in their final year of the BNAD program will benefit from the largesse of the Kenwood family.

“This scholarship will encourage the best applicants and support them through their studies,” says Hosgood. “We appreciate the fact the Kenwoods choose to invest in our students and local post-secondary institutions.”

The BNAD program is offered to students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in another discipline and acknowledges students’ previous degree accomplishments while still providing the full nursing education experience. Importantly, the program also creates a new path into baccalaureate nursing and the profession.

“Students in the BNAD program are a perfect fit at a liberal arts institution like the U of L. They are students who come into the program with a wealth of experience and then are able to focus that experience into the context of nursing. They are students who are inquisitive, broad-minded and hard-working,” says Dr. Mark Pijl Zieber, a Health Sciences professor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge.

Al Kenwood was raised in Lethbridge after his parents emigrated from Lithuania. He trained in civil engineering at McGill ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. Vera was raised in Taber and trained in nursing at the Sacred Heart in Spokane, Washington. They married in 1952 and raised their family in Lethbridge. Al was a Foundation Board Member at Lethbridge College in 1987/88.

The Kenwood’s family business has been in operation for 57 years as owners of Kenwood Construction and Engineering Ltd. from 1957 to 1982 when Mr. Kenwood diversified his business holdings by developing various commercial properties.

Horns bolstered by Kodiak recruits

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns head coach Mike Hansen has begun re-tooling the men's basketball roster with the signing of a pair of ACAC all-stars from the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

Hansen announced the signing of southern Alberta products Rob Olsen and Jared Baker on Monday afternoon, wlecoming a pair of players whom Hansen previously coached at Lethbridge College during the 2009-2010 season. Olsen and Baker then embarked on their two year missions for the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. This past fall, both returned to the Kodiaks program and did not miss a beat, finishing one-two in team scoring.

Both Olsen and Baker have also excelled in the classroom, with each being named CCAA Academic All-Canadians this past season.

Olsen, a 6'1" guard from Cardston, Alta., finished fifth in South Division scoring averaging just over 19 points per game and was named an ACAC first team all-star, while shooting 49.6% from the field and over 47% from behind the arc. He also added 6 rebounds per game and 2.39 assists.

Prior to joining the Kodiaks, Olsen starred for the Cardston Cougars and was named the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League MVP in his final season (2008-09).

"Rob is an incredible talent and an outstanding young man," says Hansen. "I believe Rob is the best player to come out of Cardston since his uncle and former high school coach Ken McMurray. Ken was an all-Canadian for the Horns and I'm confident that Rob will have the same success with us."

Hansen adds that Olsen is also very accomplished off the court and represents the ideal of the Canada West student-athlete.

"Rob represents everything we look for in a recruit, he was not only an all-star, but a CCAA Academic All-Canadian. He is a character kid and will be a great ambassador for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge."

A Raymond, Alta., product, Jared Baker was named an ACAC second-team all-star this past season and averaged 15 points per game for the Kodiaks, while adding just under 6 rebounds and 3.13 assists per contest.

In high school, Baker was a two sport athlete, winning provincial titles for the Raymond Comets in both football (2008) and Basketball (2009). He led the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League in scoring in grade 11 with 24.1 points per game and was named league MVP in 2007-08.

"I'm very excited to be coaching Jared again," says Hansen. "He is such an incredible competitor and is willing to do whatever is needed for a team to be successful.

"He has evolved from being a shooter to an all-around player. Jared has a high basketball IQ and the success he's experienced playing for Todd Heggie's Raymond teams shows in the way he carries himself. His CCAA Academic All-Canadian also demonstrates that Jared expects excellence for himself."

The men's basketball team will look to round out its 2013-14 recruiting class in the coming weeks.

Summer Games work earns group Senate Volunteer Award

Thanks to the dedicated volunteer work of these four individuals, for four days in July 2012, more than 2,600 athletes came to Lethbridge to compete in the 2012 Alberta Summer Games.

The Senate of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is proud to recognize their service with the 2013 ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Volunteer Award.

Nancy Walker, Deb Marek, Cheryl Meheden and Jochen Bocksnick sat on the Board of Directors for the games as well as managing their own specific portfolios. They began preparation for the games more than two years before the event, and each played an important role in organizing the games. The games were a success due to the contributions of these individuals, as well as hundreds of other volunteers, many of whom included ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ employees and students.

Nancy Walker was the director of administration for the games, responsible for managing the budget and brokering all contracts and legal agreements. Walker is currently the U of L's vice-president (finance and administration), and has extensive community volunteer experience.

As director of facilities, Deb Marek ensured that the sports and activities of the games had a venue. She also supervised all signage, portable facilities and warehousing. At the U of L, Marek is a manager in Sport and Recreation Services, and has been the assistant coach to the women's hockey team.

Cheryl Meheden's responsibilities as director of protocol included managing opening ceremonies, official receptions, hospitality, games attire, medals, participant entertainment and the torch relay. Meheden is currently an instructor at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, in the Faculty of Management, and at Lethbridge College.

Guided by the Alberta Summer Games' mission to provide the best possible experience for all involved, director of sport Jochen Bocksnick ensured that the games offered the best venues and sport chairs. Bocksnick is an instructor in kinesiology and physical education at the U of L.

The 2012 Alberta Summer Games were a huge success, with over 2,600 athletes participating in 15 sports over the four days, watched by over 7,000 spectators. All four of these volunteers committed hundreds of hours to make this success happen, demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment.

Discovery Day for CWSF participants

Canada-Wide Science Fair participants will not just be sitting by their projects this week.

In addition to a host of local and regional tours and activities, faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students and staff from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College have developed a large number of hands-on activities for the students to participate in, and which showcase the diversity of research and creative activities taking place on both campuses.

All events run from 1:30 p.m. to approximately 5 p.m., on Monday, May 13. Events are hands-on, and media friendly.

CWSF participants were able to choose two activities from a total of 25 from departments/faculties including physics, chemistry and biochemistry, biology, geography, Math and Computer Science, New Media, Fine Arts, Kinesiology, Management, Nursing, Modern Languages and Neuroscience.

Discovery Day activities for participants in grades Seven to 9

Francophone Science Sampler – This session will be exclusively in French and include a variety of science activities and tours of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Students will have the opportunity to learn about multiple science disciplines through demonstrations and hands on lessons.

"Performing" Science – Bringing Science to Life: Students will take to the stage to apply their creativity by composing a theatrical version of the various processes and reactions that you would normally see in laboratory.

U of L Art Gallery Science Challenge! – Discover just how much math and science is needed to work in the art field - both as an artist and as someone who works at a gallery.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is excited to welcome the country's top young scientists to campus, May 11 to May 18, as the 52nd annual Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) 2013 comes to Lethbridge.

Approximately 1,100 students, chaperones, judges, sponsors and dignitaries are expected to attend CWSF 2013, an event that will award close to $1 million in cash, prizes and scholarships to the best students.

There are public viewing days scheduled, along with school visits, and many innovative, hands-on activities designed for the science fair participants that have been created and organised by undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members at the U of L, Lethbridge College, and other partner groups throughout the city and region.

Featuring the top 400 science projects by students from Grades 7 to 12 in the country, CWSF 2013 is a showcase of Canada's top young scientific minds.

"As Canada's Research ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of the Year 2012 (undergraduate category), we are uniquely suited to host this event and could not be more excited to open our doors to these bright young scientists," says ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge President, Dr. Mike Mahon.

As the host venue, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge's faculty, staff and students will play a major role in the success of CWSF 2013.

A total of 78 of the Fair's 300-plus judges are U of L faculty and staff members, while more than 150 people from throughout the community are acting as volunteers in helping to create a lifelong memorable experience for the participants and their families.

In addition to the display and judging of projects, CWSF 2013 offers participants exciting opportunities to experience all that the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge and southern Alberta has to offer.

As well, the fair provides local area school children the chance to view and interact with the projects on display as over 2,700 children will visit the U of L through school tours.

Discovery Day, Monday, May 13, is an opportunity for the finalists and delegates attending the CWSF to learn about the exciting multidisciplinary research activities at the U of L.

From 1:30 to 5 p.m., participants will be able to choose two activities from a total of 25 being offered that showcase everything from physics, chemistry and biochemistry to new media, fine arts and neuroscience.

"We're pleased to be able to show off some of the research activities that are taking place here at the U of L every day and in a variety of disciplines," says Mahon. "We expect this will give our guests a real taste of the student experience here at the U of L and what makes this Alberta's Destination ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ."

Throughout the week, the general public is encouraged to view the projects on display in the 1st Choice Savings Centre Gymnasium. Public viewing times are available Sunday, Monday, Thursday and Friday and are listed below.
