Scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 11 in the parking lot of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (2410 28 Street S), the group aims to attract 12 local businesses or teams to participate in the 4-on-4 street hockey event.

“Each year the IME program takes on a fundraising project as part of its curriculum,” says Karly Hesch, the vice-president external of IME. “The program is built on a foundation of community, theory and practice and more than anything, it teaches that students have the ability to affect positive change in the world.”

Since the program began in 2000, more than $150,000 have been raised towards community development through student-initiated community projects.

The group settled on a street hockey tourney as its fundraising vehicle this year, and plans to raise money through the $500 entry fee, various levels of sponsorship packages and community donations.

The event itself is relatively simple. The group is looking for 12 teams consisting of a minimum of six players per entry. Games are played in a 4-on-4 format (three players, one goalie) and last for 20 minutes, running time. A round robin elimination style bracket will guarantee teams a minimum of three games each, with friendly competition the overriding theme.

“We want this day to be about community and bringing people together to support a very worthy cause and have some fun doing so,” says Hesch. “One of the wrinkles we’ve introduced to the tourney is that once a game is over, the losing team has an opportunity to buy a tie result by donating $50 for every goal they are behind, forcing a sudden death overtime period. Likewise, if the winning team doesn’t want to play overtime, they can buy back the win by matching the losing team’s donation.”

Hesch adds that the entire day will have a festival atmosphere with the Flyin’ Hawaiian Food Truck on site and an ongoing silent auction.

Tournament rules and regulations, as well as sponsorship packages and entry forms can be acquired by contacting organizers at imehockey2015@gmail.com.

Related Topics

Organization:

YMCA

Person:

Karly Hesch

SportsGame:

hockey

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 20:04:38 +0000 trevor.kenney 7048 at /unews New book featuring local hockey stories to benefit KidSport /unews/article/new-book-featuring-local-hockey-stories-benefit-kidsport

From the dedicated moms and dads who climb out of their warm beds in the wintry dawn to get their child to the hockey rink, to the players who can remember their first goal like it happened a day ago, Dr. Gordon Hunter, a 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge Faculty of Management professor, wanted to give a voice to people’s everyday experiences with hockey in his new book.

Dr. Gordon Hunter has collected local hockey stories for his new book.

“There are books about Gordie Howe and Ron MacLean and Ken Dryden and those are good books, but there aren’t any books about normal folks and their experience with hockey when they’re growing up,” says Hunter, who’s already the author of four academic books. “When I told my younger son Robb he said ‘Finally, a book that someone will read.’”

He started collecting stories from people with a southern Alberta connection and compiled them into a book titled after one of his favourite sayings: The Older I Get the Better I Was.

“There are stories about guys who didn’t go very far in hockey, there are stories about some of the guys who played in the NHL or played professional in Europe and they are businessmen, lawyers and doctors here in Lethbridge,” he says.

The 40-chapter book includes contributions from Lethbridge Mayor Chris Spearman, who tells the story of going to the Montreal Forum to watch the Montreal Canadiens play, and Steve Craig, a colleague, who vividly recalls the phone call he got at age 15 inviting him to play on a AA team.

“I was playing on a Midget B team when I got a call from a Double-A team. Several women also contributed chapters, including Cheryl Neufeld, commissioner of Coaldale REC hockey, Brook Paisley, goalie for the Pronghorns women’s hockey team, and the first chapter recounts experiences from local hockey moms.

Hunter’s own experiences with hockey have formed a thread that has run throughout his life. with unique backgrounds.

Joining the ‘Horns is a trio of forwards, including one each from the United States, Belarus and Canada. Head coach Spiros Anastas introduced Sam Wilbur, Artyom Kalashnikov and Aaron Enns, bringing his inaugural recruiting class to nine fresh faces this season.

Wilbur, a Michigan native, comes to Lethbridge after finishing his junior career with the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL). In 56 games last season, Wilbur finished second in NOJHL scoring with 36 goals and 50 assists. He added another 15 points in 14 playoff games to help lead the Miners to a NOJHL Championship.

The six-foot-two inch right winger also spent two seasons with the Blind River Beavers and accumulated 144 points in 108 career NOJHL games.

“We are fortunate to be adding Sam this late in the recruiting process as he garnered a lot of attention from NCAA institutions this season,” says Anastas. “Sam is a big body forward who protects the puck well, and he has a knack for scoring at every level that he has played. I am confident that his game will transition well into the CIS.”

Originally from Minsk, Belarus, Kalashnikov comes to the program after a successful 20-year-old season with the Virden Oil Capitals in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Kalashnikov finished second on the Oil Capitals in scoring last season with 52 points in 55 games. He added another 12 points in 10 playoff games.

Kalashnikov, who moved to Canada with his family when he was 15, has also played with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, Brooks Bandits and Nipawin Hawks. During the 2012-13 season he represented Belarus at the World Junior Championship (Division 1) and registered two points in four games.

“Arty comes highly recommended from many coaches in the Tier II loop,” says Anastas. “He is a crafty forward who can play both centre and wing. He has played at the international level, and is a fierce competitor; he brings some much needed depth up front with the ability to make a lot of plays.”

Enns is transfering to the 免费福利资源在线看片 of Lethbridge and will have three years of eligibility left after spending a season each with the Simon Fraser Clan in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League and Manhattanville College in NCAA III.

With the Clan last season, Enns recorded 32 points in 22 games. He suited up for 11 games the year before with Manhattanville. Prior to joining Manhattanville, Enns played three seasons with the La Ronge Ice Wolves, winning two Saskatchewan Junior Hockey Championships and making an appearance in the Royal Bank Cup in 2010. He was also the Ice Wolves captain during his last season with the team.

“Aaron came to camp committed and determined to make the team as a walk-on, and he impressed our staff immediately,” says Anastas. “With two years of collegiate experience under his belt, including a year in the NCAA, he will add character and hard-nosed play to our forward unit, really adding to our depth up front."

The ‘Horns will face their first non-conference action this weekend by hosting Portage College of the ACAC.
