Taal sets sights on Germany

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns women's basketball guard Lauren Taal is taking her game to the pro ranks after signing a contract to play with KuSG Leimen in Germany this fall.

The club is based in the town of Leimen, which is in the southwestern part of Germany and plays in the DBBL second division. Leimen is also the hometown of former World number one tennis player Boris Becker.

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to continue my playing career overseas," says Taal. "It is something that I have worked towards for a long time and I am looking forward to getting over there and helping my team to be successful in any way I can."

Taal finished her career among the school leaders in many statistical categories. She leaves the program as second on the all-time scoring list with 1029 points, second in assists with 312 and the school record holder in steals with 192. She is also the school record holder for points in a single game with 34, which she set January 17, 2010 in Brandon versus the Bobcats.

This past season, the LCI grad led the conference in steals with 66 and the 'Horns in scoring and assists, averaging 12.4 points and 4.6 assists per game. She also set a Canada West single game record in steals with 13 versus the Manitoba Bisons on January 28^th.

"My time as a Pronghorn has been instrumental in my development as a person, athlete, and student of the game," says Taal, who graduated from the program this past spring. "I am very grateful to my coaches, teammates, and family as well as other members of the community who have supported me throughout my five years here."

Taal will head to Germany in August to begin her pro career.

Beattie, Spear Chief-Morris earn honours

Ashley Beattie and Julian Spear Chief-Morris helped their respective teams to key victories over the weekend, strengthening their bids for Canada West playoff spots and subsequently earning recognition as Subway Pronghorn Athletes of the Week.

Locked in a dog-fight for a playoff position, 'Horns captain Beattie led the 'Horns to a three-point weekend versus the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Alberta Pandas. Prior to this season the 'Horns had never beaten the Pandas, but won the season series with the Pandas this year with a 3-0-1 record.

Friday night, Beattie assisted on the tying goal with just under two-minutes remaining to force overtime, a game in which the 'Horns won 3-2 in a shootout.

In the series finale, Beattie scored the 'Horns lone marker in a 2-1 shootout loss. With the three points, the 'Horns remain one point ahead of the Manitoba Bisons for the final playoff spot and will visit the Bisons this weekend.

Julian Spear Chief-Morris

After missing nearly the entire 2010-11 season, Lethbridge product Julian Spear Chief-Morris had his best weekend of the season in helping the 'Horns earn a weekend sweep over southern Alberta rivals ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary Dinos. It was also the first time the 'Horns had swept the Dinos in 12 years.

Friday night, Spear Chief-Morris sparked the team out the gate, hitting four first half three pointers, en route to 19 points and a 90-80 'Horns' victory. On the night, he was 6-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc, while also grabbing seven rebounds.

Saturday night, Spear Chief-Morris scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter to help seal the weekend sweep with a tight 80-72 victory. He also recorded four rebounds and two steals.

Steacy dominates at Golden Bear Classic

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns thrower Heather Steacy is back on the indoor throwing circuit and she's quickly making up for lost time.

After taking a season off to focus on the outdoor version of her event, Steacy kicked off the 2011 indoor track season in style at the Golden Bear Classic in Edmonton.

On her sixth and final throw, the Fine Arts student registered a phenomenal throw of 19.24 metres to win the weight throw event by nearly two metres. She became only the third woman to eclipse the 19-metre mark in CIS history and shattered her previous personal best of 17.97 metres, set in 2009.

Steacy narrowly missed the CIS record of 19.66 metres set by former Pronghorns athlete, Kate Forbes, at the 2005 CIS Championships in Winnipeg, Man.

Steacy's outstanding effort earned her Pronghorns Female Athlete of the Week honours.

On the men's side, fourth-year defenseman Curtis Cooper was a pillar of strength on the Horns' blueline last weekend, despite the Horns dropping both games in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Bisons.

Cooper was the lone Pronghorn to finish the weekend with a plus rating over the two games and assisted on the Horns' only goal Friday night. He also registered two shots on goal as he was named Pronghorns Male Athlete of the Week.

Horns host Dinos in men's hockey

While it is only early January, the Pronghorns men's hockey team faces a crucial home-and-home series this weekend as it looks to move up the standings and challenge for a Canada West playoff position.

The Pronghorns (5-10-3) are still on the outside looking in on the playoff picture. The Horns currently trail the Saskatchewan Huskies by six points for the final spot and this weekend's opponent, the Calgary Dinos, by eight points for third place.

While the Horns only earned a weekend split versus the second place Manitoba Bisons last weekend, they played arguably their most complete game of the season in a 1-0 loss Friday night, outshooting the Bisons 44-20. The next night they skated to a 6-4 victory and gained ground on the idle Huskies for fourth place.

The Dinos opened the second semester versus the CIS second ranked Alberta Golden Bears, losing both games but earning a single point after falling in overtime on Saturday night.

The Horns and Dinos have played each other tough this season. The series in the first semester was split, with each game going to a shootout and the home team coming out on top.

Friday night's 7 p.m. matchup at Nicholas Sheran Arena is the lone home action for Pronghorn Athletics this weekend. The teams then head back to Calgary Saturday for the conclusion of the weekend series.

Meanwhile, the men's and women's basketball teams head to Brandon to try and improve their playoff chances. The women's squad (6-5) is tied with two other schools for the final Canada West playoff spot and faces a 1-11 Brandon club. The Pronghorns men's team (5-6) is coming off a tough overtime loss to nationally ranked ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary. They'll face a 5-7 Bobcats team as they look to maintain a hold on third place in the Canada West standings.
