Young opera professionals gain invaluable experience in Italy

Ninety minutes from Rome, deep within Italy’s mountainous Abruzzo region, lies the small Medieval town of Sulmona. In addition to being the birthplace of the poet Ovid, it’s home to the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy, or COSI.

Kennedy Greene, Kjel Erickson and Alyssa Durnie had the experience of a lifetime at the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy.

In summer 2014, two ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge students and one recent graduate journeyed to Sulmona to participate in COSI’s performance and internship programs. They’re among nearly 400 emerging artists and opera professionals who have studied there since the institute opened its doors in 2007.

Very few singers from Western Canada were admitted to the Centre, which requires applicants to audition for their programs. The U of L students earned their positions by singing up to three prepared arias in Italian in November 2013, when Artistic Director Darryl Edwards visited the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

Alyssa Durnie, a bachelor of music student, joined the Opera Studio program to study concert repertoire and sing in the chorus of Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea. She recalls her first encounter with her cohort at Fiumicino Airport, where she met them after spending a few days in Rome.

“I was very anxious to meet everyone and hear the different voices within the group,” she says. “When we were able to start mingling, I felt immediate support from my colleagues. It calmed my nerves right away and I got excited about the weeks to come.”

COSI’s immersive summer programs, which ran from June 22 to July 21, are designed to hone participants’ skills in Italian, performance and production management. In addition to providing classes and coaching, the Canadian-run centre gives its participants a wide range of performance opportunities, including outdoor concerts and full-scale operas.

Kjel Erickson, a student in the U of L’s BFA Multidisciplinary program, was invited into the Opera Ensemble to play the role of Marcello, the painter, in Puccini’s La Bohème. In between rehearsals he received coaching and lessons to help him polish his technique and his repertoire.

Both Erickson and Durnie also sang in COSI’s evening concerts, which featured the work of Puccini and Donizetti.

“It was amazing to be in a country where the music I was learning to perform had been a pillar of their cultural identity for centuries,” says Erickson. “It would be hard to come away with a greater appreciation of the art form and its importance.”

Behind the scenes, Kennedy Greene and her fellow stage management interns, or SMIs, enabled the rehearsals and productions to run smoothly. A recent graduate of U of L’s BFA Dramatic Arts program, Greene gained the hands-on experience she needed to complete her final Stage Management Apprenticeship Credit with the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association.

As an SMI, Greene assisted at rehearsals, including set-up and clean-up. In addition to these duties – and attending to things like costume fittings and props finishing – she and her colleagues were responsible for stage managing the evening concerts.

“We would have 15- to 45-minute breaks between some of our activities, but for the most part SMIs go all day,” says Greene.

In the mornings, she, Erickson and Durnie all took Italian language and Pilates classes. (The exercises helped the opera students to sing through the more challenging poses on stage, while SMIs used the time to balance out their rigorous days.) After that, they would perform their separate tasks.

For Durnie, it was actually dinnertime that presented the greatest culture shock.

“Most restaurants [didn’t] even open for dinner until about 8 p.m.,” she says. “So we were often out quite late to eat.”

However, she adds, the meal always ended with gelato and she adjusted fairly quickly.

Over the course of these busy weeks, the three participants gained experiences that promise to serve them in the years ahead. In addition to making contacts across Canada and Europe, Durnie developed a greater understanding of Italian culture and the rehearsal process in that country.

“Italian time is much different than Canadian time!” she says. “You have to keep an open mind and stay flexible.”

Greene says that she learned a lot from working overseas, and formed close relationships with her colleagues in the process.

“I think the program helped me make some very wonderful connections. I also think it helped my confidence, which will only benefit me professionally.”

“I made many new friends who are on, or have taken, the same road as I’m taking,” says Erickson. “Drawing on their advice, and experiencing things with them, is invaluable for my professional development.

“I now have a broader knowledge base and world-view to draw from that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.”

Erickson and Durnie will share the stage with lead roles at the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra and U of L Opera Workshop co-performance of Dido & Aeneas, Jan. 16 & 17 at 8 p.m. at Southminster United Church. Tickets are available online.

Staples featured in Music at Noon

The weekly ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Music at Noon series features a performance by Dr. Thomas Staples, Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 12:15 p.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Recital Hall.

Staples is a professor of music and the Director of Bands at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. In addition to his regular performance as a horn soloist at the U of L, he has been soloist with several bands and orchestras in Western Canada, most recently as horn soloist with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, and at The Call of the Wild Horn Festival.

A keen advocate of music for brass ensembles, Staples has a lengthy background with brass groups such as The U of L Faculty Brass, The Commonwealth Brass, The New West Brass, The Southern Alberta Brass and The Bridge Brass. He has been principal horn with the Lethbridge Symphony for over two decades.

Now in his 24th year at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, Staples is in his 13th year as Director of Bands, conducting the Wind Orchestra, the Chamber Band and Brass and Woodwind Choirs. Groups under his baton have received high praise for expressive and stimulating performances. The Wind Orchestra and Chamber Band have travelled throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C and Washington State in recent years. Staples is in regular demand as an adjudicator and clinician throughout the area, and holds degrees from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Saskatchewan, James Madison ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Iowa.

Hendsbee embodies spirit

It didn't take long for Blaine Hendsbee to see something special in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge. Similarly, when the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ was looking to introduce operatic performance to its undergraduate student body, Hendsbee was a particularly perfect fit for the role.

"When I first came to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ I was primarily an opera singer and I had a small private voice studio in New York City," says Hendsbee. "The job was looking for someone who had a strong interest in operatic voice performance and someone who was eager to develop an undergraduate voice operatic workshop."

Faculty of Fine Arts faculty member Blaine Hendsbee is a wonderful example of how the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and its faculty have matured over the past 45 years.

Hendsbee was that eager body, having gained an appreciation for the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and the Faculty of Fine Arts from a guest performance he'd made previously.

"I was giving a solo recital in Lethbridge about 12 years ago and I was immediately struck by the spirit and energy of both the students and faculty, as well as the incredible facilities," he says.

Hendsbee is a wonderful example of how the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and its faculty have grown over the past 45 years, with instructors that push research boundaries, are active in their field of study and who put great value in the undergraduate student experience.

"Working at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge has enabled me to combine all facets of what I love about singing and performing and teaching, all in one wonderful package," says Hendsbee. "I am able to still perform as an operatic solo performer as well as share that gift and love of operatic singing with a wonderful new generation of singers at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ."

In fact, it was that particular aspect of his position, creating a new operatic culture on campus, which peaked his interest in the job.

"That I could bring forward my professional experiences in operatic performance to help open doors and opportunities for young singers who wanted to explore the genre was very appealing," he says.

He has helped nurture the artistic scene throughout southern Alberta and is thrilled to bring a new initiative to Lethbridge audiences this spring with Mozart's The Magic Flute.

"It's an exciting new collaboration with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro Glenn Klassen," says Hendsbee of the Feb. 3-4 performances. "It's an incredible opportunity and exciting new venture for both the symphony and the U of L Opera Workshop as we'll be bringing this partnership to the wider community of Lethbridge to enjoy."

Hendsbee's active research centres on solo creative performance with a focus on English language repertoire. On Saturday, Jan. 14, he headlines the Faculty Artists and Friends Series when he presents Blaine Hendsbee & Friends at 8 p.m. in the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Recital Hall.

Ask him what his most memorable moment at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ is and it has nothing to do with his own performances, but rather the growth of his students.

"I remember sitting at a performance of The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, and it was the final curtain call," he says. "The students were all coming out to take their bows before a wonderfully appreciative audience, and to see the radiant joy on their faces as they accepted this show of gratitude from the audience was wonderful. This was a culmination of so many hours of work, and to see how happy they were from that experience was something I'll always remember."

Sing along with Vox Musica

Experience the glory of Handel's Messiah and sing along with the Vox Musica Choir, conducted by Glenn Klassen, on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Augustine's Church.

Vox Musica encourages all fellow community vocalists and the audience to sing together in an evening of fun, light-hearted entertainment.

"This is a first for Vox Musica," says Carolyn Speakman, president, Vox Musica Choral Society. "The Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra performs Handel's Messiah every other year, and with this being an off-year for the symphony, we decided to present the Messiah in a different way.

"Sing-Along Messiah is aimed at singers who want to sing the Messiah, but don't have the time or long-term commitment to rehearse. People have two choices for getting involved. They can register to sing on stage with Vox Musica during the evening performance or can sing-along sitting in the audience."

Talented local vocalists perform the solo sections of the Messiah, with Alan Young serving as the accompanist for the evening.

For those who want to join the choir for the event, they can register online at voxmusica.shawwebspace.ca and attend the one rehearsal on Dec. 11 from 2 to 5 p.m. A $10 registration fee, which can be paid at the rehearsal, helps cover expenses and fund future choral events in Lethbridge.

"We are only performing the Christmas portion and Halleluiah Chorus," says Speakman. "While hardly a polished performance, we do promise it will be a lot of fun."

U of L celebrates Fall 2011 Convocation

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Fall 2011 Convocation ceremony takes place Saturday, Oct. 15 in the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness, beginning at 10 a.m.

Among the honoured guests at this ceremony are the 358 graduands eligible to convocate, along with Honorary Degree recipients George Gemer and Dr. John Kloppenburg and Alumnus of the Year Michael Miltenberger. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Following are brief biographies of our special honourees.

Dr. George Gemer, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa

A well-known Lethbridge track and field and fencing coach, Gemer is also an author and survivor of Second World War prisoner of war camps who fled Hungary for Canada in 1956. Gemer has coached and officiated at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and other world-class sporting events while retaining close ties to the Hungarian community in Lethbridge and beyond.

Dr. John Kloppenborg, Doctor of Arts, honoris causa

A ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge graduate (BA '74), he is a professor and Chair at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Toronto's Department and Centre for the Study of Religion. Kloppenborg is well-known as a researcher of the origins and sources of early Christian texts such as the Q document, a lost book of the New Testament.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARDS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR HONOUR

Michael Miltenberger, (BA '75) Alumnus of the Year

J. Michael Miltenberger is the MLA for Thebacha, NWT, Deputy Premier and environmental advocate. He has been described as a northern visionary and a protector of northern values. His clear and thought-provoking approach has significantly impacted a variety of projects in areas ranging from health services to wildlife and endangered species.

First MMus graduate -- Acacia Doktorchik (BMus '09 distinction, MMus '11)

The U of L will also welcome the first graduate of a Master of Music program. Acacia Doktorchik has performed as a soprano soloist in Handel's Messiah and Bach's Magnificat with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, as well as being an accomplished pianist, cellist, and Celtic and Highland Dancer. She is currently teaching in Medicine Hat, Alta.

Trailblazing master's graduate has music in her soul

Growing up in rural Alberta, opera singer Acacia Doktorchik (BMus '09 distinction, MMus '11), always sang to the tune of a different song.

While most of her friends dedicated their time to stickhandling at the hockey rink or roping calves and barrel racing in the rodeo arena, Doktorchik spent countless hours perfecting her skills on the piano and developing her singing voice. Her passion for music, which led her to become the first student to graduate with a Master of Music from the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge, is soul-deep.

"I grew up in a very musical home, but when I thought about going into medicine after high school, I couldn't imagine music not being a part of my life," says Doktorchik, who hails from Drumheller. "My mom suggested that if I went into medicine, I could always teach voice or piano on the side if I wanted to. I thought about that for a few days, and it was just so depressing. I knew then that music would have to play a much bigger role in my life."

Acacia Doktorchik is the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's first Master of Music graduate.

With the support of her parents and the encouragement of her voice teacher, Calgary Opera singer Shelley Fullerton, Doktorchik enrolled in a Bachelor of Music program in vocal performance at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge in 2005. She took full advantage of the musical opportunities at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for both her piano and vocal skills.

"I thought about doing a double major in voice and piano, but with the performance criteria I just didn't have time. I didn't want to lose my piano skills, however, so I played for a lot of auditions the first couple of years. Although I wasn't really much of a choir person, I started singing in Vox Musica during my first year. It was so fun and so rewarding; it really changed my view of choir," recalls Doktorchik, who later joined the Women's Chorus and U of L Singers.

"In my second year I became a member of the U of L Opera Workshop with Dr. Blaine Hendsbee. It was my first experience performing in an opera. It was fantastic and I became really interested in opera. It is so dramatic and challenging and filled with emotion. It is so real in the most human way. I want to continue singing and performing it as long as I can."

Before her graduation in 2009, Hendsbee approached Doktorchik and told her about the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's new Master of Music program, suggesting she apply.

"I was going to take a year off after my undergrad and I am so glad I didn't. I was the only person in the program that first year and the faculty were still working out exactly how it would run. They told me that they wanted me to write a thesis and I thought it was a fantastic idea. The U of L program has such a great balance between ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ and performance, whereas most of the other programs I have heard about seem to focus on only one or the other," says Doktorchik. "Although it was busy and stressful at times, I was able to do so much and gained so much experience. I wrote my first thesis and had at least another 20- or 30-page paper due each semester. I performed in two operas and assisted with a third, had diction classes and language classes and was given the opportunity to teach and to conduct a choir. Being the first student to graduate from the program feels really wonderful. I was so lucky to work with such high calibre musicians and faculty and it is very rewarding to know that I had a part in shaping this program."

Throughout her master's studies, Doktorchik taught voice and piano through both the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's and Medicine Hat College's Conservatories of Music. After completing her master's requirements this fall, she moved to Medicine Hat and began teaching voice, piano and theory full-time for the conservatory. Doktorchik returns to Lethbridge Oct. 15 to convocate at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ for the second time.

"I have been given the opportunity to sing Oh Canada at previous U of L convocations, but this year they have asked me to read the invocation. Looking at it now, I realize how important these words are. The invocation says everything I want to say," says Doktorchik. "I am truly grateful for the faculty and for my parents, friends and family that have supported me on my journey."

· Doktorchik has performed in five operas, including lead roles in Menotti's The Telephone (Lucy), Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites (Constance) and Von Suppe's Ten Belles With No Ring (Sidonia).

· She performed as a soprano soloist in Handel's Messiah and Bach's Magnificat with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra.

· She is also an accomplished pianist, cellist, and Celtic and Highland Dancer.

· She has trained with the Cowtown Opera Summer Academy and the Southern Alberta Vocal Academy.

· Among her opportunities to sing Oh Canada, she has opened Lethbridge Bulls games.

Dr. Brian Black (Music), Dr. Edward Jurkowski (Music) and Dr. Emily Luce (New Media) all received internal Social Sciences Humanities Research Council grants valued at $4,500 each.

U of L alumnus Christian Darbyshire (BMgt '99) was named one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40™. As a partner with tinePublic Inc., Darbyshire has been instrumental in securing names such as Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Lance Armstrong and Arnold Schwarzenegger for educational speaking engagements in Canada. It is the second consecutive year that the U of L has had someone recognized by the Globe and Mail's Top 40 Under 40™ program. Dr. Olga Kovalchuk was honoured last year.

Joshua Seerattan, a U of L student from the Faculty of Management, and Courtney Lockhart from the Faculty of Arts and Science, have been awarded a $5,500 USD grant from Alberta Advanced Education and Technology for their participation in The Washington Centre – Alberta Internship Program for summer 2011. Both students will spend six weeks in Washington, D.C. Seerattan will be participating in the Global Trade and Regional Integration program, while Lockhart will take part in the International Affairs program.

Dagmar Dahle's (Art) work is included in the exhibition ANIMAL, at Museum London in Ontario.

Laura Lavigne (BA '06), the co-ordinator, International Programs & Exchange, in the International Centre for Students was awarded a full scholarship ($3,000) to participate in the International Educators Training Program this summer at Queen's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

Denton Fredrickson (Art) has made the long list for the 2011 Sobey Art Award, Canada's pre-eminent prize for contemporary Canadian art. Following a three-month nomination process, the Curatorial Panel announced the 25 artists vying for this year's award.

Music major Matt Groenheide (percussionist) won the Young Artist Competition presented by the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra. In addition to a cash prize, he receives a guest solo spot with the LSO during their 2011-2012 Masters Series.

Marg McKeen (Office of Research and Innovation Services) is retiring this summer after 33 years of service to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ. She began her career at the U of L as an Academic Secretary in the Department of Sociology and was hired by the Office of Research Services in 1986. Since that time, she has served in a number of roles and worked with numerous faculty members and students. A retirement reception will be held on Wednesday, June 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Markin Hall Atrium. Dr. David Renter (music) Trio performed at Southern Alberta Art Gallery on Dec. 3 as part of the second event organized by the brand new Lethbridge Jazz Society.

Dr. Goldie Morgentaler (English) was featured in the Fall 2010 issue of Pakn Treger magazine, the magazine of the Yiddish Book Center. Published in Amherst, Mass., the Pakn Treger story details Morgentaler's teaching of Yiddish literature in what is referred to as the "Canadian Bible Belt".

Lisa Doolittle (Theatre & Dramatic Arts) was a plenary speaker with ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Calgary professor Anne Flynn and U of L alumnus Troy Emery Twigg (BFA '03) at the American Society for Theatre Research and Congress on Research in Dance international joint conference in Seattle in November. They presented the paper, Performing Negotiations: Blackfoot Dance in Colonial and Multicultural Canada. Doolittle also presented, Dance Research on the Move: Connecting across the academy and engaging with community, to graduate and PhD students at York ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ.

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Senate member, Paul Gale Pharo, was appointed to the Alberta Provincial Court Bench. Pharo is also the incoming president of the Rotary Club of Lethbridge and has three children attending the U of L.

Taras Polataiko (Art) recently exhibited his new work at the 5th International Biennale of Video Art in Israel.

Leanne Elias (New Media) recently had a chapter published in the book, Mobile Learning: Pilot Projects and Initiatives. The chapter is, Using Smartphone Technology to Extend the Educational Experience.

Nick Wade (Art) spoke at the Alberta Public Planners Institute in Lethbridge on the subject of art in the public realm.

Emily Luce's (New Media) exhibition, Parallel Park (Lab Space), is showing in the Helen Christou Gallery until Jan. 14, 2011.

Dr. Josie Mills (U of L Art Gallery director/curator) presented, Deaccessioning: The Root of All Scandal, as part of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery's, Articulations: Art Appreciation Lecture Series, in November.

Matthew Blackburn (BMus '09), winner of the 2009 Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition, performed with Musaeus String Quartet as part of the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra's Chamber Series.

Mary Dyck (Kinesiology and Physical Education) and Ard Biesheuvel (BEd '90, MEd '98) authored a book, Coaching Volleyball Champions: Principles and Practices of Successful Coaches. Each chapter in the book includes a biography of one of North America's outstanding volleyball coaches, followed by an in-depth interview and the coach's five favorite drills. Dyck also co-authored, Everybody Move: A multimedia package for daily physical activity, published by Human Kinetics in November 2009.

Denton Fredrickson (Art) and Catherine Ross (Art Technician) have been awarded the Public Art commission for the Southern Alberta Art Gallery. Applications were received from around the world and the selection committee consisted of representatives from the Allied Arts Council and the SAAG, a community member, an artist and a technical expert. Ross and Fredrickson proposed to create a giant stringed instrument responsive to the day-to-day wind and light levels in Lethbridge. Visually, the installation reflects a flock of birds both at rest and in flight, appearing to move seamlessly from exterior to interior. The work should be installed by fall 2011.

Dr. Shelley Scott (Theatre & Dramatic Arts) has been elected by acclamation to a second two-year term as the president of the Canadian Association for Theatre Research (CATR).

Merle Fuller (MEd) has been accepted into the PhD in Management program at Sobey School of Business, St. Mary's ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ, Halifax, N.S. Fuller's project, Living with a cop: A handbook for Police Officers and their Families (a training handbook for police officers addressing work/family issues) was a significant factor in his being accepted into the IO/Pscyh PhD stream of this excellent PhD program.

Dr. Ed Jurkowski (Music) was recently elected to a three-year term as English editor for the journal Intersections, the peer-review bilingual publication of the Canadian ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Music Society.

Bente Hansen (Music), Dale Ketcheson (Music), Nicole Higginson (BFA/BEd) and Jesse Plessis (music major) all performed at For the Love of Music: For the Love of Medicine concert to raise funds for a medical mission to El Salvador being undertaken by U of L pre-medical students.

Katherine Taylor (Psychology) is one of 12 winners of a 2010 NEADS Equity Through Education Student Award. Taylor was selected out of a field of 375 total applicants. Equity Through Education is a charitable initiative launched by BMO Capital Markets in 2005 to help people realize their educational ambitions by giving them the means to pursue those goals.

Ed Wasiak (Music Education) has been appointed to the Editorial Committee of the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education (JHRME). Taking over the Canadian seat, Wasiak joins a body of 16 international scholars on the JHRME Committee.

Don Gill's (Art) exhibition Erratic Spaces/THE LAND is at THE LAND/Gallery in Albuquerque, N.M. from June 5 to 26. The exhibition is an installation based on Gill's February 2010 residency at THE LAND/an art site. www.landartsite.org/exhibitions/index.html

Nick Sullivan (Music) performed as a soloist with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra during its season finale.

Catherine Ross (Art) has an exhibition of Stella Mere at the Glenbow Museum, Aug. 2. Stella Mere is a spectacular installation made up of 750 shimmering starfish, each individually cast in aluminum and mounted on thin threaded steel rods. Stella Mere took three years and the help of more than 20 people to complete.
