Installation creating a stir in 1st Choice Savings Centre

What is red, black, white and causing a stir? It's the new art installation in the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Health and Wellness.

Entitled Seek Knowledge Even Onto China by London, Ont. artist Jamelie Hassan, the work is a recent acquisition by the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Art Gallery. It was purchased with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts Acquisition Assistance program, Sam Hassan and an anonymous donor.

"Seek Knowledge Even Onto China is a deceptively simple work that consists of carrying out the artist's precise instructions for installation," explains
Dr. Josephine Mills, Director/Curator U of L Art Gallery.

"Those include painting the wall a specific shade of red and attaching the black and white vinyl lettering, which are scaled to fit the location and repeats the title of the work in Arabic and Chinese characters."

The Hassan work Seek Knowledge Even Onto China as it is being installed.

Seek Knowledge Even Onto China can be displayed either inside a gallery, as it was last year at the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge as part of a touring exhibition surveying Hassan's career, or in a public location as it is now. The work is a limited edition and thus, despite the technical ease to reproduce it, there is a limit on the number of works that can exist.

Internationally renowned, with an extensive exhibition history, Hassan's practice has been distinguished by her use of a wide range of media – ceramics, watercolours, bookworks, photographs, video and installations – from which she selects an approach appropriate to the task at hand.

"Her work is well suited for public art because of her use of text that connects with memory and identity and her interest in exploring cross-cultural exchange and communication," says Mills. "While travel has a significant influence on Hassan's creative output, equally important to her practice is her view on the world from her home in London. Her pioneering practice has steadfastly asserted that artists have a responsibility to address the critical issues of our time while her geographical location in southwestern Ontario grounds her practice."

Despite the influence of her home, Hassan's work is equally influenced by other places: her research and travels in Asia, the Americas, the Middle East and particularly in Lebanon, the homeland of her parents.

This installation is part of a new direction when it comes to public art on the
U of L campus.

"I'm interested in expanding the range of what we have for public art on campus," says Mills. "It can be installations like this work, or other options beyond sculpture or framed works."

Open House Sessions Monday, Oct. 17 in 1st Choice Savings Centre

It's going to be easier for returning students to gain a coveted space in residence in the near future.

Plans are being finalized for a new residence complex to be built in Aperture Park, south of Piikani House and Tsuu'tina House, and across from the Residence Village and Paterson Centre.

Construction on the 11,589 sq.m. (124,743 sq. ft.) building is expected to begin shortly and be complete by summer 2013.

Several drawings are included here for feedback. As well, a pair of Open House sessions will be held on Monday, Oct. 17 in the lobby of the 1st Choice Savings Centre. From 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 6:30 to 8 p.m., architect renderings can be viewed with architects on hand to answer questions.

The Housing office encourages people to view the plans and offer feedback comments by e-mail to housing@uleth.ca.

The facility will feature 259 beds in four and two-bedroom configurations. All spaces will have kitchens and double beds.

Several studio rooms are being designed for long term guests and visiting lecturers, there are several accessible suites, and a massive amount of social and study space on site.

A room function list is included, below.

"We identified second and third-year returning students as a priority for this building," says Terri Thomas, manager of Housing Services. "We also designed a large number of features into the building that we hope will encourage student interaction and connections. Our residences have always had a long wait list, and this should also help with that challenge."

Thomas adds that with nine study lounges for support of academic pursuits, a games room, exercise centre and a multi-purpose room for club meetings and other activities, the space should see plenty of use.

The L-shaped building is centred around a quad-style green space, near a large park and lake. It is also directly across a lane from the indoor and outdoor amenities in the Paterson Centre, that include beach volleyball, basketball courts and other recreational activities.

The new facility, in conjunction with the current renovation projects underway, will increase the number of available rooms on campus by more than 60 per cent, from 589 to 947 single beds.

In addition, campus housing has 31 units in Siksika House dedicated to family housing.

BUILDING HIGHLIGHTS

- Five-storey residence complex (four levels on the east wing, five levels on the north wing)

- The two wings of the building are only connected on the main floor

- 259 double beds

- Four-bedroom suite design with two full washrooms, full
kitchen and common area in each unit (50 units)

- Two-bedroom suites with one full washroom, full kitchen
and common area

- Two-bedroom accessibility units on the main floor

- Fifth storey studio units

- Nine study lounges

- Building lounge

- Games room

- A large multi-use project room with the capability of dividing the spacing into three small study spaces

- Exercise room

- On-site laundry facilities

- Outdoor green spaces

- New office space for Residence Life and Conference Services

Parking Lot Redevelopment and Quad design information session, Apr. 27-29

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge is embarking on two major projects this summer, both of which will enhance the campus environmentally and aesthetically.

The Parking Lot Redevelopment project features the introduction of landscaping features, such as bioswales and windbreaks, to lots on the western side of campus, namely those near Anderson Hall and the 1st Choice Savings Centre. The redevelopment will address traffic flow, pedestrian flow and storm water management issues. One of the driving forces behind this initiative is to improve the area's storm water management techniques to prevent further occurrences of the July 1, 2008 flooding episode at 1st Choice Savings Centre.

A number of options have been created for how to redevelop the area and the public is encouraged to leave its feedback on what options would best suit the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's needs. Currently, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's Facebook Fan Page has links to renderings of the redevelopment options. Click here for more about this project.

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Quad project is the creation of a public greenspace north of the new Markin Hall building and east of Anderson Hall. This area will be developed into one of the most visible expressions of what the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community is to students, staff and campus visitors, featuring a park, sculptures, public benches and other amenities. Follow this link for a backgrounder on the project and its goals, as well as links to renderings of various concepts of design.

Everyone is invited to leave feedback on the options presented. As well, the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ will host a public information session, Apr. 27-29, on the second level of the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
