"Susan has done an excellent job of putting the Prentice Institute on a trajectory that will make it a world-recognized centre. She has attracted a significant number of researchers to the Institute as research associates, which in turn has built up our graduate student component. With this new funding, Dr. McDaniel and her colleagues will be able to significantly expand on the Prentice Institute's mandate to look into population issues worldwide."</p><p><div class="image-caption-container" style="width:500px;"><img src="/unews/sites/default/files/main/articles/mcdaniel.jpg" alt="Dr. Susan McDaniel" title="Dr. Susan McDaniel is the director of the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy."><div class="image-caption">Dr. Susan McDaniel is the director of the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy.</div></div></p><p>There are three areas McDaniel – and her expanding group of researchers – is examining through what she describes as life-course research. These include comparisons between Canadian and other population groups, initially in the United States; the government-supported policy steps countries such as Japan and Korea have taken to manage the challenges of an aging population; and the concept of age itself, and how factors such as economic conditions, lack of healthcare or being a refugee from a war-torn country can have on your life expectancy.</p><p>"The life-course research concept has several principles, among them that you need to follow a person through their life to get a solid picture of how they are affected by a variety of influences," says McDaniel. "We are following individuals across time because at each point in your life course, you exist in a context within a society. For example, if a person graduates from high school or university at a time when the economy is not healthy, they might have trouble finding a job. A whole group of people may be disadvantaged over a long period because of that one moment in time."</p><p>By comparison, McDaniel says that a person who benefits from a strong economy may land a better job, have better educational opportunities and also have a longer life expectancy.</p><p>"We are expanding on research where we looked at Americans aged 45-64 over a 14-year period and a similar group of Canadians over a 16-year period, and found that income inequalities make a huge difference for their prospects in later years, " says McDaniel.</p><p>McDaniel is also examining how government policy has changed the way people live in countries where aging and significant population change is normal, such as in Japan and Korea, two countries with very different challenges.</p><p>"Japan is the 'oldest' country in the world, while Korea has a relatively young population but it will age very quickly," says McDaniel. "What we are finding is that innovations are unexpected. Both Korea and Japan have instituted publicly funded long-term care insurance. When speaking to the Koreans about why they implemented it at this time, the response was that they could afford it now while the population is young, as opposed to being unable to afford it later."</p><p>McDaniel said that what Japan did to respond to its aging population was to encourage more women to enter the workforce, and made it easier by instituting public daycare.</p><p>The other issue McDaniel looks to tackle as part of her research, is changing the fundamental notion of age from a number to a concept that takes a whole host of lifestyle experiences into consideration, among them health, education, economic circumstances and other factors.</p><p>"You need to look at age differently based on what happens to a person during their life. A person in a risky or blue-collar occupation might age differently than someone in a less dangerous or physically demanding job," she says. "We need to have a flexible definition of what is 'old', because this research, while not yet fully completed, is important in policy development."</p><p>Keeping a finger on the pulse of these worldwide indicators is keeping McDaniel and her teams constantly busy. The research projects will ultimately wind up as journal articles or become part of four books currently in process.</p><p><strong><em>This story first appeared in the November issue of the Legend. detonated at Suffield, Alta., likely inspired fear and dread in the average person.</p> <p>Dr. Douglas Schmitt (BSc '80), however, professor of geophysics and physics at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta and the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge's 2008 Distinguished Alumnus of the year award winner, is anything but average.</p> <p>For Schmitt, who was five years old at the time, the explosions proved very intriguing. "My mom told me it was the scientists who blew things up; so from then on I wanted to be a scientist," explains Schmitt.</p> <p>That love of science would continue and after graduating from Erle Rivers High School (Milk River), Schmitt entered the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge where he earned a bachelor of science in physics in 1980.</p> <p>"The U of L was a really good place for me to go to school at that time in my life," remembers Schmitt. "I was in the physics program which was really small at the time. The professors were great. They were accessible, not condescending; we had no fear of talking to them. They treated us like colleagues and gave us the background to keep learning."</p> <p>Schmitt lived in residence during his four years at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ and developed many lasting friendships and fond memories. He was active in the Residence Students' Association and served as both a floor rep and treasurer.</p> <p>"We ran the pop machines, washers and dryers. We had a lot of fun activities. I worked with a good group of people," says Schmitt. In his last year at the U of L, Schmitt was undecided about what to do with the rest of his life. Fortune then smiled upon him.</p> <p>"I was walking down Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Hall when I ran into one of the former lab instructors, Dave Hemmings. He asked if I wanted a job and I said, "Sure." I interviewed and got a job at Texaco in geophysics," explains Schmitt. "Before I got the job, I didn't know anything about geophysics so, in a sense, a chance encounter at the U of L set the course of my life and I am glad it happened."</p> <p>Schmitt returned to graduate school at the California Institute of Technology and earned a PhD in geophysics in 1987. Following his post-doctoral research at Stanford Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in California, he began his current career at the Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta in 1989. He is a popular professor who inspires students to always continue learning.</p> <p>"I think the best way to teach students is to give them the tools and skills to keep growing and learning, to teach them not to be afraid to get their hands dirty and to keep their minds open," says Schmitt.</p> <p>An interactive professor, each year Schmitt takes his fourth year geophysics students to Doug's Geophysics Field School (near his family farm east of Milk River), giving them the opportunity to perform a variety of geophysical experiments and gather data they will work with for the rest of the semester.</p> <p>As a Tier I Canada Research Chair, Schmitt also leads a team of highly skilled field and laboratory researchers. Their world-renowned research yields valuable information with important implications for better management of hydrocarbon production in the oil industry, the search for new mineral and water resources, the safe geological sequestration of greenhouse gases and the safety of mine workers worldwide.</p> <p>It all fits into his philosophy of continued learning and growth as he continues to work on numerous projects, including a major venture he is currently spearheading that involves scientific drilling into the deep permafrost of Canada's Arctic regions.</p> <p>Those explosions in the 1960's? They were in large part geophysics experiments, as Schmitt found out only after he was a professor at the U of A.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field-group-format group_related_topics field-group-div group-related-topics block-title-body speed-fast effect-none"><h2><span>Related Topics</span></h2><div class="field field-name-opencalais-company-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Company:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/company/texaco" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Texaco</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/company/tier-i-canada" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Tier I Canada</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-facility-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Facility:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/university-alberta" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/california-institute-technology" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">California Institute of Technology</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/facility/university-hall" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ Hall</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/facility/stanford-university" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Stanford Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-industryterm-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">IndustryTerm:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/industry-term/oil-industry" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">oil industry</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-naturalfeature-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">NaturalFeature:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/natural-feature/milk-river" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Milk River</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-opencalais-organization-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Organization:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/california-institute-technology" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">California Institute of Technology</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/dougs-geophysics-field-school" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Doug&#039;s Geophysics Field School</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/stanford-university-california" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Stanford Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ in California</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/university-lethbridge" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Lethbridge</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/university-alberta" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Ãâ·Ñ¸£Àû×ÊÔ´ÔÚÏß¿´Æ¬ of Alberta</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/unews/organization/erle-rivers-high-school" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Erle Rivers High School</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/unews/organization/residence-students-association" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Residence Students&#039;
