Fun Run/Walk taking registrations

Everybody may now know who President Mike Mahon is, but the Get to Know U Fun Run/Walk isn't just about meeting the new man on campus. Instead, it's an opportunity for everyone to gather in a recreational setting, all the while raising funds to support KidSport Alberta.

The first incarnation of the fun run/walk was truly an opportunity to introduce the new president to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community but it has grown into so much more over the ensuing two years. Scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22, 11 a.m. at the 1st Choice Savings Centre, the fun run/walk is an opportunity to mix and mingle with the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community, explore campus and bring as many people to the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as possible.

This year, a new 3km course has been added to the original 5km course. It is also stroller friendly, opening the event up to the entire family.

Registration fees for the event are $15 per person with children six and under registering for free. School group rates are also available.

Day-use change rooms to close in Wellness Centre

The 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness continues to be the site of a flurry of construction.

Renovations to the Wellness Centre and the core of the PE Building - that hasn't been touched in 40 years - aim to create a more cohesive environment between the two facilities.

Construction on the day-use change rooms on the aquatic centre side of the building begin Monday, July 30, meaning those change rooms will be closed until renovations are complete at the end of September.

The public will be able to access the Max Bell Aquatic Centre through the main members' change room and the family change room. There are plenty of day-use lockers available in the family change room.

In addition to the mechanical, electrical and infrastructure upgrades inside the walls, the change rooms will receive a complete overhaul with new wall and floor tiles and new bathroom fixtures including mirrors and vanities. The showers will also be reconfigured and updated to match the look of the Wellness Centre shower areas.

Fun Run supports KidSport Alberta

President Mike Mahon and his wife Maureen will be leading the way for the second annual Getting to Know U Fun Run/Walk.

"We wanted it to be a local charity and something that fits with the theme of physical fitness and promoting an active community," says Dr. Jennifer Copeland, Chair of the run organizing committee. "We also want to continue to foster that community relationship the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ has established with Lethbridge and southern Alberta."

The inaugural event drew participants from both the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ as well as the community as a whole. Copeland says the course is designed to give runners a look at the entire ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ campus, possibly showing people areas they've never seen before.

"People often come to campus for a very specific reason, and they rarely ever wander around. We designed the course to take in parts of campus that they might not usually get to, like the Breezeway and around Aperture Lake and so on," she says. "We also wanted to feature our new buildings such as the Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building, Markin Hall and the new addition to the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience, so it gives people the opportunity to see what's new on campus."

Registration for the event is $15 per person and can be done by contacting Sport and Recreation Services (403-329-2706, www.uleth.ca/sportrec).

Copeland says to keep in mind that the event is a fun run/walk and is open to everyone.

"Lots of people walked the course last year and had a great time with it," she says, adding there were a number of strollers being pushed around the course. "It's not a super-competitive event. We will have a clock this year so that people can chart their times but we're not issuing any official times. It's whatever you want to make of it."

Live music will be featured at the finish line, along with refreshments and, if last year was any indication, a number of excellent draw prizes. As well, the first 75 registrants will receive a special Fun Run hat.

"It's a lot of fun, a great way to really see the campus and a reason to get out and be active for a good cause."

Fun Run to benefit local KidSport

The Get to Know You Fun Run gains status as an annual event this fall when the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community gathers Saturday, Sept. 24 to challenge the scenic 5K campus course.

The run debuted as an installation event for President Mike Mahon and his wife Maureen last year and proved to be very popular, with more than 80 people taking part. It prompted organizers to look at the run as an annual opportunity to gather the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community for an activity that promotes health and wellness, all the while lending support to a local charitable organization. This year, all proceeds raised will go to support the local chapter of KidSport, an organization that provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sports.

Fine Arts summer camps available

Instead of spending the summer wishing you had something fun and exciting for your children to do, why not give them the opportunity to create a sculpture, paint a picture, make up a play, or act on stage? The U of L Faculty of Fine Arts Drama and Art Camps are the perfect outlet for their summer fun. There are seven weeklong camps to choose from, which run weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Use your body, voice and imagination to create a world of original characters and stories in this action-packed camp. Participants must be able to read. The camp concludes with a performance on Friday afternoon for parents and friends.

Artist's Studio
for ages 11 to 15

Specifically designed for students interested in investigating a variety of art experiences including painting, sculpture, printmaking and more. Aug 8-12 and Aug. 15-19

The registration fee for each camp includes all materials and supplies, a unique camp T-shirt and lunch each day.

*Camps from Aug. 3-6 are 4-day camps (Tuesday through Friday). All the rest of the camps are Monday through Friday.

The majority of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge campus will close its doors for the holiday season beginning 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 24. The campus will essentially be closed from this date through to 5 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 4. However, those hoping to visit the U of L's athletic facilities will still have the opportunity to do so throughout the holiday season.

1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness

The 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness, the Fitness Centre, the Ascent Climbing Centre and the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre are all open over the holidays - except for Christmas Day (Saturday, Dec. 25) and New Year's Day (Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011).

To walk, swim or run off your turkey, ham and holiday snacks, visit the following fitness facility websites to learn more about their holiday operating hours: Max Bell Pool Schedule; Ascent Climbing Centre Schedule; Fitness Centre Schedule.

Campus Security / Building Access

Most building entrances will be locked throughout the holiday season, except those at major campus entry points. Security staff are on duty at all times and can be reached by calling 403-329-2345.

There will be minimal public access to most buildings on campus from Saturday, Dec. 25 until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

The following entrances are open 24 hours:

- ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall, North entrance, Level 6
- ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Library, main entrance by the Aperture Drive Bus Loop
- 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness (north and south entrances)
- Turcotte Hall, west section (sliding doors)

The following entrances are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Hall, Level 4 entrance
- ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ Centre for the Arts, Level 4 entrance

The following buildings are closed to the public until 5 a.m. on Jan. 4:
- Students' Union Building
- Turcotte Hall (east section)
- Anderson Hall
- Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience
- Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building
- Markin Hall
- Park Way Service Complex

Security personnel are on duty 24 hours a day. If you have questions or concerns, call the emergency number at 403-329-2345. Those on campus can dial ext. 2345.

Horns men's basketball to host coaching clinic

��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge Pronghorns men's basketball is hosting its Southern Alberta Coaching Clinic Saturday, Oct. 2 at the 1st Choice Savings Centre gymnasium.

The clinic sees the return of former Pronghorns head coach Dave Crook as one of the keynote presenters. He'll join current head coach Dave Adams, along with assistant coach Brad Karren. All three coaches have won national coaching honours.

Registration for the clinic is $90 per participant, which includes an Adidas Horns t-shirt (first 50 registered people) and a ticket to the Alumni game that night. Receipts will be issued to educators for PD reimbursement.

9 a.m. – Opening remarks. Session #1: Individual workouts for your players (Dave Adams)

Noon – Lunch
1 p.m. – Session #4: Zone Attack (Dave Crook)
2 p.m. – Session #5: Zone Defenses in the Full-court and Half-court (Brad Karren)

Alumni Game

The Horns will hold their annual Alumni Game later that evening, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Crook will coach the Alumni squad (Bob White, Remington Stemler, Rob Cooper, Mike Myers, and Tim Rollingson Jr. have confirmed their participation) as it battles the 2010-11 edition of the Horns.

After the Alumni Game, a short Meet the Players event will be held in PE 264, followed by the first Friends of Horns Men's Basketball AGM.

It's all about U!

With the start of another new academic year, it is a great time to take stock of your own health and wellness. Over the next few months, there are many opportunities and resources available on campus to help you assess your well-being.

Get Fit at Work Stretching and Strengthening

Do you find your back is sore after sitting at your desk for long periods of time? Maybe you have sore knees or shoulders because you are constantly reaching, squatting or lifting in your job. Or maybe you are like me and feel stiff and sore just getting out of bed in the mornings.

Kinesiology student, Jeanine Baxter, will be leading group sessions for our brand new stretching program. It involves exercises that can be done while you are at work.

Bring your lunch, but be ready to try out some of these simple but effective stretches.

Take Charge of Your Heart

Find out your general health status, or if you are at risk for heart or other related diseases by taking part in the Vascular Risk Screening program.

There are still limited spots available in this very popular program. New this fall, vascular risk screening participants will have the opportunity to attend three Eating for Heart Health education sessions. They will also receive a free one-on-one lifestyle session with a fitness consultant.

Time to register for Fun Run/Walk

The ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ community is invited to join our new president, Dr. Mike Mahon, and his family for the Get to Know U 5K Fun Run/Walk, Saturday, Sept. 25.

The event is one of a number of introductory activities that Mahon will be taking part in this fall as he begins his tenure as the new ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ of Lethbridge president.

The 5K course winds its way through campus, giving runners and walkers a view of many of the ��Ѹ��Դ��߿�Ƭ's new facilities.

Registration for the event is limited to the first 200 participants and is priced at $15, which includes a water bottle, opportunity to win door prizes and post-race refreshments. All money raised from the run will help support KidSport Alberta, a charity long supported by Mahon and his family.

The run begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25 with pre-event package pick-up on Friday, Sept. 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. and the morning of the race, from 8 to 9:30 a.m., at the U of L ticket centre.
